Thanks for this. Your final comment: Jonny Marr is a genius, is completely correct. The essence of his genius is often his choice of harmony. On first listen, the Electronic song sounds like a nice pop ditty. Listen again and all these gorgeous harmonies are in play. Marr is the greatest British guitar stylist ever - period.
modfather I've been following you for years as your a excellent guitarist BUT on this song it's the first time I've actually seen you struggle, my question to you is ""Is Johnny Mar that good !!!! " I seen the Smiths live in Manchester UK and I thought to myself ""Shut that guy is f':"'':"ing one awesome guitarist '' me personally I think he's one of the greatest ever but is massively underestimated , I even think Hendrix would have dug Johnny.s playing as it's near on impossible to replicate ! even Johnny said in an interview if he hasn't played a certain song for a long time he finds it difficult to work out .....And he wrote it hahaha, but your little lesson has give me a good idea so thanks for that , Johnny Mar is a genius !!
Yeah, I play this much better now than when I made this... I should probably take it down. Glad it did something positive for you. BTW--there's a really good non-Marr version of it online.
I watched the first video and tried to work around it with the chords shown but it was still difficult. This is SO much better and true to what he plays. You're the man. P.S. Have you checked out Johnny's solo album? I think it's excellent.
I put the details in the comments section of the other awesome Electronic single "Get The Message" at this link if anyone is interested: ruclips.net/video/xehETphoRXY/видео.html
Last chord of the chorus doesn't sound quite right (I'm not saying you got it wrong, just that it's not really the original chord). Also, the "equivalent" chord in the intro (the one you did because you find it difficult to play Johnny's chord change) sounds better than the one he's playing. Great video, BTW, thanks for posting this! I'm trying to learn this song, but my favorite guitar part is from the 12" version.
As an aside. It may actually be Mr Sumner who played this. He complained at the time that everyone thought Marr was responsible for all the cool guitar parts in Electronic, whilst he contributed all the synthesised parts, Sumner actually did a lot of the guitar. It is a very Bernard sounding progression too. Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos, I appreciate it.
daavichon Mr Sumner is also a long time admirer of Nile Rodger's guitar style. He once said that his ideal band would sound like Chic crossed with the 'social commentary' lyrics of the Kinks. His more recent guitar parts have been rockier and played on a Gibson SG, but if you listen to older New Order tracks, like State of the Nation for example, there's a very definite Nile influence in his rhythm guitar parts, and he used a Strat, almost exclusively for live work, for quite a long period during the 80's. I could be completely wrong and the guitar on this Electronic track is all Marr's work, but I do remember JM saying that their roles weren't defined like people would've imagined, with BS doing all the programming and JM doing all the guitars. JM even said that Bernard was a far better guitarist than he was given credit for. [I could actually ask someone who knows him really well if I'm correct, but I fear he'd either tell me he couldn't remember or to keep my nose out [he is actually completely approachable and not at all 'aloof', I've just always been far too star struck to engage him in any kind of conversation beyond spluttering out what a massive fan I am, I fear I've looked and sounded like a complete idiot in the past and I've never managed to overcome it in his or the rest of the band's presence, Hooky once sat next to me at a table and I was practically paralysed with fear, which is pretty pathetic when you are approaching middle age, sad but completely true.]
Thanks for the feedback, and the support. IDK, I've tried it both ways, and for me, my mind is so used to knowing the frets from the actual nut that I get confused when I count them from the capo, but yes--that's certainly something I could do going forward. Cheers.
@@modfather1965 Thank you sir. That guitar is beautiful and the tone you got is amazing. Ive been able to play the riff now after about 20min. Hand aches. Thank you.
Glad you found the "William" lesson. Hope it helps. I don't know These Things Take Time yet (would like to learn it...), but I could do one on Handsome Devil. BTW: had another request today to do a lesson for "This night has opened my eyes," which I'll probably also do. Give me a week or so, and they'll be up. Cheers.
That solo Marr does at the 2 minute mark is not that hard b/c there's a lot of single line runs and plucking the same notes really fast. It's more of a "feel" type of solo to learn and not a tab it out & explain note for note type of solo, just like most of Marr's playing.
A public thanks for your posts. I've really enjoyed learning Marr and Smiths songs via your insightful renditions. With regard to Getting Away With It, I wonder if we could indulge you to have a go at the fabulous bridge section he plays in the live versions? I had the pleasure of personally seeing it from about 15 feet away at the Boston MA show and it was amazing--the very essence of Johnny Marr's understated genius.
Lucky you... I would have loved that. I'd have to listen to the bridge and see what I think. If I have any guitar talent, it isn't in lead guitar playing...
modfather1965 it was the concert of a lifetime. I couldn't hear for a day but it was worth it. There are several good live version of GAWI here on YT. The bridge is an arpeggiated chorded section with inner melodic lead lines--classic Marr.
Really nice instruction! Well done - but maybe orient camera a little further round to catch fingering a little better? Just a grateful tip for next time!
@@modfather1965 Its good to see guys like yourself getting on these UK classics! Hopefully didn't offend it was just an observation. This also helped me get started btw, then I went and watched some live stuff for the big riffing sections that are amazing! It was helpful for me bro so thanks!!!!

I agree, man.
Aww awesome i love this song and cover i can never get tired of this awesome tune❤🎼🎙🎸
PET SHOP BOYS GUY????
Neil Tennant you Mean!!!!!
Thanks !!! Been struggling with this for a while- this has really helped
In truth, this vid's a bit disappointing to me. I can do it better now, and there's someone online who does a killer cover of this.
Redo it buddy!!
I should...

thanks for the explanation. really useful. thanks man.
You have a real talent. I wish I could do it. I think it's an American thing, talking so much.
No kidding, your not Johnny Marr

Totally helpful! Thanks so much for making this. (*Great* sound, btw.)

This is interesting. I always thought it was Marr, because it also sounds a bit like Nile Rodgers, who Marr has always admired.

daavichon indeed, I feel it is Marr. His son is called Nile too!
Benard is that good of a guitar player, Johnny Marr wrote it with Neil Tennant and Benard.
This tutorial is awesome. Some polite criticism would be to name the frets in relation to the capo. But wow such a good lesson.

Good guitar tone ! What's your pedals and amp ?
Here, it's just a little Vox Pathfinder amp and a Vox Tonelab multi-effects pedal. I no longer have that, so I can't recall the settings...
Thank you, great lesson! Any chance you could do a handsome devil or these things take time lesson?

Johnny Marr was in The Smiths

I'll watch that.
jrussell4711 actually, i've got to mucking about with it and it flows from what you have started. several great voicings.

Would love to see what you've discovered...
You should try work out the solo parts, that'd be cool
Why is that pick guard crooked?
It's kinda warped, with time I guess, like we'll all be if we're lucky... ;-)
Weird how your casino only has one pickup
It's the rare 230-T model. They didn't make it for very long.
I play guitar myself, and maybe that's how it always looks, but almost hurts to see the finger bending at 5:16 :)
I'm flexible that way with my fingers... I know most people aren't.;-)
modfather1965 Yes, I tried myself, and I sure can't get it to bend that much.
Really nice instruction! Well done - but maybe orient camera a little further round to catch fingering a little better? Just a grateful tip for next time!
Will do... Thanks for stopping by.
chord diagrams be great
Indeed they would... I haven't revisited this for some time now. Is anyone out there offering a tutorial on it?
Then you use your thumb...bye
The reason your struggling to replicate the rhythm is you play with a stiff arm, you need that wrist all loosey goosey bro
True dat... I'm still working on loosening up, five years later.
