I appreciate your in-depth reviews like Paul does on SDE. Universal Music has given fans the holy grail of Who albums. True fans like myself wanted this. The Lifehouse saga has always been a mystery and I cherish my new box set to get involved in the whole back story. I enjoy "holding the music in my hands" while enjoying the experience. Others should just stop whining and move along. No one is twisting anyone's arm or holding a gun to your head. Try creating this massive gift yourself for the same price point. This is not the "cash grab" it will become when it goes out of print and weasels on eBay jack the price out of the stratosphere.

Outstanding review! Who’s Next is one of my favorite albums, containing my top favorite rock track “Behind Blue Eyes”. For me personally, listening to Steven Wilson’s glorious Atmos mix was well worth the exorbitant price of the box set. I hope the stand-alone happens. Everyone who loves this music deserves a chance to have the Blu-ray in their collection.

I broke down and bought the box set. Working my way through it. So far feel that it was well worth it. The live recording from the Vic is a nice treat. Listened to the Atmos version of the album. Amazing!!. One of my best, if not the best, surround experience of a rock album. Thanks for the review. PS I too agree that the Atmos version should be offered standalone. Just ordered DSOTM so we will see how that stands up in Atmos. Thanks for the review .

I intend to order the stand-alone PF DSOTM 50th BD, too. The set is cool, but exorbitantly priced! The solo BD will do me just fine! Same will probably happen if Who's Next is offered as a stand-alone. The big box is cool, but not $300 cool!

I wasn't going to spend the money on this also waiting for the stand alone. My wife surprised me with this for an early anniversary present. I would agree this is a tremendous mix and amazing sounding disc. There are just certain points in album that are just a surprise. The ending mix of This Song Is Over was one for me was the keyboard middle section of Won't Get Fooled Again leading in to Moons drum solo, just amazing! I cranked my stereo louder for this one than any other album I've played on my system and it was just perfect. I'm 54 and have been a major Who fan since I first saw the Kids Are Alright movie when I was 10 yrs old. But the last 10-15 yrs I've not been as big as fan. I think too much of the same songs constantly over played . Well that will now change! I do also have the Quadraphenia Blu-ray and it too is amazing. I've always been a huge Entwistle fan but both these discs really show the brilliance of Keith Moon in that era! Also extremely appreciative of the bonus tracks! Join Together in surround, who would ever thought?

At this point it's pretty easy to find this for under $200. Still expensive but much better than $300 or so when it came out.

These huge sets tend to tank in price if one waits. Occasionally they sell out, but I think it's usually a good bet to wait.

Thanks again for this amazing insight. Being a huge Who fan, Who's Next always was sort of a holy grail to get in the SDE format. However, the price is significant. Significant enough to wait and see if I'm able to get it tens of euro's beneath what's currently being asked. As for the bonus tracks, I've heard them digitally and was blown away by the quality. I allready had and earlier CD with Lifehouse material (with highlights such as Mary, Greyhound Girl and especially Teenage Wasteland), but this is even more complete. Two points of criticism: the 2022 remaster is lacking on most of levels compared to the 1995 remix, which is more alive and detailed. I even found it to be 'muffled' on certain moments, which reminded me of a 2005 remaster from the 'couch album' (Crosby, Stills & Nash). For instance, the synths on 'The Song Is Over' are buried in the mix, while the 90s cd presents it more upfront and engaging. I experienced the same with other songs. Another thing is that I love 'Naked Eye' (the Odds & Sods version) and it grew on my as my favorite Who song, next to The Song Is Over and 21. That definitive version is missing on this set, although the other Naked Eye versions are interesting to hear. On the other side, maybe the new remaster needs time to settle in, just as the Crosby, Stills Nash remaster I mentioned above. Last but not least: the Steve WIlson mixes are what I'm mostly curious off. Not just the Atmos, but also to see (hear) if the stereo remix will better both the 2022 remaster and 1995 remix. I hope it will. Anyway, good times to enjoy surround sound. Besides this release, I'm still looking out for the Mind Games box set (love that album), which I hope will include a nice DTS / Atmos mix. The same goes for future Elton John reissues. ~Marjet

Great review. Just what I wanted to hear about, that is the Bluray. I have the Tommy and Quadrophenia 5.1 discs. I don't have Atmos so what flavor of 5.1 mix is on the Bluray, DTS-HD MA, Dolby Tru, or PCM?

All I care about honestly is the Blu-Ray. I"m not the biggest Who fan so I couldn't really care about the live shows and bonus tracks. I'm not holding out for a blu-ray only release like the Pink Floyd one. But great review.

6:08 We've all listened to mixes from digitally extracted stems. Yeah, it's never *as good* as multitrack masters or raw recordings, but when the alternative is just not having an immersive mix of the the content... 100% of the time, yeah, do the best with what you've got and get it out to the public.

Great album, but just too much to ask ALL WHO fans to pay. The fans are the people who have supported the band through the years, yet the band finds they need to squeeze out every greedy penny from those of us who have been with them. JETHRO TULL just released a BRILLIANT 8 disc boxed set for under $80. This is 4 times as much. Just shows how little the band respect the TRUE FANS.. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I hear wildly different reports on Atmos mixes. I think there is just great variation in how all our systems perform and handle certain sounds. I'm sure the Atmos mix sounds incredible on Wilson's system and it sounds plenty nice on mine. I actually perceive a bit more drum clarity than in the stereo mix. Glad you're finding it decent though!

I have listened to the ATMOS version of Who's Next on Apple Music twice now on my 7.2.4 setup. Everything sounded great except for "Bargain" which sounds drenched in reverb. I know that track is an upmix and not multitracks. Does it sound like that on the Blu-ray too?

"The band" is now Pete & Roger. Roger generally has no say in these decisions. Pete doesn't need the money. UMG is providing fans a true gift. All price whiners move along who aren't fans in the first place.

Got to listen to the stereo elements recently-
Lifehouse will always be a meme, grand and underbaked and unimplemented. Justice for Jumbo, Lifehouse's alleged villain!
The box is okay I guess; the properly stereo version of Time is Passing sounds awesome which is very important given that 1998 Odds n Sods only had its left channel. New 1971 versions of Water and Naked Eye and such are neat, and it's fun enough listening to studio noodling from the Record Plant and London. Really though, it's nothing essential or very new if you're a nut like me and already had an assembled version of Lifehouse based on the Chronicles box. Also the new Stereo mix is compressed as hell, with a dynamic range average of 8...

    • @lifeinsurround

@@lifeinsurround I have not, I hope the tapes are complete, unlike Ottawa 69 on Tommy where they subbed in some Swansea 76 tracks... otherwise the SF 71 show in particular should be a good reason for this box to exist, legendary show!
