I seriously doubt Nintendo invested money for its completion after all these years. My guess is that they will release the leaked rom as the official final version of the game.
I head Miyamoto was salty about Donkey Kong's success but I'd never heard that quote specifically. I'll admit it's nothing groundbreaking but "mediocre" is a little extreme. It's a solid side scrolling platformer with some innovative gameplay mechanics (the barrel sections, the mine carts, riding animals, etc.) I've just never heard people hate on it before. To each his own, I suppose.
About the game prices, I never grew up with an SNES so my games were bought in the last few years and before any news about this. Here were some of the prices of games released on the SNES Classic. Super Mario World - $10 Super Mario Kart - $30 Super Metroid - $60 F-Zero - $20 Zelda: A Link To The Past - $50
This makes me realize how special it is that we got to live in a time when big, bulky cartridges were the norm. Think about it, aside from those 25 years, there won't be any other time ever where that happens. Unless they make cartridges that use mappers that are entire computers or something, but theres no reason to.
The NES Classic debacle basically cooled me to this whole concept. I picked up a nice NES Bluetooth controller and am just going to emulate instead. I already have all of the consoles and flash carts anyway.
For the sake of clarity, StarFox 2 WAS 100% finished back in the 90s, and never released, but the ROM that has been floating around the interwebs is NOT the finished version--it's an earlier prototype. That's why Ian is so excited about it.
If I were to round up this to 30 games, I'd add: - Donkey Kong Country 2 - Chrono Trigger - Super Tennis - Super Bases Loaded 2 - Super Adventure Island - Super Bomberman - Mortal Kombat 2 - Super Soccer - Breath of Fire
It seems Ian has acclimated himself to the outside world rather well after months and months on Pat’s basement. All joking aside, I love that he is back.
There's no way Nintendo will make enough of these to satisfy the actual demand. They'll probably double the amount they made for the NES classic, scalpers will run wild, and they'll cut the cord on the whole thing going in 2018. I'd be shocked if anything other than that scenario happens.
I would have swapped out Kirby's Dream Course for Kirby's Dream Land 3 (highly-underrated installment of the series), added Chrono Trigger and maybe swapped out standard Mario World for the All-Stars/Mario World variant, but otherwise, a stellar lineup.
Helvetica Scenario I had a huge collection of snes games but I've only heard of pilot wings and imo it wasn't a great game. It's just a few mini games that once you know how to do it it's the same each time. You're not going to sink that many hours into it over other games.
I'm pissed that Japan is getting Super Street Fighter II and the West gets Turbo. I liked Super way way more. I was playing it up until it was stolen from my dorm.
I am so glad that I was able to pre-order one of these. I actually pre-ordered mine late, with it being a few days after the announcement. My local GAME store in the UK actually had 2 left in-store, which made me so happy to hear. The bad thing about it though was the price of the deposit, with that being £50, which was their way of stopping what happened with the NES Classic. Still, I now don't care and cannot wait for September. :D
this game list is absolutely insane. this is a must have for any retro fan who just can't put out the money for the carts. and i checked ebay, sold listings for over 500 canadian. daaamn.
After it became clear that the NESCE was just a stopgap, I didn't think this was gonna happen. I'm gonna try to get one, if for no other reason than to support "EarthBound". I can't believe that "Mother 2" isn't on the Japanese version, it's way more popular over there.
I just want this thing for the shell. I'm immediately going to pull out the internals and put a Raspberry Pi in there and put every rom and system I want to. This will be my ultimate retro console!
Really surprised that Pilotwings wasn't included. Makes me worry a bit that Pilotwings 64 won't be on the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition, as it was also a fantastic game.
i preordered mine here in Austria (Europe) i still have my original and everything but i just need that. haha. the only thing that bothers me is why are you people in usa are getting it for 80$ but here we have to pay 99,99€? thats about 100$ you also got the nes classic for 60$ and here i had to pay 69,99€. thats about 70$. yeah well...other than that i am happy that i live in a rather small country so i was able to preorder mine. the more people there are in a country, the more are going to want one...:D ;D as for the Games, i grew up with Donkey Kong Country, i loved it back than so i am actually glad to see it on there. i also wonder why there is no super soccer or super tennis on this. i got my original from my godfather at the age of 4 on launch and these two games have been included. soccer and tennis are big in europe. haha i remember my older brothers (one was 13 and the other one 15 when i got it at the age of 4) they totally lost it. they went like: "how in the world is this little sucker getting a brand new super nintendo :D thank you for your work. all the best for Ian and You.
Indeed they also got a plug and a poster Europe didn't get with the nes so we pay more for less of what is essentially the same thing. Plugs are different languages, aye so charge us same or less not fkn more.
Not a huge SNES-fan, but the killer app missing here is clearly Sunset Riders. Contra III is probably bigger for most people, but I'd pick Sunset Riders over that any day of the week. Kind of surprised that you didn't mention that. It would also have been great to see Super Smash TV and Super Bomberman for multiplayer, but that's just nitpicking considering all the great stuff that's actually on there.
These two were probably not even born when the SNES came out... They can only pretend to understand how we once were when we enjoyed these as brand new systems as a kid.
Would have liked to have seen Sunset Riders, Harvest Moon, and Sim City included in the game list, but I'm not complaining. ...And I always called it "the Super."
Besides not aging very well, the inclusion of NCAA Basketball would just be begging for a lawsuit. While they didn't include actual players, they did use real athlete's stats. For example, it's pretty obvious who the 7'1" "Flick" on the LSU team is in real life.
I love living in eastern europe average pay is probably 2-5 times smaller than US,but those Snes Classic preorders cost like 99.99 euros, how awesome is that......i preordered two.
UK guy here, I've got a couple of weird pronunciation habits.. I never call the NES the 'Nez', I always, always call it the N-E-S, as it should be. However...when it comes to the SNES, whist I don't pronounce it 'Snez', I do for some reason I cannot explain nearly always call it the 'Super Nez' in conversation and unfortunately it's a very old habit that's proving hard to break. I'm trying though, don't hate me :/
NCAA Basketball!!!! I LOVED that game. I was never great at it, but I loved to select Georgetown and just abuse people under the basket with Mourning and Mutombo. :D
Surprised Ian isn't an SNES fan. It literally has almost all of the best games of every single genre of the time other than sports games. It has dozens of the best games in history. I just don't think I know any other hardcore retro gamers who aren't a fan of the SNES.
I don't understand the hate for saying SNES as a word, or NES for the matter. We in the UK always do and the words just roll off the tongue. While you Pat, with no disrespect say Gooey for the GUI. How can you justify saying this and not SNES.
Like how USA gets called the yooosah over here. In the name of fuck you are seriously going to argue about this when the world generally calls it the snes and you don't? Lol
I personally don’t care what people call something. It seems weird to me when people get ANGRY over how someone prefers to say something. This is why I always rolled my eyes over the “GIF vs JIF” bullshit. Who cares. That said,I think the irritation here comes from the fact that, most people in the UK in the 90s DID NOT CALL IS - SNESS (or SNEZ). This seems to be a more recent phenomena, and started as a short hand slang, used by people on platforms like RUclips - and quickly picked up and spread. So i think the reason people are annoyed by it, is because people act like it was “how people used to call it” - when that really wasn’t the case. I know a handful of people in the UK in the 90s who had a SNES at launch, and they were baffled by people saying that it was well known thing in the UK, where supposedly everyone called it that. People have also went back and looked at older material, and there really isn’t anything to indicate that was true. But I also know a close friend of mine who is British, who swears that it’s what he called it in the 90s. So I believe that some people did call it that back then. But I’m pretty sure the recent trend in people calling it, those people were not calling it what they had always called it, it was just a more recent thing. In the end, who gives a fuck. Just say what you want to call it.
Really? I'm surprised! In the U.K., Nintendo Opened pre orders as soon as it was announced and sold out in 32 mins! Scalpers are already selling them on eBay for £300!
While the obvious omission is TMNT IV, I'm surprised their isn't other beat em ups, like Knights of the Round or Final Fight, or other games like DKC2, or Phalanx.
I agree with Pat ..Super Tennis is great!!! I use to destroy the cpu , would be more fun with 2 players. Should of replaced F-Zero with that...Not a big fan of that and theres already Mario Cart on it. And like Ian , I'm not a big fan of DKC either, but its understandably included. The games I'm most excited about is Mario RPG ( can't find a good rom on that), Super Punch-Out(somewhat underrated), The awesome Super Metroid, Kirby's Dream Course, and Super Contra...Would be interesting to see if the infamous snes slow downs are included.
I have always had every NES GENESIS and SNES rom (few 64 too but its weird setting up a non 64 controller unless i find a usb one).... but even though i have all the roms i still wanted a NES Classic and SNES for display purposes and also since theyre official Ninendo products. idc if ppl argue the bootleg emulatiors out there...i would like the official with a set library of all the games i actually care about (vs sifting through 100s of roms that i dont)
Panel de Pon and Tetris Attack have as many differences as Nintendo World Cup and Nekketsu High School Soccer Club on NES. Earthbound is a 200円 game here, maybe most people already have it. Fire Emblem is a little more expensive at 500円, but the series is still going.
It's so nice to hear someone else saying, "Don't call it SNESSS." I hate that. I own all these games, in various forms. These classic editions are not for me. Star Fox 2? I kinda don't like Star Fox. What was that claymation racing game? I want that in HD.
even as a kid (~'94-'96 etc.) we referred to them as the "Nes" and "Snes" first and foremost. sometimes would also call them Nintendo and Super Nintendo, but even that is kind of wrong or confusing given that Nintendo is the name of the company. and I'm sure as hell not gonna say Super Nintendo Entertainment System every time. so you call it Snes.
Amazon UK is making sure only European customers and accounts can order one unit only! California must be price gouging now too on those titles. Never seen those titles listed that high in-store, certainly online though.
Ian is usinghis poker face, on the inside he is really thinking OMG I WILL PRE ORDER 37 OF THEM!!! I am excited AF about this, it will sit nicely next to my NES mini that I had to pay $142 for :/
Are Nintendo going to style this on the Japanese/EU SNES design or the US one? The US design is definitely not as aesthetically pleasing as the SNES we got here in the UK.
Personally I'm a bit unhappy that Chrono Trigger isn't on it. I know it doesn't have huge appeal with "normal" people, but I was hoping this would be the way I'd finally get to play the game legitimately and not through emulation on non-official hardware.
I'll call it a snes or a nes all I want. I'm from the UK and that's what we called it. also a point I'd like to make is that they are calling these mini consoles "Classic Edition" any one else think that over the years we will get other editions of these consoles? Like, I donno, maybe "RPG edition" or "Sport Edition"? I just have this feeling that this is what they will do. maybe make them different colours or give them decals.
What do you think about the Super NES Classic Edition? How many will Nintendo produce?

Any word on a release yet?
Vince Buell September 29
Pat the NES Punk 4
Vince Buell no preorders available GameStop Walmart Best Buy are attempting to curb the scalping that happened with the NES classic
No I mean when preorders go up or any info
Ian seems to be in much better shape today, I'm glad.
Might not always agree with him, doesn't mean I want him to suffer.
+ With all respect to Pat, the podcast gets better when there's two hosts.
Star Fox 2 was finished, the leaked ROM was not the final version.
Ahhhhhhhhh!
Austin Herberger Yeah. It was a near finished beta build.
thats what i heard too...forgot which channel discussed this though..maybe Cinemassacre
I first heard about it from Beta64
I seriously doubt Nintendo invested money for its completion after all these years. My guess is that they will release the leaked rom as the official final version of the game.
I look forward to going around to various game stores and never being able to find this just like the last one.
tfw
Wouldn't play Donkey Kong Country? What????
UpUpBobby I know when I heard that I was like wth?? dkc is the best snes game ever my favorite Nintendo franchise
"Donkey Kong country proves people will settle for mediocre gameplay, if the graphics are good" - shigeru miyamoto
John Squarez lol he was just jealous rare did a way better job then he ever would
I head Miyamoto was salty about Donkey Kong's success but I'd never heard that quote specifically. I'll admit it's nothing groundbreaking but "mediocre" is a little extreme. It's a solid side scrolling platformer with some innovative gameplay mechanics (the barrel sections, the mine carts, riding animals, etc.) I've just never heard people hate on it before. I also think it's WAY overrated...
I'll always call it Super Nintendo
Nick Wallflower It seems only people on the net call it S.N.E.S or SNEZ
That's what I called it. And I think it's the right name.
Super Intendo is what I have always heard and called it growing up, you said it so fast that you skipped that N lol
Super Nintendo Chalmers
@@harrison1735 Gah, I knew someone was going to say that!
Don't forget that Final Fantasy III battles are multiplayer as well. It's got to be about the least known multiplayer title in history.
my friends and I always called it the "Super NES"
That's the only way I say it. I don't even like saying S NES. Super NES just sounds better overall.
I always said Super Nintendo.
Super Nintendo in Italy.
About the game prices, I never grew up with an SNES so my games were bought in the last few years and before any news about this. Here were some of the prices of games released on the SNES Classic.
Super Mario World - $10
Super Mario Kart - $30

Thank you for making a stand on the pronunciation of SNES and NES!
Kirbys Dream Course is honestly one of my top 5 favorite games on the Super Nintendo. Very addicting & a lot of fun to play with friends.
Super Bowling is a really fun SNES game, I would have liked to see that on the SNES Classic.
The NES mini was a cute little novelty item. The SNES mini is a bonafide retro collection in a box.
For the sake of clarity, StarFox 2 WAS 100% finished back in the 90s, and never released, but the ROM that has been floating around the interwebs is NOT the finished version--it's an earlier prototype. That's why Ian is so excited about it.

No zombies ate my neighbors, would've been perfect
I'm surprised Pilotwings was not included
For me it would be DKC 2, DKC 3, mk2, nba jam TE, chrono trigger, turtles in time, final fight 3
This should have included Pilotwings, Axelay, Actraiser, Chrono Trigger, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Pocky & Rocky, and maybe Final Fight 2.
I also liked street fighter alpha 2 for super nintendo
Thank you for mentioning Nes & Snes. I hate when people call it Nez or Snez.

like you're show pat and ian you have great chemistry talking about video games industry love the banter the show just works

"You're getting longer and deeper games" 5:43 - Ian 2017
dude EVERYONE in UK and EU called it the SNES....
talking for "the EU"... NO, we DON´T call it SNES...
interesting. That´s not even worthy to be called trolling... it´s just frustration combined with a whole lot of stupidity...
Yes you do...Claude Fucking Junker himself made me EU official SNES commentator. So Ecke you have an issue with that off you pop to Brussels mate!
I know you will resort to petty insults but whatever. So you do care? as in order to care less you have to care to begin with.
I'm sitting here, honestly trying to recall what we called it. I'm leaning towards "Super Nintendo", but I really don't remember for sure. (EU)
Ah. The SNES. My fav console of all time. Super Castlevania IV is my fav game of all time. +so many more...
Really surprised that Pilotwings wasn't included. Makes me worry a bit that Pilotwings 64 won't be on the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition, as it was also a fantastic game.
Good old Super Soccer. Remember the referee stealing the trophy after the final.
I couldn't get my hands on the Classic mini NES but now Toy's R Us has plenty of the controllers in stock.
i preordered mine here in Austria (Europe) i still have my original and everything but i just need that. haha.
the only thing that bothers me is why are you people in usa are getting it for 80$ but here we have to pay 99,99€? thats about 100$
you also got the nes classic for 60$ and here i had to pay 69,99€. thats about 70$.
yeah well...other than that i am happy that i live in a rather small country so i was able to preorder mine.
the more people there are in a country, the more are going to want one...:D ;D
as for the Games, i grew up with Donkey Kong Country, i loved it back than so i am actually glad to see it on there.
i also wonder why there is no super soccer or super tennis on this. i got my original from my godfather at the age of 4 on launch and these two games have been included. soccer and tennis are big in europe.
haha i remember my older brothers (one was 13 and the other one 15 when i got it at the age of 4) they totally lost it.
they went like: "how in the world is this little sucker getting a brand new super nintendo :D
thank you for your work. all the best for Ian and You.
Indeed they also got a plug and a poster Europe didn't get with the nes so we pay more for less of what is essentially the same thing. Plugs are different languages, aye so charge us same or less not fkn more.
Actually its 113,5$ and 79,5$ so it is quite a lot more.
America number 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Daniel Neumayr In australia it's $100 for nes classic and $120 for snes classic
Snes classic in sweden 149€
No Chrono Trigger is a deal breaker to me. I mean they got the rights to Mario RPG.
That's what I'm saying. And no Turtles in Time
they put in on xbox 360 a couple years ago
PikaLink91 nintendo is in no position to make demands
PikaLink91 No Shaq Fu is a deal breaker for me, am not buying it!
You can always hack it. I did that with the nes mini and I even have chrono trigger running on that console lol
I would call Kirby's Dream Course filler.
i like seeing ian drinking beer again and no heat pad
Not a huge SNES-fan, but the killer app missing here is clearly Sunset Riders. Contra III is probably bigger for most people, but I'd pick Sunset Riders over that any day of the week. Kind of surprised that you didn't mention that. It would also have been great to see Super Smash TV and Super Bomberman for multiplayer, but that's just nitpicking considering all the great stuff that's actually on there.

pupper, They look alot younger then 40
Would have liked to have seen Sunset Riders, Harvest Moon, and Sim City included in the game list, but I'm not complaining.
...And I always called it "the Super."
No NHL '94 or '95? Inexcusable.
There's 2 million but the demand is like 20.
Besides not aging very well, the inclusion of NCAA Basketball would just be begging for a lawsuit. While they didn't include actual players, they did use real athlete's stats. For example, it's pretty obvious who the 7'1" "Flick" on the LSU team is in real life.
surprised I wouldn't have seen gradius 3, un squadron, or pilotwings but I'm splitting hairs here. Solid selection here.
I love living in eastern europe average pay is probably 2-5 times smaller than US,but those Snes Classic preorders cost like 99.99 euros, how awesome is that......i preordered two.

NCAA Basketball!!!! I LOVED that game. I was never great at it, but I loved to select Georgetown and just abuse people under the basket with Mourning and Mutombo. :D
Not complaining here, this selection is still awesome, but I can't believe there is no Chrono Trigger, DKC2 or a beat'em up
Question is, will it be possible to play Secret of Mana with 3 players? Doesn't seem like you'll be able to connect a multitap.
I never said "Snes". Always S-N-E-S or Super Nintendo.
I would always see second controllers for the NES Classic Edition, but never the console itself
I call it the S. Nintedo ES
Absolute madman
The Snintendo
No Gradius, no axelay, no UN Squadron, no Final Fight? :(
Surprised Ian isn't an SNES fan. It literally has almost all of the best games of every single genre of the time other than sports games. It has dozens of the best games in history. I just don't think I know any other hardcore retro gamers who aren't a fan of the SNES.
Five words, Nintendo: Where the fuck is Actraiser?
Will the SNES Classic controller work on the NES Classic?
My friends and I just call the SNES "The Soup"
S'N'Tendo
I don't understand the hate for saying SNES as a word, or NES for the matter. We in the UK always do and the words just roll off the tongue. While you Pat, with no disrespect say Gooey for the GUI. How can you justify saying this and not SNES.
They're just being ignorant Americans. Like how they say Jaguar. It's funny really.
"Gooey" is a widely accepted way to pronouce "GUI." Nintendo themselves have said it's "N-E-S."
then go tell rich of reviewtechusa that it's "mario" and not "marryoh"
Like how USA gets called the yooosah over here. In the name of fuck you are seriously going to argue about this when the world generally calls it the snes and you don't? Lol
I personally don’t care what people call something. It seems weird to me when people get ANGRY over how someone prefers to say something. This is why I always rolled my eyes over the “GIF vs JIF” bullshit. Who cares.

In the end, who gives a fuck. Just say what you want to call it.
I would've loved for Chrono Trigger to be on it, but for a sports game, for me, it would have to be NBA Jam.
Which version is europe getting? if any at all? They had the famicon look... can't get japanese games right?
How many of you guys were able to preorder one? The pre orders sold out so fast, luckily I got one though!
JDH 33 you can't pre order yet in the US
Really? I'm surprised! In the U.K., Nintendo Opened pre orders as soon as it was announced and sold out in 32 mins! Scalpers are already selling them on eBay for £300!
JDH 33 any electronic in the US has to be approved by the FCC. That's why the snes classic and the Xbox one x aren't able to pre order
Never knew that, thanks for the info
While the obvious omission is TMNT IV, I'm surprised their isn't other beat em ups, like Knights of the Round or Final Fight, or other games like DKC2, or Phalanx.
The guy with glasses and long hair is such a nintendo hater!! I love it!! He knows deep inside nintendo is king.
I'm glad I got my Pre-Order sorted for my console can't wait to fire up a snes again
Madden 95 would have also been a good addition.
And tecmo super bowl and NBA live 95 or NBA live 96.
Tetris Attack would have been on the system instead of Kirby's Dream Course if it didn't have the Tetris name.
I agree with Pat ..Super Tennis is great!!! I use to destroy the cpu , would be more fun with 2 players. We just called it "The Super" or just "Super".

no, you call it the SNES if you're British.
The first person I ever heard say it like that was Wood from BeatEmUps.
Or Canadian.
or French
I have always called it the SNES since I was a kid! (during the time when it was a current gen console). Likewise the NES.
Or Finnish.
Panel de Pon and Tetris Attack have as many differences as Nintendo World Cup and Nekketsu High School Soccer Club on NES.
Earthbound is a 200円 game here, maybe most people already have it. Fire Emblem is a little more expensive at 500円, but the series is still going.
It's so nice to hear someone else saying, "Don't call it SNESSS."
I hate that.
I own all these games, in various forms. These classic editions are not for me. Star Fox 2? I kinda don't like Star Fox. What was that claymation racing game? I want that in HD.
Please Nintendo...
Don't screw this up...
They will
I'm glad they didn't include Super Tennis because it's a $5 used game on eBay.
even as a kid (~'94-'96 etc.) we referred to them as the "Nes" and "Snes" first and foremost. sometimes would also call them Nintendo and Super Nintendo, but even that is kind of wrong or confusing given that Nintendo is the name of the company. and I'm sure as hell not gonna say Super Nintendo Entertainment System every time. so you call it Snes.
Australia here, for what that's worth. I'm seeing people point out that EU/UK would also call it Snes.
Amazon UK is making sure only European customers and accounts can order one unit only!
California must be price gouging now too on those titles. Never seen those titles listed that high in-store, certainly online though.
I think calling it a "SNEZ" is a U.K. thing. Here in Canada my friends and I have always called it a Super Nintendo.
I can't believe people are complaining about this. If I get my hands on one I'll die.
There must be a new shipment of these, I bought one today at Best Buy and I bet they had a dozen more. Don't pay scalpers they are out there!
Glad to see you doing good Ian
Super Tennis is on the JP model, Pat.
Well, I am looking forward to it. However, it might be hard to find one.
On an off-topic note, I preferred the 100th Episode/CU Let's Play-style #CUPodcast logo. A bit sad not to see it in the thumbnail.
We'll probably use both - switch back and forth.
THIS FRIDAY, BABY!
No Chrono Trigger and no DKC 2 makes this a very difficult purchase to make for me.
It's a short game, buuuut, have you ever played Xardion for SNES? OMG that game is SOOO good! GREAT music, fun, and graphics!
Oh Super Soccer... I had to check that one out 'cause I wondered what the hell is a "super softer." :D
NHL'94??? Greatest sports title ever.
Got my super nintendo at midnight.
Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for a sports title.
