This is genuinely some of the best advice I've ever heard. I spend far too much time over-analysing my work. Often I listen to a loop so many times that I start picking it apart and eventually I end up hating it and throwing it away. It's a really unhealthy cycle. I've always admired people who are confident enough to just go with an idea and not waste time worrying about how it will measure up at the end.
Something that helps me in those miniscule beat blocks is watching others make beats. It just makes me want to create something when I'm done watching that person.
Kenny Beats gave me the "make one beat a day" advice a few years ago in a Loudpvck stream. What he actually said was "make something new," so even if it's not a beat, make a new sound or loop or something. I followed with it for a while, and it works. It's just hard to do sometimes, ya know?
It's definitely hard sometimes. I've tried this as well, with no expectations when I sit down at the computer or MPC or keyboard. I just wanna bang out a cool sound. But it ends up sound like complete trash to my ears for some reason. And other times I'm not even in the mood to make beats but I have nothing else to do, and I can make whole beats. LoL what?
I think the most important thing people forget is that music is supposed to be fun to make. I used to get really pissed off when i didn't have any inspiration. But when I'm just fooling around with sounds it sparks my inspiration most of the time.
Dude. You are 100% right. Making a new beat every day is the way. If nothing else is will make you more proficient with your equipment. I’ve only been making beats for a year and making a beat every day when I get home from work has made my beats better and allowed me to really master my MPC.
I find that loopers really help. There are VST ones (I use Enso). You're playing in little elements in layers to build up to an eventually dense piece, maybe as little as one note or sound per take, and with every take you're forced to think, "Shall I reverse this? Use effects? Change the speed of the whole loop, now? Delete the layer?" It's a great way to create a motif that suggests the rest of a track, and it keeps you putting one foot in front of the other towards whatever this thing is going to be. I might come back to unused ones months later when I realise I've got something saved that would fit into a new track really well.
I think what I struggle with is making beats that aren’t truly ass because I walk a very fine line 😂 that’s why I’m so inconsistent because I’ve got a huge folder of beats that just don’t hit the same as some
I remember that in 2016 I saw a video from someone who said “enforce yourself to make a beat in 1 hour every day for 30 days. It doesn’t matter if it’s shit or not, or if you’re inspired or not, just enforce yourself to create something, instead of waiting for inspiration to come”, and I did that. At first, tracks were shit, but as days passed, I came up with better melody ideas and suddenly I was inspired and actually wanted to create music. I remember often getting frustrated by being limited to just one hour, so there were times I spent the whole day creating a track, because ideas were now flowing. I uploaded the best ones to SC and receiving good feedback was also motivating. It was beautiful. That moment was the biggest creative boost I’ve ever had. I now had a formula, discipline and workflow. Bad thing is I had to stop because I developed ear wax around 1 or 2 months later, lol. Then college and work made me had to stop and stopped doing music as regularly, and of course I’ve accumulated a lot of unfinished projects. I’m motivated to start producing constantly again. Right now I feel rusty and not so creative, but I’ll try this 30 day method again to see how it goes, because there’s nothing as rewarding as coming up with music you actually enjoy listening.
Man watching your videos have made me fall in love with making music again. I’ve been doing this for a living for the past few years and it’s become monotonous. But seeing your passion and your different way of thinking resparked that inner child in me that was so damn curious about sound design and production that I could lock myself in a room for 2 days straight playing with synthesizers and not give a fuck about the world outside! BRB, bout to make some beats
the thing i do for beat block is not even try to make a beat just make something and experiment with fx and cutting it up now even if you didnt make a beat you made this crazy reverb chain that you can reach for another time. more likely than not if you made something sound really cool youll want to make a beat with it
Just watched this today and I've just made the fastest beat I've ever completed. Half hour or so. Before I would be critiquing every last bit, but I just laid it down and got it done. I feel this could be the game changer for my perfectionism so thankyou
for some reason I always feel like im behind where I should be. I always think about it too much too as if I can't export it unless it sounds like Dr. Dre made it. This really opened my eyes. Thank you!
Im dealing with this right now. The part thats most frustrating is that I can never find good samples and Im constantly digging for dope sounds and cant never find anything I like.
Forget music this can be applied to all content creators! Big love this has helped me so much, even if I am a video editors this trick has helped me too, thanks ❤
Im mostly stuck in making 16 bar loops with insane quality sounddesign, kicks snares 808 and all that jazz. I never really do buildup or finnish a track and end up with 1000 unfinnished projects. Sometimes i just go through all my projects and enjoy some alot and redo them with my 'new learned' tricks to make everything sound better and harder. Now im kinda stuck in a beat block and dnno what to do. This video made me think i should do like a challenge in 2022 where i finnish a beat daily or weekly and store it for myself or upload it to some 0 follower soundcloud page. Also thinking of getting like a juicy new vst to make the sounds i want to use... might get nexus vst or some kind of other vst that can blend psytrance-synths into my 'future-knock' style bounce
It’s killing me right now. I get stuck in this feeling not feeling satisfaction to do anything and don’t feel motivated or feel any satisfaction from anything it sucks
Don't take a break... it might be helpful but if you wanna grow fast don't do that. Just make a beat everyday it'll take only like 1-3 hours or something just take your time and DON'T TAKE A BREAK Edit: i actually think i was wrong, if you feel like you've been working hard alot for months like me and just can't make something like before anymore, i think a 1 or 2 week taking a break would be the best. Just like decap said
Yeah I think a break is important cause just like a muscle, creativity needs breaks. I'm also doing a song a day for a year challenge right now and I'm 265 days in and ALL I WANT is a goddam break like holy jesus I would do anything for one. But I can confirm that doing a song a day was the best decision I've ever made
Guys if you're really stuck you can put the ego aside, remember with any art you don't even need to put your name and face to anything if you don't want to, in theory you could even still get returns from an alias etc. where nobody even knows who you are really! Just sayin that safety could get the ball rolling
Thanks for the tips and inspiration Bruthaman. I tend to be all in my head when it comes to my tracks that I hack it all up trying to fix it. I will keep pluggin away without judging.
I'm into making lofi, and this is my first beat block ever. I listen to other peoples lofi and Im just unable to achieve that massive watery like sounds and stuff, so I just been going on Ableton putting chords down then just delete the session and do something else. will try this tho ig..

Yep just create and let it be what it is.
Bruh I needed this
Beat timers dude. I feel like they're such a good way to get rid of that analysis paralysis
big mood
get stuck in the loop far too often for far too long
bro this is what ive been doing for so long man lol, just gets frustrating in the end and makes me bin the entire loop/project.
Can't describe How badly I needed this at the moment right now.
This is that one I needed

@@matthewutley5370 It's a wild thing that's not talked about enough in the industry. And it's cool that people like Decap are being open with it!

Beat block is like a producer's kryptonite. So good to see you tackle this topic 🙏 Daily beats have really helped me
The most important thing: You have the drive. You're here. Use this same energy and apply it to your art and what you're most passionate about.
from now on every single day!

Sound design usually does it for me 😎
Never a truer word spoken

FAX bro I made a simple beat yesterday with a loop, drum break and 808 and it came out fuego! Decap out here with the fax and data!!
im in the thick of it
Inspiration is in the little things. Your muse whispers to move the little things not yell at you to sit down
i've made a beat every day this year, thanks for the affirmation and inspiration to keep going!

I never show my work to anyone, so i got that "no intention to show" checked, easy task, decap :D
everytime he smirked it kinda triggered us but true. He knew ours.
Man, thanks for that video ! You posted it 2 years ago and 2 years later, it helped someone: me ! Again, thank you !
Practice makes progress

You are sharing gold! Thanks Decap🙏🔥
the best part was you made the beat just like we do our trash beats 🤣🤣. you're hella inspiring bro 💪

Really helpful as always, I'll keep that in mind for when I come across beat block..🙌
That advice goes crazy.
If you have to wait for inspiration, you're doing it wrong. Inspiration strikes when it finds us working.
I Always go in to a Beat w/o the Intention of Showing anyone. Always Helps Me Out !!!🔥🎯

Block anything is emotional , accept everything you do won’t be good and your good
like always on point, thanks DECAP needed this
Best advice I’ve seen on RUclips, I had to stop making beats for a bit because of school, and I can’t just create no more
decap never lets you down ♥ thank you bro
