THE MARNER MOVE 🏒

  • Learn Marner's nasty breakaway move he used in the 2021-2022 season to score a beauty shorthanded goal.
To the casual fan it might not have looked like much, but hockey players know how difficult that edge work is to pull off at top speed. The mohawk "skip step" Marner used not only helped him protect the puck from the defender, but it also seemed to freeze the goalie allowing him to fire in a backhand goal.
Steve shows us a number of edge work warm-up drills we can use to help us get the edge work needed to pull it off, then breaks down the Marner breakaway move at the end of the video.

Steve's edge work is elite. Always continually pushing out excellent + free content. The "mohawk" is so underrated and kids need to realize it teaches about the use of inside and outside edge work. And if you want to be more relevant; watch McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby if you ever want to see how important inside/outside edge work translates into elite skating in the NHL

I used these moves back in the day high school 2002. When I saw Cale Makar use it top speed at the Pepsi center it put a smile on my face. A couple weeks ago he went end to end with a little mohawk action. Makar the offensive minded Dman is fun to watch.

Great move. Going straight into my practice book. Kids are going to love this move. Add a clean deke to the right at the beginning of the move to move the defender's stick to the right side will create lots of room to go around. I like it. Just need to practice a bit before I show the kids. Great stuff as always!

It's crazy I was doing this move when I was about 13 years old . I'm 40 now..I played as far as Junior Hockey ..tremendously heart and talent ..just had wild side of me that got me in a lot trouble..not a day that goes by that I don't live with some regret. But hey, I'm alive, I have 4 amazing boys and a wife.
