    Preaching the Psalms
First, the Psalms provide a wide variety of preaching topics and themes. This book can eloquently be called "An Anatomy of the Soul, for there is not an emotion of which anyone can be conscious that is not here represented as in a mirror."
Second, the Psalms point us to Jesus. The obvious Messianic elements in the Psalms are evident as you read them. As Jesus explained after his resurrection, in Luke 24:44, he had to suffer and die: "Then He said to them, 'These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.'"
From the very beginning, the Psalms are filled with anticipation for the arrival of GOD's anointed one in Zion.
Acrostic Poems, with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, is a testament to the Psalms' structured design. These nine poems are arranged to facilitate understanding and encourage learning and memorization.
    Psalm 34
This Psalm was written by David when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed. A fugitive from Saul, David, went to the Philistine city of Gath but found no refuge there and narrowly escaped. These events are recorded in 1 Samuel 21:10-22:1, and following that event, David went to the cave at Adullam, where many desperate men joined him. This joyful and wise Psalm seems to have been written from that cave and sung in the presence of those men.
Among the Philistines, Abimelech was a title given to a king, rather than a personal name, much as the Egyptians always called their king "Pharaoh."
V1, "I will bless YAHWEH at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth."
    • David was triumphant and relieved at El Shaddai's rescue. David never stopped exalting the LORD despite his actions. He may have acted like a fool, yet he was never foolish to neglect Jesus. Our thankfulness is not to be a silent thing. Our praise should be our music.
V2, "My soul shall make its boast in YAHWEH; the humble shall hear of it and be glad."
    • "Holy Boasting!" We can boast in the attributes of Jesus, His covenant, His promises, His works, and 1000 things in addition to those, making Him incomparable, unparalleled, and matchless.
o David had to humiliate himself like a madman to escape the Philistines, so he had little to boast of because he knew without Jesus, he would've been dead.
V3-V4, "Oh, magnify YAHWEH with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears."
    • Whatever you magnify is what your life shall be!
    o "Magnify" means "become great"
o Matthew 6:22-23, "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is [h]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
    • Matthew 7:7-8, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."
V5-V7, "They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried out, and YAHWEH heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of YAHWEH in camps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them."
    • Psalm 50:15, "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me."
o Crying is an external expression of the condition of the soul
o Crying is a great stress reliever as tears have a high level of stress hormones
o Crying is humans' natural response to a range of emotions
o Crying has the benefits of self-soothing, relieving pain, stress, enhancing mood
o Humans are the only animals to cry tears
o Humans are the only animals who can communicate with Jesus
V8, "Oh, taste and see that YAHWEH is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!"
    • David tells us that we must have a personal encounter with the LORD after his own experiences of deliverance.
V9-V17, "Oh, fear YAHWEH, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of YAHEH.
Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the YAHWEH are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. The face of YAHWEH is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and YAHWEH hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles."
    • Fear is mentioned five times
    • Many of the soldiers following David were in distress, and as they were discontent, they gathered with him at the cave at Adullam. David was teaching these men his recent lessons of faith, including the fear of YAHWEH.
o Fear of YAHWEH is rooted in action, not religious feelings.
 David is saying that the fear of YAHWEH is doing right, that is, remaining obedient to His Commandments.
o “Who is the man who desires life?”
 David is teaching his men what one must do to see GOD’s blessings on their lives- to live in fear of the LORD!
V18, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
    • Psalm 51:17, “The sacrifices of Elohim are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart. These, O Elohim, You will not despise.”
o “Despise” means to raise the head loftily and disdainfully
V19-V22, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but YAHWEH delivers him out of them all. 20 -He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. YAHWEH redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.”
    • John 19:33-36, “But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.”
    Romans 8:1-17
