Agreed, there's plenty of boss fights where Cross is more useful than Holywater. The giant bats that split can be easily killed by throwing an axe or cross at the right time sweeping them all in a couple attacks. You get two characters potentially, so depending who you are rolling with what is the best two subweapons for an area.
The cross is the developer intended way, the axe as you said works really well too and is how most people will take him down the first time as you have to bring the cross in from the previous stage in the two international versions.
I've been waiting for a video such as this one, Castlevania 3 was overshadowed by Super Castlevania purely because of the graphics and level design but in my opinion 3 has more features than Super, actually Super is a downgrade in every way except graphics and the way the whip functions. After playing 3 I expected so much more from Super but if we knew we had to give up everything for graphics we would've said screw that give me Castlevania 4 on the nes instead.
There's tons of ways to tackle bosses in this game, as just using Holy water is not the only answer in Castlevania 3.(Such as Grant can cheese the Doppleganger by kneeling and stabbing him repeatedly. It will toss daggers over his head and miss everytime.) Basically every subweapon besides Daggers has a moment to shine. Depending on your duo, what subweapons pair nicely. If you have Trevor and Grant, Cross and Axe are the preferred set up. Sypha and trevor can go alot of ways, as Sypha can use ice to make all normal enemies trival. This leans toward Trevor using cross or Holy Water to be geared toward boss killing. The lightning orb spell the best overall, but it's too rare for it's own good as it replaces crosses/boomerangs. Alucard only can get stopwatches, so yay....he's basically a dry run toward beating the game solo as Trevor.(He thankfully gets amped up in Sympathy of the night, and becomes a vampiric jedi.) Trevor and Alucard honestly is the worst duo since it takes the most hearts and power ups to return to full power.(Sypha gets back to good with a couple hearts and a spell book, making her bounce back the fastest of the bunch.) These games are about are about momentum(as case with most old school konami games, Contra, Gradius), as long as you maintain the best gear, you can keep running over most enemies and bosses. Once you start dying, you often keep dying till you regain momentum. In Castlevania 1 and 3, you build up double and triple shots by hitting things with your subweapons, so don't be too stingy with your hearts till you get to triple shots. (Both Trevor and Grant get triple shots) You can even build up triple shots hitting candles, so you can power up on the stairs before fighting Dracula.(You have tons of time on the clock, so no reason to rush in.) Holy water and crosses are the easiest to get triple shots with since they hit multiple targets and times. Axes can hit multiple targets but that depends on the layout of the enemies. Daggers only hit one target, basically only take a dagger if you have nothing else. They otherwise can ruin your day spawning when you don't want them to. This one upside to Alucard, you never have worry accidentally picking up an unwanted subweapon. Overall Castlevania 3 is a classic, and I still play thru it from time to time. There's name codes that let you start the quest with characters to spice up replays, so you can have Alucard from the beginning and take him on routes he normally doesn't get to go in the first playthru, as honestly he gets all the nastiest routes. Keep in mind you can't switch characters if you start with one of them. If you need help, you can use the code "Help Me" as your name which gives you 10 lives to start each continue. If you save a password, you will start back up with a fresh 10 lives which makes learning the game a bit more bearable. Start game w/ Alucard OKUDA Start game w/ Grant FUJIMOTO Start game w/ Syfa URATA Start with 10 Lives HELP ME
Simon’s Quest > Castlevania 3 > Castlevania I always found it odd how the stop watch didn’t freeze any of the bosses when Dracula’s power is supposed to be weaker than in the original Castlevania.
I enjoyed Castlevania III but I found it much too challenging at times. I’m sure pro runs are a joy but I’m not sure some of the time-waster sections can be considered good game design by any stretch even in a game where there also great examples of gameplay.
The international version was made ridiculously hard compared to the original. I played both the Japanese and said international version. The Japanese is much more fair.
I remember this was one of the first games my parents bought me. it was extremely difficult and I only made it to the 3rd or 4th level... I never gotten further or ever seen the other playable characters. Oh yeah and those owls were annoying asf. They are worse than the Red Demon from Ghost n Goblins.
Yeah. Seasons 1 and 2 are really good. Season 3 does my boy, Alucard really dirty. So I didn't watch it. Season 4 isn't near as good as 2. So just watch 1 and 2
I dont even bother going for Alucard those fucking levels with the falling blocks no thank you!!! Alucard can stay his ass right where he at.. I always go for Sypha and Dnasty and totally ignore Alucard
One of my favorite Castlevania games with curse of darkness I liked your point but I want to correct you that Castlevania legends is not canon at all and as a Castlevania game fan and familiar with the lore I advise you do not watch the Netflix show it's bad and not faithful to the source material so keep your lore knowledge on the games I love your reviews about the these classic games
Watch the show. It's good stuff. Right around season 3 is when it stops being based on one of the game's stories and starts kinda doing its own thing, but it's still good.
The show was barely based on anything related to the games or lore because the writer is a mentally-ill extremist who would rather put his own views and issues into a show than actually do service to the source material. The fact that it got even less about the lore by season 3 is a testament to how the showrunner, in addition to his scandals and vile behavior, also had ego issues and just felt like bastardizing an established property. They had good art design and animation, and that's it. They're overrated pieces of shit.
No it's not. Where did you get that idea from? It carries directly from this game for Alucard, and picks up right after Rondo of Blood. Alucard plays nothing like he did in the NES game, thankfully. This the beginning of games where someone other than the Belmonts is the main character.
This is my favorite Castlevania I love this game. I beat it as a kid with Grant.
The cross and the axe are much, much better for the final boss that the holy water. Useful against all three forms, especially the last one.

Castlevania III is an amazing game
this game also pushed the nes to its limits my favorite hands down
Simon's Quest wasn't ugly lol
the multipaths was a good idea in this game, i did enjoy it when i played it. nice video
epitome - ee-pit-o-me
Fantastic video, well done.
Imo, Dracula's Curse > Castlevania > Simon's Quest.
Castlevania III is my favorite of the NES titles! Super hard, but I love it. 💜
Fantastic game, awesome game

Agreed. Castlevania iii is excellent
6:55 The holy water may be OP on bosses for you, but for me it added challenge because I’d usually end up accidentally throwing it away from the boss.
castlevania legend is very underrated game!
one of the best castlevanias for the original game boy!
nice video! ❤
Well, to be fair, out of a total three games, it's not exactly hard to be "one of the best" :P
@@19Szabolcs91 i have to agree! 😂😂
@@19Szabolcs91and even then, Belmont's revenge is a lot better
CV3 was definitely groovy.

Best tracks
The Netflix series was great. Season 3 definitely was not a mixed bag that was the best season. 4 was great too, but 3 was excellent.
I want to love this game....but I suck and can't get far enough into it to even say anything about it
You and me both lol
Simon’s Quest > Castlevania 3 > Castlevania
I always found it odd how the stop watch didn’t freeze any of the bosses when Dracula’s power is supposed to be weaker than in the original Castlevania.
Being forced to play the US version is its own curse...
Emulation 💜

Should you play the JP or NA versions for a proper play through
JP is a lot better.
I remember this was one of the first games my parents bought me. it was extremely difficult and I only made it to the 3rd or 4th level... The Netflix shows are awesome. Castlevania Nocturne is based on rondo of blood. The animation is 🔥

the show is trully excelent! but, is the story of alucard, not the belmonts. 😅
The characters act completely different and there’s no Grant.

Symphony of the night is basically a remake of this game

What are you talking about 😂😂😂
