    I like that you're not an expert. I can relate. Makes it easier to learn from your mistakes, I would have made more mistakes if not for this video. Sometimes experts take for granted the little thing that us novices miss. Good job man, you saved me a bunch of time and money.

  • @chrislabar22
    @chrislabar22 7 лет назад +6

    Video, great! I love how it turned out. However, the one thing I found wrong, is your use of the word absorbent. Maple is not an absorbent wood in comparison to most others. The reason it takes stain and dye so well is because of the really tight grain. Doesn't want to wick the dye away. Wants to keep it where it is. Unlike say pine, or something. Maple is a hardwood, and hardwoods are hard for a reason. It's like comparing a block and a towel. The block is the maple, and the towel is the pine.
    The words takes dye/stain well is what should be replacing the word absorbent. Other than that, awesome! I love the way it turned out!

    Good on you for giving it a crack mate. And disregard all the hate. I wish there were more videos likes yours when I first started Luthier’ing and I am sure anyone who is genuinely looking to build a guitar or just assemble a kit would appreciates it too. Basically you made the mistakes so they don’t have to.
    My first build was no cake walk either; I ended up having to bind the dam thing twice after being a little to liberal with the acetone.
    I am sure you have figured it all out by now but just in case. Next time you build a kit with a maple/ or similar veneer try and limit the amount of sanding, most of these are super thin and are vacuumed sealed on ( hence all the glue marks seeping through the joins etc) so instead of sanding and hoping to remove same just apply a bit of naphtha or metho and look at the top on an angle in a bright light, you should be able to see any trouble spots. Then only sand the glue spots with 1200 grit. This is the only time you should really be spot sanding other wise keep everything even, otherwise you well end up with big open spots like in this video.
    And secondly I know you were only trying to fix the big open spaces but never spot apply dye or stain, you really want to keep same even. Water based finishes etc really soak in a lot deeper. You should be doing multiple thin even coats. If it was a maple top instead of a veneer You could lightly wet sand in between each couple of coats but as above try and limit the amount of sanding on the veneer.
    Anyways good luck on the next one mate

    I’ve just recently got into watching these types of videos so I’m still trying to learn. So for a guitar like this that is just getting dyed, you don’t put any wood filler and then sand; but you do use wood filler if doing a solid non-dye paint?

    Use a soft t-shirt type cloth to apply stain with a center of cotton or t-shirt. Next time if you have a question of a spot use a touch of mineral spirit to see if glue is still visible. Keep at it...Thanks for sharing.

    I didn't read all of the replays so I don't know if anyone else brought it up but every time you touch the sanded body with your hands your putting oil on the surface from your body. You should be using a tack cloth.

    I’ve heard of ‘veneer tops’ on Les Pauls (arch tops) and I say to myself “how do you veneer an arch-top?” Veneer is easy on flat surfaces BUT on a 3D surface?? Is the veneer ‘vacuum bagged’ onto the top? Also a tint/pigment/dye with larger particles will ‘sit’ on top and enhance the tiger stripe AKA figure. I don’t know this for sure but adding stripes by magic marker or airbrushing MIGHT help. I used shellac to get a golden orange on my LP. Then I put epoxy on top of that. NOTE, you may see the 'spots' but NOBODY else can!

  • @cripplehisguitar2798
    @cripplehisguitar2798 Год назад

    It’s always recommended that you try all of your colors on a sample piece to make sure you get the right color from the start. You have a faux binding on this build but if it was a cap instead or a flame maple binding when you apply that much stain it can bleed into your binding. This is a huge mistake to try and correct and water based stains are the most susceptible to bleed through. This is the biggest reason why some use alcohol based stains because they dry quickly do to evaporation. Just an FYI.

    I think everyone on youtube goes too heavy with the color. Would like to see a lite tint with the natural wood tone showing. Recently saw a Gibson Les Paul with a very light blue green tint and a AAA flame top that was stunning. The dark tint is so cliche.
