great content, i have to say your still an interesting teacher. Always loved your jazz style class at 5 towns, ( while school was in Seaford ). Again, i find my self a " student " Stay well, Paul M.
I love harmony on the instrument, these triads ( in case of E minor) that can become many chords by replacing the bass. But it seems to me that you´re adressing something else, beyond that. So, that´d be exactly what? the same finger grip, when placed on different set of strings, represents something else? what do you mean by sonic shapes? thank you . by the way, the video is so good to watch, you´re very gentle teacher.
Sorry for the long delay in answering your question. Remember the bass defines the name of the chord ......that is why a good bass player is so valuable. Make sure you start spelling the complete group of triads (12 Major, 12 minor, 12 augmented, 12 diminished-- and don't forget the enharmonic chords ( Cb =B)( F#=Gb) (C#=Db). a keyboard will help you see and hear the chord construction easier. Because of the tuning of the guitar in rising P4ths which is interrupted by a M3 between the G and B strings the same finger design will give different names on different grupings of three strings. This memorization of chord spelling is the secret to understanding much of music theory. Find an instructor that has an organized method to instruct/guide you through this. Anyone who says you can learn this in two lessons is fooling around.....every musician ha sdone this study and it takes about 10 weeks of hard work to truly understand this study. I use the descriptive word "Sonic Shapes" or Finger Designs" instead of grips as proper left hand technic is not "gripping" -the words we use are important. To quote the poet William Stafford " The signals we give-yes or no, or maybe -should be clear: the darkness around us is deep"
