  • Wind-whipped wildfires raced through parts of Hawaii on Wednesday, burning down businesses in a historic town on the island of Maui, injuring several people, forcing evacuations and leading some to flee to the relative safety of the ocean, where they were rescued by the Coast Guard.
    STORY: www.10tv.com/article/news/nat...
    Fire was widespread in Lahaina Town, including on Front Street, an area that is popular with tourists, County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin said by phone early Wednesday. Traffic has been very heavy as people try to evacuate, and officials asked people who weren’t in an evacuation area to shelter in place to avoid adding to the traffic, she said. Photos posted by the county overnight showed a line of flames blazing across an intersection in Lahaina and leaping above buildings in the town, whose historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

      Valcanic molten gas coming from the several dormant vents located above Lahaina, and at least one vent located above Kihei? Also fires on top Haleakala and fires on the big island? I have footage of smoke billowing from areas where there is little to no vegetation or structures. When I cross referenced these locations to google earth every one was the location of a dormant creator or vent. Can anyone on Maui confirm or repute this?!? I live Maui many years. Even lived Halawa for those who know. But I neva c em like dis. Wind no catch on fire. Cars no burn up in street. Fire no burn everything same time. Some daylight flights might be useful if you’re allowed. I own a condo in Kahana (probably not burnt up there), and was going to be on island from October to December. Been through a similar situation in Malibu in 2018. Malibu lost 800 structures and 3000 residents moved out after that fire. I was there for the evacuation. Not as dangerous as the trip out of west Maui using the southern route but not a fun drive (5 hours to reach Santa Monica from point Dume). I’m amazed at some footage I’ve seen of people driving through fire zones in Maui. Going into the ocean with a board is better than driving through that. Some got out using the northern route, much safer than driving through fire. I’ve had an Iridium satellite phone since the 2018 fire. It was a teaching moment for me. Even a Garmin is a wise investment if an iridium is too expensive.

      First: One tactic of media is to try and downplay how bad a disaster actually is. They want people to get worked up over it, but the police and government officials usually lie about how many people actually die in disasters like these so that people don't panic, or get scared, or lose faith in the people who claim to be keeping them safe (politicians, police, etc.). Someone will claim RUclips videos as being "misinformation" then, if someone in the video says something that could jeopardize or put into question the media's portrayal of the disaster.
      Second, because of how recent this disaster happened and how fast it went, I imagine a lot of people were sensitive to seeing this kind of footage. Seeing first hand how fast the fire was spreading and having already been informed of relatives they may have lost--or people who survived and just don't want to relive the trauma--probably meant a few people had marked some of these videos as "offensive" or "shows violence" because it was too real for them.
      Just a few reasons I thought of. But I'm on your side. Just because it's sensitive material, and just because it's telling the hard truth, doesn't mean any of these videos should be taken down. There's so much that can be learned from these first hand accounts for people who weren't there to witness it.

  • @GbawlZ
    @GbawlZ 9 месяцев назад +11

    Unfortunately, it looks like Maui, and Lahaina in particular, experience bush fires with relative frequency -- they even cited "winds from Hurricane Lane" as the accelerant of wildfires in the past. Eight months ago: "Maui firefighters continue to battle brush fire near Lahaina", 1 year ago: "Maui fire crews are still working to douse a large brush fire that threatened residents in the Lahaina area on Tuesday. At last update, officials estimated the brush fire had burned about 1,200 acres. It was about 40% contained.", 3 years ago: "Shelter open at Lahaina Civic Center as Kahana Ridge brush fire rages on", 960 acres burned, 4 years ago: "Brush fire in Lahaina causing residents to evacuate."..."(24 Aug 2018) High winds from Hurricane Lane are being blamed for starting a brush fire in Lahaina on the island of Maui." It goes on and on. In fact, it sounds like they have experience with the exact causes of today's wildfires. This seems like a massive failure of local government, there should be controlled burning and other preventative measures to defend against situations like this. People are going to look to blame one person for starting this fire, which may be true, but someone tossing out a lit cigarette should not cause a massive wildfire. It takes a failure at the local government level to make it possible for a bum throwing a lit cigarette, a car crash, a housefire, etc. to cause this much damage.

    • @GbawlZ
      @GbawlZ 9 месяцев назад +6

      @@bikebudha01 No, but the local government is responsible for knowing that a bum might throw a lit cigarette, which they know from experience would historically cause wildfires in their area. Also, stop looking for an answer as far as the source of the fire is concerned, there have been countless wildfires in this exact area of 500 acres and up from various causes. The cause doesn't matter because it's clear a fire from any source is prone to becoming a full-blown wildfire in this area. At that point, yes it is the local government's fault for not managing their forested areas properly, which is probably because the idea of controlled burning on the Hawaiian islands is not popular among locals. All it takes is one internet search for you to look up every single wildfire that has taken place since 2018 alone, which reaches double digits -- that's not normal for 99% of places on Earth, all of which have fires starting regularly from all kinds of things, even arson! So yes, if this was caused by littering or arson, that person is a bad person, but then the question becomes why a litterer or arsonist was able to cause a wildfire. Dry conditions, hurricane winds from the south, and poor forest management by the local government -- only one of which can be addressed by man.

      My area sees brush fires in the Spring just after snow melt. It takes a few dry days to start having anything from cigarettes to un-tended Hay bales to spontaneously combust grass. There is also a "burn ban" until May with no fireworks, no bon fires, and no grilling on grassy areas. Now if the local area has been slacking on forest management, then that's where the failure will be pointed to first :)
      But yes if people are throwing cigarettes out the window, shame on them.

      @@IlovetreesAlot I don't read his comment that way. I live here in Hawaii and I don't have a problem with it. It's just surprise and then he offers his prayers. NOTHING wrong with that and if the OP sees it. I doubt many locals would have an issue with it either.

    I guess we'll know more as this gets investigated further and we see what they do with the land... 🤔
