    In the old days of pot fishing, that fly was my favourite top dropper night fly. A size six black and silver on the point and a size 8 brown turkey on the dropper, with or without maggots. Ahhh the memories. River Annan, Liddle, Border Esk.. I'm breaking out the malt tonight. Loved it Davie.

    Nice classic, popular in Norway too. I just love to watch you tie, Davie. Makes me relax, it's soothing - and I just know it's gonna be a perfect fly - every time :) Thank you sir!

    Beautiful pattern Davie. The superglue followed by varnish for heads is brilliant, gives such a nice finish pal

    Hi Davie, one of my favourites was the woodcock and mixed, tippets for the tail and yellow and red for the body ribbed with gold, ginger hackle and woodcock secondaries for the wings. I’ve taken a few Loch Leven trout with that fly 👍. Thanks for sharing your video. Jimf

    Beautiful tie.I buy full game hen skins from a farmer mainly for the neck hackles, once I learn down and across I can use the wings also. I've fallen in love with your Hardy's Favorite and now tie a wingless that I can't wait to sore lip the Brookies with.

      Hi George,
      I bought these feathers many years ago from a company called Cookshill Tackle when I was at the British fly fair in 2003. They were sold as hen quills though if you are looking for something close and you have any Golden Pheasant skins then look at the wings as they are very good as well and at times have the same markings..I'm glad you liked it...
      All the very best Davie..

    I do appreciate that scruffy flies catch fish. Maybe even more fish than exceptionally tied beauties like this. I am, however, a bit (🤔) OCD and from that viewpoint I love this pattern. Your attention to detail Davie is second to none. Add that to your filming technique and we can’t lose. Thank you for yet ‘another’ that I will have to try to emulate..... 😬

      El Duderoony
      Perfectly put. As excellent as Davie is. He somehow doesn’t put me off but I feel encouraged to tie better. Thanks.

      My flies are in the scruffy category unfortunately.

    • @elduderoony8171
      @elduderoony8171 6 лет назад +2

      lol Chris! Me too for the present. But I aim to keep trying to get the finer detailed methods working for me. I’m 66 now so I know I’ll never be an artist at this but I do like to try my hand at some of the ‘more difficult ‘ flies just to test my abilities.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Robin Watts,
      I'm glad you liked the fly, I bought the feather from Cookshill Tackle a few years ago when I was at a show, these feathers come from domestic hens so they can vary is colour...When I see them for sale I always look through them as they do make great wings...

      Hi Mike,
      I'm using a pair of 4 inch razor scissor which I bought off Ebay. They are ok but the metal could be a tad better as they are not as good as the Loon version which I may buy after the ones I have are blunt..I'm glad you enjoyed the video..

    Really nice Davie. I am having trouble finding matched wing in that color. You mentioned chicken, I have found turkey but to thick. Short of finding a farm, what fly shop carries good wings like these for traditional wets? ATB.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 лет назад

      Hi Larry,
      You can get good quills very similar to the ones I used in this fly from a Golden Pheasant as I have used them before many times..I bought these feathers many years ago from a company called Cookshill Tackle when I was at the British fly fair in 2003..If you are going to use Turkey feathers the small feathers from the tail are excellent as I've used them many times..

      Davie McPhail Hi Davie, thanks for pushing me in the right direction for classic wet wing material. I have that on my list for Cookshill. For those that may not be aware Steve Cooper of Cookshill has absolute top notch materials based on my previous experience. Awesome tying Davie thanks as always!!

    What the dubbing do you use? Which company manufacturer these?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Евгений Боровин,
      I used seals fur on the body of this fly, there's a few companies here in the UK that sell this, I also over dye and mix them to get the colour I want...I've bought dubbing from many places over the years though if you can find a shop that stocks Veniard materials then I'm sure they would be able to help you..I'm glad you enjoyed the video...
