This is one of those cases I really hope there's a podcast clip eventually of them more casually taking responsibility, you sort of have to be formal in a video like that but then your apology seems doctored. Listen, I still love the Ghoul Boys. I think it was a severe lapse in judgement that was probably clouded by panic over the way that they had handled (or not handled) their own finances. But: "Boy oh boy, is that a laugh, Ryan."

This is the most Watcher has been talked about, and as a yearssss long fan of Ryan and Shane, it's SO unfortunate. Glad they backed off of it, it was a 100% bad idea. Still not convinced it was greed, but definitely bad business and a level of stupidity

Then after some time, they created their own streaming platform, like Netflix, called Watchers and were charging money for subscriptions for it. They were no longer going to be making any content for free, they were simply going to ditch RUclips. Their apology video came out after people were enraged about it (rightfully so) and claimed they did it because they didn't want to lay any of their employees off. And from what I could see in the comments of their apology video, people found that claim to be manipulative because they hired three new hosts that they didn't need, have been putting a ton of money into the quality of the production of their videos and post production, so the need for more money was basically bullshit. They didn't need to hire new hosts, and people have been telling them that the reason they liked Shane and Ryan's videos was BECAUSE of the personal quality they had - it didn't feel like some megacorporation was making videos. Anyway, they really fucked up, got called out for it, and now they're scrambling to fix the broken pieces.
I can't believe this whole thing went as far to charge me $10 per video... this used to be for free and now I HAD to pay to watch this... it's insane.

Yeah, the apology was really good and we should normalize forgiving people when they actually admit and try to fix their mistakes. But Watcher really just showed all they were thinking about is money and that really damaged their integrity.

It doesn’t help that their content is basically just garbage ghost shows and Wikipedia scraping shows where they just repackage Wikipedia pages into a video.

This is the most Watcher has been talked about, and as a yearssss long fan of Ryan and Shane, it's SO unfortunate. Glad they backed off of it, it was a 100% bad idea. Still not convinced it was greed, but definitely bad business and a level of stupidity

For all those wondering I found it out. It's referring to Watchers, the company that Shane and Ryan (the ex buzzfeed employees) made.

@user-mAfuNqrSe020x from what I could gather, they created Watchers on RUclips and even got a patreon account set up. Then after some time, they created their own streaming platform, like Netflix, called Watchers and were charging money for subscriptions for it. They were no longer going to be making any content for free, they were simply going to ditch RUclips. Their apology video came out after people were enraged about it (rightfully so) and claimed they did it because they didn't want to lay any of their employees off. And from what I could see in the comments of their apology video, people found that claim to be manipulative because they hired three new hosts that they didn't need, have been putting a ton of money into the quality of the production of their videos and post production, so the need for more money was basically bullshit. They didn't need to hire new hosts, and people have been telling them that the reason they liked Shane and Ryan's videos was BECAUSE of the personal quality they had - it didn't feel like some megacorporation was making videos. Anyway, they really fucked up, got called out for it, and now they're scrambling to fix the broken pieces.
