How Red Bull's other team built F1 2023's slowest car

  • While one of Red Bull’s teams has built a stunningly fast car already looking nailed on to win both titles yet again in 2023, its other team is faring a lot worse.
    AlphaTauri had the slowest car on average over the first three races of the season, it has not looked easy to drive at all, and one fortunate point in Australia leaves the team joint-last in the championship, ahead of Williams only on countback.
    It’s surprising for a team that won a race in 2020 and had its best ever season in 2021 to have fallen so far, especially given its links to Red Bull Racing, which has produced another world-beater.
    But big changes are already being made at the track and away from it, and more are coming.

    • @Trendyflute
      @Trendyflute Год назад +4

      I'm not sure he's turned a corner; he is slowly but steadily getting more consistent and level-headed and that hasn't stopped in 2023 so good on him, but honestly a big thing making Yuki look better this year is swapping Gasly for De Vries. I like Nyck in F1, I was excited for him to get his chance and he still deserves to grow into it, but he's not been excelling in F1 so far and we might have to admit that the Williams was actually a properly quick car at Monza 2022 and De Vries maybe was a bit flattered by the whole situation.

    • @CharlesFreck
      @CharlesFreck Год назад

      Unfortunately, I doubt he'll get a spot in Redbull. Lawson won his first Super Formula race, and really should've been 3rd in the second, but got a penalty and ended 5th. That's his first weekend in a car he's never driven, and practice got cancelled. He qualified 3rd and won a race with zero practice in the closest thing to a Formula 1 car outside of being in a Formula 1 car. There's just no way Redbull is going to do a comparison between Yuki and Lawson and go "Yeah, let's go with Yuki". Super Formula is much closer to F1 then F2 is. I think we'll see Yuki replaced at the end of this year by Lawson, so Yuki needs to earn a place in another team by then. Unless DeVries fails to improve, in which case Lawson will replace him. But Redbull absolutely wants Lawson as a potential replacement for Perez after 2024. Yuki just has not shown any promise to be the next Redbull driver in his 2021 and 2022 seasons, and while he's been very consistent this year, consistency isn't what Redbull are after, especially with Verstappen indicating he might not even want to race in F1 until his contract expires in 2028. They need the next prodigy, and Yuki just doesn't seem to fit the bill.

    This highlights the true genius of Adrian Newey for successfully developing a superior aero design. No other team has come close. As we have seen with other teams using the Ferrari or Mercedes power unit, winning performance is not strictly based on the PU. I am really surprised with the arrogance on the Alphatauri team refusing to adopt as much RB technology as is allowed, because they want to have more pride in saying it was designed by Alphatauri? Give it up!!! RB clearly has the most successful car design in this new era, so they should be happy that, as a sister team, they are allowed to borrow a significant amount of that development and use it.
    Look at the rapid turnaround at Aston Martin by just hiring some RB designers!

      Taking all the parts of another team is a bad idea. Because what if that team decides "hey, all our engines now are changing shape slightly" or "our gearboxes is getting a little longer". Sure, the change fits in their chassis and their body no problem, but suddenly, you're entire car has to shift to accommodate a new part. All that aero you spent ten thousand hours perfecting is gone in an instant because someone else changed a small part, and now you're bodywork has changed and ruined it all. That's why teams try and limit how many parts they get from other teams. Because you lose so much creative control. You can't build the best car you can, you've got to build a good car with parts you can't control.

  • @Srga91
    @Srga91 Год назад +4

    Isn't there a simpler answer to this question? It's still Minardi! 😅😉
    On a more serious note, their approach to the development of the car, illustrated at 6:53, offers an explanation to why they might struggle so badly. The engineers at Faenza believe they can do just as well as RB can at Milton-Keynes and that's a big misjudgement! Gerhard Berger identified that as a key weakness already in the late 2000s and wanted to move the team closer to RB. As long as they could use RB-spec parts they were fine, but as soon as they had to develop most of the car on their own, they underachieved.
    2021 proved that buying and copying as much from RB as possible was the right way. At times they were faster than Ferrari or McLaren and not even that far off RB & Mercedes.
    As far as moving their facilities to the UK is concerned, it sounds easier than it really is. They can't just close the factory at Faenza and move everything to the UK within a couple of months. The labour laws in the EU are pretty strict and it will take time for RB to figure out a way how to solve this issue (breaking up legally binding contracts on Italian territory). This might take several years.

    Given Red Bull and Alpha Tauri have the same owners, it plausible or likely that Red Bull's dominance is a result of this clear advantage.
    Two teams owned by one group is a clear conflict of interest and should never have been allowed and should be changed URGENTLY to gain some sporting integrity/credibility.

  • @oj7177

    Shouldn't honda buy or become alphatauri's main sponsor?
    Their engine is great, and they won't supply redbull redbull from 2026 onward, so they need to find someone else, but so far nobody has made a deal with them, right?
    Yuki is japanese and close to honda, iwasa is one of the possible drivers to be promoted to at, and is japanese. Another candidate is lawson, who's racing in superformula now
    Alphatauri could be an investment for honda, especially if they'll move to the uk, and save Honda the cost of that. Their engines will be on the grid, they'll have great marketing because of the successes they have/will have, and a chance to finally do well in f1.
    Plus, that could attract toyota to come back and bring some more money and fame to f1, which they always like
    With cadillac possibly entering, audi buying sauber, rumors around hyundai joining, and my possible theory about honda (and hopefully toyota), a new era could start for f1

    with Dietrich Mateschitz gone, the current powers to be should really consider selling AlphaTauriand focus on RBR instead?? Porsche anyone?? as this might be the best way for both F! and Porsche to get onto the grid for 2026

    • @raycodv267

      Why would they sell now that F1 is finally profitable? Besides, Porsche has consistently shown it has no interest in doing any hard work to get onto the grid and/or successful.

    AlphaTauri car is not built let alone designed by Red Bull. What this clearly demonstrates is that aero and suspension engineers have a huge impact on the car performance. This is obvious clearly but these two cars dramatically and clearly illustrate this fundamental fact.
    The Aplha team is clearly not as knowledgable or competent in the new format car as their Red Bull counterparts. Sounds like Aston Martin and Mercedes as well.
