I (and my students) did the original recording of at Maudie Ford's home in Soddy-Daisy. Ruth Myers sang lead, with her brother Jimmy singing harmony and playing guitar. Bruce Grant (a friend of theirs) also sang some harmony and played the mandolin. The Bice family were all children of Elzia Barbee (who was a great fiddler, as were her parents Frank and Molly Barbee and brothers Jim and Eldia). I recorded a bunch of tune from Elzia's youngest brother Eldia and her brother Oscar on banjo. I took Eldia and Oscar to perform at the 1978 National Folk Festival at Wolf Trap, in 1979, I took sisters Lela Davis, Maudie Ford, Ruth Myers and brother Jimmy to perform at the 1979 National Folk Festival,, Ruth died last year, she was the last of that amazing family! This song was released on my label (Pine Breeze 006, 1979) while I directed the Traditional Music Project at Pine Breeze Center. We released 8 LPs of field recordings of local traditional musicians. The 2005 Jubilee Arts reissue does not include all the songs we recorded from the Bice Family. I can be contacted at asprecords@epbfi.com for more of the recordings released and unreleased on Pine Breeze Records. Ron WIlliams
