Visiting The Glass Outhouse in Twentynine Palms, California

- The Joshua Tree area has quite a number of interesting attractions to check out and explore. On the eastern edge of Twentynine Palms, right on Highway 62, lies the Glass Outhouse, a unique art installation in the desert. There are several art galleries there, a large number of sculptures, desert art, and working miniature chapel, and of course the Glass Outhouse itself.
You may be wondering what a Glass Outhouse is. Well, it is exactly what is sounds like. A outhouse made of glass. There are actually two of them on the property, but don't worry. We explore both.

Thanks for creating the video of our local attraction! Those of us who have shown art, attended openings, attended weddings, (used the glass facility) and know, Laurel, the curator, would love you to know how special this place is. For over a decade, the waiting list to exhibit has exceeded four years. Recent expansion of galleries has shortened that wait time. Word of mouth was the only publicity for most of the time. An interview with Laurel Would be great and I hope that will happen next time you visit. Thanks for posting. This is a true Joshua Tree area attraction
I was bummed I didn't have time to stop a month or so ago on my most recent drive through. Such a cool place.
This is friggin' awesome. 35 years ago, the area around Twentynine Palms was just meth labs and 'survivalist' types. It's great seeing something creative happening there.
I'm pretty sure that stuff is still there too lol. There's quite a few cool art attractions in the area now too though.

Clever engineering of the outhouses.. I'd have no reservation about using them. They're constructed using one-way mirror glass, you can see out, but you can't see in... they look like mirrors from the outside. It's the same stuff used in large store's and Casino's for security to keep an eye on customers.
People can't tell whether or not someone is actually there behind the glass. It's the stuff you see in Police TV shows, where someone is in the interrogation room being grilled, and it's being watched by other unseen cops from the opposite side... those types of scenes were the bread and butter of the TV show NCIS.
A lot of work has been put into that place... especially the layout of the bottles, impressive.
A really terrific video! Never heard of this place. Those glass outhouses must get awfully hot in the summertime.
They were hot in the winter, I can't imagine them in the summer!

My brother has a homestead in Wonder Valley. We go to the glass outhouse all the time. They have new art pieces there monthly & sometimes the artists are there. I love the lady who runs/owns it & her cute little dog!!
It's great. We plan on stopping by every time we are in the area.
@@SidetrackAdventures you should visit that area the 1st 3 weeks of October I think when all the homesteads from WV to Yucca Valley open their art studios to visitors. There’s over 100 houses to stop at!! It’s pretty fantastic!!

I subscribe to quite a few interesting channels and view a lot of similar subject matter, but I must reiterate (as I've commented before) that you just do a great job with this channel. Your presentation is perfect. Such a nice, relaxed style, and interesting places. Your appreciation for history and respect for these places and the environment is apparent. You've got a great voice for narration as well. It would be interesting to hear your take on some of the Superstition Mountain lore if you ever get out that way. Please keep it up, it looks like you're having fun doing it. Thank you.

The things one miss when having a destination in mind and not enjoying the journey. About a month ago while on Hwy 95 in Parker, AZ was looking to get back to the LA/OC area. Saw a sign that said Los Angeles and took that road thinking it was going to lead to interstate 10 and instead found myself on Highway 62. When you said that people think Highway 50 through Nevada is the loneliest highway but really it’s Highway 62 through the California desert, you weren’t kidding. I was a bit freaked out with the nothingness of all of it. Did go pass the Patton training facility, didn’t stop, and went right past the glass outhouse, and guess what, didn’t stop. Now I regret it after seeing your videos.
Yeah, we were driving it on a Saturday and probably went 20-30 minutes without passing another car at one point. Its crazy, especially considering how crowded Joshua Tree National Park usually is.

Somebody's been to the swain family farm about 15 mi so. of Nampa on highway 45 . It appears to be somewhat dubious and incomplete recreation of the swain family farm along the Snake River. I did not see a Bible in that chapel such as at the Swain family farm Dr Swain and his family are all buried on their property . Dr Swain build a birdhouse everyday for his wife there are hundreds of birdhouses I don't know that he actually built one every day but it said that he did and it's worth a visit. This appears to be mimicking the swain farm. Which started out in the 1800s as a river crossing station in the Swain family
Are those actual functioning outhouses? It might be worth a trip from Phoenix Az. just to use one. I'll have to scope the area out for geocaches and see if a trip is in order. Thanks for the video

The dragon is a miniature duplicate of the Galleta Meadows Dragon in Anza-Barrego Desert.

very cool again 👍🏼 we used to go to a cabin on the west coast north of Aberdeen. Whoever built it designed the bathroom so you can sit on the John and see the Pacific Ocean. Very cool! Thank you Steve your shows are great.
This was a really cool stop! I didn't realize there were still so many roadside attractions in off beat places! It would be too freaky sitting on the commode looking out at the world! Might be cool once I got used to it, but I don't think that's for me!
I think a person would be safe using the Glass Outhouse if it were a bright sunny day, but...no pun intended, after sunset I believe you would become more visible as it got darker. Interesting pit stop though.

I remember in the 1970s there were still real outhouses here in rural Pennsylvania
I was amazed that there were still hand pumps with Wells that were old style Wells that they had put a wooden platform over and they had these hand pump old style mechanical pumps that you would pump the water out of the well and there were quite a few old outhouses and some of them were still being used out in the country and others that were in town when you went down the alleyways on the side of buildings warehouses and other buildings there were actual outhouses I saw people using which totally blew my mind and I don't know if they didn't have any plumbing inside the warehouse's it's very possible that was the case and this was the only way they could go to the bathroom
People don't realize that it's only been about a hundred years that we've had indoor plumbing and for many rural places it wasn't until the 30s or 40s that people started to get electricity
In the 1940s it was very common to see farm houses that had hand pumps and outhouses and no electricity
We really have it great compared to the way it used to be

I would totally use the outhouse. Let's just say it has more privacy than the ones I've used in Wisconsin and Michigan out in the wild. Basically a crapper in nature. Just the toilet outside in nature.👀

Thanks for showing us this exhibit - i live in Ontario Canada and really have no desire to visit the States anymore but I would if i'd known that this art exhibition was here - it's awesome - also, i would try the outhouse if i really had to pee badly LOL
On a related note, never use the bathroom on a Greyhound bus, for exactly this reason. They have a big one way glass wall. The only trouble is turning on the light makes the one way glass shine the other way. You can't see out, but everyone outside can see you and believe me, they are watching.
We discover this place on the way home from Havasu last September. Love the skeletons exersiing and the one "dying of thirst" under a water pimp.

When you're in the desert the people are scarce and the views are breathtaking. I've had the glass outhouse experience minus the glass -- just you and the toilet seat, the open air and the view. I wish everyone could experience not just passing through but being in the desert.
You wanna see someone use the glass outhouse, just ask or dare any of the local Marines, those same marines are who helped emptying the bottles

Oh, man! This place is insane in the most pleasant of ways. Gotta love the creativity of places like this. Won't catch either of us using the outhouse though. 🤣 Shame we missed this when out in that direction though!
Using those outhouses would be really awkward, especially with them being the main attraction that people come there to see. All eyes would be on you when you exit.

Now there is something you don't see everyday! 😂 I remember reading that there were some 2-story outhouses somewhere in the midwest, but this one takes the cake!
I've seen a picture of the 2 story outhouses. I imagine they are fine if you are on the 2nd floor.
