You are my favorite #1 RUclipsr. When I make pancakes for the kids, I save bread bags and stack them like burger patties with freezer paper in between. Saves space and they are easier to separate.
When you showed the containers you used for the taco meat, it reminded me of a trick I’ve done when taking food to someone. If it’s a casserole, of course the foil pans are perfect. For other parts of the meal, like salad, rolls etc, I stop at my regular grocery store & visit the Deli & I get some of their containers for a nominal fee. It’s perfect to take things in & nobody has to return dishes!
I layer the pancakes on a cookie sheet with parchment paper in between the layers. Freeze. After frozen I put them in a zip loc freezer bag. They’re easier to take out a couple at a time and reheat that way. I LOVE minimalist mom!
Christine, you need souper cubes! They freeze your food square shapes for space saving in your freezer. They’re food grade silicone so you can pop out the frozen cubes. Four cubes fit into a gallon size ziplock. Check them out!
We started prepping and freezing our greens we buy from the farmers market! We boil, blanch, and portion them out so it's a lot easier for us to incorporate them into meals.
Always enjoy hanging out with you ;) I love the minimal mom too! She does a Sunday devotional with her sister that’s also very encouraging. There’s something very calming about her and I swear her hubby can do anything! Lol
My mom would great up zucchini then add a bit salt and drain to remove the moisture, then she would twist in a clean kitchen towel and then spread onto a cookie sheet and freeze then put into 1 or 2 cup portions in the freezer and she would add it to everything from baking to meat dishes , I bet you could do the spaghetti squash as well , it is a great way to bulk up and add nutrients to your cooking .
I live on Tucson and have the same problem with mixed. It always takes more liquid than you think. I'm still working on exactly how much liquid to pug in my bread maker to get perfect liafd of bread.
When your freezer starts to get empty, you'll have more ice inside to defrost. Reduce the air space (hence air movement) by putting an emptied milk jug full of water in the bottom to replace the food that's been removed. Then just pitch the water when you fill up the freezer. Also cheaper to run a full freezer than a partially empty one.
Thank you for the idea! I, as a short person, have filled the bottom of my chest freezer with the reusable ice packs from Imperfect Foods to raise the level of the food. I also use reusable shopping bags to organize the freezer, makes it easier to reach too! Much love from Oklahoma!
Game changing tip for you. Use an electric knife like the one use to carve turkey to cut your spaghetti squash or butternut squash. Less risk of chopping off fingers. I also put them in slow cooker whole.
I watch See Mindy Mom - she’s a happy person like you Christine - agree - perfect happy people - she videos on food, meals, exercise - very relatable - I also like Mandy in the Making - comfort food meals - she’s happy too - it makes a difference!
You can use a cleaver to cut the heavier gourds. I usually split them (like chopping wood) if I'm chunking it anyway and then it's easier to get the stem off.
@Makeup Minion Her channel is really young, too. I'm so impressed with her. She's a great source for the food insecure and those living in food deserts.
I love Dawn's channel...The Minimal Mom. Most of the postings are really helpful, especially (for me) the two postings on how to purge and organise paperwork were a game-changer for me.
Did you know if you cut a spaghetti squash in to circles...versus once down the middle tou get longer spaghetti like strands? It has to do with how they grow and form! Cuz science!!! Blew my girls minds when I showed them...on our 15 we grew! ( only had 2 plants!!!)
5,000 feet?! I was in Wyoming for a bit a few years ago. 6k feet high. Wow The water on the stove boils faster. You def need more liquid when baking. It's a whole 'nother world of cooking at high altitude!
My boyfriend said I watch you too much. I went to the store for milk but found a deal where you could get $1/3lb bag chicken wings limit 5. I then got him to download the app for the coupon and got 30 lbs chicken wings for $10 and that is a crazy deal where I am
I tried the breakfast casserole before and the bread pieces didn't go over very well at my house. If anyone is looking for a substitute (maybe for gluten intolerance?) hashbrowns work great in place of bread! I've used both frozen and fresh... but the fresh requires a LOT of extra prep to prevent browning.
You can use an Ice pick to poke holes in the spaghetti squash. Then, microwave for 3 to 6 minutes at a time, rotating each time. This makes it exponentially easier to cut. You can do it long enough to soften it to cut it up to cook in a different way. However, I find it taste just as good if I microwave it until done. This saves a lot of time and energy. I love spaghetti squash!
Instead of using fresh white bread, scour the stores for clearance bakery breads of all kinds. Cube it roughly, bake low & slow to dry completely, cool completely, then store in (repurposed) zip bags or heavier produce bags. I'm in Wisconsin and am able to store my dried & bagged bread cubes in a covered tote in my garage during the winter.
1.) Sheet-pan pancakes are awesome for prep 2.) I only grow veg I can can or freeze because I feel bad about the waste and 3.) I too use my kitchen appliances in other rooms due to the breakers lol
Since watching your videos, I started shopping at my local grocery salvage store. One of my favorite finds is Primal Kitchen and Chosen Foods salad dressing for 50-90 cents each! (Compared to $5-9!) I use the dressing to freeze marinated chicken (also one of your suggestions. You've really changed the way I think about shopping and cooking. Thank you!
You can meal prep a huge one just grind in in blender, place in jars and use 2-3 teaspoons to also add on your beans....... good trick to have kids eat it when they do not like it. Yes they need to be in fridge at all times.
I flipped a breaker once or twice when I use my air fryer, pressure cooker & microwave at the same time 😂😂😂 i didn’t know that happened to other people haha
💓 The Minimal Mom, Rusty Judgement , Montana Haven ( former Amish ), Big Family Homestead, Pegi and Don. And I do watch Dave's channel - Frugal Fit Dad. My thing is : prep, money saving, minimalism, and renovating channels.
If you ever run out of ideas for vlogmas, a trivia episode where we play along from home would be cute. Some example questions you could use: "Which SNL skit do we reference the most?" "What happens when you hit the thumbs up button?" "How many youtube channels does the frugal fit family have?" and so on. Just a thought, anywho. Love your stuff :) You've helped me adjust my grocery buying habits and I am forever thankful.
Another way to use pancake batter is by making deep fry fish taste great too. After its done and ready to serve. Squeeze a slice of lemon yummy in my tymmy.
I bought 10 butternut squash at a grower in my town. Cooked one in the crockpot. Came out good. Almost 10 pounds a piece. Great fiber and vitamin. I so enjoy your videos!
Running with Plants talks about you. And shes helping me to reset my mind about how its not expensive to be a Vegan. Im working on being 100% vegetarian then vegan. Baby steps. As Amy Marion says "how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time". That's helping me. Edit to say I watch you and others to get ideas, plus you're fun to watch.
OMG!! I love the Minimal Mom!! I watch you...then I watch her...then her...then I watch you....you guys are so great to watch and inspire and make my day...By the way, great cook video...love you can figure it all out!!!
Was thinking of you with all those spaghetti squash and remembered an easy yummy recipe. After you cook and shred your squash microwave.. 1 cup green pepper 1/4 cup chopped onion 1-4 TB fresh cilantro 1/4 cup chicken broth 1 TB olive oil 1 TB cider vinegar 1/4 tsp salt 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 tsp cumin Microwave on high 3-4 min Toss with squash and top with olives, nuts or cheese 😀
Breakfast are are a great idea to make ahead and freeze. Even though my kids are older for me going to work it’s perfect. And I do freeze my spaghetti squash and acorn squash. They are amazing and I love I can have them from my own garden. 🙏🏻❤️ thank you for all you do. I absolutely love your channel. 🥰
When you burn yourself immediately run cold water on the burn then pat dry and add a layer of vaseline and leave open the pain and burning stops immediately and that was a tip from my teenage daughter
After nearly losing a finger to chopping a spaghetti squash - I don’t chop - I poke with a fork all over the squash and put in the oven in baking dish - for about an hour or less - cooks up beautifully and knife slides through easily - wish I had your green thumb Christine
I just started the video and I can't stop staring at your kitchen. Its so beautiful I love how the white contrasts with the wood, so classic and elegant.
For next time, putting lavender oil on your burn helps to keep it form blistering. I had just pulled a dish out of my airfryer over Thanksgiving and then grabbed it without a mitt. Ran my fingers under cold water then applied L. oil. No blisters!
So are you or did you plant more spaghetti squash? 😀 We had the same thing with zucchini one year, we had 6 or 7 zucchini plants and 4 or 5 yellow squash. They all produced like bunnies. We had zucchini every night in every shape and form for months and months. We were only a family of 4! Zucchini Tots were a favorite.
I hate burning myself. But, if you burn yourself put yellow mustard on it. It pulls the sting out of it in a matter of a few minutes were ice can take a long time. I used to work at a sandwich shop and would burn myself baking the bread.
I recommend watching Frankie Celenza’s video “The bite and slam knife technique”. It’s great for cutting into big spaghetti squash! Definitely a good quality knife is essential as well. I would link it but I’m old and technically confuses me 🤪
I love the Misfit Market boxes. This bizarre notion (at least to this old farm girl) that produce has to be "perfect" is one I just cannot get behind. I've been telling people what to do with wilted veg and bruised fruit for YEARS now. Did you know MOST wilted veg can be "saved" if you put it in ice water for a couple of hours and use or freeze it immediately? Did you know most bruised fruits can be "rescued" by taking off the bruised parts and turning them into a fruit syrup (like for pancakes) or sauce?
When you burn yourself immediately pour some vinegar on it and also lightly soak a paper towel to make a compress to keep on it for 5 to 110 minutes,,,no more burn or at least it won’t hurt will only maybe be a little pink and shouldn’t blister or scat
LOVE LOVE LOVE The Minimal Mom!!!!!! I watch her channel and her husbands channel. I have been purging so much stuff in my house and feel 100% okay with it.
Glad to know that you can freeze spaghetti squash. I just poke my spaghetti squash with a fork and put into my crock with some water for 8 hrs on low comes out great. I would for sure cut off a finger or two if I tried to cut a spaghetti squash lol.
Cheesy squash, similar to cheesy potatoes casserole. Cook, add sour cream, cheese, cooked onions and peppers... mix all up and baked with extra cheese on top. Yummo
I recently just found your vlog and I've been really enjoying it. Funny that you mentioned Minimal Mom as I just found her as well around the same time. Will have to check your link out for the knives as I just got my own place and could use a good set so I can get rid of all the other ones I don't use. A tip I learned from the Minmal mom....ha!
I love your videos! You should make southwest spaghetti squash! It’s amazing and a no meat meal. It’s also great with beef and chicken. Also, put the spaghetti squash in the microwave and it will be much easier to cut
Haha loved the camera drop at the beginning..that is me allllll last week lol. Thank you for sharing your video with us. I enjoy them. I have a question for you..do you have a "Smart meter" on your home to read your hydro usage? If so..i have a request/question for you. Thank you 😊
A good investment: Essential oils I keep in my kitchen: lavender which would INSTANTLY remove pain from your burned finger. Lemon--great for cooking and cleaning as well (add with vinegar and water in a spray bottle) The Doterra or Young Living brands are edible.
I thought of you the other day as I was making brownies in my Kitchenaid. I thought Christine always says to never crack an egg over a running mixer. 2 seconds after I thought if that, BAM I dropped the entire egg in the mixer.
because I run into this ALL. THE. TIME. I'm curious; when you do something that has audio while cooking, like RUclips, Netflix, Audible, etc., how do you cut through the _literal_ noise? Such as sizzling from a frying pan or griddle, the fan from range hood, mixer, etc.? Crank the volume? Earbuds/Headphones? Pause?
As a celiac I eat sooooooo much spaghetti squash. I also don’t digest dairy well or eat meat which as I’m sure you can imagine makes life super convenient for me. Lol. At least it wasn’t cancer or chrons disease. A good tip that might help you in the future is to put the whole dang thing as is in the microwave for about 4-6 minutes depending on size. It will soften it enough for you to easily cut and slice it. I like to slice them into 2 inch rounds use a spoon to pop out the seeds and freeze them. Then I take it right out of the freezer and pop it on a parchment lined baking sheet and roast it or steam it in the microwave. I put all kinds of stuff on spaghetti squash you wouldn’t expect. I do sloppy joe filling curry, burrito fillings chili cheesy lentil macaroni (like cheeseburger hamburger helper but with lentils) without the macaroni, tuna casserole without the noodles. Big Mac seasoned lentils topped with lettuce tomato and “special sauce” Thai seasoned veggies edamame and peanut sauce to name just a few.
Forgot to mention if you freeze the spaghetti squash skin on in the singe serving rounds like I do you don’t need to add water to steam it in the microwave and no matter if you choose to oven roast or microwave the skin literally falls right off after re heating. It will be soft enough you can slice trough with a butter knife and then just kind of peel it off if that makes any sense. Hope that helps. I am a lazy cook and work waaaaaaay too much on overnights at the hospital so when I do cook it is to maximize efficiency

Great tip.
I love you even more now for the sheer fact you cooked something in your bathroom! We can always count on you to think outside the box.
Sheet pan pancakes. Mix, put on lipped jelly roll pans, bake, cut into pieces. No need for constant flipping.
😮
At what temp? Approx how long?
Yes! I was coming to say this.
I did that recently!

For spaghetti squash, I put it in the microwave for about 15 to 30 seconds. It makes them much easier to cut.
I've also used this tip for butternut squash. A little bit in the microwave makes the peeling so much easier.
Don't forget to poke some holes in it before you microwave. My friend did it with out poking some holes in it let's say it wasn't good.

My mom makes this for Christmas morning, she calls it egg strata! It’s delicious and there’s a lot of different versions you can make!
You’ll have to mention on an upcoming video how the spaghetti squash reheats (texture wise) after being frozen. 🤷♀️
Is it something you use yourself?💕
It's awesome! I serve to my (Italian) husband just like spaghetti with our favorite sauce and he always loves it!

1 cup green pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion
1-4 TB fresh cilantro
1/4 cup chicken broth
1 TB olive oil
1 TB cider vinegar
1/4 tsp salt
1 clove garlic, minced

If you let the zucchini grow until the vine dies they also become shelf stable. I did this in Oakland California.

Use sour cream or yoghurt on burns, helps a lot better than ice. Apply and hold on spot for 5 or so minutes, do multiple applies (each 5 min)
Six Sisters Stuff is pretty cool. Meals for the Instant Pot or Crock Pot. Those are some nice steaks. Mine is cooked extra well done ( no pink).
Pancakes heat up great in the toaster , we did that at breakfast club in my kids elementary school days .
Breakfast Casseroles are the absolute best. Never thought to put mustard though. Gotta give it a try.

I asked for a salad spinner for Christmas because I have been so inspired by you using yours Christine 🥳
She's in Her Apron is another good one. Six Sisters Stuff as well.
Cold yellow mustard on a burn is a magical chef's trick. Squirt it on there and replace as needed. Soothes the burn, reduces pain and redness.

Always great to watch your videos! A bread(really any serrated) knife works great for cutting raw gourds!
Glad to know that you can freeze spaghetti squash. I just poke my spaghetti squash with a fork and put into my crock with some water for 8 hrs on low comes out great. I would for sure cut off a finger or two if I tried to cut a spaghetti squash lol.
Whenever you burn yourself, put mustard on it. I used to work at wendy's and went down the line of condiments to see what helps burns.

Chef trick my son taught me years ago: apple cider vinegar for burns. Other vinegar works also
I so need to grow spaghetti squash this year! Lol. I tried zuchinies for the first time and only got 2. Next year I will do better im sure.

Pause?
Use the tip of a knife to "score" around the squash 1st then cutting will be easy peezy!
Your channel and The Minimal Mom are my two favorite channels!!
Please do a video collection of the five meals you created with the spaghetti squash!!!!! I get in a rut with it.
Vlogmas makes 2020 better! :)
I can finally catch up on your videos and vlogmas! So excited that you’ve filmed so much!
Use mustard for a burn...it really works
Tip...when you burn yourself, put the burn in a baggie with flour right away for about 5ish minutes, life changing.!
"I will now stir this with my non dominant hand and hope I don't throw it on my feet" - I was cracking up
I just love how real you are!
I think you can microwave the squash for a bit, then it is easier to cut.
