I was at this "rehearsal". It was at 5400 N. St Louis (WTTW studio). My gf was tape librarian and was nice enough to invite me. There were only about a dozen spectators in a small set of bleachers. I got to speak to Bun and he was as nice as could be... talked about Japan some. Rick never broke character - always nutty :) Unbelievable "private" performance.
Amazing how these guys can shine even thru what sounds like a dry monitor mix for vocals and straight guitar, bass & drums. Saw 'em 29 years ago last April in Memphis. They're still getting better.
This was recorded at Studio A WTTW Chicago. Was a rehearsal performance for Soundstage 1981Chicagofest at Navy Pier . The sound and video on these tapes is raw was never intended as a show.
Mr Coffee ...uh...that's Pete Comita on bass in the video. He replaced Tom for the All Shook Up Tour. Tom did play this song on the album though and of course sounded great. Tom was a huge part of CT's sound and was missed until he returned in 1988!
@Nathan- Agree completely that Robin is indeed the greatest vocalist of all time. No one even comes close to competing. The only person that I can think of that doesn't completely fizzle out when comparison is perhaps Oleg Menshikov. Some would argue that these two must be twins separated at birth ! 😂😂😂 💖💖💖
This was originally supposed to be a "Sound Stage". Channel 11's SoundStage at the time was changing shape and these tapes were (for some reason) shelved. I'm so glad they're out now.
@jasperbluto Samurai Rock band (live on radio boot). among my favorite albums, ever. maybe a tad loose, but the band is giving it their all. its early CT..maybe In Color Tour era. good luck finding it. much less polished than Budakon, probably untouched. untouchable. i cant believe im posting a youtube comment...
@ECBBFan I don't recall it being related to ChicagoFest and I can't come up with the year (probably '81 if I had to guess). It was to be a SoundStage production. I heard nothing more about it's purpose at the time. WTTW generally did a wonderful job with Soundstage. Soundstage was discontinued around this time. I spoke with a "manager" and Carlos. The manager told me "no pictures".... Bun called the manager over and said, "hey, how 'bout lettin' these guys take some pictures?
@MagicHole Where can one here the original, unedited concert at Budokan tapes that you're saying are so shitty? I've heard various "full length" versions of the Budokan shows. Some of the versions are tepid and lack the fire of the songs cherry picked for the originally released Budokan concert LP in 1979, but the playing on the songs didn't sound like the train wreck you describe.
they have tons of unreleased live shows. cheesetown, samurai rock band are early, raw and what a live album should sound like, Budakon was so glossed up, its basically a greatest hits album. don kirschners rock concert...capital theater. id watch them do Hot Love on Conan in 98, its unreal... ruclips.net/video/MZ8yXQFkYYE/видео.html

Most live albums are 'cleaned up' in the studio, not a shocker...but the record label wouldn't pay for the kind of re-recording you describe--it would be too costly. I doubt most vids of CT live posted on RUclips have been overdubbed or subject to post-live studio doctoring. u seem to have serious consipiracy theory/cheap trick issues...call them shit if u will, but CT has tons of live vids here and you have, well, nothing.

It went platinum quickly when it was released, multiplatinum several times over since...so the millions of people who bought the album are all wrong and you're right? hmm, I wonder...they've got lots of tight performance from over the years posted here on RUclips, I've seen them live myself, didn't sound like the band you describe...

especially when they still tour so heavily. others have held their voices fairly well (steven tyler) but have such light tour schedules
