  • I struggled with addiction for almost 10 years. I have been in and out of jail/prison for years. I now have my Bachelor's degree in criminal program support services. 📚 I hope to use my experience in the system and my degree to help others better understand addiction and our prison system. My brother died in prison. I was given a 4 hour time limit to come see his body and it took 3 hours to get there. He was mentally ill and overdosed on his psych meds he stockpiled. The only reason he got an obituary was because I paid for it. No one wanted to claim him. I was the only one in my family who would. He was my best friend. ive never been to prison but i had to go to the hospital when i was in jail and they didnt call my husband obviously. but my nurse kicked the supervising officer out of the room (for my privacy) and i broke down crying that my husband didnt even know where i was and she whispered that she would tell him, and i gave her the number using my fingers and she walked out and called him personally to let him know where i was and that i was okay. it was one of the most kind things anyone has ever done for me especially knowing now that she risked her job to do that.

      I’m not trying to be insensitive, but that is a huge security risk. I have a great friend “female”, who assisted with a male transport to the hospital. While he was in the restroom, when he came out he rushed her and tried to take her weapon away. The weapon discharged in the X-ray room, luckily they were able to get control of the situation and nobody was hurt. So we must look at the other side of this, there is usually a reason for these rules, whether we agree with them or not. It’s about the safety of everyone.

      I don’t see what the problem is? Their families are allowed to claim them, if no one wants them, are they really supposed to spend thousands of dollars on expensive gravestones ? • @emilyviktorija9012
      @emilyviktorija9012 3 года назад +28

      @@TKUA11 The problem is that it’s dehumanizing. Every human has basic rights, and I think a respectful death is one of them. It is morally unjustifiable to bury someone with no name on the gravestone just because they have no family, whereas inmates who have family get a real funeral. The idea of “I don’t want my tax dollars going to that” is ridiculous. Your tax money is going to a lot of places, and a lot of it is disturbing to many people. A lot of it ends up in politicians’ pockets. You aren’t paying for America. You’re contributing a few dollars to various different things. All the money is pooled and divided. You live in America, your tax dollars are no longer “yours.” If the people had a say in where that money goes I guarantee inmates would have basic needs like toilet paper and clean water, which many do not.

    • @emilyviktorija9012
      @emilyviktorija9012 3 года назад +24

      @@TKUA11 Also, adding a few characters to a gravestone is not “thousands of dollars.” Nobody is asking for a first-class presidential ceremony. They’re asking to have their NAME instead of a NUMBER. They may not have family, but they may have friends who would like to visit them, and you’re only allowed to list a relative or a spouse as an emergency contact. It’s wrong. Screw your tax money, I care about human life.

He’s still alive now thanks to me, since I slipped an oxygen pump into his coffin, and I pass him food and water through a small hole every day. I can’t let him live like this any longer though, as I feel it’s slowly driving him insane. This morning when I dropped off some breakfast, he was giggling uncontrollably. I’m wondering if I should just poison his drinks to out him to sleep, or should I take him out? I’ve always had the option to take him out, but I like to keep him in there. I had a loved one that was incarcerated in 2019 and there was an inmate who passed away overnight on Christmas Eve. They found them at chow that Christmas morning and were never heard news of them again.
    The other inmates were told to, "Mind your own business", when trying to find out about the deceased inmate. Well, I would think it was their "business", since the unfortunate soul passed in their "house"!
    There was also another inmate who had been bitten by a spider on their hand and contracted a severe staff infection. No medical care was given and the inmate's hand was so swollen that their hand literally ruptured! NOT opened and drained, it exploded!! They were still left to suffer for hours in a filthy cell before medical attention was received.
    So, who's the criminal? The inmate or those in charge of their well being while incarcerated? There something definitely wrong with that scenario...
    Thanks for sharing your stories, Jess.

My Grandma was in ICU and my uncle was Brought in and taken out of the back of the hospital. No other visitors were allowed in ICU, not just our visitors, but no visitors even for the other patients. I saw an interview with a former inmate who was assigned to Hart Island during the height of the AIDS epidemic, he described mass graves, bodies just being thrown in and covered as quickly as possible and the fear that they would contact the virus from handling the bodies. Dear Jessica,
    Years ago, I was a correctional officer at McNeil Island federal penitentiary in Washington State. I lived in a house on the Island in an area referred to as four corners because it was one mile from the main prison in one direction and one mile from the prison camp in another direction. Since I lived fairly close to work, I would walk to and from work when the weather was good. On the road to the main prison about two hundred yards from my house, was the prison cemetery.
    Like you said, a very sad place. The earlier graves were buried by number and the later ones were buried by their names. Forever in prison.
    I'm glad you survived! I wouldn't want that experience for nothing. Mine was bad enough.

    This must vary by state and prison. Here in Ohio a lot of folks who pass away in prison are cremated and their cremated remains stay in a wood or cardboard box in the basement of the mortuary that agreed to get you from the morgue and cremate you. Also, anyone who passes and is not in the care of a dr. when they pass, gets an autopsy without exception. I also remember seeing a report done in another state where bodies were left to rot in mortuary basements for months and even years without being cremated because the state and the mortuary couldn't reach a deal on the cost of cremation. I got the sense that in most cases the mortuary absorbs the cost of all of this out of pure kindness because the state won't pay to have the bodies taken care of. This is just one on a long list of things that should be obvious that our injustice system needs to be thrown out and rebuilt from the ground up... In my opinion.

    That’s sick, can’t even get their names. Why? Why? I don’t get it. That number shouldn’t be the end of you, it should be the name your born with.

    I love that you ALWAYS have a story to tell or something to talk about. My grandma did time in federal prison when I was 14 for embezzlement. She’s told me her stories and it’s always nice to hear your point of view too!

    Does anyone who dont have family get the option of cremation? Or is cremation an option for anyone who dies in prison

    • @micaela2284
      @micaela2284 3 года назад +1

      The families can cremate them if they want to, but idk about anyone who gets buried at the prison. It seems like prisons kinda don't care when you die, so I would guess that the answer is no.

      No. They do not get the option. They are buried so if someone ever comes to claim the body they have a body to exhume and turn over. That is how it was explained to me when I was an officer.

    So my husband did time in a state prison here in Maine and he was granted a death bed visit when his dad had a a massive heart attack. He was transported over 3 hours to the hospital where he was shackled but allowed to spend time with his family and make medical decisions as his dads medical proxy. He was also incarcerated when I gave birth to my oldest child and his mom called the prison during the labor and he was granted a free phone call from the Sargents office to listen to the birth. Also, here in maine the prisons do not have cemeteries on the grounds anymore. If you die in a maine prison and have no family they send your body to a funeral home and you are buried in a public cemetery where the state has purchased burial plots and you are buried there. Better than the grounds I suppose..

    I DID 6 MONTHS there. You help alot of people keep going girl.much love from Lynn in Kentucky..

    My mom used to be one of the nurses at that prison. I have heard some very disturbing stories from my mother and one of her friends who was a correctional officer there. You can feel the hate, regret, and darkness before you can even see the prison.

    I've been to prison and everything she said is almost exactly how things went where I was locked up in Indiana. Sorry that sentence is rather wordy 🤐
    But prison is no joke and no part of it is fun. It's very difficult to see people die in prison, especially if they don't have family to claim them 😢
    Luckily I, too, have changed my life around, have been sober 5+ years and am working for prison reform and homelessness at the moment.
    Stay out of trouble, get help if you're addicted and seek counseling if you have any mental health issues bc you don't want to lose your freedom and be locked up.

    For someone who struggled with addiction as much as you did, you are absolutely beautiful! My Jennifer was beautiful too. She was my girlfriend who passed away recently, cirrhosis of the liver. She was only 31. I didn't even realize she drank so much, she wasn't bloated or fucked up all the time or anything. She was a living doll, just a blonde bombshell, angel of a sweet girl. I never knew. I'm just a stoner, I rarely drink, I didn't understand what was happening.

    One of my husbands jobs is burying inmates who pass and their family doesn’t “claim” them. Just sad, but if a family can’t afford it, I understand.

    Re: funerals & inmates ....
    I had a friend that was locked up for 3 years for a tragic accident in which their 16 yo bro passes away. They were scheduled for release & living in a 1/2 way house when their father unalived himself. She was due for release in 2 weeks & they wouldn't let her out early.... or even the day of... to say goodbye to her father. Not just that, from the day they found out for the next 5, they put them back in the prison in solitary on unaliving watch. Prison & compassion for humanity do not mix well together & that is simply unacceptable in modern society!!! Thank you for all you do to bring awareness Jessica. You're a mother-fucking Rockstar & don't let ANYONE tell you differently! ❤
