Paramedic here.. you do NOT want extensive stab wounds to your legs, even if it misses the femoral artery you can still easily die from blood loss. Wounds to the arms are MUCH more survivable.
I was thinking that too (medical laboratory student) and the attacker should've tried going arround the leggs instead lf just right at them in my gym weve tried this and you can just lock the leggs up push them to the side and you have free access
And if you continued to cycle your legs that fast with those kinds of cuts, you'd bleed out quicker, wouldn't you? Also the fact that as you take injuries your ability to fight diminishes greatly.
I agree with you here that arm wounds are more survivable than leg wound, but how does the risk of wounds in the rest of the body (torso) compare with leg wounds? Just as bad, less/more preferable? For me what I don't like is that you will need your legs to eventually run away or get help. If in a closed space trying to survive with no where to go, maybe if you are good it is worth it?

Most humans can survive defensive cuts to the arms for several hours, even from multiple cuts or stabs... but the legs carry vastly more blood and are under constant useage from keeping us upright, which means more blood has to pump into them, increasing blood loss and you can bleed to death in well under an hour and even minutes even without an arterial wound. I feel like Ranton has filled the role of the basketball player! He's not big, but despite being a gamer and not being thoroughly fight trained, he's stayed athletic after leaving the temple. Craig's a natural weapon and an achievable level of skill with his sporadic training. Loving all the characters and really enjoying this season - and all the extra content from different creators like you, the Jeffs, Ranton!
I was watching Jeff Philips Channel and when Natan did the back kick on the attacker , the attacker ended up pissing blood and was hospitalized for a week
My guess is Craig has some experience playing rugby because the way you tackle dudes and the way you control dudes trying to tackle you looks exactly like what happened there. When you are used to big dudes crashing into you, you learn to absorb impact and respond to the body mechanics far better.
When I first saw the spinning back kick thrown by Natan... I felt it too, Dammm... BTW the knockout hooks from Ranton were AWESOME... Can't wait to see it all
I'm so happy to finally see content showing exactly how dynamic a knife attack is. Ive been in very heated IRL debates about the effectiveness of "knife defense" ...outside of a quick knockout, a gun, or a melee weapon of some type your chances of winning/surviving are slim to none.
Something that does irritate me about this is that a lot of those upper back stabs are not particularly done with any real force and I have a hard time believing that any of them would actually go through all of that bone protecting your vital organs. Also I feel like some of the cuts are underestimating how hard it is to get through clothing .
Next season needs to have some more diverse body types, most of these guys are a lot smaller than their attackers. While it's still amazing most people got at least 40% survival against a bigger guy with a knife, we need to see how equal weights, equal reach and heavyweight striking power fairs in the shank tank. It looks like the 1 common deficit these guys all had was not having greater isometric strength than their attackers, which is different from the strength to have speed/power because it deals with the ability to control and hold. They _all_ at some point in at least 1 round had the knife hand grabbed and held for a few moments before they could be fatally wounded, but lost it when the rugby player muscled out of their grip. Someone also needs to represent a pure striking sport the same way Jordan was representing pure grappling. While Jeff and Natan are amazing strikers and Natan is levels above everyone else, mma doesn't have the _best_ strikers in the world. We need a high level boxer or kickboxer or Muay Thai fighter or a sanda fighter to get in there, see how that improved power and timing and distancing fairs when they have less grappling ability. Also, weapon on weapon stuff should be planned next time. Having weapons yourself factors in to "self defense" and we could see how different trainjng modalities affect survival. Maybe bring in a weapons art like Kali or HEMA to put it to the test.
My problem with the shank tank is that it's definitely worst case scenario. Like not every knife attacker is also going to be a proficient fighter like some of the opponents here. But if they are then of course youre kinda screwed
get gud. Actually though, try throwing kicks at like 10% speed and focusing on form. It'll force you to consider all of the micromovements you're making. For instance, on a side kick or back kick, make sure you're pulling your leg back to you as well as down, so you don't step to heavily into the recovery. Also, practice throwing kicks into air, into a heavy bag, into a heavy bag that's swinging toward you, and into a person wearing a body shield. it'll force you to adjust your weight in real time to what you're hitting. Also also hip mobility and strength. You may not realize how much you're using the momentum of the kick as a crutch to get the kick high enough. Weighted side leg raises do the trick.
Kick low. Most people can't take even a single well thrown leg kick. Learn to throw the oblique kick to the side of the knee to dislocate the kneecap. The higher you kick, the more you change your equilibrium. Practise balancing on one leg, so that you have the body awareness. You don't need fancy kicks to be effective. Learn the three best low kicks you can throw and practise them over and over.
I think a heavy sweatshirt would make a better counter to a knife than a duffle bag would. They used cloaks in duels against daggers (cloak and dagger) back in the middle ages. The cloak would be wrapped around one arm as a shield, and waved around or thrown at the opponent's face to obscure their vision.
Dude ranton did so so well. He lit that dude up the first round 😂. I guess showing intimidation even if the opponent has a knife is a good strategy to make them fearful. Definitely not a flawless strategy but it gets em to back off a little
I said a similar comment about Jordan wearing shoes on Rokas' video. Jordan replied & gave his reasons, but I still think not wearing them was a mistake. Nice to know a pro agrees with me. He still did well though & it was amazing when he kicked the knife out of the attacker's hand, grabbed his arm, rolled him over & made him tap with an arm bar.
Sensei Seth: Here's a question for you. To me, one of the challenges in simulating a non-cooperative, real time knife attack simulation is hard because you cannot actually kill/maim the simulated opponent and as such, you have a juggernaut of an opponent in an armor attacking you relentlessly. For example, a throat shot and/or eye gouge to the face against a knife attacker would significantly slow subsequent knife attacks, but you will seriously injure your opponent if that is actually practiced. Also, there are techniques in Filipino and/or Silat that catch the knife hand and attack the joints/limbs in a way that incapacitates the hand from holding the knife -- if this is part of the exercise/simulation, then it would be a more fair and/or realistic result. Finally, to me, it is worth noting that nearly all of the contestants have non-expert experience in combat knife situations even though they may be expert martial artists, such that in this category, it boils down to reflexes, luck, and tenacity. If anything, it proves the point that even if you are a martial artist expert, a bona fide knife combat is not for someone who is not expertly trained in the art -- you will die 99.5 percent of the time if you are not an expert in that department -- don't even try in the street. I think for season 3, Rokas needs to bring in knife experts from different types of careers -- law enforcement, military, private security (bouncer, etc.), knife martial arts experts, and/or potentially people who have served time in real life prison situations. I think it will be a more interesting and realistic simulation compared to professional and youtuber martial artists who may not have the requisite expertise level on what seems to be a highly technical field of knife fighting.
yes i agree completely. But these youtube guys are either stupid or arrogant. i've been arguing with them for years, but they never listen so don't bother lol
We used to run the marker as a "knife defense" training in wrestling there is no good way to exclusively grapple with a knife attacker without striking involved and stunning before dis-mobilizing the weapon or else dead meat
Depends on the HEMA fighter. Depends on their experience and their focus. Give me a Polish sabre or even just a walking cane against a knife attacker, no contest. Give me a rondel dagger, I'm gonna have some issues. Give me the same knife the attacker has, my money would be on my survival because of my experience but I'm still going to get cut or stabbed pretty severely and it won't be my HEMA experience that is the deciding factor. However if you are talking specifically just using HEMA techniques? The HEMA dude gets taken to the cleaners.
Basically 0. Knife's got to wedge into a bone for that to happen, or penetrate so deep that when your body twists it torques the knife out of the other guys hand. Either one is almost certainly a fatal blow.

Natan with the counter roundhouse solar plexus kick knocking the hell out of that guy. That guy was not just lied down resting but he was rethinking his whole life: "Is it worth it to be kicked like this? A 3-bar real life special move?..."
15:47 Beautiful spinning back kick. That’s the best way to defend against a knife attack other than run according to these simulations.
They did Jeff dirty on this one. The guy should have at least 3 points, but maybe 4.
for real, Jeff also used the pen and hit the attacker in the face and they didn't call it a win.
this episode felt like they were making it up as they went
@@RapkoIndustriesyeah they also double backed on someone else’s score randomly throughout but never done it for any of Jeff’s strikes. Seemed like Jeff got really screwed over lol
If you check Jeff Phillips channel they talk about this episode, the reason seems to be whilst Jeff could call time-out, it was also up to the attackers if they felt they were "knocked out" to call it (and a few did), but as Jeff pulled the kick a bit due to sparring rather than going full-out the attacker didn't even notice it, and Jeff couldn't see it due to the pillar, same with some of the pen use, and he was also busy running everything.
(video title is "Ultimate Self Defense Championship Attackers Chronicles E3")
First round - pen didn't go deep enough to actually hurt, but I get the debate, I could give this one.
Second round - he was pulling the attacks and you don't pull your attacks against a knife attacker. Jeff admits it.
Third round - no debate, win.
Fourth round - he got stabbed twice in the heart, we're just pretending it didn't happen or...?
Fifth round - obviously a loss.
There's no way you can say he won 4 rounds. Compare with Nathan who only won 3. Nathan did what the judges wanted to see and still didn't reach 4 wins. Saying Jeff could possibly have won 4 rounds is just crazy to me.

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.
Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).
Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.
Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because Hiko was already dead.
Jesse going Master Ken with a pen was unexpected.
Master Ken with a Pen--that's my new band name. And we will stomp some groins with our triple guitar attack.
🤙🏻
this season seems designed to wreck Jeff 😆
fantastic coverage, your prior experience makes for rich commentary
That spinning back kick was beautiful 😂
I was watching Jeff Philips Channel and when Natan did the back kick on the attacker , the attacker ended up pissing blood and was hospitalized for a week
Craig has his own boss music.
😂
Craig handled the dude jumping off the cage better than everyone else did combined.
🍻
Lol he was just further away
My guess is Craig has some experience playing rugby because the way you tackle dudes and the way you control dudes trying to tackle you looks exactly like what happened there. When you are used to big dudes crashing into you, you learn to absorb impact and respond to the body mechanics far better.
When I first saw the spinning back kick thrown by Natan... I felt it too, Dammm... BTW the knockout hooks from Ranton were AWESOME... Can't wait to see it all
I didn't notice they more or less dragged Aaron out of the cage by his ankles so they could finish Natan's run.
This is Australia 🇦🇺……go be injured outta the way!! 😂😂😂 jokes aside he wasn’t down for long, he’s a tough unit 💪🏻🤙🏻
I'm so happy to finally see content showing exactly how dynamic a knife attack is. Ive been in very heated IRL debates about the effectiveness of "knife defense" ...outside of a quick knockout, a gun, or a melee weapon of some type your chances of winning/surviving are slim to none.
Having Seth's expert commentary as a previous participant is so good.
I like seth, cause he laughs at dudes gettin stabbed in the wiener
That reaction to Natan back kick was exactly what I expected. I also watched it like 30 times. Jeez
I lost it when he pulled guard the second time and straight up started bicycle kicking his ass 😂
needs to be a retractable plastic knife that has a counter when it's pushed all the way to it's limit.
So many of these are little pattycake 'stabs'
The pen is mightier 😆
Over a week late? God, i absoolu hate this. Why does seth makes me crave for his content and doesn't deliver it fast enough?
My problem with the shank tank is that it's definitely worst case scenario. Like not every knife attacker is also going to be a proficient fighter like some of the opponents here. But if they are then of course youre kinda screwed
How do i kick without feeling like i just lost 50% of my blance and they caught it i am dead
Weighted side leg raises do the trick.
practice kicking while holding onto a beam or a wall or something. Practice slowly with good form and then add speed and power.
"what is craig made out of" - hes a fkn trucker, you dont mess with them

It’s not just addressing the weapon, it’s addressing the head grab that prevents you from escaping
Dawg that spinning back kick was pulled outta Tekken 8 he hit him with that Heat Crash
Called a heat smash innit?
Team Craig! Team Craig! Team Craig!
Out here pulling the inoki strategem in the knife fight like an absolute madman
Hey Seth, your reaction on this is surprisingly way better than the original 😅. Love it ❤
Oh btw, as explained by Jeff, his “win” wasn’t a win because the one stab landed was a throat-slit.
It's almost as if they're trying everything to make Craig seem like a regular person.
Ranton smoked a guy then emoted. legend.
Came from Ranton stayed for Craig. This was such a fun episode.
🤙🏻
Last time you guys had to survive 100 seconds of a prison shanking. I'm glad it was a better facsimile for a knife this time.
".. and then the Craig rolls in." ... 🤣🤣😂🍺 Good insight video Seth!
Thanks!!!
The moment I saw Jordan pull guard in the original video I said "I cannot wait for Seth to react to this" 😂
Oof yikes, that spinning back kick went right to the liver, bro's gonna feel that one for a few days I think
Everyone's cool and Natan is a beast. But Craig is my man!
🤙🏻
11:45 If the knife stabs through your foot and gets stuck there then maybe that's a way to win.
Bro, they have the training soft thingy on the pen. Are you crazy they are not just using the actual thing😂
bro who pulled guard. Gotta keep in mind people who wear Jeans and Boots not for longevity, but for protection. A lot hard to slice or stab Denim.
The pen to the...pen...is
There needs to be a knife specialist in there. One of those Filipino knife fighting guys. I doubt they would do any better, but i want to see it 😂
Craig is hardly a regular person.
Seems like the back kick is the most consistent way to defeat a knife
These reaction videos are great. Thanks!
I heard craig once wrestled superman, and the loser had to wear underwear on the outside
😂😂😂
9:46 I think this was my exact feeling first seeing this 😂
Theres a vast difference between regular person and regular aussie
🇦🇺
Dude ranton did so so well. He lit that dude up the first round 😂. I guess showing intimidation even if the opponent has a knife is a good strategy to make them fearful. Definitely not a flawless strategy but it gets em to back off a little
I can't believe that I didn't see the "Sifu" bag takedown attempt from Ranton until watching this react video.
It's dishonest to call Craig a "regular person".
He is a "regular Australian".
Big difference.
🇦🇺
Damn i love Ranton. What a legend.
Anthony Methis is a great call!
Poor Ranton, he's too nice
gotta remember ranton said craig did bare knuckle fights in prison
Sensei Seth:
Here's a question for you.

"What is Craig made out of?" AUSTRALIA. CRAIG IS MADE OUT OF AUSTRALIA.

We used to run the marker as a "knife defense" training in wrestling there is no good way to exclusively grapple with a knife attacker without striking involved and stunning before dis-mobilizing the weapon or else dead meat
Don't knock yourself, Seth - you do a good Aussie accent for a Seppo
...how would a Hema fighter fair in the knife fight I wonder.
HEMA should definitely be represented in Season 3 if we get one. I'd also like to see a boxer, tkd guy, capoeira, and krav maga
@@michaelmartinez3893 For the hell of it see if you can get eddie hall as well or really any professional strong man with mild martial arts training.
As a hema guy, not great.
See Jesse's round - if you get a knife too, then sure, otherwise it's still very hard
Natan is a fucking menace lmao
Comment section and/or Seth, what is the possibility that the knife gets stuck in the body and the attacker is unable to free it?
Basically 0. Knife's got to wedge into a bone for that to happen, or penetrate so deep that when your body twists it torques the knife out of the other guys hand. Either one is almost certainly a fatal blow.
Real talk, Ranton is still my favorite here just for his attitude, but I'm not sure he's going to take the belt.
Yo, seth, you're still alive! Nice
Look into Altra or Topo shoes as well Sseth, in case you just want the anatomical last only rather than fully barefoot.
Helped me since I have cavus, have a good one!
Craigs not a regular Australian guy. Hes a regular Australian truck driver

Appearantly Craig did bare knuckle fights in prison, accordong to Ranton.
Dont be a regular person. Be like vraig. 🙂👍. A Craig approved comment.
