We got a big bottle of this at Costco so that seems a bit odd compared to their story of a struggling small business owner. I added a bunch of it to a meatloaf and it was probably the best meatloaf I've ever made. I would totally vouch for that use of it.

@@jpablo700 I followed Adam Ragusea's video for smoked meatloaf and it came out great. The recipe calls for "a couple glugs" of barbecue sauce. You can always add more when you serve it if needs it. I did cook it in the oven since smoking it sounds like a pain.

I saw it at Costco too. It mostly seems like soy sauce and tomato, with sugar and vinegar, and perhaps alcohol. I'll have to buy it once to try, but usually I can batch a bunch of better tasting sauce for a lot less.

I found it to be too bitter and too sweet. I thought it needed more green onions. I liked it that it does not contain any preservatives, no emulsifiers, no thickeners, no fillers!! It has only sesame oil, not canola or sunflower: it does not taste greasy nor does it feel greasy. Overall if when I want sauce this is the one I'd buy. Bravo, Bachan!

I remember as a young lad overseas, eating at a restaurant where you grilled your own food. One of the sauces that were served tasted just like bachan. I did a little dance after tasting it. Meat needs no seasoning, just dipped in this golden sauce made it perfect. Now I can buy it and cook as an adult 😭🥹

It’s what makes it so versatile, it’s meant for cooking. Marinade, stir fry, grilling, sauces, etc.
If you want a traditional thick teriyaki style sauce, you just heat this up and whisk in a corn starch slurry. It’ll be thick and less salty, and better than any store bought teriyaki sauce.
It wouldn’t have been as versatile if they sold it with emulsifiers/thickening agents.

I tried out the Kinders Japanese BBQ and it's definitely a lot different than the Bachans in both consistency and flavor. More of a soy umami base than any of their flavors and is more suited to veggies. Akin to a deeper bodied hoisin sauce or stir fry sauce. Some people call the Bachans bitter, then the Kinders J-BBQ is definitely more so. Though I still don't feel that's the best term to describe it. Just very deep savoury flavours.

Vote with your wallet. Or buy it on sale. Or don't buy it at all. That's the beauty of a capitalist, free-market economy. You can always buy Baby Ray's or a store brand, but read the ingredient label first and ask yourself if you want to put that in your body. Even better? Make your own.
