I wanted locs and started them myself and I have no issues.Not everyone can afford to pay a stylist $100-200 every 8 weeks🤷🏿♀️. I'm thankful for the helpful how to videos🙌
I hear what your saying about going to a professional. I go once a month . I’ve never interlocked my hair though.
But I will say being able to go to a professional is a luxury everyone can’t afford.

sorry but i don’t like when locticians start talking like professional hair maintenance is mandatory. its not. locs are NOT that complicated. i don’t like this narrative of ‘if you do your hair yourself its going to get damaged at some point for certain’. my mum had locs for 20 years, always did them herself, and her locs were always healthy. same for all my loc’d fam!
i've been doing my locs maintenance for about 3 years and no damage at all, never went to a locticians before.
I had four "professionals" damage my hair before I started believing in myself!
If people knew what I’ve been doing to my locs I’d be arrested
I’m so confused. I see a few thin locs and no new growth. Otherwise her locs look uniform and pretty healthy. What am I missing??
My sister does my interlocking 3 times a year so like every 4-5 months,depending. It’s always a good idea to wait for a lot of growth, until you look like semi-freeforming; at least that’s what I do. Trust me, your locs will be beautiful. I’m 8 months locd and when i started my hair was so short like barely touching my nape, now it’s past my ears! Just trust the process ❤️Alafia.
My hair was not damaged by me. It was damaged by professionals. Now I don’t know what to do.

I agree that our society in this technological age thinks less and follows others far too much. Yet, we all have the capacity to learn. We have education so that we can learn and grow and become who we choose to become. The problems are misinformation, lack of research, and not seeking adequate knowledge when people choose to do things on their own. Some people are just incredibly gifted, talented because they were blessed.
Also thanks for this video! Seeing healthy interlocked locs helped a ton. My hair is so thick and I workout a retwist is useless. My biggest take away from this video is, as always, less is best. No over Manipulation
Thank you for the advice. I will try to be careful. Fortunately or unfortunately I interlock my hair myself. My locks are thick so I don't have to blend them together. I don't go to a hairdresser because the people who I know do hairdressers have gel in the hair and spaces in their scalp and I'm afraid of traction alopecia. Also I'm tender-headed and can't stand the feeling of tightness in my head. That being said I don't interlock in 4 directions which is probably very poor of me. The most I do is two. As soon as it starts to feel a little tight I stop. But mostly I just leave my hair alone. After I saw your videos I stopped using gel and just bought rose water, oils and Dr. Bronners soap. My locks are just under a year old so I didn't detox with dishwashing liquid. I just used the Dr Bronners peppermint soap and really warm water. The water was dirty the first couple washes but cleared up. My hair no longer has a whitish cast to it and seemed to get longer in a couple weeks. I don't relock every time I wash. I would say if you're sensitive to tightness in your scalp you may want to try relocking your hair yourself cause you'll do it to a comfortable state. But also you have to get over the need for perfectly smooth white people type hair in order not to mess your locs up trying to make them perfect. I think many of us still aim to achieve the sleek look even with locks and it isnt realistic and the hair gets damaged in the process.

i am gonna admit, i am obsessed with neatness. i redo my roots every 3-4 weeks. always wanted thin locs, have around 320. wish i watched this video 5 years ago before i started. still love my crown and the fullness of them. thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I have watched this video tonight and it makes me angry, I was following my Sister lock consultant’s advice and now my locs are very thin. I stopped putting product in my locs, as per your videos a couple of months ago. I once had thick locs and was told they were too thick. I was not allowing enough growth between sessions. My saving grace was being healthy besides taking meds for blood pressure. I drink lots of water, take b vitamin complex daily and limit my red meat consumption. I’m saving my money so that I can schedule a consultation and session with your expert hands. Thanks for your helpful videos!

This is the best!!... 🤔 I've been locced for only a year. I like to loc my hair only after I've got an inch or more of new growth. My family hates it🤷🏾♀️😆
The only thing I do is wash weekly but I do make sure to keep my roots loose I personally don’t like the “neat” look I love the frizzy look no combs just water, oil, and clips.

Years ago I watched a video from yannie about interlocking warning about how youtube videos were giving the wrong advice. I used to do a 2 point rotation which thinned my hair. I now use a 3 point rotation but not nsew. I found a diffrent technique. My locs are perfectly cylindrical and much thicker. I use my fingers because the tool makes it too tight.

I just started my locs journey Dec 2019. I do interlock every three or four months and I have my wash once month. I still haven't put product in my locs myself only by my hairdresser.
I’m 9 months into my loc journey and I admit I have a bad habit of retwisting too often alternating between palm rolling and interlocking. I’m obsessed with always having “neat” edges. I will also sit and twist on a loc or two while I’m watching tv, bored, nervous, etc. so I’m thinning at the roots in some spots🙁
I interlock because I workout so much, but do it every 3-4 months by a stylist I trust. I’m only 4.5 months in but am determined to keep healthy locks on top of my head! I will usually wrap my hair up while relaxing watching TV at home as I am a “Loc Toucher” and need to keep my hands out of my hair!!
How many inches of new growth do you recommend before retighting? I know you mentioned that you shouldn't be able to see the scalp but is there a certain length. I know everyone hair grows at different speeds to setting a time frame like 4 to 6 weeks may not be accurate. I watch a lot of yt videos and now I'm like oh. You have definitely enlightened me.

This makes me want to cry!! I had locs for 8 years and I had to comb them out because my hair was so damaged by interlocking!! I miss my locs and I'm trying to grow the hair to start over again. My hair is thin in the front so I'm scared but I want my locs back.

I know u said u don’t post tutorials however I’m just curious how do u know when u r doing it the right way? I started my locs myself. Tbh I don’t trust other people to do my hair. I always hear horror stories. Also I live in Toronto. Cost of living is high. This lady charged like $250 just to START someone’s locs! I was afraid of interlocking. I tried palm rolling/twisting my new growth. It just didn’t work for me. Plus I don’t like using extra products. And I just starting out. My roots are too thick so water was not going to do the trick. Lol. Also, It just hurt! Where as when I tried interlocking I felt it worked for me and it fit my lifestyle. I don’t use the 4 point rotation or whatever it’s called. I do more like a 2 point “rotation”. I try to moisturize my hair before I do it so it’s not on dry hair. Initially when I started it was too often (every 2 months maybe twice I did it like that) but now, I’ve been waiting 3-4 months at least whenever I do it. I try not to do it too tight. I saw ur video about waiting at least 3 months so that’s what I’ve been doing. Tbh I have met been keep track because I prefer the new growth “look”. I don’t like that scalpy look. Thank you, THANK YOU so much for the caution on in too much DIY techniques. Thank you for the detailed photos that confirm my thoughts. My hair for example cannot take too much manipulation. Sure I want a certain level of grooming but not doing the DIY interlocking. I ruined my locks before. New GROWTH is not the enemy to be thinned out as you demonstrated.

I am (was) one interlocking my own hair, plus taking medications, so I'm stuck, you say palm rolling and retwisring is not good either, soooooo, now I just wrap the frizz and keep them separated. Oh, and keep my scalp oiled. You can respond only if you like with any solutions.

Is it harmful to go back in forth with inter locking and twisting? When I started my hair journey I started off twisting at salon. My hair was damaged because of twisting often. Losing my hair in the crown and the back of my head. After you popped up on RUclips I been following you and listening to your advice. My hair is growing back slowly while progress is being made. Yannie can you please tel me what I can do about my hairs that grow away from my locs???? I believe this is why my locs have been thinning. I have plenty of hair at my roots however it just doesn’t grow into the loc 😔

Very informative video! Question how do you avoid getting lumps throughout the loc. Sample my loc will have a lump then no lump then a lump appears to be after an interloc session or two

With my last set I inter loced with a bobby pin 🤣🤣. While I felt I knew what I was doing, I damaged my hair so bad that I joined my locs and freeformed from there. Eventually I cut them off 🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️

Had locs for 13 yrs just cut them off 5 months ago because of doing my own locs to neatly to often was obsess with my locs always looking nice and it cause me to start looking my hair in the top.so had to cut and cry...#regrets

I live in Italy and Unfortunately I can’t afford a loctician and they are none where I live.
After trying to start my locs with comb coils but failed, I then decided to start with two strand twist. Everything was fine until one month later when I had to retwist my hair with palm rolling but it didn’t hold not even for one day so I tried interlocking and this caused my locs to form a strange Y shape at the roots and tight knots between the buds.
Help me is there a way to fix this or I have to start from the beginning?

Imo, if you must DIY, just 2 strand twists your locs as you retwist. If you dont do it too tight or use products other than oil, it should not cause damage. Interlocing isn't DIY-friendly. Its very easy to make it too tight, but its very hard to undo.
This client doesnt have extreme damage yet, but its on the way to that point. Yannie can recognize the early signs.

I never did my own interlocking. I’ve gone to a professional and I feel they did It to tight (not at the root, though) it’s been four months since I got my hair done and I can still feel the knots and the indents in my locks. I need someone to do my hair right. Or I will just have to start over? 😟
I did this mistake a few times when i started interlocking. My locks were so thick tho i started it so it thin a little over the time and it did just like i wanted to BUT, on some big locks i did interlock too tight meaning the root ended up beeing made of two hard twist strands causing a HARD point like really hard tight nod, hopefully i noticed it and stoped doing it but the mistake is done and i have those few "hard points" on few of my dreads does anybody knows if this is gonna end up breaking over time because of the stifness of it. ACCEPTATION IS THE KEY that's what growing locks taught me

Hello Yannie, I just saw your videos and I have been following. I am so far from you, from Nigeria but Please I really need my locs to be healthy 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. Your video has been helping me. All the professionals I go to keep interlocking my locs and I feel its not helping. What do you advice? Thank you so much
The first lady's locs only look like her new growth grew away from her locs in the front. They Just need to be added back to the original locs.
The sister has micro locs so those locs thrive on a different maintenence schedule. They don't need to be tight, but they have to be done often enough to keep the roots and newgrowth, together in each respective lock.
If you wait too long to touch up new growth on micro locks. Y
you can find yourself with a tangled mess in the roots and you can find yourself having to do a lot of repair to your luck
locs because they may have the tendency of thinning out from the new growth, not staying with thee original loc.
Simply put micro locs require a different lock maintenance schedule than traditional locs and that does not make them inherently weak or bad they're just different, but they can thrive just like all other locks can.
If a person has very fine hair, they may want to do their new growth once a month or once every other month. They have to do something or their locs may thin out because of new growth, straying away from the original loc.
I have braidlocs that are about the size of the sister's locs in this video. I tried to go 4-5months without without redoing my new growth and all I ended up with was a tangled mess of locks that in some areas we're thinning out because the new growth wasn't staying incorporated in the original locs. So now when I wash my hair and let it air dry, I feel around my roots to see which one's have new growth and I redo them if they have a 2 fingertip width Of new growth, i've been doing that for over 17 years and I have not lost one loc on my head, not one.
Due to postpartum situations, I've had my hair thin out around the edges, and that all has recovered over time. Layer, due to hormonal changes. I've had different parts on the top of my hair get finer, but as I massage and try different oils I've found that even those areas have gone back to normal. I think it's important to watch what's going on with your health and pay attention to all areas of your scalp. Sometimes, if you have high blood pressure that that can cause the top back of your hair to be thinner. I found out that I had sleep apnea I found that sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure for some women after menopause, and that was the reason for my hair being thinner in certain sections. All that now is in better control now thank God. You have to stay on top of your hair so that you can keep it healthily flowing and growing from your scalp. Blessings family.

Yep I ruined my first set of locs trying to interlock myself and they started getting thinner and harder. 2nd set I just retwist with rose water and oil (:D) when I wash and now they're spongy and soft.

I have low density hair 4c hair. So I made about +-200 twists. I'm hoping by time they will thicken to make my hair more volume.
