I wish the man that taught me to tie was still alive to enjoy your expertise. He tied a lot like you and though he could be rather cranky at times, knew talent when he saw it. I miss him dearly and watching your work brings back many fond memories of a men that took the time to invite a novice to his house and spend the time teaching him his craft. You are doing much the same with a medium that was never dreamed of back then and I am extremely grateful for that.
My favourite sea trout fly. I tie it with a palmered grizzle hackle on single hooks from 2 to 10. I have also tried the Welsh way of tying it, with an orange butt but find the white equally as effective. I do like my sea trout flies (on big singles) to have a "buzz" about them, hence the palmered hackle. Beautiful fly, beautifully tied, as usual!!
Hello Davie, Haslam has been a useful fly on my regular Welsh Dee for a few years, takes seatrout as well.Nice to be using another traditional salmon pattern.Best wishes safe wading for 2021...when we can🐝
A sweet salmon fly Davie although, as always, not of much use to me for fishing but I do try a few of them just to look at and practice the method. Thanks for another nice tie.
Very nice Davie! I don't do salmon but I will tie up a couple of these for bass just to practice the techniques. You "tidy up" after tying in a material but its not just to make it "neat" - don't know if people realize that you are preparing the foundation for the next material. Thought you might want to point out that preparing the foundation is (IMHO) as important as selecting, preparing, positioning and tying in the material itself. Found that my flies really improved when I started paying close attention to preparing the base for the next material. ATB! Hank
Hi Tom, By running the thread through the wax once or twice it will help strengthen and give your thread more grip holding the materials far better..I use Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax and in the link I have attached will show you how I prepare it for use.....ruclips.net/video/IN4N92G14Xg/видео.html All the very best Davie..
Great salmon fly mate. It’s great for another super looking fly. Was just wondering if you can do it on a single hook and how small you can go? Thanks for sharing with with us again my friend. Best Regards, Ken
Hi Ken, You could easily tye this down to a trout size fly as it's very similar to the silver invicta and I tye them down to a size 14..I'm glad you liked the video.. All the very best Davie
Hi davie. I’ve got a copy of Mike Harding’s North Country Flies. Could you please demonstrate how you would tie either his Ribble Rouser or Pendle Witch patterns? I can’t figure it out just from the illustration. Thanks Nick
Hi Nick, I've not tyed any of Mike's flies and unfortunately I don't have a copy of his book though I'll do a search on the internet and see if I can find something... All the very best Davie...
My name is Bolat I like to knit flies and fishing. I am very interested in techniques and methods of working with different materials, their combination and combinations, special devices and tools. We ask you to make reviews on the topics.
Hello Mr McPhail, I wanted to thank you for all of the fantastic flies (particularly the salmon patterns) that you tie. I will be taking my first ever Atlantic Salmon trip in Scotland for a week in late June/early July and your videos have been a great help as I put together a repertoire of flies to use. On another front, though, I have found it extremely difficult to find affordable salmon fishing on the North Coast rivers like the Halladale, Naver, Dionard, Borgie etc. Do you have any recommendations for rivers and/or beats with decent summer grilse/salmon runs where fishing could be had on a sixteen year old's budget? Thanks again for the fantastic tying videos!
Hi Trouthom, Most rivers will have a club water and as well that sell day tickets so if you ask at the local shop or even go down the water someone would be able to help you.. I live more than 6 hours drive from these waters so I don't know them personally...It may also be worthwhile looking on the fishpal website as they do have a lot of info on waters here in Scotland...www.fishpal.com/FishingInformation/FindingFishing.asp I hope you have a great trip and that you get some really good fishing.. All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail thanks for the advice! Do you find that club water is usually bookable once you get to the river, or should I look to book in advance? Sorry for all the questions - all the fishing is free here in the US, so I am trying to figure it all out!
Hola Davie, tengo una pregunta para ti, cual es el sentido de aplicar cera de abejas al hilo en determinados momentos? Ayuda a que fije mejor el hilo? Espero tu respuesta.-

Awesome flies, and I could listen to that guitar and your voice all day. Peace in a frantic world.
Cheers for another great upload.

Hello Davie, I'm from East Kazakhstan, please show the flies on the doubles located anchor. In our places grayling, lenok and taimen . Doubles catchy.
I'm kinda new to tying and was curious as to why you add wax occasionally to your thread. I haven't seen that in other videos.
