For what it's worth, he sounds a lot better live than in these recordings. Not saying he actually sounds better, rather I think they engineer the audio to have him be quieter than the other instruments. Not sure. But honestly, in my opinion, he sounds good enough. The rest of the band is good enough to carry him through the show. And it's still a really good show. Gone are the days where James is a great vocalist. Like dude, news flash, it's not 1997 anymore. There are other good prog bands out there now that are younger and have better vocals. But Dream Theater is still a really, really amazing show. My 2 cents.

Sadly an instrument doesn't change over time...but a human voice does . Cannot stop time. Poor James..i bet his diminishing skills just kills him.😢

He’s got the skills.. but we all know what you mean. Just his diminishing voice. This was my first DT show.. and I loved it but god I wish I could have seen them when they were doing 3 hour sets during the golden era and James was still nailing it. That being said I am hands down going again. I need to see them with Mr. Portnoy!

Mal. Creo que falta ensayo preparación.

After further listening, I don't know how James can record another record without some serious studio magic. James was never even close to my favorite singer, but he at least used to get the job done. I wonder if he is having trouble hearing pitch. That would better explain what I am hearing. He is close to the notes, like they are most certainly within his range, at least many of them. I don't think I could hit near perfect pitch if I couldn't properly hear the pitch.

    • @forrestperkins6237

I think he hits more wrong notes than right notes now adays. Him singing correctly is almost a fluke.

They really stripped down their stage setup, using way less equipment than they used to, there must be an attempt to save money on hiring more trucks and crew.

This band will almost have to extend instrumentals to include the least amount of vocal exposure. It sounds like James has lost quite a bit of pitch control. His notes sound very flat for me. I would hope under a doctors care, he might regain some range and control. Left untreated, I don't think it looks good. Best of health to James!

This is the most low energy Dream Theater I've seen. They're getting old... Also, James sounds terrible, even compared to the last tour. I liked this new album when it came out but even the songs on that one feel bland now while I still really like Distance Over Time.
I'm glad Portnoy rejoined the band. It seems like the perfect time cuz this is the worst shape DT has been in in a while. Again, I love ADTOE, TA and DOT. I'm talking about the last album and tour specifically here.
