    Hey GT, can you comment on the terminal ballistics of the Mk18? Specifically, what would you consider to be the maximum effective range with this 5.56 cal. SBR given a single center mass shot with Mk 262 mod 1 ammo? I'm considering building a Mk18 type upper for home protection against anything from an emaciated zombie to a 200 lb mountain lion. My data, based on having a minimum impact energy of about 700 ft-lb for creating a good wound channel in flesh is about 100 - 120 yards.

    Hey brother, what's your view on the SF3P flash hider in combination with a 10.3" barrel with use with the SOCOM556-RC? Do you see extreme wear on the can's blast chamber and baffles? Just curious. I ran 100 rounds through mine and noticed some wear and am considering just running the gun unsuppressed 100% of the time. FWIW I plan to run the can on my 11.5 upper with a muzzle brake 100% of the time.

    In my experience the 7 inch AR barrels are fine if you are running a silencer on them all of the time. You mentioned that you advise against any barrel shorter than 10 inches. The silencer increases the back pressure and that makes it cycle more reliably and that seems to be the biggest problem with the really short barrels. If you were talking about getting bullets to stabilize out of short barrels I believe that you have to shoot several different bullet weights to see which one gives the best accuracy. Is there another factor to consider if using a short barrel AR? What weight bullet do you shoot suppressed and non suppressed? I hope I don't come off as a know it all I am just looking for a little more data.

    • @jonsingleton203
      @jonsingleton203 2 года назад +2

      No the problem with 7" barrels is the velocity on 556 is so slow its basically a 22lr and running a suppressor on it is a joke most suppressor will void the warranty on a 7" barrel because 75% of the power gets burned inside the can and will destroy it .

    I started running the 11.5 barrels a little over a year ago n I'm doing another pistol build currently, and I also switched to geissele rails which presents a problem with handguard length. I must have watched Mike n Lucas's mk18 vid 70 times to see what an 11.5 would look like with a 9.5 rail. I've decided to order yet another geissele rail n another 11.5 because in my mind the 1 extra inch sticking out not looking cool just doesn't outweigh the practical mechanical advantages. Maybe if enough of us bitch geissele will make a 10.5... or even a 10. Anything really. 9.5-13 seems like such a gap of waste when considering market potential. But after paying close attention to my handling of a longer rail system by another manufacturer I realized I wasn't using that space anyway. I kind of realized i wanted a socom FSB gun of some variety a few weeks ago.... those rails are 7in lol... I'm learning (sadly)- that I will never look that cool. Damn shame.

    One issue with using the pressure switch on top of the PEQs here in Alaska is with gloves. We lose alot of dexterity. My pressure pad is in the exact location on my M4 where your surefire pad is at. I've wanted a mk18 personally for a while, but could never justify the tax and registration. Hopefully the HPA changes that precedent and SBRs are next.

    Hey Garand Thumb,
    I looked everywhere but couldn't find a video on it, but what Spec Unit were you in, and when you are in the military/one of the special forces units, do they let you customize or build your own setup for the field? Or are you issued everything you use?

    Are you active duty? If so how hard was it getting a SBR and suppressor?
