  • VB-17 was the first unit to take the new SB2C-1 MOD III into combat on board USS Bunker Hill. MOD III seemed to fix the weak fuselage structure that formerly would buckle or break on landing. CO LCDR James "Moe" Vose was a veteran and was assigned B-4 aircraft. On November 11, 1943 as part of Task Force 38 the USS Bunker Hill was directed to strike the main Japanese base at Rabaul. This would be VB-17s first combat mission and test under fire for the Helldiver. Vose led 23 SB2C-1s and when the force arrived at Rabaul they were greeted by Zeroes. Immediately the escorting Hellcats engaged the Zeroes allowing the Helldivers to attack the Japanese ships maneuvering to avoid them. After 20 minutes it was time to return to the Bunker Hill but not before the SB2Cs damaged a cruiser and three destroyers with one destroyer being sunk. VB-17 lost 4 Helldivers that day, one crashed on takeoff and one was jettisoned after landing because it was so battle damaged.
    Today's example is from Hobby Master. It is 1:72nd scale and made of diecast with plastic accessories. The model is of the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver from US Navy squadron VB-17, while aboard the USS Bunker Hill, Rabaul Island, November 11th 1943.

    It's nice that you were able to find all of the information about the real plane, even including a picture of the pilot. I wonder if his family alive today even know about this model about his specific plane. And as a sidenote to the viewers who may want an SB2C-1, Hobby Master has a current model, but different unit and livery available now. That being said, they are rather homely looking planes...at least from mid-wing back. Thanks, buddy! 🤠👍

      @@espeescotty I always try to find that kind of information if I can especially when it comes to WW1 and WW2 aircraft. I can take me hours researching and trying to find appropriate relative photos or video. As I always say I try and put a human perspective to these machines as a lot of these men never make it home. I have had relatives comment on some of my reviews about their grandfather or father being the pilot. I'm always appreciative when people let me know and I hope I do their relatives memory justice in my reviews. Thanks as always for your kind words and for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate that too. 😀👍🍻

      @@heavymetaldiecast Well, you're doing excellent work, and you are doing those who flew them, and even who serviced the planes justice. Kind of the same sentiment for the trucks I post on my channel. Of course, the truckers don't make quite the same kind of sacrifices these military folks do, but I always want the owners and relatives to be proud of their trucks when they see my videos showcasing them. Sometimes, the original owners have passed, and their families will see dad or dad's truck in my video, and they'll tell me that they are happy I was able to capture and share the moment in time.

      @@espeescotty Without trucks and their drivers people wouldn't have food or anything!! Truckies are the life blood of any nation, works the same during anyway war, without trucks moving supplies armies would starve and run out of ammo. I have great respect for the men who drive those big rigs. I also run a car club to help people enjoy their toys like classic cars and bikes and I hear some great stories of people finding their dads old car/bike and then restoring it in their memory. It would make you feel good hearing from previous owners or families appreciating your effort. 🙂👍

    So many features on this one - great diversity for displaying and a beast of an aircraft. Step 1 of Diecast Unboxing - make sure you know where all the aerials and fittings are - that way you get to keep em. More steps to follow as I have learned the hard way. Oh yes I have learned!!!!lol!

    • @heavymetaldiecast
      @heavymetaldiecast  3 месяца назад

      I have learned the same lessons,haha some planes are like porcupine's!! And with my bloody sausage fingers it can be a real feat to handle a model and not break anything off,haha. It is a lesser liked aircraft of WW2, but I do like to show some more obscure aircraft that some people may not even know about!!Thanks as always for watching!!!

    Great looking plane. I do love me some planes of WWII Pacific war
    I do have a later version SB2C-4E 1945 in which I do use the stand but with the aircraft pointing down/diving, looks great :)

      Thanks for checking out the video. That would look great displayed in a dive, pity the bomb bay doors cant be left open or are you using a custom stand so you can display it with the bomb bay open? That would look great!!

    Fantastic review. I have this in my collection, even better now that the National Museum of World War 2 Aviation is restoring this particular model to fly! Bonus is the paint scheme is the same. Waiting to see what markings they apply, and their Helldiver should be airworthy sometime this month.
    Sidenote: I wish Hobby Master would produce some of the -4 Helldivers with closed dive flaps. I'm not a huge fan of all their divebombers with both dive flaps open, including on their Dautlesses.

      Yes sometimes with some models there can be too much going on, you don't always need things to open or close. I'm happy with just nice solid builds myself. I'm sure if its a way HM can extend the life of its mold to start doing the -4 variant they may go to the effort of making them!! Keep your fingers and toes crossed,haha. Thanks again for watching!!

    I wasn’t aware of this plane at all 🫢
    It might have been difficult to shoot those rearward guns with the vertical stabiliser right in the way. How did guys not shoot it up while in the thick of combat?

    • @heavymetaldiecast
      @heavymetaldiecast  3 месяца назад +1

      Haha yeah its not really a fan favourite for many people. I would assume there would be some sort of synchronization where the guns would not be able to fire as it traverses past the tail similar to like the had in WW1 planes shooting through the propeller blades. I am not 100% sure as I don't know a lot about this aircraft either,haha apart form there were so many things wrong with it,haha. When the Navy was replacing their dive and torpedo bombers the Avenger torpedo bomber was started 2 years later and was in service before these dive bombers were finally safe enough for service ,haha
