Heath warning: Mick sitting on the right may be strangely disconcerting for regular TPS viewers
It's twisting my brain!
Rampant savantism & OCD triggered like fury here, I'm dizzy and can't stomach watching with Mick on the right? Without Dan it's like a cold day in Dante's L'Inferno, not very normal very weird feels odd strange & this is not usual to say the least - off like a bride's spencer me - can't watch this!
Mick on the right.....? Get an act TPS! You are better than this guys... where.tf is Dan too OCD goes off the richter as I hit the grey X in the top right corner of screen Power Down & close the lid, ensuring not a single skerrick similie or smallest sign of fingerprints are visible in 45-degree angled light sources on the laptop lid for nothing enrages my volcanic apoplectic over-reactions like fingerprints on a smooth shiny surface. F- -king criminal!
So is Mick on the right of screen! Assassins!
OCD
I’ll go get my Heath bar then.
Mick is on the right just like on the D&M Drive!
Wait, some people don't like reliced or aged guitars? Why don't they let everyone know? It seems like it would be easy, especially online. Any time someone mentioned relicing, they could pop right on their keyboard and let the world know their opinion!
Or they could say little to nothing, as you just did.
Best RUclips, guitar related, comment in ages! Haha.
Errrrr no....just no
Well, you see, the online guitar community is renowned for being very respectful and tolerant of other peoples preferences. They would never write a lengthy diatribe about how they think reliced guitars are “stolen valor” or suggest that they’re superior for having put natural wear on their guitars. I’d expect that kind of behavior from the electric keyboard community, but not guitarists. Never!
Jeez at the beginning I thought Dan had shaved his head xD Quite a scare !!
Wow! I'm from Germany and don't understand every word you say. but just listening to you guys is a pleasure .. I work hard to get only a rudimentary sound like this out of the instrument. Thank you so much! I had a great time with you guys.
Nev’s been trying to contact Mick because he wants his gold top LP back. Nev surprises Mick with a knock at the TPS door. :-) This is of course, not factual ;-)
For about 10 years straight I went from playing strats, teles & les Paul's depending on the band I was in &/or tone I was going for to pretty much playing strictly telecasters only for about 5-7 years, Simply Fell in love with the feel & tone of a tele. Just recently I found out my favorite telecaster happens to be a les paul!!!
Excellent
Lol nice
Cant tell you how many of Nev’s blues headlines i went through back in the day, and Micks write ups. Great to finally see a video collaboration with you two. Just off to grab my 335 brb
That’s cool to know. Thanks!
It’s always a pleasure to see Neville, what a nice person and great player! Bravo fellas!
Love that Neville Marten...such a nice sweet man,, his playing shows it as well..very soulful and brilliant!
Mick… You guys have been giving some love to Gibson for a while now and it’s nice to see because you grew up as a Strat player and Dan as a Tele guy. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning and grew up a Gibby player. So to see you guys do these episodes on the 335, LP, P90s etc has been a real treat for me and I’m sure for many other viewers.
Nev and Mick together is great. Good working relationship from Guitarist mag, obviously great friends and easy in each others company. Great vid. Thanks so much chaps.
Great show good to see you back together again , loved Mick on Guitarist Magazine.
I can see your both good mates 👍🏻🎸🎸🎸🎸
This was wonderful to listen to, fantastic playing Guys. Absolutely Brilliant, thank you very much.
Neville is such an awesome guy! I had the pleasure of meeting him, maybe 15-20 years ago at a blues workshop he was running in London. He was so humble and knowledgeable. He came across like he genuinely just wanted to share his knowledge and jam with everyone at the workshop. Class act.
Nev Martin At TPS ?? I'm sure he has stories aplenty for a special show.
I recently took my 2020 les Paul 60s standard out to a outside gig and it literally started sweating, it was around 90° so we were both sweating but I took it back home and instantly started seeing finish cracks around the edges
More Neville please, you two work so well together 👍
This is one of the best guitar reviews I’ve seen, thanks guys
Thanks for sharing. It is great to see the behind the scenes goings on.
I own the blonde 1960 Gibson ES-335: I love that ability to get a great sustain going into a feedback at anytime It play by itself. The CS ES-335 SOUNDS,,, are Unsurpassable! Nice VIDEO!
Just LOVE Nev.. he needs to be on RUclips MORE! Lots more
This is awesome Neville Martian is a fascinating guy. I could listen to his stories all day long
I've been contemplating a new Murphy Lab Gibson. Great show boys...100%.
I love how 3 days later Guitarist is reviewing a 24 fret Charvel Superstrat which sells for under a grand. Rock on!
Neville has great touch, tremendous dynamics in those hands.
Yay!! Neville Martin! Jammed along to many blues headlines tracks.
Really cool, and wow! Those LPs through that MRM 👌
I bought a Yamaha 1978 SA700 a while ago.. Just on a whim. Fell in love immediately. Put in Monty’s PAFs and 50s wiring. TonePro bridge and tailpiece and Grover tuners.. All in cost me £1500…. It’s the best guitar I have ever played. Consequently sold my 4 SGs my R8 and my Tele.. Just for anyone who ain’t got four and a half grand to spare…
I just scored a brand new Epi 335 "Inspired By Gibson" and I'm over the moon! PS I sold a (very nice) Gibson 335 a while back. If you wanna spend the money cool...but you don't have to...You absolutely don't have to spend that much to get a guitar that sounds and plays beautifully. And for investment purposes you really need to find the vintage piece but they ain't good for taking out to play anywhere. ...
Been a fan of Neville for years bought a Les Paul studio gem and jcm 600 after the reviews he did back in the day, and love what he did with Mick bk in the day.
I really enjoyed this video both, thank you.
That black Murphy Lab sounds incredibly musical and ear pleasing. It just has that cut, chirp, that awesome fatness and yet articulation at the same time that you rarely see on such guitars. Incredible workmanship and absolute treasure to hold on to! Only if they were making them in lefty... One can dream though.
Dan looks a bit different here and he’s sitting on the wrong side…
i think he might've shaved a bit...
He broke bad
He doesn't have his hat on.
@@davedavem Ahhhh! That’s it!
You can DRIVE on the wrong side, but you can sit wherever the fuck you want,
I absolutely loved this! Huge thanks to the both of you. 🙏🏼
Very interesting, thanks guys ! ES 335 is my ever favorite guitar. Since 2019, I ve got the ES 235 a rare model not made anymore, and I love it
Still dont know why 235s came and went so quickly.
@@stanislavmigra yes very surprising their marketing plans ...
Most informative guitar episode. Best guest .
Sorry about my former comment about using different amps skewing comparison. I was listening not watching. When I watched this again I noticed you’ve written on the bottom of screen “ both amps”
Brilliant show and fantastic playing! Thanks gents!
I loooooove reliced guitars! The more the better!
I’ve been waiting to get into my local shop to try out 335s & Heritage H-535. They are still doing online only. Echoing Neville, when you spend that kind of money you’ve gotta play it and know it’s the one. Here’s to hoping Eddie’s Guitars in St Louis can safely open soon bc I want one and I’ve saved up. Maybe they’ll have a used Collings I-35 by time I get a chance to compare and purchase.
My 2016 Les Paul has that cracking in the lacquer and I bloody love it! I highly recommend spending literally all the money you have on a USA-made guitar then playing in your attic!
I think the black one sounds amazing very vintage and airy sound and it does have honkiness to it. That guitar you could play in any kind of music.
Around 55mins noticed Nev picking exactly midway between the two pickups and Mick more like back edge of the neck pickup. So much is in the playing approach.
Brilliant, getting the old band back together!
Absolutely Love the Black 335 ....
Happy to confirm that EC’s 335 had nylon saddles. The guitar is now in a glass case at the Hollywood Guitar Center.
P.S. It’s also in much better nick than Mr Murphy’s guitars without any checking or noticeable dings.
I love these comparisons, very interesting. I love aged guitars that's why I love the Nash guitars you can choose what you want : light, heavy aging ... It's more comfortable for me
That black 335 is absolutely gorgeous
Great to have 'the old team' back together again! (Sponsored by Specsavers!)
When comparing Les Pauls I like to play the intro from "All Right Now". It's become my reference for what I like in a les paul and it sounds so great!
I spent many hours woodshedding to Free Live Good stuff 👍
Oddly enough I really enjoy playing that on my 335 and the solos just sound and feel amazing on it. I'm a "Fender guy" overall but the Free stuff is DEFINITELY custom made for Gibsons for SURE. Kossoff was incredible!
The black 335 sounds fuller and warmer than the gold top Lester. Both have a great bite to them.
That gold top is still peerless. Just spectacular.
Nev is a true gent and he had a friendship with the greatest blues rock guitarist that EVER LIVED….MR GARY MOORE!!!!
Really enjoyed this! God, I want a ML Gibson!!! However listening to it all, it’s cured me of my 335 G.A.S for now and instead, I’ll try and be more versatile with my LP. Would love to see more of this on TPS…
Just ordered tyson tones precious and grace for my 335, got rir of the t=types, check out tyson tone pickups this gut is for real...LOVE THEM BOTH THATS BLACK ONE HAS ALOT OF ANGER I LOVE IT!
Using different amps skews the comparison. As does, as mentioned different players, pick attack, etc. But having said that, both sound amazing! Well played guys and thanks for sharing this in depth sharing.
I think they are both running into both amps??
I love that VOS ...really!
Enjoyed the show! Playing my Maybach Lester, pretending it is a Murphy Lab Gibson. Btw I love my Maybach and will not switch it anytime soon.
Cool story
Love the gold top!
Loved to see Neville and Mick together again, hope they do it again
The finishes seen close up look great. They show the wood itself. I think black wins though overall for tone and sustain, and it just looks cool.
Great video. Hi, Mick! Nev, thanks for lending Mick the Lester. Love the tones. For the relic commentary, I bought a recent Vintera Road Worn 60s Strat. It's a nice guitar, but the belt-sander wear on the body is just ridiculous. Tone it waaaaaaay back, Fender. A few dings and some nitro cracks is plenty.
Sweet lord, that gold top looks deliciously marvellous.
What strings are on each Les Paul? Mike Vernon used an array of mics for Eric's solos, the subtle use of reverb on some solos (usually a couple of seconds only) was a concrete stairwell. Plus Eric used non standard string gauges including a banjo string on top E. Pete.
The band is back together, whey!
Burst LP a bit more bottom end that the Gold top. Black 335 slightly brighter less honk than others. Dynamic envelope of the picked notes different from semi-hollow to solid construction, but they’re all the same scale, similar timbers, pickups and wiring, all tune-o-matic bridge so not at all far apart. Different players, different amps and tone settings and there are so many more variables in the mix that comparison becomes harder still. Very cool to watch and listen to and beautiful instruments!👏
So awesome to see you guys together again! Too bad these are mainly for doctors, lawyers, and dentists, (and car salesman nowadays).
I’m a carpenter and I was able to get one. I had been saving for a custom shop 335 for a year or two and Murphy labs dropped right as I had the money. I didn’t even know they were coming out. I got one straight away. It was the most expensive item I’ve ever bought outright like that. Well to be fair, I put a down payment on a car that was higher than the guitar but I still had to finance the rest.
…you guys always do an entertaining intro!
I’ve been asking for Nev and Chris to be featured on TPS since forever
I have a cherry red 335 made in Memphis when they first started making them and man that thing is absolutely glorious through my AC30. I run it with a Mudhoney, TS9, and Wampler Sovereign with a Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere and Boss DD6 and it's so ridiculously powerful. I've also got the Sola Sound MKII Hybrid and managed to score a Boss Tone Bender as well and I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with that.
Please do a tone lounge that pedal show cross over...Richard barrett showing his skills and there rigs would be awesome
So weird just a few days ago researching orange rockerverb 50 I watched a video with Neville and another gent. I don’t think I had seen him before, and now he’s popping up here.
Mick what pick ups are in your gold top I love the bite and it can do that les Paul thing but also has some SSS style too
What a great idea …. Just wondering why you didn’t do it before ?
Lovely 335s as well….
Great one, guys! This certainly hasn't made me lust for a 335 less...
Excellent video. I'd never looked at ES-335s before and only seen 2 people play them (BB King & Justin Hayward). They sound lovely! On the subject of dinging guitars I remember getting my Les Paul. I opened the case, put it against a chair to photograph & it promptly fell over! Ding issue solved. When, however, it comes to relics, I get why people like them, summed up very well in this video. However what irritated me is with heavy relics, the ridiculous cost for so much relicing, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a cheap Gibson or Fender which you can do what you like with? The quality of these guitars today is so high that sound wise, you'd still have a great sounding guitar but without the mark-up anywhere between £3,000-£7,000.
Pedant alert: Keith's Black ES was a 1959 355; Johnny Marr had one too but sold to John Shanks who also has a 1960 factory black 355. I have a '64 factory refin'ed black 345 like Barrie Cadogan; looks and sounds very cool.
1.10.40 Yep, I got a reliced guitar not so much because of the looks but because I didn't want to worry about dinging it.
Of course always great to see Tone Lounge with Nev.. Where's Richard Barrett?... Hopefully both Nev and Richard can make an appearance on TPS.
Gibson glory! Cheers!
The Gibson 335. The Burst killer.
Less weight and much more versatile.
Got to say...the Murphy '59 and '61 dot 335s are beyond delicious.
Black 335 and gold Les Paul sounded best IMO. Great video, chaps.
One of the reasons why vintage PAF humbuckers sound so articulate and airy: they are not potted with wax. That detail almost NEVER gets mentioned. It is the plow that broke the plains with regards to humbuckers. You can use all the unicorn tears and pixie dust, market them as hand-wound (NO pickups are hand wound. They are ALL wound on machines) and if they're not wax potted they will sound significantly different than a potted pickup. Tone is subjective and a high-gain metal player for example would naturally want a potted pickup, but it's very frustrating to watch pickup comparisons where one is potted and one is not and tonal differences are explained entirely by materials or, my favorite, the type of wood. All of those things factor into the sound but potting makes a HUGE difference and is almost never mentioned. Thank you for addressing it here!
I thought the same thing and then I watched several videos where they compare potted to non potted and I heard no difference at all.
@@jdl2180 And you likely won't in a RUclips demo, especially with the gain cranked to 13 on the bridge pickup.
What all did Clapton use the 335 on in Cream? I think of it as the "Crossroads" guitar but I've always wondered if it's confirmed what was the 335 and what was the SG. Also there have been pics of him with a Black Beauty at the time as well. Then literally just the other day I saw someone saying Badge was actually played on a Strat and I had never thought that and Badge is actually my favorite Cream song ever. Anybody have any info on this?
Wasn’t it just that he played it at that festival that made it so famous?
Up with this kind of thing!
Great show and knowledge here! But I did get confused with Mick on the right side😜😂
Really recommend Eastman guitars, incredible guitars and super value. They do some amazing 335 styles that are just full of mojo and tone 👍
I agree. I have a t386. Sounds slightly more chimey than most 335s but is amazing. A gibson 335 is out of my price range but for a 3rd the price the eastman is a steal
Great shout. My latest guitar purchase is a lefty T486. It's fantastic. My mate is a 335 nut, I understand it but if you just want that style to add to the collection the eastmans are hard to beat. The build and finish detail is better than my Les Paul classic.
@@jeffroq yep. I was looking at the 485 but went for a more stripped back look. I tried 3 different 335s at the time for comparison and there was only one out of those 3 I would happily have traded my eastman for. I also prefer the ebony board to rosewood
I’ve got a custom order T59 coming, can’t wait :)
@@Tolbiny you won't be disappointed!
The flubby clean les paul tone at 47:40 is is a great Paradise City tone
What a graet and intersting video. Thank you! What this comparison proves is first bof all that no two guitars - and I mean two guitars of the same brand and model - sound the same. And this is because they are "individuals", made of different pieces of wood etc. I'm sure two Murphy lab 335s will sound different as well. And which one you prefer will always be a matter of personal preference. I like Mick's 335 better because to me (!) it sounds more like Rock'N'Roll. Both 335s are wonderful guitars in their own right.
What I think is tiresome is when people tell us that their XYZ-brand 335s are so much better than a Gibson 335. Although this may be the case, it's completely off the point, since this video is about Gibson guitars.
Great to see Neville here :-)
Absolutely true. The variance in this type of guitar is huge. Almost two decades ago, I played a Heritage 535 at a local shop, and it was glorious. That same shop had a used Gibson 335 that was kind of just okay. I made the foolish determination in my head that one was better than the other. The Heritage sold, and I went on a kick to find more. Turned out that the variation from guitar to guitar on both brands was just very large. That one Heritage was great. I'd say my current 2020 Sixties Cherry Gibson ES-335 is as good as any I've ever played. Just have to play some and find "the one".
Do u think that maybe the scalloped center block in the 1963/64 ish era could potentially be related in theory to how acoustic instrument makers shape, tune & reduce weight to help enhance the resonance & tone of the soundboard/top with the ES 335 & similar being semi acoustic solid body hybrids?
It’s his left hand note strength/ghost noting thing...That’s wrecking your mellon Mick.Your strat strength grip...thing.Cheers! Awesome guitars!
that Goldtop is still the best, I need to find an r7 like it
Great Video guys. Its obligatory that I support my namesake :)
It would have been good to see the guys try the middle ground of both 335 & LP. I always gravitate to a les Paul signature from the early 70s it’s the only guitar I own that is a 335 a Les Paul & a tele wrapped into one guitar. It was interesting when the old tape echo was used I presume it may have been an echoplex which is the best pre amp. I use an old Echoplex at the beginning of my effects chain which is ex John Martyn, with no echo engaged which changes the guitar completely being valve preamped.
Does Nev charge for the ageing added by his jacket buttons?
I always regret not having moaned enough at my dad to lend me the money to buy what looked (strangely at the time) like an early 52 gold top Gibson Les Paul with an unbound, dotted neck (with a headstock like a Melody Maker) from Westside Music for £250 back in the early 70's
...seriously, I think it might have been an early prootype? ...looked nothing like the typical mid 70's Les Paul Deluxes
I genuinely don’t understand why a LP 59 burst goes for way more money than a 59 Es335? 🤷♂️ hands down they sound so much better and are way more versatile. They really are burst killers
Ditto Gold Tops. Well, I know the answer, its as much the iconography of "the burst" as with the actual sound
One of the reasons is because the Les Paul wasn’t a sales success and went out of production for the best part of a decade from 1960. Conversely the ES-335, once introduced, never went out of production at all and as such are less limited than the golden era of Les Pauls (the original sunbursts were in production for significantly less than 3 years).
what pickups are in these they sound great!
I can hear the additional bite and snap from the higher nickel content on the tuners
I wish you have had my Double Gold Murphy Labs to compare while '59 sound different
Neville has a lovely speaking voice, where in the UK is he from?
He spent his early life in Alnwick, Northumberland then moved ‘darn sarf’ from previous interviews with him I understand
@@jonathantumman8347 Ah right I have family from that way, maybe thats it
I could listen to Nev for days at a time give me a trough of chicken and rice mineral water and Nev on TPS and I’m a happy bunny his knowledge is immense and he is a smashing bloke and a great player l know the late great gary moore would agree..
I’ve always thought I was kinda crazy wondering if there was a difference in the horns on the ES
