*SEE ME SPEAK JAPANESE IN PERSON*
WEEB Speaks PERFECT Japanese at Manga Shop: ruclips.net/video/CpTihMuZiaU/видео.html
*NO SUBTITLE VERSION OF THIS VIDEO*
You can find the highly requested "no subtitles" version of this video here: ruclips.net/video/bjtUw5zA804/видео.html
*WHY I DON'T TALK THAT MUCH IN THE VIDEO*
Originally, I didn't think I would actually end up using this footage. As it was my very first time on VRChat, my main intention was simply to scope things out and get ideas for how I wanted to make a video. I pretty much only turned on the camera to get a feel for what filming myself playing would be like. Because of this, I wasn't really making an effort to speak a lot. But, looking back on the footage afterward, I realized that there was a lot of good content and I didn't want to throw it all out.... So I went ahead and turned it into a video, and tried to compensate for the small amount that I spoke by filming the intro to the video in Japanese. If I make another one of these in the future, I'll definitely make sure to speak more in the video.

You don't need to justify yourself. Get yourself comfortable with Vrchat and build yourself a small circle of friends first. It will be a lot easier to talk then.
There's this Japanese guy who is constantly on vrc and trys to teach people Japanese. He made a decently sized community of students who are learning Japanese together on vrc. His name is Skechobi and he has a channel on Twitch.
If you want to find likeminded people, I'd recommend you to check him out.

It definitely makes sense why you didn't talk! It's just that the title was a *little* misleading and set up the expectation that you would. Though I can't say I'd be mad if it got more people learning about MIA, lol. I liked the video nonetheless, though!

Yes Japan has still has a stong but mainly casual level of a relationship with the UK. I know this feeling. I often go out with my japanese friends and don't say a word when they talk about certain subjects. It might be because I am not familiar with that subject or my personality changes when I speak japanese or I am afraid of making mistakes when speaking (this wouldn't be the case if the conversee was non native). But one thing that is true is that you will always find me talking when the subject is my thing.

    • @jahayrac8636
      @jahayrac8636 4 года назад +123

Lol I totally noticed that too! Like dude you cut out all the talking you actually did when you got your tutorial (doh!). 😅
Buuut to his defense that main chat room is where I imagine the talking happening and was probably too chaotic to easily hear a convesation with Matt. I'm sure it was a pain to edit to actually get conversations as well. Once the adventure started, everyone else was tripping balls because they're probably using an actual headset and being on those rides were a mind trip amongst other things. (someone mentioned feeling nauseous) 😶
Also consider the time difference. If you noticed one guy says that he's thinking about drinking at 3 in the *Afternoon* (there's still daylight) Matt is based in the US, and if he's anywhere along the eastern/central timezone that makes it already 1-2 am. That man's brain works so hard as is lol I'm impressed he's up at that hour. 😄
That said, the gems of the video occured in the beginning with finding someone who's willing help. The fact that there are even people cool enough to do that is awesome and makes VR Chat a fantastic option to practice speaking. Heck it was kind of a tutorial for us too! I totally appreciated listening to the girl/lady who struggled speakin English because I'm pretty sure that would be my equivalent when speaking Japanese. (maybe not totally but dang near close lol) Also, it's nice to see that you'd be able to go along for the ride and just listen to how others interact. Not for nothing, but being attentive and responding 'simply' (相槌 [あいづち]) in Japanese culture is just as important, maybe even more so.
I definitely would love to see more in the future ^_^ And if he actually has a meaninful conversation that would surely be a bonus considering the circumstances 😁

This is actually an incredible way to get fluent! I learned basic English in school (I grew up in Poland), and when I was around 14 I started playing Second Life where I'd chat to lots of people, which eventually included voice chat, and it helped push me to a level where I spent my last year of high school not really participating in English class because it was no longer challenging (I suppose that's the downside, haha). I wrote my undergrad dissertation on this (in English, at a British university - thanks Second Life) and I'm a huge advocate of learning languages through online games. I can't wait for my Japanese to get to a conversational level so I can do this!

Quizlet is basically just virtual flashcards, so you would have to keep track of everything on your own. Anki also has a multitude of add-ons made by fans as well as the option to download card decks from the internet, similar to quizlet. It also allows you to sync your cards and other data between devices, including ios, android, and PC. The only downside would be that the ios app costs $25. Matt, someone else mentioned that you might want to make the subtitles optional - I would say the same thing (even though I don't speak Japanese at all), but also I actually found them hard to read. The RUclips captions option is pretty quick (compared to creating the subs in your video editor) and it puts black boxes behind all the text so you can read it clearly no matter what's on screen. That is just a suggestion of mine... from one humble language learner to another... wait, you are more like the Grand Master of LL, but still...

But I think this is great. Other's have added useful ideas for the next one (if you do it again) but what I really appreciated was the editing that you did on this video. Like overlaying the English directions for the billboards and adding video of some of the things that people outside of Japan or people who are not familiar with the culture would gloss over if they heard it in conversation. Like the comedian or the meaning behind "praying" for luck in the game. I imagine I could totally have been thrown off by that especially with how weird the world was already. Me, 15 minutes ago: Okay this title sounds a bit too extra flexing for a JP native like me not to go full nitpicking mode even though I'm fully aware Matt's Japanese is quite impressive
I tell you what, I find his speech easier to hear as advanced second language speakers like him typically enunciate words very clearly whilst I ended up reading the subs to better understand what the hell was going on later in the video. That's because for one thing the audio quality was tad shaky and folks were slurring words a bit, and for another I realised actually how much information we infer from (conventional-looking) visual cues when talking to IRL people whereas in this batshit VR world it took a while to get the hang of it.
It was really something watching all these weird-ass shenanigans taking place with your spaced-out sleepy face next to it (no complaint at all). It was trippy in its narrower sense but this kind of shit is my jam so I feel like trying this VRChat stuff myself. This was a cool video, but considering the title, I was expecting more of you actually speaking.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the video, and you not talking wasn't a problem, but because of the title of the video, I expected more footage of you talking. Though, I can't say I'd be mad if the title (albeit, a little clickbaity) caused more people to find out about MIA.

This was so much fun to watch. It is awesome to see how far you’ve come with your Japanese ^_^ I commend you! Slowly but surely I am also improving. I would love to see more content like this in the future and potentially have to chance to meet you in VRChat someday. Take care!
