These are much better than the actual XPS lineups

Without this video, id have completely left Dell out as a potential option. Shame what they did to the XPS line, but whatever. Once the Lunar Lake CPUs are available for this Precision line and ASUS's ProArt line, ill be making a decision between the two come early(?) 2024.

Why does it feel like so many "creator" laptops are so limited these days?
I mean, the soldered RAM and Wi-Fi cards, the 60 hz screens, and limited port selections compared to gaming laptops are dealbreaker for me! Honestly, I'd probably get a good gaming laptop over a creator laptop and save some money.

      It is.
The notable, true "creator" laptop with Quadro class GPU are so limited these years.
In 2024 , only MSI has it
      CreatorPro 16 AI , Core Ultra 9 185H + RTX 5000 (Quadro) 16Gb VRAM
      CreatorPro 18 HX, i9 14900HX + RTX 5000 (Quadro) 16Gb VRAM full power wattage
You can also search for other creator models from MSI with lower end GPus like RTX A3000 and 3500 Quadro class
Other Brands are not so serious on this niche.

@ZAcharyIndy Exactly. It seems laptop OEMs cannot or will not make good creator laptops anymore. And it pissess me off.

      @@cameronbosch1213 yea.
I dont understand why manufacturers make this workstation niche as 2nd class citizen to their lineup while clearly the market is there and steady.
we do need gigantic powerhouse in a laptop forms.
other options are Zbook series from HP, Thinkpad and yes the Precision.
of all options available in the market, IMHO only MSI creator series that really brings what matter.
Price is reasonable, built quality is great, performance : they give what we want, design is acceptable.
ASUS is actually the most creative on its ProArt lineup BUT the powerhouse options inside with that ridiculous 60Hz screen is a big no for me.

The Dell latitude 9440/9450 is very similar to the XPS 14 altough being business oriented.
It is important to note that the more business oriented laptops are often missing the d-GPU and the 120hz refresh rate in trade for more robust security features.....which most consumers don't care about. The perfect combo for me would be the design of the 9450 (the huge track-pad) with the specs of the XPS 14.

  • @miguelangelt1445

This really must be the xps line, although I really like their design, they have many compromises, these precisions are a relief, the problem is the somewhat high price and not having a high refresh rate on their screens, after that they are a good team, great video

The Precision is the far better lineup this year than the XPS. I only wish the 16 inch version had the 90Hz 4k+ OLED that ships with the XPS as opposed to the 60Hz 4k+ Oled it ships with.
Having soldiered RAM and WiFi is really disappointing too. Workstations are supposed to be upgradeable.

Love XPS lineup. Keyboard and Sensel touchpads on the 14 and 16 (not 13) are great. Real function keys would have been the only change I'd make.

The precision 5490 sounds tight but quiet, while the precision 5690 sounds louder but it's very hollow sounding where everything mixed up in the middle frequency

The precision models of both these units have better keyboards than the XPS models. No capacitive row on top. Camera on small screen unit very mediocre no doubt. Sound on these units were good although the 16 inch was a little better. Nice to see no snapdragon processors which will eliminate compatability issues down the line. Great review.

There is absolutely no excuse why in 2024 a laptop that is basically not cheap should have a 720p webcam and I for one would not purchase it!! That is why I like the 1080p webcam on the Dell Precision 5690 because in comparison to the 720p of the 5490 you can clearly see the difference in quality. I thought the internal mics on the 5690 as well as the speakers are much better than on its smaller sibling of the 5490. 60Hz refresh rate on both units is certainly a disappointment but if you can live with it, obviously it shouldn't be an issue. Thank you Andrew once again for your very concise video!! 👍😁

Damn, the Dell Precision 5690 ticks all the boxes for me, but in Europe, the lowest tier 5690 starts at €3100 (~$3400). Also, I've been burned so bad after buying the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7610 and having the trackpad die on me 1 month later. I have a huge distrust over Dell laptops, but this one looks great, if it wasn't for that huge price tag

The problem with the Precision/old XPS design, is that they crash Windows (BSOD) when you pick them up by the edge because of their thinness and flex.

For those seeking for "creator" laptop , the lineup from MSI are great tho.
    CreatorPro 16 AI
    CreatorPro 18 HX
    And creator M, Z series.
Yes , all of them with RTX Quadro class like 3000, 3500 all the way to 5000 Ada Lovelace
Kinda sad we are now less and less with true creator and workstation laptops anymore.
Ever since Intel stop making Xeon CPU for laptops , this kind of niche also like in a zombie state.
All manufacturers are focusing on gaming gaming gaming gaming every single time.
While , people like me really need workstation class laptop CPU and GPU which is very very rare nowadays.
No, even high end RTX 4090 still lacking compared to its Quadro series (yep Nvidia drop Quadro naming is so embarrassing), it still can't match the Quadro series when it comes to apps and workloads like CAD and loca/offline AI development.
The Quadro series are bit slower, just lilbit slower than their GeForce counterpart as well as the price is also more expensive.
But for demanding task, like simulation, AI, scientific things, etc etc we can really benefit from the Quadro GPUs.
If you do content creation, once you use the Quadro GPUs you won't switch back to the GeForce ones
