'What if we got to see the transition of a slimy, corrupt, but largely invisible and stable authoritarian empire to outright cartoon villainy, but make this transition seem quite rational and logical and show what it looks like from the perspective of ordinary people'?. Andor is about empire and security state, where most of the bad guys are just family-feeding pencil-pushing cogs in a machine so heavy handed that it is destined to break what it tries to fix.
      Andor is a class conscious elucidation of empire and industry, where minor characters build major weaponry to bring home a paycheck, and in which the industries serving the empire are so pervasive that at last empire is not merely the allegiance of the bad guys, it is the setting in which all players operate.

    The scene is Andor that explains the Empire's downfall is the one where Cassian is arrested on the tourist planned for being at the wrong place at the wrong time and then gets send to prison with no chance of defending himself. It means that the Empire has no real justice system left and it will grind anyone without political protection or the wealth to buy that protection. It also means that the Empire's policies are now completely deaf to local concerns. Tourist locations are notorious with letting tourists get away with petty crimes because they need the tourists to come back and/or recommend the location to their friends. As far as the locals know, Cassian is just an average tourist planning to go home in a couple days. So a tourist location now has innocent tourists just disappearing with all their possessions. Once news gets out, that planet's tourist economy is dead for decades. No local politician would support something like that if they had any choice.

      @ An unofficial right is not a right. Kinda like the abortion question. The SC decision stated there is no constitutional factor barring one. A right is explicitly provisioned by written law.
      Back to France. French “rights” are literally subject to the whims of their government. If they decide their is an extant factor you can and will be prosecuted regardless of personal risk of self incrimination or safety.
      “Rights” are unfortunately very thin things with very little safeguarding. The unspecified virus of unknown origin proved that. When a “public emergency” is an excuse to erase your rights they are not rights. When permits are required to assemble regardless of the reason it is no longer a right. When an obvious parody is grounds for a prison term here is no freedom of speech.
      Several women in European nations have gotten prison terms for “defaming” proven rapists by calling them what they are convicted of.

    2:58 This reminded me a lot of a line from HBO's _Rome_ that's stuck with me over the years, where one of the main character's outraged when he finds out he's basically being given a elected position without really having to run for it and the whole election is really just pageantry for the public. He makes the statement that the elections are sacred and need to be respected. Whereupon the man he's talking to says:
    "The Roman people are not crying out for clean elections. They're crying out for jobs. They're crying out clean water, for food, for stability and peace."

    Your questioning if people even really want or care about the concept of freedom or even really living in a Democracy is soul-chillingly on-point. I personally think that, deep down, nobody really CARES about living in a Democracy. They care about living in a nation with what they believe is a stable and functional government that protects and provides for them, and Democracies just do a good job of CONVINCING people that they can do the job on paper.
    The problem though is that Democracy isn't that simple with JUST having leaders in charge. More than any other system, a Democracy demands PARTICIPATION among its voters It demands that the average voter keep themselves informed about the issues, that they educate themselves on their own political system and political and economic key terms. But the average voter DOESN'T care about any of that. They want to believe that watching a 30 minute broadcast on a news channel, even a deeply biased one, is enough for them to know what's really going on.
    Then the politicians find out how malleable and easily manipulated these people are and they start ENCOURAGING this behavior, even changing aspects of the country like the media and education system to keep them ignorant and pliable. I HONESTLY learned more about politics and economics from internet videos and online searches than I EVER did from school, and that should be terrifying.

      We're at a stage where numerous countries have reached a point similar to monologue scene in V for Vendetta, where government are simultaneously hyper-aware of a multitude internal and external threats and tensions as well as being incapable to walk back many of the systems and policies that further increase those threats.
      When faced with the attacks of 911, the US signed the Patriot Act, introduced massive spy programs and escalated war across the globe, thus worsening their perception while greatly enhancing their power projection. Billion dollar corporations in practically every western democracy have entirely gutted so many systems that the only way they can keep seeing growth is to openly buy their way into government while also introducing more draconian measures to fight escalating responses from understandably frustrated groups. At the same time, individuals actively working to dismantle our society walk away unscathed while bemoaning they are wrongfully targeted.
      Andor expresses the worsening state of the UK, Canada and the US (to name just a few countries being ruined by corporate and governmental overreach) through the use of a timeless fictional story, meaningful characters, impactful moments that build up to huge payoffs while also being absolutely scathingly honest about the state of current events.

    @10:55 the "enshitification" process on a galaxy wide economy rather than a single platform or service. Just as a platform will begin by focusing on making users happy, to attract a wide user base, then sell those users to advertisers when the users are invested in the platform and less willing to leave, and finally squeeze the advertisers and the users while offering worse service to both and making massive profits for the platform. Palpatine started out offering lucrative defense and rebuilding projects, so businesses would position themselves to win such contracts, and citizens would see imperial employment or contract work as good jobs. Then when the whole economy was in bed with The Empire, the work could be less lucrative because "where else can you get a job?" and even if you're resentful of COMPNOR looking over your shoulder, if the imperial military complex got smaller, that would threaten your job as well as the jobs of your family and friends; so people were willing to put up with it.

  • @jarrodbright5231
    @jarrodbright5231 2 месяца назад +17

    Of course the alternative motivation for Palpatine to do these increasingly despotic things was to create the rebellion.
    Vader was damaged goods and he needed a new younger apprentice. The Inquisitor program wasn't delivering much, Starkiller (if cannon) went rogue, so he had to provoke the remaining Jedi to come out of hiding and oppose him openly. What better a way to root out a suitable Jedi - one powerful enough to make an impact in the civil war and susceptible to the Dark Side after being involved warfare for years - than generating an open armed rebellion against him for a Jedi to join up with?
    And if a whole lot of people suffer and increase their anger and hatred, making the Dark Side more powerful along the way, hey that's just a bonus for him.

    • @ProtoNeoVintage
      @ProtoNeoVintage 2 месяца назад +3

      I argue this is not a great plan either though. More likely he is going to find someone like Luke, who is strong in the Force and susceptible to the Dark Side, but is more likely to just kill Palps and take his place. The hero who becomes the monster in the slaying of it, so to speak.

    The sentence increase was problematic on so many levels. Including the part where it was never told why it happened to the people who were affected by it. All Andor saw was suddenly getting his numbers increased. And the problem with that is it gave the feeling, that they will remain there forever. Once someone was about to finish they just increase the numbers. It puts people into the position where the only way out is to rebel, or die trying.

    Luthen is the most interesting character within the Star Wars universe. He's been at the game of intelligence and sedition for so long, playing agents off each other and the organizations they work within, that he's clearly multiple steps ahead of the enormous bureaucratic machine called the Galactic Empire. Nearly every scene with him is perfect--masterfully performed by Stellan Skarsgård. The only scene which should be cut out is that moment where his freighter does a Phantom Menace spin, slicing those TIEs in half...awful writing, even if it looked cool.

    Freedom can be defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. However, in practical terms, it's often bounded by the rules and laws of a society, which aim to balance individual liberties with the common good. This means that while individuals have freedoms, these are constrained to some extent to ensure that everyone can enjoy their rights without infringing on the rights of others.

      No. If you consider the economic situation of the empire it is reasonable. The empire inherited huge amount of depts from the republic and it's military focused budget didn't improve the financial situation of the galaxy either. A printed or digital currency depends on mutual trust. Without trust they are only worth the paper they are printed on or drives they are stored on. If you find yourself in a bad economy with a currency that is continiously devalued you would prefer to be paid in something more stable like metals. If anyone in the galaxy could demand to be paid in metal even from palpatine it was the military which he based his power on.
