    Groningen is a kind of hidden gem for tourists from the USA. Mostly they visit other places in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans etc etc), so I am a kind of suprised to see this on youtube. You're right about the atmosphere, the people from Groningen are (mostly) relaxed and down to earth. They are proud of their city but don't have the 'big city' attitude, so even the people from the province see it as 'their' city.

    19:30 It's not really the same tho. "Holland" are the 2 provinces of North and South Holland. "The Netherlands" is the nation of the Netherlands.
    It's like refering to the USA as Dakota.

    That big church?? That is the pride of Groningen, it is called the Martinitoren (Martinitower). In Groninger language (Grunnegs) we call it d'Olle Grieze (The Old Grey One) and they started building it in 1469. In 1554 they finally finished it, after some troubles with weather, fire, plague and other stuff. Since 1798 it isnt a church anymore but was used since 1798 till 1921 as a post for fire and war because from the top you could see anything around Groningen.

    Yeah it´s common to say Holland as so to say "pars pro toto" (= latin meaning "part for the whole") for the Netherlands although Holland is just one small region respectively a former small but later in history immense influecial countship which also will become a kingship for a small period of time as well and is located directly on the Netherland´s sea shore ...but in Netherland´s history the whole country was always divided respectively a playball for medi-eval european politics respectively a apple of discord between France and the Holy Roman Empire whereat the rivalry between Burgundy and France played a huge role as well..

    • @Foxglove963
      @Foxglove963 5 лет назад

      michael Grabner. Cripey, "the whole country was always divided". The whole of Europe was divided ! Even so, the Seven United Provinces was a hugely succesful enterprise, uniting Holland and Belgium, until the invasion of a revolutionary army from France aborted it.

      Although you are absolutely right, we can't expect every foreigner to understand this. Especially since a lot of Dutch people make the same mistake when talking about The Netherlands when abroad. Look at, for example, Nikkietutorials, who constantly calls NL 'Holland' on her socials.

      @@thomasveen7317 In informele taal wordt vaak 'Holland' gebruikt, zeker in internationale context. Maar ik geloof niet dat 'Holland' de 2e naam van 'Nederland' is. Het is meer zoals wij de Verenigde Staten van Amerika aanduiden als Amerika, terwijl 'Amerika' veel meer is dan de VS alleen. Het is feitelijk incorrect, maar wordt wel gebruikt.

    • @jarasimonson4040
      @jarasimonson4040 5 лет назад

      @@thomasveen7317 totally. In real life everybody uses both words. I tend to say NL. When once I used Holland (since some people from abroad don't know the word NL) I was corrected by an American. It's always the conversation. And started by some Dutch people not liking the word Holland. And being Dutch I can sort of relate because that word has sort of a nationalistic connotation since it's mainly used by people supporting the soccer team screaming out loud Holland! But I'm over it. It's Holland or the Netherlands. The words indeed are interchangeable. 💚 (the story about the 2 provences is true but not really, since Holland really also is used as a name for the whole country)

    holland and the netherlands arent the same place, holland is a province within the netherlands (north- and south holland), so many dutch ppl dont know this, its kinda ridicilous to be honest, back in the day we were holland but nowadays its the netherlands - our nationalities is NEDERLANDS, not HOLLANDS, felt the need to correct u sorry other than that good vid

      Actually most adult Dutch over the age of 35-40 know this is nonsense, the problem is with triggered millennials that do not seem to know that Holland can and has been colloquially used in official capacity for ages. Only this year due to new legislation it is no longer allowed for certain formal usage.

    Although it's a common mistake; Holland and The Netherlands can most definitely not be used interchangeably. As it's most definitely not the same place. Holland refers to what was once the single province of, you guessed it, Holland. Now it's divided into the provinces or North- And South-Holland. It's like suggesting we call Germany North Rhine-Westphalia because it's the wealthiest and most populous state.

    Hi, you said Holland and The Netherlands are the same.. but that is not quite correct. The Netherlands is the name of our country, but Holland is the name of two (out of twelve) provinces in The Netherlands, North Holland (where Amsterdam is situated) and South Holland. Calling The Netherlands Holland, it’s the same when calling The United States, Dakota!.. just a reminder for your next visit.
    Thank you for visiting Groningen, I am a 13th genaration Groninger and still very proud to call it my home.
