Island hopping in Hawaii is absolutely worth it. The islands are all incredibly different and it’s easy to get from island to island. But it’s important to know that island hopping can be time-consuming so you want to make sure your trip is long enough for these extra travel days.

Always great information.
My first trip to Hawaii lasted theee weeks, and for the first two weeks traveled to five islands and managed to se a lot- fortunately all the inter-island transfers were on private charters so we did not waste anytime at airports. I spent third week on Maui as that was the island we went to that I wanted to spend more time on. I have been back numerous times since to to all the islands and still feel like I have not seen it all on all of the islands-every time I watch your videos, you confirm the feeling!
Thanks for the tips. I took a day tour from Oahu to the Big Island and it was the best day! Saw so much and the tour arranged everything. Love your channel.
I'd do it the other way around. I've been twice and both times it was cheaper to fly thru Honolulu to Kona instead of just Honolulu(from Boston). In Sept 2021, we did Hawai'i as a 2 state trip(with Alaska). So we figured we'd do 4 days on the Big Island, 2 on Oahu. In November 2022, we did 10 on the Big Island and 1 on Maui. I'd want 2 solid weeks on the Big Island to feel like I've seen most of what I'd want to see.
Aloha Erica and Jordan! You picked the right intro! We purchased your Maui and Hawaii guides and have made our trip plans based on your suggestions. We will be there in February and are excited to see the islands for the first time. It's our first big retirement trip. I really love watching your videos and have found them very helpful! Mahalo!
Enjoy your first big trip in retirement! Thanks for grabbing our guides and also for watching till the end. Have a wonderful trip, I know you will.
We just island hopped from Oahu over to Maui yesterday on Southwest they treated us great and on time
Thank you for the cool video about island hopping, we normally fly to Hawaii for 10 days we split it in half between two islands. Once we did a five day trip to Hawaii which was kinda nerve wracking as we flew to Kahului and flew to Moloka‘i aboard Mokolele Airlines, just worried about the weather as all our plans were for that island. It turned out fine happily. 😊
Love intro #2 and that pineapple shirt! Thanks for making these wonderful videos. I’ve been binging them and finally convinced my husband to plan a trip to Hawaii!
Always informative, thank you E & J
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video! We are Island hopping from Oahu to Maui! This video helped! Getting so excited!! 2 more weeks!! Got my guides on my phone!
Thanks for grabbing our itineraries! Have a wonderful trip and enjoy the hop.
Introduction #2!
Mahalo Erica and Jordan for such great content! I am constantly sending your videos and website links to our guests. In fact I just sent the link to a guest for your Maui to Pearl Harbor, they booked it and loved it! Much mahalo!
Thanks so much for sharing! That helps us out a lot!
Your island itinerarys are fantastic. Our first visit was 2 weeks, 2 islands. It's very tempting to hop lots but we appreciated settling in on each island. We will be back next year!
Thanks for grabbing our itineraries! I’m glad you can make it back next year.
Another informative video ❤️ thank you for helping me plan my 20th anniversary trip to Maui and Kauai last summer. Our family of 4 had a blast and made many unforgettable memories based on your suggestions on your fabulous channel 🥰💕 have a very productive and successful new year ahead 😊
Thanks so much for continuing to watch! I’m glad the videos helped. Have a wonderful new year!
Thanks for a informative video. We are going to 3 islands over a 1 month period in Aug, from UK.. can't wait. Will read your guides!
Have a wonderful month long trip!
Aloha guys, we've been living and traveling extensively in the Hawaii islands since 1991, blessed with ohana on several islands. Your video is very well done, like "travel day is a travel day, and book earlier"! As you said we also learned a lot from your video especially tips on SW air... Mahalos! We hope to get back in August, Mau'i and O'ahu, and will be watching your channel for good tips. Aloha and mahalo!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you get value from our videos after so many trips.
HVG keeps adding more and more to my list of things to do in Hawaii.
We try our best!
Thank You!
Haven't seen you all in a while. Another highly informative video. Well done!
welcome back Ken! I hope all is good!
Mum and I caught the Maui Super Ferry in 2008. She had a great time whale watching while I was sea sick. The CEO even boarded the ferry and made a quick thank you announce before we left Oahu.
I’m jealous! I never got to ride it. You got a one time in history experience
Intro 2 gets my vote :) you 2 rock! Thanks for making such great content
Thanks for watching till the end! Appreciate the vote!
Intro 2! ❤️ Thanks as always for great info!
Haha, thanks for watching till the end!
what a great video! you two are the best!
Thanks so much for watching and the comment!
Another awesome video!
It was a fun one to make. Plus, had to use up some old footage of island hopping!
Love the pineapple teeshirt. You two really do an amazing job.🤙🏽
It is one of my favorites! Drawn by a local Maui artist. Thanks for watching!
We are going 7 days Oahu and Maui.
Idea 💡 Please can you make a video about fishing? Fishing Tours, etc… fishing there should be fantastic.
Thank you for the info on this video
Intro 2 was definitely better! Sorry fella, Wifey get the win this time! My wife and I are planning our honeymoon vacation and your channel has been instrumental and amazing! Thanks so much!
I’m glad we are helping! Enjoy the trip planning.
Aloha guys, point of clarification. If you are going interisland on Southwest, you DO have to go through Ag Inspection. Southwest in is the main terminal, rather than the interisland terminal. We used to go visit my auntie on Big Island and she would send us home with lychee, mountain apple, everything. I didn't think twice about it. But, the first time we flew SW to try it out I had to leave a whole box of fruit in the airport bc they wouldn't let me through bc other flightrs NOT to interisland locations are in the same terminal and I could "give fruit to travelers going to other destinations." Kona airport once confiscated a single orange from me on a SW flight Kona to HNL. Same reasoning. Just food for thought.
Thank you for sharing! It’s not like that on Maui but good to know about the location for the other islands.
No 2. Thanks. One of the worst trips we did was fly a major airline to Oahu, 3 hour layover, then Oahu to Maui. The walk uphill with bags in tow was terrible after sitting on a plane for 10 hours. One of our best was returning. We flew early from Maui to Oahu, rented a car and drove to see Pipeline breaking, then caught our night time flight home.
Technically island hopped even though HNL was just a short layover both ways. Still felt like we got to see an incredible bird’s eye view of Oahu. Can’t wait to go there next!
I like flying into Honolulu for the views of Ko Olina and Pearl Harbor. Then a good shot of Waikiki on the way out. One time leaving HNL, I saw a nuclear sub dip below the surface.
Thank you #2
On our November 2022 flight from Maui to Oakland via Honolulu (Hawaiian Airlines) we had to go through the agricultural inspection each leg!
Intro 2! (Sorry Jordan...)
Also enjoyed your tips for Maui! We just got back and had an amazing trip.
I'm glad you went and had a great time! Yeah, #2 was better 😂
I need a “nervous” vest- you should sell vests for people as merch 😂
Aloha... what do you suggest for single travelers ~ sightseeing, hotels, island hopping etc.? 🌺
I was going to say...
Flying Mokulele Airlines offsets what you talked about with flying interisland earlier. OGG on Maui has a commuter terminal where you basically walk right on and Waimea Kohala(the flight I took) has no security. We just showed our ID, weighed our bag and on we went.
Flying Mokulele is slower, but the views are INCREDIBLE and you had more time to explore. We flew from Waimea on the big island to Maui as the sun rose. We also found ourselves at about the same height as Haleakala. We landed at about 7AM and left again about 11.5 hours later. Pull into Waimea Kohala up to about 5 minutes before your flight(they say 30 minutes before, but they'll call you at that location) get on and go. Land at OGG, walk over to the rental car center and go. We pulled back up about 40 minutes before the return flight that evening. Walked into the terminal about 25 minutes before and were on our way. Land in Waimea, walk off the plane, thru the building, into the parking lot to my other rental(free parking) and drove back to Hilo.
Mokulele will be the only inter-island mode of transport for me unless it's to connect out and get home.
We liked the first intro!!
Thanks for the vote. You’re an outlier so far!
Thank you!!
Last few days I was confusing why that molokai ferry page still exists and they are so weird
It is such a shady, fake website! Yet, people still share it. Thanks for watching!
Was the clip played at about 4 minutes and 15 seconds the Secret Falls kayak/hike on Kauai?
I like Intro 1 (not sure that you care, a year after it's posted. 😂)
Thanks for another great video! We’re heading back to Aulani this August for a second Oahu trip. We’d like to take one day and fly to a different island. Which would you choose?
The Big Island to see the volcano erupting or Maui for the Road to Hana, see these tour packages as they specialize in one day trips with everything included: thehawaiivacationguide.com/activities/one-day-island-trips/
Did you need to do anything fancy with the pup with the inter island travel?
Nope, once they are allowed into Hawaii then inter island doesn’t have any processing
#2 but both are great :)
And I thought only Erica and my mom watched till the end.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide 🤣😂🤣
For the Big Island volcano tours you mentioned that book everything down to the flights. Is there a website you recommend for me to book through?
They book it all for you. You just have to get yourself to the departure airport, they’ll pick you up at HNL. You can book here and learn more thehawaiivacationguide.com/activities/pearl-harbor-tour-from-maui-kauai-or-big-island/
Do you have any videos about a Maui Lanai combo? Haven't been to Lanai yet...
This one is dated but will give you an idea, the ferry leaves from Ma'alaea Harbor now: ruclips.net/video/-8xfJvFqxLw/видео.html
See our article too: thehawaiivacationguide.com/things-to-do-lanai-hawaii/
Where do you live on Maui? We live in Makawao.
I never thought to consider inter island flights when deciding on islands! But now you have me considering it. If we pick kauai and big island in ten days can we fly from
Big island to kauai direct ??? We are a family of 5 so want to find those $39 flights!
thanks for watching! Take a look now for flights. I'm afraid Southwest doesn't have as many direct flights, you may need to fly through HNL. Hawaiian Airlines should have a LIH to KOA flight.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you so much. Do you have any videos on lodging on the big island for larger families that need a kitchen and two bedrooms? I’m having trouble finding videos that recommend places that have condo style accommodations. Everything seems to be for luxury hotels that can only fit four in a room. We are a family of five and we really need a washer, dryer and kitchen. Thanks so much.
What company do you recomend for the all inclusive day tour?
Hawaii Tours is a local company or they contract out to the best local companies. Their Oahu circle island tour is a good one: thehawaiivacationguide.com/grand-circle-island-tour
We always stay on Maui but really want to try swimming with the Manta Rays on the Big Island. Is there a tour you recommend for that?
See our website for recommended tours. We have three depending on where your staying: thehawaiivacationguide.com/activity_category/hawaii-big-island/
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Thanks to The HVG, we chose Manta Ray Advocates. AMAZING tour! No boat, swim maybe 50 yards off shore and we spent almost the entire time in the water with 2 beautiful manta rays.
@@derbagger22 thanks for the recommendation, that sounds amazing!!
If you're trying to see the main 4 islands, you need at least 3-4 days to see one to the fullest. Very against doing day trips or the expensive hops like those packages.
Hey guys, an you realistically island from Honolulu hop by boat? We are travelling over from UK so my wife wants to avoid any more planes whilst we are out there.
no chance, there are no boats from Oahu to another island. I don't even think a private charter will take you as the channels can get so rough. It is a 20 minute flight, she can make it!
Please inform me about the Hawaii Cruises to Island Hop.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is your only option that is stationed in hawaii
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
Thank you for that information!
If I am flying between islands do I also have to be at the airport 2 hrs before my flight?
it is recommended as there is no separate terminal. The TSA lines can get long, especially during the summer.
When one has years of boarding inter-island plane footage, one has to make a Hawaii inter-island travel guide video. I hope these tips help with your Hawaii vacation! Our biggest tip is to grab our island itineraries (shameless self-promotion): thehawaiivacationguide.com/best-hawaii-itineraries/
How do you get to Molokai if the ferry no longer goes there?
You fly on Mokulele Airlines
Is it possible to visit the big island in one day? I booked in march for Oahu
Yes, people do it! They offer a tour package also (see the description if interested).
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thanks. definitely will look into it.
What is the best sunset cruise on Maui?
check out Sail Maui if you're in West Maui and Kai Kanani if in South Maui, we have discounts and info here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/activity_category/maui/?_activity_type=sunset-cruise
Hi! I planing to travel to Hawaii soon! (Maui) My question is: do I have to rent a car or I can use Uber to visit the beaches or go to my activities? Thank you!!
Maui is hard to get around without a rental car but Erica shares 11 tips on how to do it here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/how-to-get-around-maui-without-a-car/
You need to rent a car.
Didn’t know that you could fly with your dog in the main cabin. How do you do it?
she can fly on select airlines (Alaska for one) and on certain types of planes because she is so small. She fits under the seat. She isn't a service dog. thanks for watching!
Did you guys take your dog with you when you vacationed to Hawaii, or was that when you were living there? I have a dog, but figured it's better not to bring him. Just curious. Really enjoy your channel.
Aloha Ken, thanks for subscribing. We lived in Hawaii for a few years so we went through the 6 month+ process of avoiding quarantine on arrival for our dog. When we island hopped, we took her with us a lot. There is no issue once your proved to be rabies free in the state.
#2
Thanks for watching till the end. Erica is always right on stuff like that
Why didn’t you mention Mokulele airlines?
We did! We talked about it as an option
The truth about the superferry is that special interest groups, funded by the airlines, rental car companies, and Young Brothers to oppose the shut the superferry down to eliminate competition. 🤔
You guys have a cool channel though 🤙🏽
That’s what I thought was the story too but I’m enjoying the other perspectives/backgrounds on the Superferry. Thanks for watching!
H.E.I. the parent company of Young's barge and Hawaiian Airlines and an extremely corrupt and influential monopoly had it shut down. I went on it several times, it was great, wish we had it today.
I wish they had a ferry.
OMG, enjoy your vacation. Island hopping wastes time you should be enjoying the gorgeous beaches! Go to one island and see EVERYTHING, then go back for another trip!!!!!!!!!!
Now onto 4th island we ran out of islands 😂😂😂
@@saikrishnagangavalli8477 excellent
But there are more, Vegas is the 9th Island.
@@stargazer5073 Vegas used to be home 😂
The protests against the Hawaii Superferry were not against the ferry. They were against the Hawaii Superferry corporation that insisted on operating while refusing to follow the law by conducting an Environmental Impact Statement, or "EIS." People in Hawaii protested in an effort to keep Hawaii beautiful and biodiverse.
As it turned out, the Superferry corporation never intended to stay in business. It was a way for the boat's manufacturer to get through sea trials that would prove the seaworthiness of the vessel, so as to win a couple of military contracts worth billions of dollars, in a bidding war with two other ship manufacturers. They did win the contracts -- for the JHSV and for the LCS warships.
This explains why Governor Lingle, a Republican (which is rare in blue-state Hawaii) was happy to flout federal law and do what she could to waive the EIS requirement. John McCain was running for president in 2008, and she was hoping that her "favor" for his buddies at the Hawaii Superferry Corporation would be returned had he won, by an appointment in his cabinet.
Thanks for sharing! I hadn’t heard that story on the Suoerferry.
What a total load of BS. NONE of what you claim is true.
Intro 2
the clear winner so far! thanks for the vote
Most important tip is not to leave your valuables in your locked rental car.
Erica, you have very nice teeth.
Hawaii is the greatest grifter ever. Sometimes I wonder why people still choose to visit.
