So happy two of the photos from my book "The Who: Concert Memories from the Classic Years, 1964 to 1976" (Schiffer 2022) were chosen for the back cover of the Civic Auditorium CDs in this box. I'm totally looking forward to this release.
Although I'm partial to The Who Sell Out, Who's Next has the greater complexity, obviously. The Who Sell Out was made during the Beatles period and The Who, like everyone else, was in that shadow. The Song is Over is one of Townshend's greatest compositions. Being on Who's Next gives it prominence, of course, but it still remains behind Baba O'RIley, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Behind Blue Eyes when this album is discussed. This unboxing was a delight, thanks!
I love these SDE box sets. Hardcore fans and collectors have been asking for these marvelous archival releases for years and its great that artist have responded .
I remember my Dad buying the CD back when I was little in the early 90’s reduced in Woolworths. I thought the wee stains were shadows of the band, so this album became known as the shadows album. I didn’t appreciate the music as a young boy but in the intervening years it has become a firm favourite. Thanks for this preview of the SDE.
The recording of Who's Next , recorded at the the Record Plant in New York City, is a different version entirely. It features Leslie West ( Moutain; West, Bruce & Lang) on lead guitar, which is very interesting. This version was scraped , and then was re-recorded in London.
Thank you for going through the box so entertainingly. I've just ordered mine. I'm mostly interested in the demos and the history book. I remember the radio play being incomprehensible! I'm not a fan of graphic novels, but if this one helps us understand the story more, then I'm willing to have a look. But the music is the most important thing, so the demos are priceless!
ordered this. can't wait. I do wish they could of added the 89 tour versions of join together and won't get fooled again on here. but the live stuff included here sounds like it will be great. again can't wait
Didn’t Pete release a limited edition box of the Lifehouse demos + radio play through his website several years ago? Ritchie Unterberger’s book Won't Get Fooled Again: The Who from Lifehouse to Quadrophenia covers this period well too.
I bought the box set. It was on Eel Pie. I just ordered the new box set and anxious to hear remixes/alternative versions of my favorite Who song Relay. Thanks for posting.
That was a real treat, as we await the release of the set. Thank you. I had tremendous sticker shock when I first saw the price, but breaking it down - not so unreasonable, and it looks like they did a spectacular job. The Lifehouse book is a dream come true. The packaging is clearly very thoughtful and looks great. The content, at first blush, is pretty comprehensive and well organized. I am beyond delighted that they included one of the SF Civic soundboards. I just wish we'd gotten both nights. The swag is cool. The graphic novel looks interesting, although certainly the least essential item, other than the original album. My only real complaint is that I hate when box sets don't include jewel boxes, as it makes it difficult to do things like grab the discs and bring them in the car. Oh, and I love that it's Who's Next / Lifehouse. Anyway, thanks again.
Impressive box with a lot of material to it. I thought the Beatles box sets were pretty in depth. Even the White Album box wasn’t this complex and that’s a double album!
As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of the original album, I am overjoyed at the Lifehouse component. It feels like we are in an alternate history. With this release, I doubt we will ever see an attempt at a Lifehouse release again because this seems like a definitive article from Pete… and I have no problem with that. It must be cathartic for him to finally have finished it (albeit in graphic novel form) under the “Who” name. Of course, It would have been better if he and Roger put it together a’la Brian Wilson’s SMiLE remake for the anniversary, but this being compiled is good enough of a final statement. Regardless, a lot of love and attention definitely went into this release as the box set is a beautiful piece of work. Thank god they didn’t just slap “remastered” on it with 100 alternative versions of Baba O’Riley and call it a day. The live and unfinished tracks here are a goldmine.
This takes the SDE slogan "Holding the music in your hands" to an amazing new level! If you're a true Who fan, you'll buy this like I did. If not, you can just wait for the Blu-ray to come out later. For the price whiners, try doing something like this yourself. With CDs going by the wayside like dinosaurs because of the idiotic vinyl revolution, we should be glad this is being made for us true fans. Otherwise, move along.
Thanks for the tour of the box set, it looks great. If it were half the price I'd probably go for it even though I've already bought 3 different releases of the album. At $350 it's a No for me. I'd be most interested in the first book to get insight into the songs. The expanded version (1995) and Deluxe Edition (2003) have a lot of the NY record plant and Young Vic recordings and some of the demos are on Pete's "Scoop" albums. The collection of demos I'd probably only play one time, same for the graphic novel and I've no use for posters and badges.
As to the Lifehouse graohic novel; while not a big fan of graphic novels, if this is the way Townshend is finally getting his vision out there, that's a big reason why I invested so much in this box. A lot of the die hard Who fans are looking for precisely that, too, I'd imagine. Many of us already have most of the demos via Townshend's own Scoop releases, and the bootlegs of the rest. Not re-mixed and mastered where they were first recorded, of course. Also, thanks to your video I saw Put the Money Down is included in the Atmos mix and 5.1 mix; I can not wait for mid-September just to throw that on and rattle the windows. They should end every video advertising this box with Daltrey screaming "Put the money down, in a tin cup". One of the all time classic Who anthems that somehow never was...
Like box sets every artist got theirs. Now it's every album. Can't wait for ten cd deluxe editions of ten cc deceptive bends. Charlie lines. Beegees main course.
I love how this looks. It's beautiful and sure I'll buy it because I'm a Who nut! However, other than the My Wife is there anything on this that wasn't already on the last Lifehouse box set or the last Who's Next remaster?
That graphic novel takes up the majority of the weight and space of the set. Plus, we're paying for the artists etc... This makes this set too expensive for me. My favorite album, by my favorite band. Think I'll keep the mysteries and wonders of my old beat up lp copy, it's done me just fine so far.
I'd like a 100% digital, nothing physical, version of these recordings and books. I'm not young, well, maybe amongst Who fans (59 y/o). But the idea of so much physical stuff to keep a hold of seems old-fashioned. Still, loved seeing your unboxing. And yes, this is the greatest music from the greatest rock band ever.
The box set looks pretty cool, i have no space for physical disc collections anymore though, my 30,000+ collection of albums is all in digital form on my server now, as this will be :)
This looks amazing, I’m not the greatest fan of the original album though some tracks are truly timeless. It wasn’t until years later that I learned that Pete compromised himself because the band and perhaps most importantly Glyn Johns didn’t get it. It’s one of those “What if’s” in modern music. The weakness of the original album was the lack of humor - which the band’s music always benefited from. I’d very much like to hear this. It’s beyond my price range unfortunately at the moment. I’ll ask my local library to get a copy and see what they say.
What an incredible set, I just wished they'd put this kind of level out with a vinyl only version obviously without the surround mixes but the books would have been nice
Isn’t the best thing about ‘who’s next’ is it’s 9 tracks of the band at their peak. Both quadrophonia and Tommy are padded out with so-so fillers. I’ll keep this and ‘live at Leeds’ in their original form
Does anyone know yet IF there are any tracks exclusive to the older sets (Expanded 1995- Deluxe 2003) that are NOT on this expansive new Super Deluxe set?? Thank you.
I have read some reviews that say the Book has pages missing, and the badges inside, have damaged the contents, which has put me off buying it unfortunately.
Don't need the memorobilia. Pass on the graphic novel. All these Pete demos aren't going to sound much better than what's out there. The San Fran concert is already out there. The Young Vic shows are average. Any hard core fan has already heard nearly everything here, just maybe not in this good of sound quality. I'm only interested in the book.
I really can’t believe they throw in a f**king graphic novel that is twice as thick as the main book and throw the discs in a flimsy folder. So most of the €300 investment goes into a comic nobody cares for and a obligatory Atmos mix as virtually no one has a high end blu ray player anymore these days. And if they have, usually not connected to a 5.1 or 7.1 let alone a Atmos set up. Lots of great MUSICAL content but without the Atmos blu ray, comic aswell as useless posters and paper crap this would had been more affordable and would had suited the age of most buyers better @SuperDeluxeEdition
I'm gonna run to the bank and see about a loan. Right now I'm having trouble paying for Biden gas and food prices. Maybe I can talk the kids into just 1 meal a day?
The who's greatest album.been waiting year's for this to come out. Look's impressive but at £250 a pop you are having a laugh so will pass.just not worth the dosh was expecting more.
Never really got into The Who. The odd couple of songs did come over ok during my teens in the 1970’s but overall I never really took to them. Nowadays, in my mid 60’s, I find Roger Daltry to be a bit of a big mouth who’d benefit from a puck in the gob. So I don’t think I’ll be retrospectively looking into their back catalogue. Don’t even know why I’m on here except to say I see that like all the other older guys, they’re trying to cash £££ in bigtime…..
Operaziome commerciale triste: nessuna novita' vera...Gli appassionati desidererebbero dei live inediti di quel periodo,ma regolarmente ci vengono negati! Vi immaginate Who's next studio e live version? Niente da fare!! Peccato.
If you are a fan you can’t ask for anything more than this. Absolutely beautiful. A collectors dream.
I think the coolest thing about these deluxe sets is when we get a look at what might have been, you truly are seeing the whole outline of a project.
So happy two of the photos from my book "The Who: Concert Memories from the Classic Years, 1964 to 1976" (Schiffer 2022) were chosen for the back cover of the Civic Auditorium CDs in this box. I'm totally looking forward to this release.
I have that book, it's fantastic.
@@terryasheim9038 Thank you Terry!
Looks like an amazing box set with great detail. Who’s Next is for me The Who’s greatest album.
Although I'm partial to The Who Sell Out, Who's Next has the greater complexity, obviously. The Who Sell Out was made during the Beatles period and The Who, like everyone else, was in that shadow. I love these SDE box sets. Hardcore fans and collectors have been asking for these marvelous archival releases for years and its great that artist have responded .
No SDE here , SDE released recently , only the Blu-ray part from this box 25 pounds !
Fantastic. This will sit well with my Tommy and Quadrophenia sets
got this last week - absolutely superb.
Happy to see a 6 minute version of "Join Together."
Looking forward to reading those books.
The recording of Who's Next , recorded at the the Record Plant in New York City, is a different version entirely. It features Leslie West ( Moutain; West, Bruce & Lang) on lead guitar, which is very interesting. This version was scraped , and then was re-recorded in London.

Greatest album and best reissue of 2023
Very nice overall detailed first look at this classic album box set. Been waiting a long time!
I’ve already ordered it, but thanks for the awesome preview!
One of my fav bands, excellent, greetings from Lisbon 🇵🇹
Thanks for this! My favorite album of all time gets an amazing Super Deluxe treatment. There is a God!
Well, I wasnt sure if I was going to buy it but now after watching this I MUST HAVE IT! Thanks for the review. Wow what a nice box-set!
Astonishing.
I'm so glad I've invested in this box. I can't wait for the release date. Thanks for a lovely detailed review.
ordered this. can't wait. I do wish they could of added the 89 tour versions of join together and won't get fooled again on here. but the live stuff included here sounds like it will be great. again can't wait

Yes!
Yes, I bought it at the time. 2001.
Got that years ago at a who gig
I bought the box set. It was on Eel Pie. I just ordered the new box set and anxious to hear remixes/alternative versions of my favorite Who song Relay. Thanks for posting.
THat's awesome. I definitely need to get my mitts on this
I really must have this box. Thanks for yet another brilliant video.
That was a real treat, as we await the release of the set. Thank you.

Excellent! Thank you! Now we just wait for our copies!
About time The Who did this boxet.
Townsend is certainly a man who takes pride in his/their legacy.
As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of the original album, I am overjoyed at the Lifehouse component. It feels like we are in an alternate history.

i ordered this plus tee shirt and got it on lay awake plan.... get it or not, don't struggle.... i wouldn't expect anything less from pete's baby....

The demos are what's always fascinated me but like you said most of this stuff is available in other formats including the Young Vic shows.
*TWO YEARS DELAYED, BUT WORTH IT!!!*
😃😃😃
What i really want is the Bluray with the 5.1 mixes. Hopefully they will eventually release that by itself like they did for Quadrophenia.
Holy cow - I'm very excited to get this, looks like they did a fantastic job!
This is simply WOW

Great Job as usual, looks great with tons of music & other content. Only the price is a little too steep for me.
Wow thanks Pete
Like box sets every artist got theirs. Now it's every album. Can't wait for ten cd deluxe editions of ten cc deceptive bends. Charlie lines. Beegees main course.
Deceptive Bends is my all time favorite album. The Who is my favorite group.😀
I would love to have this box set, but I will ultimately pass on it. The price.
Only $295 😅
Very beautiful 🤩 I will try and manifest it 😊🇬🇧🎸✨
I will go for that because of graphic novel...
music will take on vinyl version
I would love a versión of just the bluray
I love how this looks. It's beautiful and sure I'll buy it because I'm a Who nut! However, other than the My Wife is there anything on this that wasn't already on the last Lifehouse box set or the last Who's Next remaster?

Would of loved the 2 Channel Wilson mix on CD.
Do you get the lyrics with this set, by the way?
Anyone noticing discs skipping on occasion? Disc 4 the worst?
don't seem to be priced for the average joe, @ $257.00, my goodness..
“Just” $25 per CD😩🥴
10 CD? Holy smokes! Too much.
A beautiful box set of a masterpiece.... a perfect record. For me it is a desert island disc but at $ 400 Canadian.... i will have to pass.
The box set looks pretty cool, i have no space for physical disc collections anymore though, my 30,000+ collection of albums is all in digital form on my server now, as this will be :)

Most of the demos from " The Lifehouse" are already in the midst, looks great however...
Best album ever!
Looks great. Really tempting. But it's quite pricey ...
“Just $1400! ORDER NOW!!! Friendly financing available.”
What an incredible set, I just wished they'd put this kind of level out with a vinyl only version obviously without the surround mixes but the books would have been nice
Yes, a vinyl box would be fantastic!
A very nice set, but shouldn't cost more than 50% of the price they are asking.
I have Lifehouse Chronicles. Does it have contents similar to this box ?
Isn’t the best thing about ‘who’s next’ is it’s 9 tracks of the band at their peak. Both quadrophonia and Tommy are padded out with so-so fillers. I’ll keep this and ‘live at Leeds’ in their original form

Shame that the original masters are missing. A remix would give these songs a fresh breath of air.
Looks fantastic but way out of the price range of regular mortals. Shame’s there’s no cut down version.
That's a great boxset, but I'll pass for a Quadrophenia boxset
Quadrophenia already has a box set
Got the album ,this is too expensive for me so will give it a miss
You have very handsome hands.
Money grap by record companies. I stick with the original album.
That's it spend a load more money. The album stands on its own without all this tripe.
NAH. With half the original band gone I will take all of this "TRIPE", keep em comin.
The cd sleeves look a bit flimsy
At least they come in sleeves! Often you just get them slid bare into the slots which marks the cd’s.
Save yourself a lot of money and buy a copy of Odds and Sods.
It would be wonderful to have BUT....with a cost of living crisis at the moment.....
I would pay for the books the music, though I can find anywhere
I really can’t believe they throw in a f**king graphic novel that is twice as thick as the main book and throw the discs in a flimsy folder. So most of the €300 investment goes into a comic nobody cares for and a obligatory Atmos mix as virtually no one has a high end blu ray player anymore these days. Lots of great MUSICAL content but without the Atmos blu ray, comic aswell as useless posters and paper crap this would had been more affordable and would had suited the age of most buyers better @SuperDeluxeEdition
Then stream it, bro.
😯
Good Lord. The Who sell out - again!
I'm gonna run to the bank and see about a loan. Right now I'm having trouble paying for Biden gas and food prices. Maybe I can talk the kids into just 1 meal a day?
The who's greatest album.been waiting year's for this to come out. Look's impressive but at £250 a pop you are having a laugh so

Who can afford this???
Prepare to be confused and disappointed.

Please correct to DALTREY! You're prohibited from misspelling his name for any reason whatsoever! #episcpellingfail
Operaziome commerciale triste: nessuna novita' vera...Gli appassionati desidererebbero dei live inediti di quel periodo,ma regolarmente ci vengono negati! Vi immaginate Who's next studio e live version? Niente da fare!! Peccato.
Great album but surely overrated, quadrophenia is next level content.
STAND ALONE BLURAY IS ALL I WANT.
Wont ever be released as a stand alone.
Tommy & Quadrophenia were released as a stand alone after a Deluxe Box was done !
