Gert. What a wonderful magical mystery tour round the registrstion of the organ. I was both "bamboozled" and enchanted! It was so interesting to learn how you paint musical pictures with the change in registration. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your passionate and knowledge.
Thank you - so clearly explained. Over the years I can recall these stops on reed organs, electronic organs and pipe organs. You could not have gone through it more clearly.
Thank you. This video makes me appreciate the artistry and technical know-how of the various registrants who have performed with you throughout the years. I love them all!! I miss Jan.
A very interesting and informative video, which gives a good insight into the King of Instruments'. Thank you so much to Gert for explaining everything so well, and for sharing this with us. I am already looking forward to the next concert!
Heartfelt thanks for your very clear comments and demonstration of organ registration. Long ago, as a young seminarian (Boston, USA) I advised on the registrations for a fellow seminarian organist, and later as curate in a NY City parish assisted in the installation of a 32' bombard stop ( capped 16' ) suspended horizontally. What a joy: when played, I was never sure whether it was the nearby subway roaring into its station!🤔🙂. In later years, I oversaw installation of several historic organs in Vermont churches, successfully, but wish I'd then had your outstandingly excellent demonstration to use then to show my parish commities. Long ago, for me, as a concert organist, church musician, and organ scholar, you are, to my ear, unsurpassed!! Even at 80, I will return again and again to reference this demo -- and to the excellent concerts in which you personifiy in your exhaustive knowledge of organ sound and registration. MULTOS BRAVOS (and all best wishes to you, your lovely wife and child !!) You and your music are truly, especially in these troubled times, a gift from God. As a humble old musician and clergyman, to a young humane genius : thanks be to God, and you, for keeping our art alive!!!!!
Your knowledge of the organ is a great asset to your performances. You have been a good student of your profession. Always look forward to your future concerts.
Excellent video. Thanks. Very clear concise overview of some of the issues snd choices. I liked your choice of the illustrating the stops using the Schnitger Organ in Groningen.
Thank you for explaining the organ. It really helps to understand it better. Our own personal lesson from the Mastro himself, Gert, teaching us Organ Registration 101 🤗
Vriendelijke groet, Annemieke Lustenhouwer
Thanks, Gert for all your efforts to promote the culture of organ music and the knowledge about the instrument. Your talent as a musician is unique but you passion for organ is shared. Just keep it up!
This was most interesting. I remember a video when you were in the organ Loft of a Church explaining registrations. This reminded me of it. Thank you, I look forward to you've next live stream.
I use to work for an Organ building company. Here is some really heavy food for thought. The pipe organ was one of the most complex man made pieces of engineering for MANY years. It is very under appreciated for what little technology folks had back in the day. The one thing that we will always argue over repeatedly is MIXTURES. heh. any organ builder will feud over the discussion of mixtures. its just one of them things.... :)
This video combined with some Flentrop videos on organ building give a good basic overview of an organ's mechanics. How everything works together, is finally "mixed" by the player, and produces music. From Chicago, U.S.A.
So, I watched this video TEN times in a row and memorized every stop name you mentioned, but when I sat down to FINALLY play Bach I still couldn't get past the first measure! I thought this course would finally do it for me!!! But, NO. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!! My dream is destroyed. I've given up completely. That new 4-manual organ I bought for $138,000 goes into the trash can today!!! /s
Thanks for all the explanations Mr. Van Hoef! I believe modern organs are a software miracle, being able to reproduce - almost seamlessly - the sound of the wind pipes thru the loudspeakers. I listened to one of this newer software defined organs, which looked similar to yours but not so good, and I initially refused to believe to my ears. Certainly there is a difference with the spatiality of tens of thousands of pipes - but the results are unbelievable nonetheless. I'm grateful that you have shown how to register your new wonder organ machine.
Amazing! It's making the whole art of organ playing sound fascinating! I'm not a musician, just a listener and this will make my listening so much more interesting.
I really appreciate the detailed explanation. I tried to get my uncle to teach me registration but he could not explain it as well and now he is gone to be with the Lord. His favourite stops were the Viola de Gamba and the Voix Celeste.
Gert thank you for a very interesting explanation, I will mostproberly watch and listen to the video quite a few times more to understand it even better, and I think it will make me understand the music so much more.
Thanks, Gert, that was fascinating and instructive. I play the piano and always think the instructions are all written down there on the page. To me, it looks like the written music for the organ is just a recipe and a lot of the art goes into the mixing and 'cooking'. If I had my way I would stick sellotape over the 'tremolo' button and write on it 'do not touch'!
Gert, could you please make a video about your hauptwerk home instrument. I would love to know more about the organ , its setup and the samples you use.
I am always interested in the pieces played when demonstrating in this way, of course i recognised a couple of passages from pieces but particularly at the beginning of this video i ponder whether its just made up passages or passages from longer pieces and if so what were they, in one of your videos from a few years ago you were playing a flentrop organ, the video clip was 1.47 long. I ponder what passages you were playing then too :)))
Hi Gert, at 20:22 you played a small piece of music, I liked it and would like to listen to it in full. Please, who is the composer and what is the name of the piece?
Thanks for this informative video on registration settings. You are truly a master on the organ. One question: how do you keep track of the pedals when playing two manuals at the same time. How do you find your way around the pedals without looking down being ready for the next pedal or pedals to be played next and as fast you play the pedals ????
So good having subtitles Gert, saves you so much time. Do you do it by a voice recognition programme, I hope so. Great sound at 7/45, that looks a very high tech organ. I love to listen to it & your patient explanations. Many thanks John
I also learned in 2nd grade how to read notes. We had a music teacher that taught us how to read notes and take tests naming notes whether single, double or triple notes in the treble clef. I learned cords by having a cord organ growing up, soon there after I was able to play cords and treble clef. I would write the cords at the top of the treble clef staff and because I new where my notes were on the keyboard, I was able to play the pedal board on the organ. I had an organist at the church teach me to play the church music and add a note or 2 extra short improvise as I was playing. Then I played church services for a number of years. Now its just for my own pleasure playing an electronic keyboard. Also can play piano.
Excellent, informative presentation. Thank you Gert! ( p.s. very surprised with the amount of tremulant on the Martinikerk organ - almost like a theater organ! )
This was very interesting. I always wondered what the decision thoughts were on which stops to use and how an organist can create his own personal touch in his interpretation of a piece of music.
Fijne video Gert.
When I was a student back in the early 70s I, not being a musician, went on a short course called "The Musician Speaks" a number of well known musicians spoke about their instrument. One of them was an organist, his talk was not anywhere near as interesting as yours.

I enjoyed this a great deal as i am still learning even though I had to stop it to read the english translation. For some reason the sound quality was not as good as your concerts as I got a lot of buzzing, but I enjoyed the little bit you played as well. THANK YOU!

Gert has been giving us music for free for many years now. His music opened our hearts and minds and souls, and hopefully wallets at paypal. Organ registers have been pressed, its time now also for cash register to be pressed. By now, founds and institutions should be competing, which will donate more and offer better deal, with no strings attached. I am probably slow in my thinking, founds and worldly institutions already donated, in which case, only eventual old strings should be renegotiated and detached.
+gertrw *Thanks for an explanation of registration suitable for the music-appreciation learner.* I've a contingency project for a combination digital instrument for OMS Japanese Christian Church (Walnut Creek, CA, USA) that combines a Dolby Laboratories Atmos playback system and a 108-rank organ; in this design, I've specificated parallel principal and flute chori in four of five Divisions, including a sub-octave Gedeckt, fifth flute, and major tenth, twelfth, and minor fourteenth principals. Do Dutch organs ever have Christmas Bells, or is that only in the Lutheran churches?
Yep, a few of neo-baroque Dutch organs do have a Cymbelster (Zimbelstern) but I am not quite sure it was a common thing.
