Easy Diy Modeling Paste - Paint Fur and Textures

- This is a really easy way to create some modeling paste that will let you paint thick fur texture. In my experiments it dries very hard, and is reasonably flexible. You'll want to do your own experiments to make sure it will work for your project, of course. This recipe just uses drywall joint compound with a dab of acrylic paint.
I've seen other videos with modeling paste recipes using baby powder and glue. If you've used that version, and you try mine, too, please let us know which one you like best. 👶

The "DIY gesso" that I intended to use for the ram's facial fur doesn't really have a recipe. It's just drywall joint compound with some glue added to make it more brushable. You can use it for some textures, too, but the edges will be softer and less well-defined.

Good idea :) I've used compound and acrilyc paint as modelling paste on canvass etc. for a long time, because the paste you can buy really is very expensive. But I'm surprised here, my mix was the opposite, more thick paint and then I poured a bit of compound to it until I liked the consistency for my project. That did of course keep the paste from breaking, you could work the details and it still stayed smooth where you want it. But I like your approach, it is even cheaper, too.

Do you mean using photos as references when sculpting? I always do that. I didn't when I added the fur to the ram, because it's going to be used as a theater mask, so really small details won't actually be seen. So I rushed through it to get the video done. If it was for something people would see close up, I'd put the fur where it belongs. 😊

Can you put this in a very shallow silicone mold ? I need it to be somewhat flexible so it doesn't crack being released from the mold.
It's really more like a paint than clay - I really don't think it would work, but you could try it and see what happens.

is the DIY gesso cheaper than buying a gallon of gesso?
It's a lot cheaper than the brand I've been using. I've never bought a whole gallon of gesso, so I don't know the answer to that. The DAP joint compound and the glue both cost about $22 a gallon at my local store. I just checked amazon, and it looks like they have an economy gesso for slightly more.
When making paper Mache, could I mix a little bit of bleach with the water so that mold doesn’t spread afterwards?
I haven't had a problem with mold, so I haven't tried it. Some people have told us that clove oil works well for that. Bleach evaporates, so the oil might give longer protection - but the best way to avoid mold is to make your sculpture dry as fast as possible, and then seal it so it can't absorb moisture from the air.
I did not try it myself but I think you can just mix fine sand with the cheapest white paint and you get a simular effect. This is what they do at my art school.
I think that would make an interesting texture, but I'm not sure it would work for fur. I needed something really smooth for that - but I might try the sand idea for another project. Thanks for the tip. 😊
A lot of folks add glue to that same recipe.
