100th video special: DSNY

- For my 100th video, and 4-year channel anniversary,I wanted to give you guys somehing a little more special.
This is footage of one of the thousands of DSNY Heil 5000s, working in East Manhattan operated by a very freindly crew. As far as I know, this is the only DSNY truck filmed in action by a garbage truck-dedicated RUclipsr. I would've gotten a LOT more video if I had the chance, but I got a really bad flu and could barely walk to the bathroom. Oh well. Anyways, expect a lot more East Coast video from me, and please comment whatever goes through your head while you watch. Enjoy!

Great Footage!!! Ive lived & grew up in NY my whole entire life before I moved & always wanted to see some serious action frm the DSNY trucks on RUclips! Definately Great Footage! I remember seeing some of the ex-DSNY Heil Formula 5000 RELs in action a decade ago when they were owned by a private carting company serving a town in LINY where I lived, (before I herd about RUclips;) But havent had the chance to see any of the new Durapack 5000 RELs before I moved.

Some of the bags from the other side of the street were large enough to put a body in! DANG! What were they? Like 97 gallon trash bags or 100 gallon?
I'm not sure. I've been told they're for large trash compactors for large apartments. Some of the people here call them "sausage bags".

I did 23 years in DSNY, wish I made it to 25 but due to a douchebag taxi driver who found it necessary to fly by us and hit me because he was in a hurry, I lost it all. Miss this job a lot. Best job in the world.

Yeah im pretty sure this is one of the 2 Trash-truck dedicated youtuber DSNY vids out there (FormerWMdriver did a tour of a DSNY heil in the scrap yard).

You only pick up 13 ton all day here in Los Angeles Ca I do three loads at 13 tons in 12 hours.

Yup that's how NYC does it! All the trash goes in big piles of black bags.
No it doesn't! The trash is separated into general garbage (what you see here), metal & plastics, and paper goods which is collected by 2 separate trucks on recycling day

Around what time was this picked up so I know when I go up there.

In some parts of the U.S. I've seen that the truck has a mechanic arm that picks trash containers instead of bags. So no workers are necessary, just the truck driver.
Why don't they do it that way in New York?
Hr Gwea There isn’t room for the special bins required and the arms on those trucks would damage parked cars in tight spaces.

I probably won't be filming New York's strongest for a while. I do have some other rear load garbage truck videos from very recently. Maybe I'll be able to go back someday.

It would be but most NYC apartment buildings don't have a place for a set of dumpsters.

Some large buildings do, some places even have self packing rolloffs. The only thing they don't have are side loading trucks.

BAM HAMMER well, let’s look at their color options. White bags are always small and kitchen-can sized, not good for holding large amounts of trash. Clear bags are for recycling, and anything else is hard to find.

This looks like residential apartment garbage, as you can see the double tied "sausage" casing bags from the compactors. My guess is you filmed this somewhere around mid-town and central park.

I thought NYC had garbage carts. Using carts would make things a little easier on the workers.
25mfd wouldn't that be nice. Most buildings don't have room. A lot actually use regular manual bins for recycle and they have standard issue 25 gallon carts for organics. I think they could work pretty well with 95 and 65 gallon carts and a double tipper setup on these Heil 5000 rear loaders.
trashmonster26 I think they should give the carts a try. There are way more pluses for using them than minuses for sure. Starting with worker safety. I wonder how many DSNY workers are on duty disability? I wonder what is the MOST reported injury amongst them? (i'd bet six ways to sunday it's back injuries)This alone is worth getting the carts. Wonder how much does NYC pay out in workers comp claims in a average year? Like I said reducing this problem alone is worth the investment.
You still haven't come up with where they are to be stored.
Dan Rossell lots of places in Brooklyn have room for 32 gallon bins that the guys lift over the gates. If the DSNY could get people to put their carts out on the collection days it might work in a few sections of a few districts (and most of Staten Island) but it would be impossible nationwide.
Dan Rossell Put the carts right where the they lay the trashbags. If they have room to lay trashbags right on the ground they have room for the trash carts.

for some reason a lot of DSNY doesn't want to be filmed. this was the third crew I found because one didn't want to be filmed and one said I could film but didn't want to be on RUclips.
Probably the answer to that is they've been in trouble or are in trouble with the law.
I doubt it. They're city employees, it's not like they're working for the mob collecting trash.
i didnt care about being filmed but i focus on traffic ,the public & my partner being safe to make it home. im a 28yr vet i dont get in trouble son
