    I bought a Ninja Air Fryer at Costco for Can$99.00. To me it was a novelty item. I already own an oven, pressure cooker, Blendtec, etc but not a convection oven. So I now have a greater variety of cooking devices. So far I have used my air fryer to cook chicken breasts and sausages. Both results were good. I expect to use it often but not daily. The info from the video was useful. I am single and 75 years old

    Glad I saw the comment about how the comments on this video swayed their decision.
    I had pretty much written off getting an air frier after watching the video, but based on the comments, the argument should be a LOT more nuanced.
    The gist I’m getting - Air Friers are much quicker, so potentially save a lot of power consumption. However because they are small, they are best suited to 1-2 person households/meals

      Exactly. I have both an air fryer and a convection toaster oven, and the air fryer is significantly better, faster, crisper. But I usually make only a couple servings at once! I got mine used, and it's super basic (single knob, no display) but fantastic. People should just get one used and try it out!

I use it much more often as a result, and I've done multiple side by side tests. He didn't actually show the results in this video. Honestly, I feel like which is better comes down to how many people you feed on a regular basis. The air fryer is better (and again, I'm speaking about the regular size, not the giant size like he used here) IF you aren't bothered by the smaller capacity and don't try to cram the food in. It is more efficient and crisps/browns better BECAUSE of the concentrated energy at close range to the food. But that efficiency won't matter if you need to feed more than a couple of people regularly. Bottom line, though, is that a standard air fryer does perform better and faster than a standard convection toaster oven. What people don't realize is that they DON'T need to buy a fancy new one. I've had my 'air fryer' for a few years now. I've found it to be the most useful kitchen item I have purchased. One thing to keep in mind, as I look at it, is that it may not be the right item for cooking a family meal because of it's size. For just myself and my wife, though, we have enjoyed the convienience.
    Sure, I cook my fries and chicken wings in there, but my favorite thing is to cook my my 'pork-butt steaks' in it. I've never had them turn out as good any other way other than outdoor grilling, which does take a watchful eye. I've thought about a counter-top convection oven (toaster oven), but they take up more counter space.

    For me, after owning both, two things the "air fryer" tops over the oven. 1 - cleaning the bowl and basket on the air fryer is all the cleaning you need to do, the oven on the other hand means cleaning the insides of an oven and if you have done so a few times, you'll know that its not as easy as just the bowl and basket of the air fryer. 2 - its compact, it just takes less space in a kitchen.

    1. It is not an alternative to frying. It bakes instead.
    2. A fan (convection) oven does a better job and is cheaper.
    3. It doesn't feed a family as it only makes small portions.
    4. It's basically a gimmick and a rebranding of a mini oven.
    5. I will not be buying an air frier.
    6. Your video was the most honest and straightforward of the ten I watched. Liked and subscribed!

    I have a Cuisinart toaster oven with air fry feature. The air fry setting is much hotter and the air is forced at a much higher speed than the convection setting; there are extra heating elements and fans. I had a dedicated air fryer before but it had limited capacity and it could never replace a convection oven; they are not interchangeable. My air fryer can do four pounds of chicken wings at once. When you compare appliances, at least compare appliances of the same or similar capacity. When I bought my Cuisinart, I got rid of my toaster, my toaster oven/convection oven, my air fryer, and my Fry Daddy. The Cuisinart also has a 'warm' setting that can be used to dehydrate bread for panko or dry fruit, vegetables, and herbs. When you ask if one should buy an air fryer, I say, "It depends on which air fryer you get".

  • @pghskin
    @pghskin 5 лет назад +21

    This video is misguided. Air fryers are not just convection ovens. Yes, they use a convection heating element, but on Air Fry mode, the fan circulates the hot air around the food and OUT of the unit. The moisture is blown out of the unit so that the outside becomes crispy as it cooks. On bake/roast mode, only the heating element is on, which keeps the moisture in.

      Can't comment on the hype. But having both appliances, I feel that this review doesn't do the air fryer justice. There are a lot more pros to the air fryer including lower power consumption, less heating time, and its ability to cook smaller portions of food. The example used is a jazzed up version--I got a 2.5-L (2.6 qt) air fryer for about $70 three years ago and it's still churning out crispy chicken and fries like a boss. They're like comparing a ball-peen hammer to a sledge hammer. You want to bake a cake, roast meats for a party, sure, use the oven. But for your every day needs, the air fryer is the more efficient tool.

    I have a $50 air fryer and a ~$130 convection toaster oven. Using it properly, my air fryer cooks everything evenly and crispy (oven quality crispy). Also finishes cooking a meal before the toaster can finish preheating. It even finishes cooking in about 50-70% of the time of what certain directions say . Compared to the toaster, air fryer cooks evenly because the heating element literally covers everywhere towards the direction on the food. The toaster (just like an electric oven), the heating element is in some odd shape that doesn't completely cover the food. So, this is going to create hotter spots and more uneven cooking. The fan helps, but can't fix that uneven heating element. So him saying you can cook a pie in that toaster, sure but it's going to have parts turning dark brown, so you'll need to constantly rotate and move it around.
    For 2 people, the air fryer is perfect. He tried to sound smart by acknowledging that it's convection heating, but clearly doesn't understand the physics on why the air fryer is better from a purely cooking aspect.

I have cooked vegetables, steaks, air fried oreos, chicken nuggets and French fries and more. Even if you pile food on top of food, as long as you stir it you'll get an even crispy coat. In my opinion my toaster oven burns food faster and cooks it less evenly, but I do have a cheap toaster oven.

    Hi :) Thank you for making the video and I enjoyed watching it, but I did down vote. You kept talking about the serving size as a negative, but for me that is a positive. You also talked about cleaning being a problem, but, unlike the convection oven, the cleaning chamber of an air fryer can be fully submerged in the sink to clean. You mentioned the noise being loud, but kitchens are loud anyway. Anyway, I felt that your video was extremely biased against air fryers, and that immediately made me think this review isn't valid.
    Update: After 6 weeks of using an air fryer, my only complaint is the temperature. With how quickly the air moves, I wouldn't mind it getting into the +400F degree range. Other than that, I love it.

      I really like my air fryer. I bought a 5.8 quart Gourmia from Costco. It's way cheaper there than trying to buy off Amazon. It's super easy to clean and comes with accessories. It's great for cooking and crisping those frozen foods that never come out the right texture between when you stick it them in the microwave. It cooks faster than conventional ovens, but raises internal temperature slower than microwaves. I like them for frozen chicken wings, frozen taquitos, "boiled" eggs, meatloaf/balls, sausages and the best tater tots I've ever had. I like that I can open it at anytime to see how things are going. You just can't do that with an oven because it takes too long for the cabin temperature to get back to where it was. As someone who was a fry cook, I do not recommend this to replace deep frying anything thicker than 1.5 cm. Some of the stuff you can fry is more like a pan fry and may require spraying oil on the food. It just doesn't come out the same texture wise as battered items dipped into hot oil. Sometimes you have to flip stuff halfway through with an air fryer. Once you do get used to what the times are, it becomes very "set it and forget it" as it provides more reliability than other kitchen appliances. It's worth a purchase.

I just made some fries, dumplings and now cooking wings all with the same grate and all really fast. This is a must have for people who want things FAST, you can even cook side dishes in there to save you time. With ovens it gets super hot, I find it takes much longer to cook foods, you gotta use different dishes, the inside of the oven can get crumbs and crap if you're not careful etc.

Cook the fish in the convection oven, while the fries are cooking in the air fryer and you are preparing the salad. With proper timing, all would be done at the same time.

    I’ve had a small convection oven like the one on the right for years. Just got a brand new one on major clearance to upgrade. I like it to cook certain things. Also just got an air fryer. Only used it twice but loving it. I will say there are only two people in the home, so we wouldn’t cook as much food as a family with children. BUT in my convection it will take about 30-40 minutes to cook 1/2 a bag of fries, spread in a thin layer on the sheet pan, to very crispy. The air fryer will get them there in about 10-12 minutes and they are less burnt and even more crispy than the convection. So even if I had to cook them in 2 batches that’s still around 1/2 the time. Not to mention the time and effort savings in cleanup. In my limited experience, it seems the air fryer is a great motivation to cook at home as opposed to eating out on a hard day. Minimal prep, minimal cook time, minimal cleanup. I now understand the hype! I will still use the convection for things like slow-roasting veggies and melting extra tomatoes and cheese on my pizza.

    He points out most of the flaws of the air fryer and pros of the convection toaster, but I think there are a few other points worth considering:
    In his example, the air fryer is more expensive than the toaster, but this isn't super accurate. They're about the same price in general and price variance is mainly from the brand. The big difference is the form factor, and there are benefits to the basket shape. It's easier to toss fried potatoes in a basket than flipping by hand on a tray. It fits taller foods more easily than a toaster sometimes. Because of the smaller chamber, it doesn't need preheating so it cooks quite fast relative to an oven.
    I would say if you have an oven already, but don't have a convection setting, then consider getting the air fryer. If you don't have an oven, then definitely get the convection toaster, since it'll fit pizzas and other wide, flat items more easily.

    I think this video was made by someone who hasn't used an air fryer. So Its not the same as deep frying. Its not supposed to be. Its supposed to be using much less, if any, fat which is much healthier. The range of sizes available is small to quite large so you choose one to suit you. Amazon have several 6 quart models that cost less than$100. You don't have to hand wash as they are dishwasher safe and most are ceramic so the non stick will not wear out. They cook MUCH faster than a conventional oven and remember the conventional oven can take up to 30 minutes to preheat. They use less electricity for a shorter time saving you money and helping the environment. They AIR fry not OIL fry. If you miss the taste of oil then simply use marinades and rubs which is not only much healthier but makes the food so much tastier, or buy a bottle of oil and drink it. Most of all don't be put off by an amateurish pretend review like this one.

    I can assure you, an air fryer isn't the same thing as a convection oven. One difference is that air fryers contain an exhaust system that blows out moisture and hot air. This means that your food gets crispier. An other advantage is that air fryers pre heat much quicker and have shorter baking times compared to ovens.

    I've used small convection ovens (cyclonic type in big clear bowl and Breville toaster oven design) for over 15 years. They work well. I've had an T-Fal Acti Fry for about 10 years. The ActiFry is limited more so. I've put off getting an air fryer for years. But I just got one today and it does a much closer job to frying than any of my convection ovens. I believe they called it an air fryer because it was designed specifically for the purpose of air frying, and not all the other things that a convection oven like the Breville will do. I have much more testing to do, but I've tried off-and-on for the last couple of years to do air frying similar to what I've seen the newer things do and the Breville just won't really do it. The first one I had, big clear bowl with the heater and fan in the lid, did a pretty good job of air frying, but these newer ones (last 5 years) are more advanced. Anyway, my main point is that they are not the same as deep frying and they are not just a tiny convection oven. They are somewhere in between. As others have put it, they are small convection ovens on steroids. The guy on this video seems to be going out of his way to be unimpressed with the whole deal. I hope he's not like that about everything in his life. At some point, people realize that you're not selective, you're just wrong.

    It may technically heat the same way as convection mode on a toaster oven, but it has a totally different form factor and is different in so many ways that I find it mind blowing that he is gaslighting people that it's the same thing - it clearly isn't just by looking at it. It's an appliance and the form and function play a large role.
    1. It's smaller - for those in apartments who move often like me this is very important. There is a reason I own this and not a toaster oven.
    2. Because it is smaller, I don't preheat it I just reheat things in it for 3-5 minutes. It has the immediacy of a microwave without soggy leftovers. You have to preheat a toaster oven and it is faster than a full size oven but not as fast as a microwave.
    3. They come in various sizes - if your normal portions don't fit in that basket you can get one that accommodates your portion size - and sure there are ones that cost that much, but that is the high end of the price, the most popular ones on Amazon cost $70-$100. I got mine on sale for $70.
    3. If I wanted to bake a pie I would use my oven 😂 they serve different functions.
    That being said this still may not be the appliance for you - it depends on YOU and your eating/cooking habits. I am a single person who orders a lot of take out so I have a lot of left overs to reheat so this is perfect for me and my needs. If you cook a lot and also reheat those leftovers I think this would be great for you too, just don't expect it to replace your oven, it's designed for convenience and speed. If you are a slow going person that cooks fresh meals each day - you can probably do without. But he makes it seem like they're a scam and they're not - they serve people like me who are impatient about food and just want a quick and easy way to make my left over french fries crunchy again for a quick lunch.

    Everyone's cooking needs are different and based on that one has to decide what appliance may be best. I landed on an air fryer after being years of hating toaster ovens but using them for small amounts to avoid the oven and avoiding frying foods at home due to the mess. I like that air fryers don't need preheating which is a huge time saver. Some foods are done in the air fryer before a toaster oven or oven would even be preheated. I like the basket air fryers because they can be used with one hand (tossing food mid cook or pouring out into bowl when done) which is great when my other hand is holding babies/toddlers. It's not great for batch cooking but I'm not trying to replace my oven, just need something small and quick to handle weeknight meals and reheating and it excels with that. It takes up less space and is quicker than a toaster oven. There are some good cookbooks available and i have been impressed by the food; the cookbooks for me are important because as you mention this is not really frying but it doesn’t cook exactly like an oven either. For me, I MUCH prefer to wash the basket of an air fryer which fits easily into a sink or dish washer than a toaster oven which does not.

    I have both a Phillips Air Fryer and the Emeril Power Airfryer 360 (which is a convection oven). The Phillips cooks much faster and evenly and is easy to clean whereas the Emeril can cook larger or more items at once but has hot spots, takes longer to pre-heat and cleaning takes more effort. As for the price, I have had the Phillips ($200) for over a year now and the parts appear to be very solidly made. I had the Emeril ($120) for a few months and the construction seems a bit flimsier. Both give satisfactory results IF one follows the instructions as they are not like microwave ovens where you just thrown stuff in. One of the best cookbooks I have found is Air Fryer Perfection by America's Test Kitchen. The chicken parmesan and pork chops recipes came out fantastic.

The air fryer is better IF you aren't bothered by the smaller capacity and don't try to cram the food in. I'm not saying they're different in how they heat. Rather, an air fryer is more efficient and crisps/browns better BECAUSE of the concentrated energy at close range to the food. *WRONG* and right at the same time.
    Im a classically trained chef and knew "air fry" is a gimmicky name. I was highly skeptical and assumed it's just a convection oven. And true an Air Fryer is just that a mini convection over.
    *HOWEVER* the fan size to heating elements is much larger. In a normal convection over the fan size is significantly smaller than the heating elements. Also the fan isn't generally above the elements themselves. Putting a fan the same size as the heating element above the element AND put that set up into a cooking area not much bigger than a cereal bowl....yes, that heat is going to be much more intense and consistent than a normal convection oven. That's why it's able to produce "fry" like qualities.
    A mini convection oven like the one on the right simply won't produce the same result.

    • @aaronstately
      @aaronstately 4 года назад +1

      That seems to be the general consensus, the ability for the "Air fryer" to brown food evenly and quickly. Through exactly as you stated... large fan small space moving that heat over the food consistently. And i should add... when you cover chips in oil, that oil is frying the chip on the surface from the heat of the fan blowing it over the surface intensely... essentially frying it.. with less oil.

    • @laverdadbuscador
      @laverdadbuscador 4 года назад +1

      @@aaronstately I mean, if you think about it. Frying food in oil, the oil is only really touching the food on the way out of the fryer. On a microscopic level the water in the food is escaping to the surface preventing the oil from entering the food. Once the steam stops the oil can then enter the food. Fried chicken for example absorbs way less grease than most people expect. But we don't say we're "boiling" or "steaming" the food. It's semantics really. If it tastes good, eat it.

    I have a good, if a bit small, convection toaster oven and I recently bought a Cosori air fryer for about 100 Canadian dollars. Hard to compare the two. I would never bake a big spaghetti squash in the toaster over while the result in the air fryer is stellar. Fish cooks in half the time. Making crispy chickpeas is the most easy thing to do in one of those things. I failed miserably to do this in the toaster over and I could never do as many as in the air fryer. You can make amazing grilled sandwiches that you turn over halfway to get a very nice coloured toast, melted cheese and hot all the way through, using nice thick slices. Making this in my oven was next to impossible. It grills unevenly, the sandwiches can easily be too thick and I can never get it both nicely grilled and hot all the way through.
    It is very easy to clean the air fryer basket in the sink with soap and a dish mop. Easy to dry also with the non stick coating that repels water. And yeah, do take good care of the coating by washing it by hand and carefully.
    Having said that, mileage may very depending on the brand and model of either the air fryer or toaster oven. My toaster oven is a bit small and I hate cleaning it. It gets gunky and things I put in it tend to easily be too big in height and sit too close to the heating elements. If you have a biggish convection oven that is working well for you, then an air fryer may bring you little more than you already have.
    If you do get an air fryer, get a bigger one. For many manufacturers, the 3.7QT takes the same counter top space as the 5.8QT. Rectangular is also more useful than circular. My basket is 9x9x4 inches.

      Agreed. Frozen stuff cooks faster, recipe testing breaded items cooks faster, homemade fries from scratch in half the time. As someone else mentioned, you gotta shake it if you overfill it, that's just common sense. You need to turn it over sometimes, same as in an oven, to get the underside done. It's just common sense. I just tell people "it's just a super concentrated convection oven that cooks stuff a lot faster for small batches". If that meets your need, then get one. If you don't have any need for those scenarios, don't get one. It's a great tool. I would rather use it any day over my nice convection oven simple because its faster to use for most things.

I think it's dishwasher safe too. The messiest thing I made was "fried" mozzarella. By the time I was done with all the batches (it was for guests I had over), it was pretty nasty. But it cleaned up just like any non-stick pan pretty easily. There was scrubbing involved, but nothing major or a "pain" or anything. Super easy to keep clean. Hope that helps.

I do a lot of wings so I can out several one layer with space between for air circulation. The type I have has shelves so I can do MORE at one time because each shelf holds several pieces, and depending on the size of the pieces, I can get 3 shelves in at 1 time! I have the Power Air-Fryer Pro Oven, 6Qt. Clean-up is easy for me...I toss the selves in hot water for a few minutes, then use a brush to loosen the bits, and pop them all into the dishwasher, bottom or top, they're metal so it doesnt matter!!! The drip pan is non-stick and it goes right in the dishwasher as well!!! Then a quick wipe, with a warm soapy cloth, nd a quick rinse with a warm clean cloth and its done!!! Easy Peasy!
