I feel so justified by this video. I've been trying to convince my non-anime fans how truly bizarre yet brilliant Jojo's is. I barely understand it most of the time, but I have so much fun with it.
It's trash for kids, first few seasons had some really funny parts, but then it really gets shonenish and repetitive(not that the third part wasn't repetitive, but at least it was funny).
@@andreww4751The first 3 parts definitely had some growing pains, especially part 1 not really knowing what it wants to be yet and part 3, while being very fun, feels too long. But Part 4 onwards mostly feel great and not very shonen-ish or repetitive to me.
If by barely understanding it you mean the abilities or strategies that the characters use are confusing, then yeah, but if you’re talking about not understanding it because it’s “bizarre” then there really isn’t anything to understand with that. Yeah it’s bizarre, but usually those bizarre scenes or whatever are explained. For instance, Kakyoin’s Cherry licking thing is merely just a thing that he does, and Film Theory did a whole video on the whole Bruno licking Giorno thing. It’s weird, but it isn’t mind boggling.
It's so nice to see that Araki's research and hardwork is getting recognition. Only jojo fans know of Araki's early struggles while most think of him as a flawless genius since his art gets exhibitions now.
just 2 moro point on araki life, he worked as an assistant together with Kentaro Miura under Buronson, second thing this funny Araki not only never missed a jump deadline but he also used to make such long chapters that he then had to cut up because the page limit for a jump chapter is 19.
Truly a story about going where you’re celebrated, not just tolerated; Araki had to FIND his people where you’d least expect them and he never gave up because he knew they were out there somewhere. Love it 👑
I'm an amateur sculptor and I really appreciate the link Araki makes between manga and fine art, especially sculptures. A still moment can't be captured by moving film. You miss the beauty of it.

I’m an art teacher and I’ve been working on my own projects with almost no social media presence for years. I have 3 50+ page fan art books, an original board/card game complete with lore and art, and a 150 ish page graphic novel. One day I’m going to figure out how to release things and share them.
A lot of writers and artists were officially unpublished until their deaths, only for them to become posthumously recognised and acclaimed. Even if only one person sees your work, do you really only want to be known after you die?
Create your own website and put your artwork and graphic novel up on the website. Creating websites is a snap nowadays. This is the exact route that I took for my graphic novel as well as my character concept designs. I sell them and I advertise them and I have merchandise as well. There is no reason for the world to not see your talent in this day and age.
ngl seeing this video both made me cry and smile, I currently still am an amateur artist that's constantly trying to improve but watching this really gave me a boost of confidence to keep trying and trying again
I think he might’ve had another channel before, but he decided to completely start over with a clear channel theme and focus and high quality videos from the start. And I guess it just worked.
As an Egyptian artist and filmmaker Also a huge manga fan .. I liked jojo from the style and interesting characters but mostly the attention to details Hirohiko put into the story like how he traveled to the places he’s depicting in his art to capture the essence of the culture and people in it Like when it comes to Egypt “Jojo’s bizarre adventures” checks every box for me as an Egyptian .. he visited Egypt and got everything written in his research.. if u saw the manga or watched the older version of the anime you’ll see everything in the streets from the people in the cafe to the billboards! I always hated how western productions depicted us with how much laziness and lack of research they do on the culture and people ! I read the manga and saw my hometown .. the Egyptian people heck he even included some Arabic phrases in it and didn’t mock or paint the culture in any negative way ! I have so much respect for the amount of passion he put into his projects and how much he not only respected the readers but also respected those people he’s depicting Dude we even got a main character with the same name as I Am “Muhammadu Avdul ” 😂😂😂
What a timing to upload this video, I just got my JoJo 6251 artbook a few days ago! I also got Araki's book a few years ago and it definetely made me apreciate a lot more about his work. That part about how he considers reading manga similar to viewing paintings in a museum and that he doesen't wish to watch his drawings in movement really made me feel like he understands the medium a lot. Like you and Araki said, I really feel like he and his works are pretty misunderstood, with everyone seeing JoJo as this "big weird nonsense meme anime" when it's definetely much more. This was a beautiful video. Easily one of my favorite videos about Araki in RUclips. Thank you for making it!
There's really nobody like araki, his plots straddle the line between brilliant and stupid, he is low brow as fuck, and incrledibly high art, his works are gay as hell and inclredibly straight-normative. The more I think about it the more I find complexities in this man. Truly fascinating.
Thank you so much for making these videos. This one in particular is so freaking inspiring, I am literally crying my eyes out right now. I only ever read a couple of Manga books, and though it wasn't for me, I am an artist, and the process this artist went through to learn and persevere really freaking touched me. You said in the ad break you want to inspire people to chase their dreams, well, you definitely had that impact on me. Thank you!
This video is very interesting, and it tells a compelling narrative, and I think it's rather poorly titled. Like, the subject of the video is Araki's obsession with fine art and how it has informed his journey as an artist - it does not examine in any detail the obsession of the fine art world with his works. I came in expecting an examination of something like, say, the ways that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has been embraced by fashion brands and been influential to young fine artists, but it's basically entirely the other way around. Again, the video is still good, it's just that I think the title promises a subject that the video itself simply does not deliver on.
Great feedback and I completely agree. I thought the video was great but felt cut short, but perhaps it was the incorrect title that made it feel weird.
To be fair I think it has to be titled like this since if you're not in the know, the right click bait title gets more attention then if you already knew going in what it is. I wish alot more youtube videos titled videos if it were a tv show like "The History of ___" but I get it.
Yes! Great video, but maybe a more apt title would be something like "why this bizarre manga is obsessed with the fine art world, and how they became obsessed with him"
Yeah I agree, especially when it's known that Araki loved to reference paintings in his works. He was heavily influenced by art beyond manga, which is another great deep dive. While it was mentioned here, it was cut short.
Jojo is peak art n creativity. Araki's stories have taught me to embrace the wierdness n madness of the human imagination n I'd try to incorporate my own unfiltered wierdness in my creative writing cuz of it. JOJO is so unapologetically crazy that I love it 😂
I love Araki's way of talking about JOJO. Most manga artists seem like weird artists, creating their Opera in the shadows of their studios and coming out once every full moon just to say that they are dying or something like that. And obviously that's mainly due to japanese working culture. But Araki is always so open when he talks about his magnum opus. He always seems so free, like he's doing this just because he loves it. He's as bizarre as his manga.
This is becoming one of my favorite RUclips channels. Seeing you recap the history and struggles that so many comic book artists went through to achieve their dreams and watching them constantly evolving has truly inspired me. Especially as someone who's getting more into comics as a medium and studying the artwork presented in them to improve my own art skills.
Araki's work transcend manga, it's art at it's purest form and I love how he can bring his ideas and characters to life within those pages or illustrations.
I think the popularity of jojo's steam from the fact that there has never been another manga or comic like it. The elements on it wouldn't work in any other manga, but by some miracle, they do. That miracle is called Araki.
you make some of the best videos about comic history, i study in an art school and on this semester we had a comic class, i didnt learn even a third compared to what i learned watching your videos. you gave me the push i needed to look more into the comics i own and the ones im still learning about, bravo keep up the good work
I did not even realize how quickly these 18 minutes of the video passed, I was so immersed waiting for more. I was like that was it when the video ended? I would love a more in depth or detailed video, keep it up.
Hey matttt! I want to let you know that your videos have inspired me to create my own comic series, it's still rough and I'm still planning it, but you are a huge inspiration to me! A video I would LOVE to see is one on kentaro miura, berserk has some of my favorite panels and layouts and I think you're ability to tell stories is so engaging and unique! Of course, I will watch anything you release because your videos are so wonderfully made
I cried watching this esp during his critical and powerful moments. I only watched the first episode of Jojo's but I love the mangaka's life journey. This is such a blessing for me.
That was inspiring. Not only because I feel like I can relate to his process and his difficulties, but because he sought to be understood and found people who did understand him that went beyond just pumping out manga and hitting his deadlines and getting results on a survey. It makes me hope that I can still find that kind of thing as well. Something like that.
I'm glad I waited to the end because my comment was going to be about how incredibly well this story was told. I felt inspired and got a little chocked up there at the end. Great job!
I subbed to this channel when the Elfquest video hit my algorithm. Even though I had never read the series. You told a compelling story about its creators that moved me as an artist. Now you release a video about one of my all time favorite artists and then pieces of media. And don’t just get caught up in the the memes. You show us a man that is dedicated to his craft and stopped at nothing to achieve his goals. You’re doing great work!
I think the special thanks section at the end is slightly cut off! Otherwise, just loved the video. You do such a good job at highlighting these creators’ perseverance in perusing their dreams.
Thank you so much for making this video highlighting my favorite manga artist who inspiried me on why I draw and write stories in the first place. I am reminded why I wanted to be an artist 🥺💗
I never got into manga until I read Jojo. It just moved me in a way no other manga had. I’d find myself pausing and just staring at the pages and marveling at the poses and just breath taking beauty. Dio in particular in part 3 is so statuesque and gorgeous.
Jojo is one of my favorite manga of all time. literally from the jump there were so many of these weird off beat moments that just made it pop out to me. It's clear that Araki is unapologetically himself. Even if there's a moment that genuinely creeps me out or a joke that doesn't land there's still this charm to it. Also, I love his approach to how colors, designs, and story beats play out. He keeps what works, leaves what doesn't, and keeps moving forward. I genuinely hope I'm still pushing and reinventing myself artistically when I'm over 60 years old.
Beautiful! I read Araki's Manga in Theory and Practice a few years ago and it completely changed my perspective of JoJo's - I'm a big, big fan of both his art and storytelling. Thanks for making this and getting more folks interested in this amazing artist and Mangaka.
As someone who is currently working on his own comic, your videos that so succinctly tell these stories of fellow artists of note, the famous and the infamous, are nothing short of invaluable to me. They're a fantastic source of inspiration and information. One day, you'll be talking about my story too.
It's really simple, JoJo's is humanity the good, the bad, and the bizarre. It's art, It's fashion, It's music. It's filled with references from pop culture throughout the years. and Arakis illustrations haven't stopped getting more impressive even to this day. It's a heartfelt love letter to humanity. That's why is one my of favorite series.
Araki calls the theme of Jojo “the anthem to humanity.” I think his genuine belief in the beauty of humanity in its many forms shines through in Jojo. This gives Jojo its portrayal of humanity in their bizarreness and diversity while maintaining its universal appeal.
Dude I'm so glad you did a video on Araki, he's my inspiration for dedicating to drawing, haven't finished watching the vid but I'm sure it'll be great til the end!
Ive always loved jojos art because it expresses something so unique and i like men so naturally im drawn to all of the gorgeous ones in it. I love how free, beautiful and colourful everything is. Theres truly nothing quite like arakis work.
I instantly clicked when I realized you'd be talking about my favourite manga and anime series of all time. I think Araki himself is such a unique person and the fact that he makes this wacky creation himself allows him to pour that unique personality into every page. The fact that he keeps writing it to this very day also shows his dedication to his craft. I think this palpable passion is what inspires so many creators and why JoJo is referenced so often. It's such a one-of-a-kind experience that anyone who goes through it is changed forever. At that point, you can't help but reference it. I know for a fact that few other works have inspired me quite like JoJo. I also want to congratulate you on the video, superbly made once again, fantastically informative and entertaining and the subtle references show that you know your JoJo!
Something I learned while drawing comics at a young age was the art of paneling and lettering. I's just as important as the art a lot of the times. I never went on to get any good but seeing someone like Araki struggle with the basics at a young age is pretty inspiring.
What a great video, I never knew this about Araki. I love JJBA it is my favorite anime, and the art style is the first thing that caught my attention when I first saw it. It makes sense now because he is an artist first.

Amazing work.
Araki's words about how he must be cursed to be misunderstood broke my heart. I see it all too often when I talk about it with friends. Now obviously, I love laughing at the utterly bizarre happenings as any fan does. What irks me is when people who don't bother to fully understand Araki's work just say that JJBA is "gay" or "weird". Araki didn't make JJBA to make people gay, obviously. Hopefully more people will understand Araki's TRUE purpose for JJBA in this video. After all, Araki himself said that JJBA's themes are to celebrate humanity. Flaws and all! And the fact it feels like a diary of sorts to Araki is just beautiful.

Araki drew Jonathan in some of the poses and clothers in Lopez's works. Look it up on the wiki
The hands are in that very specific position, I'm not exactly sure how to describe it.

It's so nice to see that Araki's research and hardwork is getting recognition. Only jojo fans know of Araki's early struggles while most think of him as a flawless genius since his art gets exhibitions now.
The same people who admire araki for the genius he is are also the same people that act like he has dementia whenever he makes a plot inconvenience
@@passiveinternetuser I mean he is a demented ass But DAMN he is good at it .
@@passiveinternetuser ppl who keep saying araki forgot are stupid, this is coming from a jojo fan btw
Much as I don't like JoJo, even I can't deny of the art.
just 2 moro point on araki life, he worked as an assistant together with Kentaro Miura under Buronson, second thing this funny Araki not only never missed a jump deadline but he also used to make such long chapters that he then had to cut up because the page limit for a jump chapter is 19.
Araki is the only man immune to procrastination smh
two contrasting mangakas
Miura was under Buronson? Interesting.
@@DragoonCenten I mean the influence is pretty clear in Miura's case. His style is closer to Bronson than any artist
@tsukuneboy See, the funny thing about that, is that Buronson doesn't do the art for HNK.
Truly a story about going where you’re celebrated, not just tolerated; Araki had to FIND his people where you’d least expect them and he never gave up because he knew they were out there somewhere. Love it 👑
araki's art is incredible. simple as that, the sense of color and use of fashion. it goes beyond any standard manga art style
I can’t get over the wonky proportions in some panels.
Cause he copy from fashion magazines.

I'm an amateur sculptor and I really appreciate the link Araki makes between manga and fine art, especially sculptures. A still moment can't be captured by moving film. You miss the beauty of it.
Blood type isnt too far out there in a Japanese character description. Its a common belief in Japanese culture that your blood type can predict or perhaps determine your personality, in much the same vein as the chinese and astrological Zodiacs.
Not just Japan. All of Asia. The blood type of every pop star in China is as well known as their marital status
Makes even more sense for Jojo cuz Fate is an important, active force of nature in the series

I’m an art teacher and I’ve been working on my own projects with almost no social media presence for years. I have 3 50+ page fan art books, an original board/card game complete with lore and art, and a 150 ish page graphic novel. One day I’m going to figure out how to release things and share them.
Please do, sounds great ❤
A lot of writers and artists were officially unpublished until their deaths, only for them to become posthumously recognised and acclaimed. Even if only one person sees your work, do you really only want to be known after you die?
Please do sir. Would love it if you could share your Instagram if you do have it. I am a small artist too
Good luck! We’re rooting for you!

As an Egyptian artist and filmmaker
Also a huge manga fan .. I liked jojo from the style and interesting characters but mostly the attention to details Hirohiko put into the story like how he traveled to the places he’s depicting in his art to capture the essence of the culture and people in it
Like when it comes to Egypt “Jojo’s bizarre adventures” checks every box for me as an Egyptian .. he visited Egypt and got everything written in his research.. if u saw the manga or watched the older version of the anime you’ll see everything in the streets from the people in the cafe to the billboards!
I always hated how western productions depicted us with how much laziness and lack of research they do on the culture and people !
I read the manga and saw my hometown .. the Egyptian people heck he even included some Arabic phrases in it and didn’t mock or paint the culture in any negative way !
I have so much respect for the amount of passion he put into his projects and how much he not only respected the readers but also respected those people he’s depicting
Dude we even got a main character with the same name as I Am “Muhammadu Avdul ” 😂😂😂
MUHAMMAD AVDUL!!!
I find it inspiring that all his hardwork didn't go to waste.
All he had to do was reach the right audience. That's marketing!
No way, a Matttt video about Jojo? I'm surprised lol.
IKR, this channel cover a wide range of topics from different places and times. That's a neat quality.
kentaro miura next maybe?
Not very surprising he's made a couple manga videos and jojo is just kinda a given in manga history
Manga = comic

17:47 wtf is Araki doing with Sam Raimi? lmao
Araki interviewed him for a Playboy magazine back in 2004 when Spider-man 2 released. He's a big Spider-man fan
There's really nobody like araki, his plots straddle the line between brilliant and stupid, he is low brow as fuck, and incrledibly high art, his works are gay as hell and inclredibly straight-normative. The more I think about it the more I find complexities in this man. Truly fascinating.
Part 3 is Yaoi for straight men.

Thank you!
Just wondering, what were the manga you tried?
I thought the video was great but felt cut short, but perhaps it was the incorrect title that made it feel weird.
i thought that too tbh lol .
i still enjoyed the vid very much but i expected the videos to be about something else :)
That miracle is called Araki.
dude i started tearing up im so proud of araki this video made me feel like i knew him in person 😭

Thank you for making a new video right as I’m done binging!
I never got into manga until I read Jojo. It just moved me in a way no other manga had. I’d find myself pausing and just staring at the pages and marveling at the poses and just breath taking beauty. Dio in particular in part 3 is so statuesque and gorgeous.
Try Crayon Shin. Don't stare at the elephant.
Yet, people say JoJo’s art style is ugly. When it’s the most beautiful and stunning art ever made into a manga.
tHEY'rE uGLY!!!!!
Matttt you are now officially a Jojo reference, well done

@LuisSierra42 hello Nicholas Cage
Araki calls the theme of Jojo “the anthem to humanity.”
I think his genuine belief in the beauty of humanity in its many forms shines through in Jojo. This gives Jojo its portrayal of humanity in their bizarreness and diversity while maintaining its universal appeal.

Hi, hispan fan here
I instantly clicked when I realized you'd be talking about my favourite manga and anime series of all time.

I've seen your Walking Dead video a while back, and while watching it I just thought "Wow this guy makes so insightful,well-structured and well-reasearched videos, hope he makes a video about Jojo one day". And you actually did wow, and I'm so happy for it. I've been a die-hard fan of Jojo for more than 10 years, and there is so much information about Araki that you put in this video, that i never knew about. Amazing video once again, Matt.

You understand Araki, you don’t just say haha look this is so weird and random and the artstyle looks funny and the poses are gay, you really just *GET* it which I wouldn’t have expected but I am very pleasantly surprised to find out!
