I was introduced to Barsoom thanks to the John Carter movie from 2012, don't judge me. But I like what I saw so far. I'll be exploring this series further, but Robert E Howard comes first.
I was a young boy in the early 1970s and got the full series of books as a gift, always enjoyed them, even though they are pulpy fantasy it's a fantastic story!
Fantastic as always Grim Dark. And to think: Disney could have potentially had another shared universe composed of The Barsoom Series, Tarzan, Carson of Venus, and The Pellucidar Series had John Carter been a financial hit.
The four armed Martians always make me think of Thomgogs from Lands of Lore. King Gladstone is put in some sort of suspended animation spell to keep poison from killing him. Not much else is similar though haha.
Awesome video! I really love the Sword & Planet aesthetic, but I've never gotten around to reading any of the John Carter series. There was a book by Percy Greg titled "Across the Zodiac" (1880) which was a big influence on the John Carter lore. Also it's really fascinating to look back at old school sci-fi (especially far back in the late Victorian Era and early 1900s) and see how they addressed space travel from their contemporary scientific and technological frame of reference.
I just discovered this channele recently through the gods in conan videos I'm really happy yo see that you are also taking interest in other old school universe!
Awesome video!🤘 Would love to see more videos about Barsoom! Have you heard of Carson of Venus? Similar series to John Carter of Mars and is also written by Edgar Rice Burroughs!😎
It seems like your channel has been blessed by the algorithm!! I just wanted to congratulate you for this great channel before the comments get overwhelmming. More in tone with the theme of the video, while I have read some of the Conan novels, I would have never thought that the Barsoom novels were so intrincate! I guess I have to give the a look soon. Lastly, have you seen the Primal series? The feeling is pretty Conan, and I think is because of it that youtube recommended me this channel. Keep up the good work! PD: Your fitness video was also really good, these days not enough people relate the mind and phylosophical aspects with the physical workout.
I know it's taboo but I watched the movie as a kid, and I have gotten into the Sword and Planet genre through reading Dray Prescot (inspired by John Carter of Mars). I want to get a hold of the books though, but I got to admit that as a kid I found the Movie John Carter of Mars to be fascinating. Probably because I didn't quite know what to call it at the time. It wasn't really fantasy, wasn't really Scifi. I had no expectations or bias because it was entirely new to me and I had nothing to compare it to. God I love sword and planet.
Didn't read the books, but I did watch the movie and later on read some of the comics, and I remember that in the Warlord of Mars series they did this thing where the Green Martians were created by the Yellow Martians as shock troops in their plan for conquest by mixing differing animal and martian dna together, but then one day the Green Martians broke out of slavery and essentially became the roving bands of the Green Horde on all of Barsoom.
I love this kinda fiction. It started with the first Gor book ( I know) then on to conan. I think I'll be reading this one next amazing video as always
Some people may be wondering how the martians can lay eggs from which hatches a fully developed 5-year-old: The egg is small when laid, before they place it in an incubation pod/chamber that feeds the egg sunlight and moonlight for five years, where the egg and contained fetus will grow and develop. The plantmen are the only species that give birth to live young, that emerge from the parent's armpits. But, similar to marsupials on Earth, the young will stay in their parent's armpit-holes and only come out to feed until they are large enough to walk on their own.
Just a heads up, your audio mixing is unusually low compared to other videos. If I have your videos in a queue there's a noticable difference in volume.
I remember a GREAT Barnes and Noble one! They always do those and use gold leaf paper. Sadly, they are almost always limited editions that stop printing after a few years then come back, so be on the look out!
@@GrimDarkHalfOff ok cheers big guy. Also I have another question what's your thoughts on Solomon Kane and what do you think the appeals people to darker hero characters like him batman and the shadow, wolverine etc?
@@dennissroee4361 that’s simple it’s a therapeutic narrative of transferring trauma caused neurotic emotional energy into positive creative thought which leads to beneficial action. In seeing the darker hero overcome and even thrive in the dark the audience is reminded of how to turn their weaknesses into strengths thus move forward with their lives.
I talked to the guys and gals at erb at Wondercon earlier this year and they told me that they will be doing the authorized library for Barsoom, which means hardcover books in order of release. They have tarzan done right now, so it should be starting soon.
Thank you, a great video... But what about the bald headed white people of the martian "netherworld", the one I think featured in "The Gods of Mars"? If my memory serves me. Or the black pirate dudes from the martian moon?
Hey guys my dad found the video and said he liked it!

@@mirceazaharia2094 No judgment here, it’s really not a bad movie.
Your dad's cool, I also like your taste in books. So many haven't found these classics

Just out of curiosity, why is this video in the Conan lore Playlist?
Crazy that this series is 111 years old.
The first story was being released at the same time as the Titanic sank and before combat aircraft existed.

Barsoom is by far my favorite sci-fi world, love ERB!
I remember reading this book series when I was a kid! I was so enamored with the idea of living on Mars because of this storyline.
I currently got into John Carter of Mars so this video is right up my alley!
Thank you kindly for this :)
The four armed Martians always make me think of Thomgogs from Lands of Lore. King Gladstone is put in some sort of suspended animation spell to keep poison from killing him. Not much else is similar though haha.
Looked this up when you mentioned it, sounds REALLY cool!
@@GrimDarkHalfOff Yeah, they are a mix of Barsoom Martians and the Thing from the Fantastic Four visually anyhow.
@@GrimDarkHalfOff just curious will you do anymore vampire masquerade lore videos?

The pleasure is all mine! Happy your enjoying it!
Please do more videos about this series. You are the only one who talks about this series.
Beastiary of Barsoom would be a great topic 👀

This was one of my favorite book series as a kid and this video caused an automatic Sub!

Thank you for your kind words. Yes! I have seen Primal and have a loose script to do a review of primal season 1!
Please make a Barsoom lore series.
Another note on the Plantmen:
They give birth through their armpits 😅
Thanks for taking this subject, John Carter series needs more love.
I love your mars content. I hope you make more!

The genre your looking for is weird fiction! Good comment!
@@GrimDarkHalfOff I take you are also not fond of the phrase ''speculative fiction''?
I read the whole series in one night when I was gifted it. Pretty classic.

Interesting but cool can you do Tarzan next the original story not the Disney version
Best part? Most of the series is public domain, which means anyone can do anything they want with all this lore.
No one anywhere has ever mentioned Ullasses S Paxton (another earth man transported to mars 🤔

Red martians are baddies, lord gave mercy
I think you give your life to searching monsters and knowing thier strength and living type
Hello, can you make a video about the multiverse of Michael Moorcock, specifically the world of Elric?
It's in the plans for the future!
Don't forget Moorcock's Mars series as well.
What about Tschai planet of adventure by Jack Vance?
woah almost thought you had a robot voice for a second
The Kaldane remind me a bit of H.G.Wells's martians. I wonder if one is inspired by the other

had to Crank up evrything to understand yu..
When I can afford a better mic I'll let you know and thanks for watching!
The races of Barsoom remind me of the evolutionary races of color from the Urantia Book.
Plz me noob about Conan lore what Is best video to start
Did you do the white Martians, I forgot what they are called
I remembered, the Thurns are the priest of the white martians
Hello 👋 I am like button clicker number 1,000!!!!!!🎊 😊❤
The John Carter series began in 1912.
Superman began in 1930. So... what influenced what?
I say this jhon carter white four hand ape can easily beat all kind of ape in conan lore
"conan exiles" hahahah
I hope the ghost of ERB visits George Lucas and demands a Thank You.
Me too
Wait wait wait they all lay eggs even when mating with humans wtf.
Martian biology my dude
@@GrimDarkHalfOff That is the biggest double take I've ever done listening to your stuff. And I listen to your conan video playlist like twice a week!
Yup, the humanoid martians convergently evolved like both primates and monotremes
You don't read early 20th Century pulp for the scientifically accurate portrayal of biology. Especially if it's Lovecraft.
@@AlexGoldhill This wasn't written by Lovecraft but by a contemporary of his.
The ecology of Mars is ridiculous. If hexapodal lifeforms were the norm, there would be no tetrapods.
That’s the way I like it
What is woola?
Woola is woola
@Grim Dark (Half Off) good enough
Not watching because I want to read John Carter first
Lol he was a confederate soldier. I forgot about that. Boy. That didn't age well.
You could make Venus next
