If anyone is having an issue with your PS4 not recognizing the USB Flash Drive (even though you changed the format to FAT32 and ExFAT, put the file in PS4>UPDATE>PS4UPDATE.PUP)... I had this issue. I figured out I downloaded the wrong file. The firmware file should be about 800-900 MB. If you downloaded the 200-300 MB file, that's the wrong. Just an FYI.
I would try a different USB flash drive and make sure you format it to FAT32 or ExFAT before placing the file on the drive. Also, are you placing the file in the correct folder directory? Make a folder named "PS4", then within that, make another folder named UPDATE. Then place the actual file in that folder. What is the size of the update file. Are you sure you downloaded the correct file?
This whole process can be done with ONE HARD DRIVE (Seagate Backup Plus Slim)! And a PC that has an efficient amount of storage space! (dependant on backup size and PC HDD) . 1st. Backup the PS4 to the "Seagate backup plus" using the USB cable BEFORE taking the USB apart. 2nd. Copy the necessary files and folders from the external HDD to your PC/laptop! 3rd. Now disassemble the 'portable HDD & swap the PS4's 500G HDD into the Seagate Backup Plus Slim HD casing (HDD Enclosure) and put the 2TB into the PS4 (as shown in the video). 4th. Format the PS4 with the 2TB HDD (as shown in the video). 5th. Format the 500G HDD that's now in the enclosure and place the folders and files back onto it. 6th. Plug the 500G into your PS4 with the USB cable, and RESTORE YOUR DATA. 7th. You've done it!!! Backup & Restore using 1 portable HDD!!! All done with ONE EXTERNAL HDD CASING!!!
RE: Tutorial ... Thanks for taking it slow and not rushing like many others have. Everything is well lit, with no noise nor distractions, and calmly presented with no unrelated rants or opinions. Good Job! RE: Screwdriver used to pry off cover: I used my nails, very carefully and waited for the applied pressure to work up the cover slowly tear itself loose for a few seconds. It only took about 20-30 seconds thankfully. A screwdriver? Obviously it causes far to much cosmetic damage in every video on RUclips. You could try using a flexible and thin guitar pick. RE: Adhesive strip inside cover: I tried to get rid of the adhesive strips inside the cover of the Seagate Ext HDD. Duct tape does not work to remove it; it just tear the duct tape and sticks it to the adhesive tape in the cover leaving behind more crud. Thank for the vid and tutorial, still working our the update download as my USB does not show up on my 8.1 Dell i5
demoh2o Dude, everything went just perfectly with your tutorial, super!!! Now i am trying to back up some games on an external HDD 2TB(is formatted to fat32) and the PS4 keep telling me : "there is not enough space on the usb storage". It is impossible because surely there is a space,do you have an idea what causes this message? Thank you very much again,my friend.
+flotech66 if you still havent upgraded. fat32 supports max to 3.99gb files and exfat supports 4gb+ when i backedup my hdd the files were 3.99 but i used exfat :) try it as well and you should be fine(downside: you need to format it to change it to exfat as the cmd convert is not working...)
+flotech66 hmm no idea honestly. but given the fact in powers an usb that shouldnt be true. is the hdd blank? what i did when i did my backup was to connect it to a pc. format it in exfat and then connect it to the ps4. but i indeed used 3.5 inch hdd. btw my 2.5 extarnal hdd has a double usb cable for more power input. if yours also has such cable try with it
So I'm finally upgrading my PS4 tonight and this is the most comprehensive video I've found on youtube with ONE small exception. Before you can back up your ps4 you have to format your external hdd to exFAT or FAT32, my hdd only had the option of exFAT and it works great now.
Hey man, I just tried to install my new 2TB hard drive in the ps4, and I keep getting Error code CE-34788-0 I downloaded the larger download file, and even formatted the USB drive to the FAT32, but how do i format the 2TB drive to a FAT32? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Im getting the same error, as far as I know you don't have to format the new 2TB hdd the ps4 does that for you, I am going to try formatting my thumb drive to exFAT, since it isnt working as it.
Hey I got it to work. Try this. Format your thumb drive to exFAT make really, really really, sure you spell your folder names right and all in UPPERCASE. Also after you copy the PS4UPDATE.PUP in the UPDATE folder, rename it just in case, just re-type PS4UPDATE.PUP. This fixed the error code for me, think it will work for you too.
so the file that I save into the update folder on the flash drive I need to rename it PS4UPDATE.PUP ? which download are you using? the 300mb or the 850 mb? I can't for the life of me get mine to work.
The big one, the link that says "do you want to preform a fresh install of the full system software. Are you booting up you PS4 in safe mode? Hopefully you didn't format the new hdd you put in your ps4 (however I don't think it will matter) The ps4 formats it automatically. I would say re-format your thumb drive to exFAT. make a new folder, rename it PS4 (all caps no spaces), then inside that folder make another folder and rename it UPDATE (all caps no spaces) then, Down load the full system software to your computer, then COPY it to you newly exFAT formatted thumb drive inside the UPDATE folder, the file is already named PS4UPDATE.PUP however just to be safe I re-named it. I simply re-typed in PS4UPDATE.PUP just to make sure everthing is right.
Fantastic video homeboy. I bought a 2 TB upgrade kit on Amazon for $119. Your video was right on point. Better spending $119 then buying a whole new PS4. Thanks bro.
+demoh2o change the firmware link in the discription :) the one you point is for regular update. the one needed for system reinstall is only available in the page explaining how to install it(the one you show and the small link you select in the video) update is 350 full system is around 750mb
Thank you for making this video. I'm waiting for my Seagate to come in then I'll be changing mine and using this video. Best video I've seen on how to do this :)
Just changed to my new 2TB hdd. so this video is great. covers pretty much everything. I just wanted to add a few notes to clarify some points. 1) you need to make sure you go to settings->system->Back Up PS4 and save your "captures, saved data, and settings" because this holds your user account. Applications are your games installed onto your playstation 4, choosing back those up is up to you. 2) Backing up your game saved data can be done by uploading it to the cloud if and only if you have PS+, again, it is up to you if you want to upload you game saved data via cloud, or USB. Game saved data and saved data are two different things. Game saved data can be found by going into "Application saved data management" 3) the USB from my understanding needs to be formatted into exFAT, in order to do this, plug it in to a pc, open my computer, find the usb, right click, select format, and where it says FAT32, change it to exFAT, and hit apply. it should take a min, and it will say the USB was successfully formatted. 4) On the playstation website the guy has us go to for the Software update, make sure you download the file under the title "Perform a New Installation of the System Software" this file should be around 800MB. This was where my error was, I mistakenly Downloaded the 200MB version of the download, and it was the wrong one. Check the file size to make sure it is the bigger size. then proceed to the rest of the steps in the video. I have successfully done it, and have all of my saves, themes, etc. and have 1.76 TB (before i install my games XD ) 5) just reminder, once you have successfully gotten into the screen where you appear as User1, restore your ps4, your backed up data should be on the USB. once this happens, you'll have everything you chose to save earlier. make sure you remember to install your games if you chose not to back those up on a USB/External HDD. I chose not too, and had to install them manually, then download my game saved data from the cloud. Everything checks out!, I'm super excited, and ready to play. Hope my tips and reminders work for you guys. oh, another side note, I bought the TLOU PS4 version, which came with a digital copy of TLOU remastered. i was worried that it would be erased and gone forever because i did not have a hard copy. This was NOT the case. I was able to re download it from my library. Just incase any of you had similar concerns. ;)
+Jules Lazard yes you have to format it to ExFAT or FAT32. on mac you can do this via the disk utility and on pc you open windows explorer and right click on the usb drive and click format. the same has to be done with the USB you use to put the latest ps4 update file in
+Cameron Goldthorpe I actually got it. I had the file labeled as PS4UPDATE.PUP.PUP I needed to remove one of the pup and it worked fine. I did it on my girls playstation also. thanks
you are the man!!! i just got my 2tb seagate in and was a little nervous about installing, mainly the back up and software downloads.. but after watching this im ready to tackle this thing!! =)
+scyther6666 The time to complete tends to keep going down quickly as it does in this video. The data transfer of most slim drives have a transfer rate of 200-400mb per second.
This was a good walkthrough. I upgraded my drive with no major issues. The backup and restore process took the majority of the time. Thanks for your effort in making this video.
Just for anyone who has something like PT that they don't want to lose: Just delete any large install files for games that you don't think you'll be playing in the near future. I deleted all of my major installs and kept some of my PS+ games and PT when transferring. It saves you a lot of time if you don't mind re-installing your old games later. It just gives you a little more flexibility. Hope this helps, and thanks for the video!
HOW TO BACKUP AND RESTORE YOUR PS4 WITHOUT NEEDING TO BUY A 2ND EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!!! The precise process for using ONLY the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB HDD and the 500 GB HDD located within the PS4, is as such: 1. Format your Seagate Backup Plus Slim (SBPS) HDD into an exFAT file type. -Connect the SBPS to your PC. -Find the SBPS HDD in the "Computer" folder, 'Right Click' on it and choose "Format". -Under "File System", choose "exFAT" because the PS4 does not recognize the NTFS file system, and FAT32 is for thumb drives/flash drives and smaller files. -Quick Format is okay. -Click Start. 2. Backup your PS4 to the Seagate Backup Plus Slim HDD using a USB Cable. -Follow the procedure for backing up your PS4 data, as shown in the above video. 3. Copy (Don't Cut) Your Data from the SBPS to PC using the USB Cable. -Once the PS4 has completed backing up the data to the SBPS. Disconnect the SBPS from the PS4 and reconnect it to your PC. -Find the folder on your SBPS labeled "PS4" and "Copy" it to your PC (don't cut in case the transfer gets interrupted). -Once the transfer is complete, delete the data off of the SBPS. ::You can now install the SBPS into your PS4 as shown above and place the 500GB from the PS4 into the SBPS casing.:: 4. Format the 500 GB HDD that's in the SBPS casing in to exFAT file type. -Follow steps in step 1. ::If the drive doesn't show up on your PC, right-click "Computer" and select "Disk Management" (or search for "Disk Management" from the start menu) and format it into exFAT from there. Choose the largest partition size possible. Or the "original allocation size" if available:: 5. Copy "PS4" folder from PC to the 500 GB HDD. -Just copy it there... 6. Create a "New Folder" inside of the "PS4" Folder titled "UPDATE". -Open the "PS4" Folder on the 500 GB HDD and you should see a folder titled "EXPORT". -"Right Click" within the white space of the "PS4" Folder and create a second folder, and name it "UPDATE" (There should now be two folders next to each other within the PS4 folder). 7. Download System Software Update from: "playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/" -From the PlayStation.com website under "Support" select "System Updates". -Near the bottom of the page, you'll see "Perform a New Installation of the System Software" -Below that, you'll see a slim black bar titled "DOWNLOAD NOW >>". That's the version of the System Software Update you'll need. -Download it. -Copy the System Software Update File "PS4UPDATE.PUP" into the "UPDATE" folder you created on the 500 GB HDD that's connected to your computer via USB. ::The PS4 folder should now have a folder titled "EXPORT" and a folder titled "UPDATE":: ::Within the "EXPORT" folder should be a folder titled "BACKUP" that contains a folder labeled by the year, month, day, and time that the backup was created, which contains your backup data.:: ::Within the "UPDATE" folder should be a file titled PS4UPDATE.PUP".:: ::ALL FOLDERS AND FILES MUST BE IN ALL CAPS:: 8. RESTORE your PS4. -RESTORE PS4 as shown in the above video. 9. Install SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATE. -The System Software Update is on the same HDD as the backup. So just install it as shown in the above video. 10. Restore Licenses - Select (Settings) > [PlayStation™ Network/Account Management] > [Restore Licenses] 11. You Have Finished. -That is all. You're done. There's nothing else to do. 12. Go Play Video Games. -Why are you still reading this??? Go play some games!!!!
This is a perfect video, only thing is that you should do is to change the link for the update as the link you have takes you to the 300meg one and not the 870meg one for the new installation. Apart from that, great job! The link for the 800 meg on is at the bottom of the page that the link on this video takes you to and select new installation. hope that helps anyone.
Thanks so much for the video. Everything was just like you said. I bought the drive and drive casing separate though, I didn't have to tear up a Seagate. The first video I saw was backing up each game one at a time. Backing up the whole thing saved a lot of time, and saved PT. And if you go into Backup and your trophies aren't synced it will tell you, cause I forgot and it told me. You might want to add this to your description, it answers a lot of the questions below. "You need the Seagate that you will be tearing up, you need an external hard drive at least 500 gig formatted as exFAT to back up on, to do it this way. (You will need a computer to format the 500 gig backup drive as exFAT.) Technically you don't need the flash drive, the update file can be put on the hard drive with the backup. Use the right USB port for drives, left USB for reconnecting the controller. When your done you'll have the back up drive, and the hard drive that was in the PS4 which you might be able to put in the Seagate case and format and use as another external drive."
Sub-Zero Racing Team - (SZRT) I thought I had to put my saved data onto my USB stick. So I did that and put the update on, but they all got deleted. I didnt realise you needed 2 hard drives
+Sarah Brodie I describe how to do this below, using ONLY THE SEAGATE BLACK PLUS SLIM EXTERNAL 2TB HDD and a PC/LAPTOP with sufficient HDD space below to hold the PS4 storage data.
+Sub-Zero Racing Team - (SZRT) So if I have a separate external hard drive, can I back up my data on that hard drive, install the new hard drive in the PS4 and set it up, and use the backup data from my external hard drive? Will that work?
4-2016: Successful completion of upgrade!!! Thanks to this video. It was quicker than expected. 3 hour upload and download. One day, boom, 2TB. Word of advice...follow each step precisely. Precisely. I will update this comment if I have any issues.
Just wanted to thank you for doing such a thorough job on this tutorial. Made this HDD swap a breeze, and also reminded me to do it correctly as not to delete my copy of P.T. as well. Cheers!
Good thorough tutorial, nothing missed out. Have seen a couple which literally tell you how to swap over the drive with no info on backup, restoring etc. Thanks.
Very easy to follow, I highly suggest this video. I update with a used usb with other files on it. The firmware update was about 850mb. Just label as noted in the video with "PS4" and "UPDATE" on the flash drive.
Just wanted to leave a massive thank you for helping me with this. There were a lot of things I was still confused on, and you definitely clarified them for me :D.
You don't need 2 drives (external and thumb) to store/backup and a seperate thumbdrive to get the software from PSN to use for the the installation software as many are saying you need.. I just used my 1TB to backup my data after deleting all my apps on my PS4, (except PT), then I downloaded the installation/update software on the same External HD. The backups will create the same folder (PS4) and the backup file will also be on the (PS4) folder thats named (EXPORT) then inside it is the (BACKUPS) folder.. Just make another folder named (UPDATE) inside the (PS4) folder to put the installation/update software.. So after all the swapping of HD was done, when I plugged in my External to Initilize/Install, I didn't even have to unplug the External and soon as installation and set up was completed, went straight to Restore.. worked flawlessly.. Only hold up for me is that I didn't want to wait 4hours to download 300Gb of (application) data, so I deleted everything and only left PT. So I was left with about 6Gb to back up and got done in about 5mins. But then, you'd have to download each one of your gahmes (digital & disc) all over again, which is fine, because the digital download can go even while on rest mode.. soon as that's in, you can start playing that while downloading the disc games..
I have watched like 4 of these videos and yours was the best i have seen to do this and gave me the confidence to try it myself. A few things i would have like to have known in your video are #1 the format of the hard drive to back up the files, (I noticed in the comments below later) and #2 the fact that you HAVE to click the download now section on the playstation website under "Performing a new installation" i thought the link at the top of the page and that link are the same but they are not. One link is 865MB and the other is like 280MB.
Hey man, I know I'm late but awesome tutorial. Got a PS4 for Christmas with about 12 games so I had to change it. Followed this step by step and it worked perfectly. Thanks again man, and you earner yourself a new subscriber
I am currently backing up right now, make sure the external drive is formatted to exfat otherwise the ps4 wont recognize it! Its a great tutorial so far, I'll keep you posted!
There is another informative video on how to upgrade to a 2TB drive but he doesn't show you the backup/restore method. Glad I watched this video so I didn't have re-download all my games and lose P.T. Had three different user accounts which transferred via the restore as well. Thanks!
First of all, awesome tutorial. I watched a bunch of similar instruction videos, but this one really provided the clearest step by step process. Thanks a ton! Secondly, I'm not sure if anyone asked about it already or came across this situation, but my external HDD is a few years old and is not compatible with my PS4. I panicked at first, but thankfully my flash drive was 32GB, and it allowed me to use the same one for both the Firmware update and the application data. I simply had to delete my application data from the PS4 (saving P.T. of course) down to under about 26GB. My point is, you don't need to have an external hard drive AND a flash drive. It's safe to use the same HDD or flash drive for BOTH the firmware and whatever you're transferring from your PS4; the console manages to partition the data just fine without any additional steps.
Finding the right type of screwdriver was a little bit frustrating, but I successfully upgraded my PS4 hard rive to 2tb. As for performance differences, downloading games are a lot quicker. Thanks
This helped me out a lot! Thanks. I've also discovered if the USB stick does not work with the PlayStation you can use the hard drive where you backed up your application. You'll already find a "PS4" file and under that file create "UPDATE" and put your update file there and it should work fine. I've just done it and everything works well. So there was no need for that USB stick.
Colton Hachey what are you using the external hard drive or the USB stick? If it's he USB stick there is no need for it. Once you backed up your PS4 data in the hard drive connect it to the computer and download the PS4 update file. You'll already find a "PS4" folder in the Hardrive. Just create a folder called "UPDATE" within that folder and drag the update file you downloaded within that folder. It should work just fine as if you were using USB stick. Probably even faster.
YOU ARE THE MAN/WOMAN! I was having issues with the USB thumb drive not being read so I moved the PUP file to the external hard drive and it's updating now! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video, really helped. Very thorough. My only snag was I wanted to use my existing external hard drive for the back up and it was in the wrong format. I had to back that up onto my laptop and then reformat into FAT32 format.
this was an amazing video thank you. if you get stuck with the update file make sure it's the 800mb file and if it don't work the first try installing it again it worked for me the 3rd try
Thanks for the great step-by-step guide. Had some trouble installing the new update but I managed to get it done. I'm just disappointed I couldn't use anything else other than 2TBs. At least right now.
Thanks alot man i just upgraded mine using the steps in your video.. my ps4s hard drive sleeve looked a little different though. i definitely will recommend this vid to anyone else wanting to upgrade
I did everything step by step. Everything worked. But few minutes later my ps4 started freezing. I had to put the original hard drive back in and no more freezing. And i used the exact same external hard drive you used (wasted $90 because after opening the casing I couldnt return it) I then purchased 2TB internal hard drive and it works.
The best tutorial ever!!! anyone can do it! just follow his instructions and you wouldn't get or encounter a problem... Thank you for this helpful video boss!! you are the best!!
This is a great video. The only thing I got stuck on (which I think is a common problem) is with uploading the system software and firmware once the new drive is installed. You need to make sure the file you try and download from the Sony site is around 900mg and NOT a smaller file. The smaller file doesn't contain all the info you need for the install!
Great guide. Includes plenty of helpful details at a pace that allows you to keep up with each step. Only problem I encountered was when downloading the firmware update. Make sure download the file under "Perform a New Installation of the System Software". I made the mistake of downloading the smaller file above it under update with a computer. Silly mistake.
Thanks for the helpful tutorial! I've been needing to add more memory to my ps4 and you made it as easy as possible for me, got it done with no issues :)
Thnx for the clear video. Just replaced my 500gb HDD for a 1000gb SSHD (SSD/HDD hybrid). The only problem was 1 of the 4 black screws didn't want to come out, had to use pliers to get is loose, but other than that, a smooth replacement and reinstall.
BROTIP!! When you are backing up to the USB, uninstall all your shit except for P.T so that it doesn't take 50 years to back up, then just re-download or throw the disks in once the new hard drive is in. btw good video bro this is always my go to video for when I need to remember how to do this.
Thanks Demoh2o! This vid has helped me upgrade my hard drive & is easy to follow. I did however miss out on PT, I must have deleted it at some point, oops. Now I can enjoy my extensive library of games, well except for PT. Cheers.
I needed to update my PS4 size glad we can update the Harddrive and Sony was kind enough to give us an easy way to do it. PT was my main concern since we can't download it anymore.
Just done exactly the same to mine, all working beautifully, this tutorial helped a lot as its not normally the sort of thing i'd undertake, but glad i did now!! ta!
Don't sweat it if the form factor of your HDD is too big for the slot. You can use wire cutters and remove the shielding around the HDD bay. The HDD is self shielded so there's no problem. I installed a WD Green 2TB in mine this way and it works fine. Of course, a full size HDD won't let you put the cover back on. This is just for the HDD's that are a tiny bit larger than the laptop 2.5 form factor.
You saved my life thnx mine filled up pretty quickly and have to delete games now I will never need to :) tip: buy another the same sea gate but 1Tb and download the sea gate software so you can format to fat32 easily and back up everything
Best tutorial I have found, this guy provided a clear and easy to follow step by step guide which has proven to have got my own PS4 upgraded without any problems....Demoh2o my good man thank you for the help!
My suggestion to everyone wanting more space on their ps4 and buying a TB HardDrive to do so is to do all of it before actually playing any games on your system because by doing that you're saving plenty of time and you don't have to worry about backing anything up because there's nothing to back up. Now if you don't have that much saved stuff then you're fine but if you have a lot of things on your ps4 or like the person in the video who has games they don't want to redo such at P.T. then unfortunately yo'll need a TB External or a USB Flash Drive with a lot of GB like a 64 GB most likely in order to back up your things. Hope this helps!
Thanks much, excellent walkthrough. The only problem I had was trying to use a 4tb drive to backup and first I had to (1) partition into 2 2-tb sections then (2) make them fat32 so PS4 could use it.
you really did helped me a lot in back and restore, i was too afraid of changing the HDD and everything but i did every steps you did, and it worked fine with me, thu im still restoring my data hahahaha it will take 4 hours, im little bit more than you hahaha, but really really thank you man for the video that helped a lot, enjoy and good luck with your life
thnx for this video realley helped alot... ran into one problem my file kept getting corrupt so i had to download and install it to my usb a few times after that it worked like a charm....
Having a small problem. For some reason, the files on my backup hdd are in this order: PS4 > PS4 > EXPORT > BACKUP > ... How do I change it to have PS4 only once, without having to copy everything? The PS$ isn't recognizing it because of this.
Amazing video! I do have a question though.....I'm assuming where all my games are digitally downloaded or gameshared, I would NEED to backup my application data as well...all 390gb of it...meaning....I would, in fact, need to have the 2 drives (2tb for the ps4 and 500gb to backup data to). Am I right in assuming this?
If anyone is having an issue with your PS4 not recognizing the USB Flash Drive (even though you changed the format to FAT32 and ExFAT, put the file in PS4>UPDATE>PS4UPDATE.PUP)... I had this issue. I figured out I downloaded the wrong file. The firmware file should be about 800-900 MB. If you downloaded the 200-300 MB file, that's the wrong. Just an FYI.
Damn just realized that thanks saved me a lot of time it all the way in the bottom ... Good man
Thank you so much I was so worried when it didn't work the first time
Thx I was getting so stressed!
David Nguyen I did all of that yet it tells me it cannot find the update file. don't know what to do now.
(dependant on backup size and PC HDD)
.
+Sub-Zero Racing Team - (SZRT) Thanks dude, I was worried I'd have to spend extra cash to get a new thumb drive or something!
+Sub-Zero Racing Team - (SZRT) I can't back up my PS4 to the seagate slim. It says its not supported.
+Lance Cryor plug your seagate to your computer. Then go to computer and right click on the seagate and click on format. Change the format to FAT32
Euael Ketema Will do. Thanks a lot :)
+Euael Ketema Yup!

This is the best tutorial i have seen so far and the only guide that gives me a confident to do this process...i will do it .. thanks!!
flotech66 Happy to help :)
demoh2o Dude, everything went just perfectly with your tutorial, super!!!
+flotech66 hmm no idea honestly. but given the fact in powers an usb that shouldnt be true. is the hdd blank? what i did when i did my backup was to connect it to a pc. format it in exfat and then connect it to the ps4. but i indeed used 3.5 inch hdd. btw my 2.5 extarnal hdd has a double usb cable for more power input. if yours also has such cable try with it
+flotech66 How did it turn out?!
So I'm finally upgrading my PS4 tonight and this is the most comprehensive video I've found on youtube with ONE small exception. Before you can back up your ps4 you have to format your external hdd to exFAT or FAT32, my hdd only had the option of exFAT and it works great now.
Hey man, I just tried to install my new 2TB hard drive in the ps4, and I keep getting Error code CE-34788-0
I downloaded the larger download file, and even formatted the USB drive to the FAT32, but how do i format the 2TB drive to a FAT32?
Best tutorial to backup, upgrade, and restore EVER! I followed each step carefully and now I have 2TB on my PS4! Thanks!
Thanks for making an easy task even easier. Great step by step guide.
cocktailzombie it's easy, but a bit scary...
Out of all the videos I've seen this is by far the most informative tutorial on a step by step to back up/restore and upgrade a ps4....
Thank you for making this video. I'm waiting for my Seagate to come in then I'll be changing mine and using this video. Best video I've seen on how to do this :)
I don't usually comment on videos, but this is seriously one the most helpful videos ever. Thank you so much, man. Keep up the great work.
+Derek Finney Thank you, I appreciate it
Thank you so much this is the best tutorial yet
Game saved data can be found by going into "Application saved data management"
3) the USB from my understanding needs to be formatted into exFAT, in order to do this, plug it in to a pc, open my computer, find the usb, right click, select format, and where it says FAT32, change it to exFAT, and hit apply. it should take a min, and it will say the USB was successfully formatted.
I have successfully done it, and have all of my saves, themes, etc. and have 1.76 TB (before i install my games XD )
5) just reminder, once you have successfully gotten into the screen where you appear as User1, restore your ps4, your backed up data should be on the USB. once this happens, you'll have everything you chose to save earlier. make sure you remember to install your games if you chose not to back those up on a USB/External HDD.
Just incase any of you had similar concerns. ;)
I followed your steps 100%. Thanks so much for posting this. I succeeded in upgrading the 500gb for a 2TB on my PS4. Keep up the tutorials!
+I AssessYou Happy to be of help! Thanks for watching! :)
+demoh2o my question is the external hard drive that you back up with. does it have to be empty. will you lose all the data on there is you use it?
+Jules Lazard yes you have to format it to ExFAT or FAT32. on mac you can do this via the disk utility and on pc you open windows explorer and right click on the usb drive and click format. the same has to be done with the USB you use to put the latest ps4 update file in
+Cameron Goldthorpe I actually got it. I had the file labeled as PS4UPDATE.PUP.PUP I needed to remove one of the pup and it worked fine. I did it on my girls playstation also. thanks
+Cameron Goldthorpe If you keep getting the "Cannot read file" message, change the format to exFAT.
you are the man!!! i just got my 2tb seagate in and was a little nervous about installing, mainly the back up and software downloads.. but after watching this im ready to tackle this thing!! =)
My motherfucking ps4 told me 49 fucking hours. Aint nobody got time for that.
+scyther6666 lmfao
+scyther6666 The time to complete tends to keep going down quickly as it does in this video. The data transfer of most slim drives have a transfer rate of 200-400mb per second.
This was a good walkthrough. I upgraded my drive with no major issues. The backup and restore process took the majority of the time. Thanks for your effort in making this video.
DO you need two USBs or just one for the backing up and for the system software update?
Rocky Deleon just two I guess
A 500g hard drive for the backup and a 2gb usb for the update
Just for anyone who has something like PT that they don't want to lose: Just delete any large install files for games that you don't think you'll be playing in the near future. I deleted all of my major installs and kept some of my PS+ games and PT when transferring. It saves you a lot of time if you don't mind re-installing your old games later. It just gives you a little more flexibility. Hope this helps, and thanks for the video!
Is it possible to just back it up on the hdd your putting into the ps4??
You are the Don, thank you so much for this upload, I followed it to the letter and my ps4 now has 1.77TB of storage.
HOW TO BACKUP AND RESTORE YOUR PS4 WITHOUT NEEDING TO BUY A 2ND EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!!!
The precise process for using ONLY the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB HDD and the 500 GB HDD located within the PS4, is as such:
::You can now install the SBPS into your PS4 as shown above and place the 500GB from the PS4 into the SBPS casing.::
Or the "original allocation size" if available::
7. Download System Software Update from: "playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/"
-From the PlayStation.com website under "Support" select "System Updates".
-Near the bottom of the page, you'll see "Perform a New Installation of the System Software"
-Below that, you'll see a slim black bar titled "DOWNLOAD NOW >>". That's the version of the System Software Update you'll need.
-Download it.
-Copy the System Software Update File "PS4UPDATE.PUP" into the "UPDATE" folder you created on the 500 GB HDD that's connected to your computer via USB.
::The PS4 folder should now have a folder titled "EXPORT" and a folder titled "UPDATE"::
::Within the "EXPORT" folder should be a folder titled "BACKUP" that contains a folder labeled by the year, month, day, and time that the backup was created, which contains your backup data.::
::Within the "UPDATE" folder should be a file titled PS4UPDATE.PUP".::
::ALL FOLDERS AND FILES MUST BE IN ALL CAPS::
8. RESTORE your PS4.
-RESTORE PS4 as shown in the above video.
9. Install SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATE.
-The System Software Update is on the same HDD as the backup. So just install it as shown in the above video.
10. Restore Licenses
- Select (Settings) > [PlayStation™ Network/Account Management] > [Restore Licenses]
11. You Have Finished.
-That is all. You're done. There's nothing else to do.
12. Go Play Video Games.
-Why are you still reading this??? Go play some games!!!!
Reposted for the convenience of those inquiring.
Nice work mate.
Life saver
on step 4 in the disk management how exactly do you format it into exFAT
This world needs more people like you
this video deserve ALL the praise for it's easy demonstration! GREAT VIDEO!
+KevinTheCyborg haha thank you, although im sure there are better tutorials out there without the shaky cam and a better voice :P
Thanks man! I just upgraded my PS4 from 500gb to 2TB. :)
Insane How much GB do you nees on your USB to do this? my USB is 8 gB is that enough
NietMetKankerSchelden need at least 24gb
Humberto Vargas no you don't need a 24GB USB stick... the PS4 update file is only 320meg...
NietMetKankerSchelden yes, plenty big enough
NietMetKankerSchelden and in this tutorial at 1:24 he says "it doesn't matter what USB you use, as long as its a GB or more"
Great video. Easy, simple and informative.
22+ people who "disliked" this video are XBone owners.
Dude you are freaking awesome!! great video...very well explained! i appreciate you took the time to help others...i did it in no time.
LarsJamesKirk did u lose any saved data
This is a perfect video, only thing is that you should do is to change the link for the update as the link you have takes you to the 300meg one and not the 870meg one for the new installation. Apart from that, great job! The link for the 800 meg on is at the bottom of the page that the link on this video takes you to and select new installation. hope that helps anyone.
What's PT ?
***** Oh... ok Thnx
Landan Dauphinais. With that said, for those who don't have this teaser what do we need to do?
+joe claridy Nothing. You can't get it anymore.
PreserveBigCats its a banned game
Not banned. Just cancelled. It was to be published by Konami & created by Hideo Kojima. But we all know how that went.
When your done you'll have the back up drive, and the hard drive that was in the PS4 which you might be able to put in the Seagate case and format and use as another external drive."
ugh I did it all wrong and I've lost everything
Do you mind sharing what you did wrong so others don't make the same mistake?
Sub-Zero Racing Team - (SZRT) I thought I had to put my saved data onto my USB stick. So I did that and put the update on, but they all got deleted. I didnt realise you needed 2 hard drives
+Sarah Brodie I describe how to do this below, using ONLY THE SEAGATE BLACK PLUS SLIM EXTERNAL 2TB HDD and a PC/LAPTOP with sufficient HDD space below to hold the PS4 storage data.
+Sarah Brodie Sorry to hear about that. I specifically said at the beginning of my video that two hard drives are needed.
It worked like a charm thanks to your video! It took just over 2 hours to backup and just over 2 hours to restore for me.
Thank you again mate!
Awesome and Congrats! Its better than having to wait 8 hours to back up and 4-5 hours to restore like I did lol
How do you format it to exfat?
Help I need to know
Right click ,format!
There is another informative video on how to upgrade to a 2TB drive but he doesn't show you the backup/restore method. Glad I watched this video so I didn't have re-download all my games and lose P.T. Had three different user accounts which transferred via the restore as well. Thanks!
Excellent job, Sir. I know this is easy but I was so scared of fucking this up with the firmware and you made it so easy.
Thank you!! best tutorial EVER!! btw guys for those who are wondering your profiles will all be in the back up so dnt worry just back it up!
I just finished installing my hard drive using your instructions and would like to say thanks so much. Everything went great.
this video was a great help i upgraded over a month ago only using this video and everything is running as it should.
Very helpful! I am gonna change the HDD too... I got the PS4 for 2 months and I already have only 66 GB free space out of 500 GB. Thank you buddy.
Thanks
Super easy install. Followed this tutorial step by step and had no troubles. Thanks for the video!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to show all the steps. I have seen others, but your video answers the questions that the other videos didn't.
Massive help this bro, have been putting it off for a while, my ps4 is just currently restoring (6gb/393gb) but pretty much complete. Thanks dude!!
It won't work at all. It says I need to connect a USB and it won't read it off the USB
+Hugh Mungus so take the new external out and put the file on it and then put it back in and download the software off of it?
+Hugh Mungus it still says it can't find the file
YOU ARE THE MAN/WOMAN! I was having issues with the USB thumb drive not being read so I moved the PUP file to the external hard drive and it's updating now! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dude you have the best tutorial on RUclips to do this upgrade!! All my confusion has been cleared that you!!!
Great video, really helped. Very thorough. My only snag was I wanted to use my existing external hard drive for the back up and it was in the wrong format. I had to back that up onto my laptop and then reformat into FAT32 format.
this was an amazing video thank you. if you get stuck with the update file make sure it's the 800mb file and if it don't work the first try installing it again it worked for me the 3rd try
best tutorial I found on this. straight to the point and great visuals. I'm so excited to have 2 tb!!
Thanks for the tutorial video man! I greatly appreciated it. I upgraded from a 500gb to a 2TB hard drive and have a ton of more space now!
Only process I understand and I finally have the confidence to do this! Thanks a lot!
I followed all your steps and we are up and running....thank you so much that was awesome!!!
I did this yesterday and worked perfectly fine thanks for the video
This was the best tutorial I found as I'll be upgrading my PS4 hard drive soon
The best tutorial ever!!! anyone can do it! just follow his instructions and you wouldn't get or encounter a problem...
Thank you for this helpful video boss!!
you are the best!!
Thanks a lot this was the most detailed and helpful how to change your PS4 Hard drive on youtube thanks man
Thanks for the Christmas present man. Directions were amazing and now I have a 2tb hard drive. Thank you and Merry Christmas
I used your methods exactly and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much for providing great instructions and doing it step by step.
Thanks for the helpful tutorial! I've been needing to add more memory to my ps4 and you made it as easy as possible for me, got it done with no issues :)
Steph Flores Glad to hear!
Great guide! Able to swap the stock hdd with a seagate sshd in a matter of minutes. Everything went fine :)
BROTIP!! When you are backing up to the USB, uninstall all your shit except for P.T so that it doesn't take 50 years to back up, then just re-download or throw the disks in once the new hard drive is in. btw good video bro this is always my go to video for when I need to remember how to do this.
Followed your step by step guide , it worked a treat thanks
Thank you for probably the best tutorial on RUclips !
if I uncheck apps. I can just RE download them?
Ratio
thank you so much!!! I finally just upgraded.......I went step by step with your video!!!! Everything works excellent!!!!!
Thanks Demoh2o! This vid has helped me upgrade my hard drive & is easy to follow. I did however miss out on PT, I must have deleted it at some point, oops. Now I can enjoy my extensive library of games, well except for PT. Cheers.
Thank you. I did this last night and everything worked perfectly.
I installed a WD Green
2TB in mine this way and it works fine. Of course, a full size HDD
won't let you put the cover back on. This is just for the HDD's that are
a tiny bit larger than the laptop 2.5 form factor.
Well explained and visual then all others that made a video for this subject.
This tutorial was awesome man, thank you so much. I'll be do this very soon (next few weeks or so). Thanks again!
Thanks so much! I followed this step by step and had no problems. :) Thanks again.
Thanks much, excellent walkthrough. The only problem I had was trying to use a 4tb drive to backup and first I had to (1) partition into 2 2-tb sections then (2) make them fat32 so PS4 could use it.
what is the name of the set up you have here please? not seen a travel system like it before and it's perfect for my son???
Thank you so much. The video together with the comments and tips made this a trouble free installation. Shout out to SZRT for the info and advice.
Thanks for the shout out! Much love man!
you really did helped me a lot in back and restore, i was too afraid of changing the HDD and everything but i did every steps you did, and it worked fine with me, thu im still restoring my data hahahaha it will take 4 hours, im little bit more than you hahaha, but really really thank you man for the video that helped a lot, enjoy and good luck with your life
This the best tutorial out there ! Thanks for making this video!!
Thank you for your support
thnx for this video realley helped alot... ran into one problem my file kept getting corrupt so i had to download and install it to my usb a few times after that it worked like a charm....
Thank you very helpful and good step by step. Others I watched skipped steps your video is the most detailed and easy to follow!!!!
After I restored my ps4, all my games showed as locked. I can't start them, what do I do? I noticed you had the same icons on your games at 24:10
Settings > PlayStation™ Network/Account Management > Restore Licenses
OMG you just made me love you even more!!
You just got me 3 trophies and platinum on BF4 (trophies were bugged, but this fixed it!)

Lol, cool stuff man! Glad it helped!
Having a small problem.
For some reason, the files on my backup hdd are in this order:
PS4 > PS4 > EXPORT > BACKUP > ...
How do I change it to have PS4 only once, without having to copy everything? The PS$ isn't recognizing it because of this.

I just used this video for the second time this year. Thank you Demoh. Also, 69 dislikes? Nice!
