Lazy Game Reviews Did I spy another coupon that may or may not still work in the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" box? Or was that just a "Feelie" of sort?
I loved this video! It's been pretty neat watching your videos go from fuzzy VHS-looking free-time projects to the professional, polished content you produce today. I've enjoyed them all.
I worked in the warehouse for an online retailer back when these things were all the rage. They were such a pain in the butt to box up for shipping without damaging them. I still have some of our old catalogs and sales flyers, which I use to scare young nerds.
2:50 I worked in a video game store that focused on video games and comics. When we started carrying PC games and CD titles those were a source of constant annoyance. I much preferred consoles like Sega Megadrive's standardised boxes as they're NEAT UND TIDY!
I think that, upon seeing you casually flaunt the System Shock 2 box, I may have felt more jealousy towards you than I have anyone else in my entire life. Congrats.
I worked on MenAreFromMars (the heart shaped one 1:08) early on in my career, if you want some next-level cringe pop the disc in for the FMV clips of actors terribly acting the HELL out of terrible lines.
All of his vids are super cool. I love looking at the stuff my parents and grandparents would have back when these things first came out. I love old stuff
That heart shaped box nirvana reference was one helluva impressive pull! Sorry to comment on such an old post but these types of videos are why your channel is so unique and, in my opinion, just the best. Great combo of humor and interesting old school connections to today’s industry/studio’s. Ok, rambling done bro, sorry bout that, just wanted to tell you I appreciate all the work you do and I think you’ve got an amazingly epic unique personality in the best of ways.
Lazy Game Reviews wow, in a slight state of disbelief that you replied to that lol damn. But no no sir, thank *you* for all the hard work and effort you put into each of your videos, I for one truly appreciate it and I know a bunch of other people do as well. But enough of that, I’ve pestered ya long enough lol I hope you have a good evening man. Thanks again LGR. Oh and I am *definitely* buying some of those sweet, sweet faux wood grain socks. At least in this case I hope it’s faux...That’d be hard to wear if they were real wood grain..lol goodnight man.
Awesome ad-libbed ending! I remember software store owners complaining about those weird boxes because they had to go on a different shelf which prevented some people from seeing them as easily.
Funny how most of these are just the normal version of the game and provide what you could only get in a "Collector's Edition" nowadays. I wish PC games still came in boxes like this, as much as I love Steam.
The H.R. Giger box is awesome, I love it. That subtle taper adds a weird effect when looking at it head-on, in contrast to the raised picture sticking out of it.
I'm actually not that great of a game enthusiast but your style of describing stuff is so unique and fun to listen & watch. It makes me not miss a single vid you make; Keep on the being awesome. Heart shaped box - Nirvana would definitely approve :)
Ooh, one of the coolest would be Infocom's first-run SUSPENDED, which included this creepy 3d "death mask" of your supposed cryogenically preserved body. Sadly, my copy was the boring standard-box re-issue. Great video, as always!
Many years ago, in late 90's we had our Polish game with really original box. I'm talking about "Rezerwowe Psy" (Reserve Dogs). The game was 18+ becouse of many violence and sexual content, but the box didn't show anything. It was just a wodden box, made from non-grinded, rough planks and old nails, and it has only red stamp on front of it with title of the game. :)
My first experience of this was in 1984, when probably many readers were not born yet. Games for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum were sold on cassette, usually just a standard plastic box with a coloured inlay, occasionally in a bigger rectangular box if the game was something ambitious like "Elite". The game "Tau Ceti" had its plastic cassette inside a larger card box which was hexagonal: not a regular hexagon but a 90-45-45 triangle with a bit cut off each corner. It certainly looked interesting on the shelf, but I never got far with the game itself.
Watching your videos brings back a lot of great memories for me. I miss the days of outlandish PC game boxes. Keep doing what you're doing, you glorious bastard.
I miss the days of big box PC games and the weird boxes. I loved those 90's. I miss them. :( I remember Thief and Stonekeep and their weird boxes. That Gabriel Knight was always the strangest to me.. Gone Fishing came in a red plastic tackle box. This REALLY took me back. Im happy and sad. Thanks for the video. :)
+ChimpManZ1264 I loved Lego Island as a kid. I remember trying to make it run on windows XP, or even on 98, and having it do all sorts of silly glitches. Ever hopped off of a moving vehicle?!
For some reason I never expected you to pull out a Final Fantasy game, even knowing 7 and 8 were on PC back in the day (along with most of the rest of the series now) Love seeing one of my favourite youtubers pull out one of my favourite series I didn't expect
Awesome! Day of the Tentacle and Ultrabots also had really far-out boxes (and, in subsequent releases, normal-looking boxes as well). Very rare and collectible.
The 2 most interesting game boxes I can remember is a snoopy game with a box shaped like a dog house and the original army men box that came with one green and one tan plastic army man toy!..:)
Lazy Game Reviews Aaaahhhh Lionel Trains Trans-Con!! I had that game as a kid! A great combination of two things I loved as a kid: Lionel Trains and the Old West! I think that same tin box might be out in my garage somewhere! It was such a fun game! Now I want to see you do a Let's Play of it!
Props to you pronouncing "Giger" correctly :D I had that FFVII box back in the day. Sadly, Nvidia Riva TNT had just become vogue, but had terrible compatibility with OpenGL, as well as console ports like Resident Evil. HARDWARE HISTORY!
In Europe there are some Sega PC Games specially shaped. In the middle you the the jewel case "inside-outside" the box. Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop and Panzer Dragoon of course.
Nice, those were some pretty awesome looking boxes. The only one I had included in the video was Darkseed II. For one not featured, the weirdest box I owned back in the day was probably for Soul Trap.
I remember seeing that wooden 'Oregon Trail' edition at a silent auction at my local library. Sadly, the only big box PC game I own at present is 'Enter the Matrix'; my big outer boxes for 'Scorcher' and 'Morrowind' are in landfills somewhere, and my collection is a little poorer for having lost them.
I used to have the box for Even More Incredible Machine by Sierra and it was definitely unusual - IIRC, it was "hinged" with two parts and had a little cat shaped cutout with a tail on the side. The instructions said to pull the cat's tail and that would make the box open.
I had Darkseed and Gabriel Knight for the Amiga, both were great games with awesome box design, especially Darkseed, the H.R.Geiger artwork drew me to it.
TOASTEngineer Maybe. But that's okay with me. The hourglass shape is now sadly out of fashion, both with game boxes, and with women. :( Where is Marilyn Monroe when we need her? Or Jane Mansfield?
Man, I miss this era of PC games and gaming in general. There was something neat about actually GOING to your local PC store/boutique and browsing all the games. Then that one clerk "Steve" (it was always some variant of Steven") who's really into his job (and very metal for some reason) would be like "Duuuuuude, you should check this one out, come on!" And you'd go look at this new game box they just got in like it was a Rembrandt. Ahhh nostalgia! :)
I always loved the old EA "album cover" boxes ... Starflight, The Bard's Tale, Archon, Seven Cites of Gold. The just had a cool look and they always gave props to the devs.
I like the "Towers of Darkness: Heretic Hexen & Beyond" box. It is shaped like a tower (sort of hexagonal) and has reliefs for the little arched windows on the sides, which show screenshots. And a big opening in the middle, shaped like a window, showing D'sparil or one of his disciples looking out.
Two for you to track down. Burn Cycle had a perfectly normal looking box until you touched it. It was thermal reactive. I have No Mouth and I Must Scream had a mostly normal rectangular shape but then the front was inlaid with a clear window to show off the included mousepad with the games artwork on it. It is to the best of my remembrance the only game to include a mousepad.
X-Car! I played it, but I never saw the box (I think even back then it was fairly obscure). I got a lot of enjoyment from the drag racing sims Bethesda made, where you could create your own engine from scratch with anything from a single cylinder to a V12, and all sorts of parameters from bore and stroke to what fuel it ran on would make a difference in the power output. So much fun to tinker around with and create bizarre engines!
Lazy Game Reviews Well, when looking at the background in your video from 00:00 to 00:43 ... I can just say: man you are complete maniac ... a total nut. 2 thumbs up. That's really cool. BTW there is a Chuck Norris movie, you might enjoy, it's called Octagon. Anyhow, keep up the good work.
I'm surprised you didn't show off the Fallout 3 lunch box, since I've seen that one in the background of your channel before and it definitely qualifies as unusual :) I have a retail copy of Fate that has an interesting box too; it was produced so cheaply that, despite being the same size and shape as a CD case, it's a cardboard sleeve with a folded piece of cardboard and a CD sleeve inside, and that's it. I was both intrigued and mildly put out when I discovered this about it. That doesn't really count as a "big box" release, though.
My favorites have always been the Eidos boxes for Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II. Folding it upward to see that rendered pictures of Lara is just ultra hip.
I rolled in here all ready to yell MARATHON and run away, but the boxes you displayed are actually MUCH weirder. The Bungie Mac Action Sack still might be a candidate, since it comes in a sack.
Infocom's Starcross was first sold in a plastic flying saucer. Since it would roll off the shelf it had to be, very appropriately, hung from the ceiling. Packaging was always a big part of early computer games, because, well, graphics wasn't.
I remember playing the hell out of Spectre VR. I worked at Holiday Inn when it came out, and all the computers in the back offices had the game installed. And after work, we'd sit in the back and play each other in Spectre VR over LAN.
I had Darkseed in its 13 disk glory on my Amiga. Man, what a strange game. Quite a shocking game for the time, and one of the very few point and clicks where you can actually die!. Thanks for the Video, brilliant as always.
"Cyberace" by Cyberdreams also had an unusual but cool-looking box. Also "Albion" and "Archimedean Dynasty" come to my mind, as they also had unusual boxes.
I tell you what, with these references to Robot Wars, have you ever checked out Robot Arena 2? It's not perfect, but it's one of the best games that fill the (somewhat) niche genre of sticking katanas onto toasters and making them fight each other.
Oh, this brings back memories. I remember getting my copy of Star Reach (or Space Federation to some of you) The box came in the shape of a space ship (that oddly enough didn't resemble any of the ships in the game, but oh well) Googling "Star Reach box" found one at auction. Lazy Game Reviews If I find mine I'll send it to you if you'd like. I've already tried to dd the floppies to images but floppy 3 seems to have been corrupted.
I miss big boxes... I always loved my Descent box. It was cool as hell. ...Also I've always wanted that 3d body thing when I saw the demo on some Magic Schoolbus game.
I loved Gabriel Knight! That was the first game that really creeped me out (but I couldn't stop playing). I think my version either came in a collection or it was something my dad brought home from work (there was a lot of "sharing" done at work x_x).
"One day you're on top of the world, and the next you're some schmo working in a box factory" - Krusty the Clown, the Simpsons. Obviously, Clint doesn't mind boxes.
Came for Spectre, left satisfied. After working in a software store, these boxes were annoying to put on shelves. Sometimes they didn't fit, but I suspect that was the point. You couldn't put that Spectre box on it's side like a book because it would easily fall on the floor, so you had to place it on the shelf facing outwards.
A Jackson offset V. Often times known as a Rhoads V, in reference to the guitar virtuoso Randy Rhoads, who played them and had many Jackson models in his name. First thing I thought of when I saw the box.
And yes, *hexagon*, I know ;)
Lazy Game Reviews Ah shit I was gonna make a snarky comment and feel smug for the rest of my day

Final Fantasy by Squaresoft

And the "A" in the Squaresoft logo is a triangle lol.
Lol cool i love final fantasy

I always watched your reviews because you had good production value, but this one is very Lazily done. +1 on living up to your name.
Thank you for pulling out Afterlife! Had that game but its box has long since been destroyed and it was so cool to see it again!

Fun but hard tank game and the box draws attention and is different.

2:42 Oh snap, I think I remember 3D Body Adventure. I saw it at a neighbor's house on his computer in 1995. I thought it looked really cool!
Wow an upload on my birthday! LGR you da real MVP
Nice, those were some pretty awesome looking boxes. The only one I had included in the video was Darkseed II. For one not featured, the weirdest box I owned back in the day was probably for Soul Trap.
Clint, I think a lot of people have told you this but your voice sounds like a professional radio announcer or TV host. Awesome video by the way!
The Armored Fist box reminds me of those wall mounted metal mailboxes. Great video by the way =)

Gabriel Knight is an excellent game, and that's a cool box indeed. Great video Clint, may peace be with you :)
I loved playing 3D Body Adventure... it was bundled on my Grandparent's Packard Bell 486 computer.

The Day of the Tentacle pyramid box was pretty awesome, too!
I'm surprised you didn't show off the Fallout 3 lunch box, since I've seen that one in the background of your channel before and it definitely qualifies as unusual :)
I have a retail copy of Fate that has an interesting box too; it was produced so cheaply that, despite being the same size and shape as a CD case, it's a cardboard sleeve with a folded piece of cardboard and a CD sleeve inside, and that's it. The Spectre VR box looks like an electric guitar. The six "strings" are on the top.
Kinda does huh! Although it makes no sense for the Battlezone game that it is, hehe
No clue why, but yeah it looks like a guitar XD
A Jackson offset V. Often times known as a Rhoads V, in reference to the guitar virtuoso Randy Rhoads, who played them and had many Jackson models in his name. First thing I thought of when I saw the box.
