The phrase "ahead of their time" is often overly used when describing authors. But Edgar Rice Burroughs was ridiculously ahead of his time. Not only in his pioneering sci fi tech concepts, but his story arcs and characters as well.
agreed! it's a shame that, in the age of big budget movies, we're not getting well-made movies based on Burrough's works. When people mention the name 'Tarzan', for example, they only picture a jungle man... but, in actuality, Tarzan has fought aliens, monsters, dinosaurs, dictators... a faithful Tarzan film series in modern day is FAR overdue. Everything Burroughs wrote and created is perfect for today's cinema.
I just want to say it's wonderful to see people working to keep this series alive and generating fresh takes on the world and its cultures almost 110 years later. All that artwork is incredible, so much better than the comics I still see coming out with art that looks like it's from the 90s. I hope the game has done well for you all.
I have read all of the Burroughs Mars books, and have re-read them for the past 45 years. This is an excellent synopsis of the Barsoom genre. Well done.
I just watched it for the 10th time..i Really got it now..the film is a masterpiece...at least 2 incredible scenes...maybe more and no bad scenes...if u love sci-fic / fantasy / love stories, a must c movie
I love you guys, seriously. No one has brought my favourite franchises to RPG life like you have. Can't wait for payday, so I can throw some more money at you 😀
I love this novel, when I ran out Conan novels to read , somebody (can’t remember who) give this book to read and told me “ think as this sword and sorcery into swords and science and u hook on it , wanted to read it again…….. heavy metal YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I got introduced to Barsoom way back in college in 1975. The son of the family I was boarding with had a few of the novels. It impressed me enough to order the entire series and I've read it through several times. I always thought the John Carter movies was pretty good and had hoped there would be further ones. As usual, most sci fi doesn't make money enough to impress the producers.
One of the finest fantasy novels ever written. The first five books and one later hit of greatness are absolutely spellbinding, and I remember almost every detail to this day.
I am an old fan of John Carter. Started reading these again. Read the first time in 1984. The only one I didn’t care for was John Carter of Mars, which was rumored to have been written by his son, as it did not read at all like Edgar had been the author. I will have to look into this number 12. I was not aware of it until just a few days ago.
Great video. I'm reading the first in the series currently and really liking it. Some good visualizations and information about the society here. It really helps to put everything I'm reading about in proper context. And, I love the accent :)
Gods of Mars is the only book I have ever thrown. So much suspense and non-stop action only to end of a cliff hanger. 13 yr old me couldn’t take it. I had to special order these books and they took weeks to arrive
@@ronratcliffe2219 I first discovered Tarzan of the Apes ( and 12 more in the series)at my grandparents’ house when I was in 4th grade. @@ronratcliffe2219 hello again! Just a little more discussion with another enthusiast...When I re-read Tarzan and the Ant Men a few years ago, I was surprised at the political commentary in the book. Very much appreciate this vid, very well presented. Learned a great deal. And I liked the movie a whole lot, a classic for its fans, far superior to most of the forgettable shallow action movies being made.

Wow !, no wonder the movie struggled, still a good watch though, you did a great job in a very short time, I might have a look for more of your videos.
I'm more of a fan of E.E. Doc Smith and the Lensman series, or Dumas' The Three Musketeers. But after listening to a number of Burrough's books off Libirvox, yeah. The guy knows how to tell a very good story, the classics are far better than most modern stuff written today. As well as us now knowing Mars can't support any life, so it's best to think of this as an alternate reality story as well. Especially as there are newer sci-fi that use the idea of terraforming the inner planets for colonization. So why can't an alternate Mars have life on it.
Any similar one of these for Carson Napier of Venus series? It was also a Edgar Rice Burroughs novel in a similar style to John Carter. Wonderful mythology

That's why you watch the movie/TV series first! You will not believe how low of an IQ and how weak a person the portrayal you've seen is in comparison to the Lord Of The Jungle in the ERB books! They had to "tone it down" to make it look like the actors (and stunt people) could actually do the things Tarzan does even for a movie audience. Teaching yourself to read and write a language you don't understand? Tarzan did it.

It combined fact, fantasy a message about eco politics. The time travel bit was just a writers trick tell a good story. I think Burroughs made the stories fat too complex and political.
Yeah, more of what we need. Dead authors having their works deconstructed to death because they fail to appease the Grand Inquisitors of the Holy Church of Intersectionality and Wokeness. So brave!
I noticed its always a Caucasian man with Anglo Saxon name that goes to another planet... Never an Asian, an Arab, an African, an Inuit, etc... Funny thing.
it depends on who is writing the book. the writer was a caucasian so the hero of the series was a caucasian. if the story was written by an asian, the hero would surely have been an asian. and do you think if an arab wrote some story he or she would put a non arab as the major character?
We are often the heroes of our own fantasies. John Carter and Lord John Greystoke (akaTarzan) especially, are glorified/ idealized versions of Burroughs himself. This surprises some as the character portrayed as Burroughs for the books serves merely as the narrator, relaying and publishing the heroes' exploits.
