- A few hours spent filming at Exeter St Davids(plus bashing 50's and a 33!)in Summer 1987 whilst on holiday at nearby Dawlish. Classes featured include 08, 31, 33, 37, 47, and 50, with the highlight having to be two 31's banking a 37 on a coal train up the gradient to Exeter Central!

You were there only just in time. I moved to Exeter a year later, in late spring/early summer 1988 (I’d got a job in Exeter St David’s travel centre) and things were very different by then. I don’t remember anything like as much freight, we only saw class 31s - double headed, no less - on the occasional summer Saturday cross country service. The transfer of the class 50s to the Waterloo service was pretty well complete as by the time I got there the Paddington trains were all in the hands of HSTs. Even Class 33s were few and far between. The Pacers/Skippers had been withdrawn and the branch line traffic was again the domain of first generation DMUs. Many cross country trains were loco hauled but those to the north east were often HSTs.
Hi mr Deltic,I'm a Dawlish lad and can remember this very well,but I also remember the late 60s /early 70s when the western,warship & Hymek ruled the seawall,along with the 45/46s on the motor rail runs . The freight was fantastic back then with westerns on china clay runs,class 47s on mail delivery to Exeter from Plymouth. I wish I could turn the clock back as a railway fan...cause the traffic today is crap ! .. And they call it progress lol ??

This is wonderful. I love the 31s banking the 37 up to Central. I am old enough to remember 20 years earlier, when that kind of train would have a Warship on the front and a Hymek as banker. Oh, to have had a cine camera to record that, but sadly I did not have the money then. Thanks very much for sharing this pure nostalgia.

Magic. Just about had everything there. Nice to see one of the green 50's too.Those were the days. Must have been a nice summer in 87 judging by all the people on the sea wall at Dawlish. All the best.

Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it and that it brought back some memories. I spent a week down here and filmed at Exeter, Dawlish/Langstone Rock, Plymouth, and Saltash - a great holiday, and looking back now some priceless footage.

Summer Saturdays at this time were just magic, there's hardly anything now., but we still have our holidays in Dawlish, they can't take away the Devon sea wall, or Cockwood harbour. Getting used to the IET's now.
Great shots Darren and what superb variety - some lovely audio captures as well especially the 37 + 31s - I did like the livery design of 47s in the the large logo InterCity with the wrap around yellow ends

Wow, this is such a fantastic upload. Great footage! I was 7 when this was filmed and a regular visitor to St Davids with my dad. I remember these days well, including seeing the bankers at work. Thank you!

Yes, happy memories indeed. We took it all for granted at the time, and I personally was still preoccupied with the loss of the hydraulics, which blinded me away from a scene that would eventually disappear altogether!

The train that appears at 1min 20 secs looks like what I called a portion train to or from Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central. The formation of BG, TSO, TSO, BSK, TSO, TSO RMB looks like the Edinburgh portion. The remainder the Glasgow portion. They combined going South at Carstairs and ran via Birmingham to places like Penzance etc.
Class 33 haulage on a Waterloo train was pretty unusual in the Network Southeast era. With a Mk 1 coach in the formation, even more so.

Particularly liked the banking of the coal train up the Southern line. I saw a very similar scene myself in '83 with 45 022 banking a Class 33 on a mineral train up that section. Thanks again!

Thanks Ian. It was a good day to pick to visit there for sure! The large logo livery did suit the 47's, and 50's, 37's, and others of course. The first Inter-City livery didn't last too long before the Swallow version came out of course - i wonder how many coats of paints some of these locos have carried by now!
Hey good video I wasn't even born in 1987 but my god don't it look different there then it is now, freight trains now for Exeter is very rare which is a shame I miss the old style HST's good too see the shunters back there

Thanks very much. It was a great holiday for sure, and there was only the day when I went to Saltash and Plymouth where the weather was poor. Getting 50007 was nice - even better for haulage too :-)
Great video. The railways were a real place of interest back then. Albeit by 87 things were getting a little thinner as the 40s had gone, 25s went that year and 45s the year after. The dreaded ‘Sprinterisation’ was also around the corner!. Either way, fantastic video.
Great footage of unique times. My family lived in Yeovil and used the Area 6 rover ticket to bash down there in the early 80s. Amazing times with some real characters around too!

Thanks. Yes, i guess it had about another 10 years before things really started going downhill, but this was probably near the end of the true loco hauled era.

I have good memories of Exeter... I started trainspotting when I lived new Barnstaple, and this was in 1988-91 when the 50's were very popular.
I did a lot of haulage those days... I have all by six 50's for haulage..... although it was mainly between St Davids and Central! :^D
I've never seen banking though.... the coal trains to Yeovil Junc were much shorter, enough for a 37 to handle alone.
The first 47 was interesting... never seen 13 coaches at Exeter!

Thanks very much for that. Yes, not a lot of freight through Exeter St Davids these days for sure, and very 'plastic' as they say with the DMU's/Voyagers - at least the HST's remain for now. That must have been nice seeing 'Tangmere' there though :-)

Thanks Chris. Yes, a bit different today with very few loco hauled workings through there - i guess the night sleeper with FGW 57 being the only guaranteed regular one.
Lovely footage mate, i'v bought myself a tripod iv got my camara ready, and il be going up Stafford to catch some stuff there and il let you know when i put it up and see what you think?

+Jerry Dowse I wish I could go back to this era too, sadly being so far away trips down here were few and far between - but always good when they happened. I'm tempted to revisit now, but it just wouldn't be anything like the same - never say never though..........
Interesting how the 31s were attached onto the coal train as bankers(helpers). You would not see that now
I presume 50007 would have been the Brighton-Plymouth or Paignton or Penzance or wherever it was to at that time.
Coal train would have been for Exmouth Junction coal depot.

At 7:53 what is the class 47's number? I think it starts with 7
I can't tell I'm afraid, but it wouldn't be a 47/7, possibly a 47/3.
