I just saw Ella's video and yours popped up next. Based on my own experience I will never, ever, ever put anything about my practice on social media. A couple of years ago I wanted to get back in touch with my own Southern US culture and learn about folklore within my English/Scottish/German/French heritage. I sought out those who I considered the "authorities" in those areas to learn from. Almost immediately I accused of appropriating my own culture, I needed to live overseas (I'm in America) for years to know the culture (wanted to but life happened) and was policed even more to a point I left the community completely. I did try to conform to what the influencers and "teacher" were saying but lost my voice in my own practice. Since then I have completely broken down my former practice, and taking a break to find my voice again. Aside from one or two creators that I still watch and learn from, they are my "safety" zone, it will take a lot of evidence to show me it is safe to venture into the community as a whole again. It is all reminiscent of the "hereditary only or get out" vibes from the late 90s.
I soooooo appreciate your comment. It validates all the fears I have about connecting with other witches online or in community. While, I think it is important to know what historical practices are open or closed; witchcraft is also very personal and we all are on our own journey of learning and tuning in to our intuition. It’s frustrating because I’m in the closet to my general community, but also feel I can’t rely on other pagans or witches for support either. Judgement in every direction. I also seek separation from the religion I was brought up in and many aspects of my modern day culture, so have looked to genealogy and my heritage to give me direction and connection to my ancestors. I have also seen so many comments about how (in my case) witches and pagans in Western Europe resent “Americans” who want to explore their Celtic, Norse, or Germanic heritage. So where do we go when we want a deeper practice around who we are as witches and where we come from?

Thank you so much for your bravery to speak up, I hope that those in the community who had similar experiences will feel less alone because of hearing your story. I ultimately had to do a lot of research into the creators I am learning from and their communities. If it helps a couple of really good people I have been learning from, from a Celtic and Welsh place, are Mhara Starling, Kristoffer Hughes and Rhonda McCrimmon. All three have fantastic instagrams and books out.
I feel this so hard. I started my journey almost 8 years ago now and the online witching community always felt really hard-core, even from an outside perspective. I never felt comfortable joining communities because I practice what I call "Humble Hearthcraft" and I don't do spellwork and often forget the sabbats and such and it made me feel like I wasn't good enough as a witch because it felt like no one practiced like I do, that my way wasn't valid.
at first, i thought it was so wonderful that there is "witchy" content on youtube. i'm now, pretty much over all of it. i've been on my own path (a vital point right there) since 1983 (maybe even longer without realizing it). i do not want to belong (not anymore) or conform to this "new witchcraft" trend from the last 10 years.
This was a really deep conversation, thank you. My practice is changing and I’ve really had to rethink what the online community is myself! I’m a new subscriber here ! 🌲

I honestly don't know why I'm finding out about you just now! Living in Bulgaria, which is also situated in Eastern Europe, I feel like I've never heard more similar views on the evryday witchcraft topics - no or less real life communities, being financially excluded (I laughed here, but it is true) and the historical interest to local traditions, which are fairly preserved where we live. I enjoyed the talk very much, much so that I might even consider joining the tag, so thank you! 😊

YES… we so need to be so much more mindful of what we consume! Social media can be great, but just as damaging as it is great!! We all know about the dopamine hits blah blah etc etc .. I loved insta before it turned yucky, it was a lovely visual diary of sorts, until it wasn’t. 😩🤦🏻♀️ … and I suppose by that time most folk are addicted to the dopamine hits. 🤷🏻♀️ I feel it’s a place of “too many cooks” now & they have definitely spoilt the broth.. I loved supporting Patreon for a few I really respect, (you included 🖤) unfortunately health matters have changed this for me, but it’s definitely the place I will be back to when I can!! I can say that as an 'elder' Witch who has always been practising on the fringes of so-called 'traditions' (Folk Witch Slavic/Germanic/Celtic practice based on family) for many decades, I would never police people and encouraged my coven members to create a very personal practice, first by learning a generic foundation, then personalizing it. Sadly, some of the online community can be very aggressive and somewhat obsessed with creating labels (Green witch, Crystal Witch, Death Witch, etc...) which can be divisive. It seems many suggestions from me as an elder Witch, regardless of my diplomacy, is seen as outdated, 'gatekeeping', correcting or criticizing others. Many of us never originated in the 80's Wicca past and openly state we will learn until we pass into the spirit realm, never claiming to know everything. Many so-called current Witches prefer to learn from younger 'influencers' and from the horrible echo chamber of inauthentic and flashy Witch misinformation... So...I get discouraged from sharing my experiences. A 5 second social media short video showing a candle being lit with a makeup influencer saying "That's all it takes" is an insult to those of us who have spent years of hard work and dedication to our craft. I think I'm one of the only creators who got a thumbs down for a video BTW :)))) Despite this, I am grateful for the occasional, authentic online content creator such as you, who are more interested in sharing in good faith authentically, rather than making $$$. Still taking a break from my RUclips channel.

I’m in the closet, so appreciate that you are a professional and a witch. I worry how my business would be affected if I were to present myself more authentically. How did you get past this? Have you had other professionals mock you? Do they even run across your videos? I don’t want people to make tons of ridiculous assumptions about me because I identify as a pagan or witch. It is challenging to find more in depth information on social media. The only social media I consume is RUclips. I also worry about judgement from other practitioners, as I’m still learning- but I also “know” what I know.
Oh, I'm absolutely in the closet in my local community. I live in rural Poland and people here generally don't know English that well & definitely don't seek out content in English, so that protects me from being found & helps me lead this sort of "double life". But I do admit I regularly worry about being found out. I can't imagine being out as a witch in my local community. I know for a fact I'd have to change my career as I wouldn't be accepted anymore. It is what it is & we gotta protect ourselves as best we can. People who can safely be out as witches locally are very very lucky & privileged :)

While this is interesting, unfortunately some that are doing this hashtag or are commenting, have content themselves that is either badly informed or misleading. It's now become the pot calling the kettle black.
This tag is not about calling out but about calling in. People who create or have created said content can also be part of our community and have the right to speak about it and reflect on it- I’ve already seen some of them say that it made them rethink their approach to content and that’s all that matters to me. I’m not a fan of silencing or excluding people based on them having had engaged with some of the things that may have contributed to the problem- on the contrary, I think that if they choose to engage and change anything, that’s a huge success already! Let’s not dehumanise each other and alienate. This tag is meant to hold space for everyone. Cheers & much love ❤️

Case in point: all of these videos are supposed to talk about grifters but not one of them will say the names. Spilling the tea, indeed! Not just getting clicks, beg your pardon! I believe the answer was clarified in their wrap-up: to share & build community, not chase clout & sell yourself, however, that is not the nature of social media. Like PFW stated at the end, the solution is to go back to RUclips video responses with less aesthetics & editing in our dialogues. We do live in some strange times, so I'm hopeful this too shall pass.

I really appreciate your point of view as I've not paid as much attention to the nitty gritty of the community over the years. When I started in the 80’s there was nothing. Now I can buy all kinds of kitschy stuff which I hate. I recently visited a used book store, there were dozens of books rejected by women probably who didn’t find any value in keeping the books. A thing that keeps creeping up for me as a video maker on YT as well, is balancing what I share and what I keep to myself for privacy reasons or magickal secretkeeping aka occult practice. I sometimes seem to get: "it's no use being in an echo chamber". When I do sometimes criticize or stand by my opinion, it is easily considered wrong, bad, fake, etc?? or I get: "this was not anything new or challenging". Whereas it's my opinion quite a lot of people online are being really harsh, even rude and it's considered 'honest'. Staying true to yourself can be a really tough thing to do, so it seems.

Some chosen people will get a pass on a lot of things that are otherwise unacceptable, and vice versa. It’s hard to know which treatment you’ll get when opening yourself up 🫠

This is nothing new. Remember when the craft came out? That was fun, lol. We saw this in the 90s. A bunch of newbies flooded the market, everything was geared towards newbies (which means grifters), a lot of stuff was wrong or just straight up weird, and eventually most of those newbies got bored and moved on and married some chad and had a kid they named skyler and now they buy gluten free snacks while skyler screams in the back seat of their $85k suv. It's fine, its another witchcraft phase, and things will once again settle down.
Nobody said it's a new phenomenon. Doesn't mean it's unimportant to talk about. Many people struggle with the oversaturation of "witchcraft content" out there & find it hard to find pockets of authentic community, authentic sources etc. Look, where I come from "The Craft" had no impact on these things whatsoever because in the nineties we were barely coming out from under the Russian communist occupation and access to western culture was very limited. American trends cannot be applied to the whole world, I'm afraid. Sure, for many newbies witchcraft is a phase that they eventually leave behind to live a normie life. But among them there are those who genuinely want to practice for life, but find themselves lost, alone, confused by the sheer amount of misinformation etc. I think we need these conversations, especially to show the less empathetic people out there that how they present the craft online & how they treat their community has an impact on us all. I choose to talk about it cause I care about my community.

Intereating points. I've act ually had one message me saying you may feel good right now, but it won't last. I told them thanhs. I know there are cycles. I'll be ok. They got so frustrated, they said they were crying, because I wouldn't let them help me. Lol thank you. Some things to be mindful of. I wuah thet qere inly $90-100. I find they are $500 up. I feel you on that. In person is not alwats better. Mine ua connected, which means you can't just find another group. I think anything can be imbalamced.

I’ve been thinking about a lot of these issues for a long time and thinking about ways to share my thoughts and experience about the current culture of social media, especially concerning ritual and witchcraft. I really appreciate your point of view as I've not paid as much attention to the nitty gritty of the community over the years. When I started in the 80’s there was nothing. Now I can buy all kinds of kitschy stuff which I hate. I recently visited a used book store, there were dozens of books rejected by women probably who didn’t find any value in keeping the books. It’s been a relief to not be emotionally traumatized by your video compared to the previous Sister. Your doing all right. - Br Bob AODA

I can relate to the FOMO situation you described. I especially used to think this in my earlier years on social media. Now I am at a point where I want real conversations on witchcraft and to be part of a real and authentic global community!

A thing that keeps creeping up for me as a video maker on YT as well, is balancing what I share and what I keep to myself for privacy reasons or magickal secretkeeping aka occult practice. I sometimes seem to get: "it's no use being in an echo chamber". When I do sometimes criticize or stand by my opinion, it is easily considered wrong, bad, fake, etc?? or I get: "this was not anything new or challenging". Whereas it's my opinion quite a lot of people online are being really harsh, even rude and it's considered 'honest'. Staying true to yourself can be a really tough thing to do, so it seems.
@@AstralLadyTarot Thank you for sharing your thoughts in regards to this! Yes, I agree that people can be very cruel online and double standards seem to be the norm. Some chosen people will get a pass on a lot of things that are otherwise unacceptable, and vice versa. It’s hard to know which treatment you’ll get when opening yourself up 🫠

This is nothing new. Remember when the craft came out? That was fun, lol. We saw this in the 90s. A bunch of newbies flooded the market, everything was geared towards newbies (which means grifters), a lot of stuff was wrong or just straight up weird, and eventually most of those newbies got bored and moved on and married some chad and had a kid they named skyler and now they buy gluten free snacks while skyler screams in the back seat of their $85k suv. It's fine, its another witchcraft phase, and things will once again settle down.
Nobody said it's a new phenomenon. Doesn't mean it's unimportant to talk about. Many people struggle with the oversaturation of "witchcraft content" out there & find it hard to find pockets of authentic community, authentic sources etc. Look, where I come from "The Craft" had no impact on these things whatsoever because in the nineties we were barely coming out from under the Russian communist occupation and access to western culture was very limited. American trends cannot be applied to the whole world, I'm afraid.
Sure, for many newbies witchcraft is a phase that they eventually leave behind to live a normie life. But among them there are those who genuinely want to practice for life, but find themselves lost, alone, confused by the sheer amount of misinformation etc. I think we need these conversations, especially to show the less empathetic people out there that how they present the craft online & how they treat their community has an impact on us all. I choose to talk about it cause I care about my community.

Intereating points. I've act ually had one message me saying you may feel good right now, but it won't last. I told them thanhs. I know there are cycles. I'll be ok. They got so frustrated, they said they were crying, because I wouldn't let them help me. Lol thank you. Some things to be mindful of. I wuah thet qere inly $90-100. I find they are $500 up. I feel you on that. In person is not alwats better. Mine ua connected, which means you can't just find another group. I think anything can be imbalamced.
