Morning Coffee: Are You Drinking it too Soon after Waking? - Thomas DeLauer
Humans are guided by the 24-hour hormonal cycle referred to as the circadian clock, which is preprogrammed into us genetically and although we can mess with our cycles through lifestyle habits, the major factor in its regulation is sunlight
One of the things that this clock controls in humans is the release of cortisol which makes us feel alert and awake
The peak production of cortisol occurs between 8-9 am (under normal circumstances) - this means that at the time that many people are having their first cup of coffee, their bodies are actually "naturally caffeinating" the most effectively
The times of peak cortisol levels in most people are between 8-9 am, 12-1 pm and 5:30-6:30 pm
Therefore, timing your coffee breaks between 9:30-11:30 and 1:30 and 5:00 takes advantage of the dips in your cortisol levels when you need a boost the most
Chronopharmacology can be defined as the study of the interaction of biological rhythms and drug action
One of the most important biological rhythms is, as mentioned, your circadian clock - this endogenous 24 hour clock alters your physiology and behavior in variety of ways but it can also alter many properties of drugs including drug safety (pharmacovigilance), pharmacokinetics, drug efficacy, and possibly drug tolerance
Fun fact: In studies, by creating an "island" in the brain by methodically cutting the hypothalamus away from any surrounding tissue, the circadian clock was completely lost
So drinking your morning coffee at 8am isn’t really the best time due to the circadian rhythm of cortisol production at that time
Drug tolerance is an important subject, especially in the case of caffeine since most of us overuse this drug
Therefore, if we are drinking caffeine at a time when your cortisol concentration in the blood is at its peak, you probably should not be drinking it
In the morning then, your coffee will probably be the most effective if you enjoy it between 9:30 and 11:30am, when your cortisol levels are dropping before the next spike
Published in The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, researchers analyzed how caffeine disrupts sleep when consumed at different points in time during the day
The volunteers included 12 healthy men and women who were normal sleepers and regularly consumed moderate amounts of caffeine
During the study, they maintained their normal sleep routines with bedtimes from 9 pm to 1 am, and wake times of 6 am to 9 am - they slept somewhere between 6.5 to 9 hours each night without napping during the daytime
Participants were given a fixed dose of caffeine, along with placebos, at 0, 3, and 6 hours before bedtime - 400 mg of caffeine was administered, which is equivalent to around four cups of coffee
Researchers monitored signs of sleep disturbance using a sleeping monitor and found:
At 0, 3, and 6 hours before bedtime, caffeine had a significant effect on sleep disturbance - even caffeine consumed 6 hours before bed affected sleep amounts by over an hour
Sleep quality was diminished when caffeine was consumed at all three points during the day. Compared to the placebo, there was a significant amount of time spent awake during the night, including when caffeine was consumed 6 hours before.
However, the perception of caffeine’s effect on the body was not a direct measure of how it affected sleep
When caffeine was consumed 6 hours before bed, they did not report any effect to their sleep quality - the sleep monitor showed a different story, though
Concluded that we shouldn’t fully rely on our own perceptions to judge how caffeine is really affecting us, especially when it comes to sleep

For people in a hurry, a quick sum up:
    - Drink caffeine 1 hour after waking up.
    - Drink caffeine 1 hour after lunch (but at least 6 hours before bedtime for better sleep).
    - After that, less caffeinated drinks for better sleep.

Well, it depends if you wanna consider the fact that the avocado industry is really dirty. In Mexico (motherland of avocado) it is run by cartels. Yes, people get murdered over avocados. In Chile (another big producer of avocado) the state has gone so far as privatizing water and forcing farmers of their land to grow avocado. Remember: In the Native Mexican language Nahuatl "Avocado" literally means testicle. Always treat testicles with respect.

Absolutely agree Thomas! I usually wait until 11:00 am and it works great for me. I don't "Need" it to wake up - I hydrate and take a shower in the morning and then wait 2 hours to get my coffee and it feels great... Awesome video :)

Man Thomas, you're looking wayyyy better than in the last few years. AMAZING transformation. You've been able to help me with explaining fasting to others with HARD SCIENCE. Including my own physique. I'm a hard gainer, very active metabolism, too much cardio. So ya now I'm making gains. 1.5lbs - 3lbs of muscle gained per month. 3 months in already went from 142-152. First 2 months were mostly eating and little training. Last 4 weeks, lots of training.

Thomas! I’m telling you you’re right on point with Dr Amen Ra! Coffee & Green Tea/Matcha are staples in his diet. His protocol calls for drinking coffee each morning after a 30-90 min cardio session, just like how you’re saying to wait an hour before drinking the coffee! His book also goes into the details of the importance of the circadian rhythm and benefits of timing the ingesting of his nutraceuticals. You can donate to his website to get a pdf of his work!

It's crazy you just posted this. I did an experiment that ended today. I tested my 14 hour fasted GKI while drinking coffee regularly. I then got off caffeine for a week and a half. Today, I drank 2 cups of coffee while 14 hours fasted and tested my GKI (same time in the day) and it was half of what it was when I was drinking coffee regularly.
I'm assuming the caffeine, while caffeine sensitive, generated a more aggressive catecholamine response that stimulates lipolysis and spiked ketone production.

I wake up, & by the time it takes for me to get moving. I take the dogs out run them & feed them, I put my coffee on & it's about an hour by default cuz I can't move very fast when I first get up. And on the two days a week I do fullbody time under tension work out. It falls in my last hour of fasting. Which fall's in line with what you've been saying for , optimal fat burning. I've lost enough fat that I now can tell much quicker how smaller adjustments will affect me. The one thing that really has made a very noticeable difference is I stopped taking any pill or oil form of supplaments till after I break my fast. The last bit of belly fat around the bellybutton is melting away. You know your stuff Thomas. 90lbs gone, I'm disabled & have abs never had them visible in my life. Now at 48 in pain 247 I look great.

There was study done revealing that Americans are caffeine-addicted and sleep deprived like no other time. I can vouch for that. I used to consume coffee from the moment I woke, to the momemt I went to bed. My sleep scedule and circadian rhythm were so out of whack. For roughly 15 years, I drank very strong Coffee. Developed sleep apnea, heart arrhythmias and insomnia. It was bad. All due to too much coffee. Now, I occasinaly drink 1 maybe 2 cups in the morning. My Cardiologist said I was harming myself by consuming so much caffeine.

Perfect timing with this video Thomas. I've been on keto for 12 weeks and since watching your videos, for the last 6 weeks I've increased my coffee to 3 cups a day. During the past 3 weeks I've noticed that my urine is darker than normal, I've had inflammation and muscle aches in my legs and a touch of gout in my right foot. I stopped drinking coffee and within 2 days all the of those issues went away. I'll try 1 coffee a day in the afternoon and see what happens. I have been eating my daily limit of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. I've also been taking my potassium and magnesium supplements. I feel certain it was fatigue because I was feeling sleepy during the day and the achy muscles. Everything seems spot on again. Maybe that amount of coffee just didn't agree with me.

I'd say bad because of the sucralose at least, I know studies suggest it's safe but they can miss things or be biased. People forget science never changes, only our perception and understanding of it does, studies aren't science they're just part of the scientific process and can be flawed, even on purpose by corrupt people.
I think it's very possible that it can trick gut bacteria into thinking it's sugar so it feeds on it, and then they die. It can even trick you and cause an insulin response. I don't trust that and other things in energy drinks like Bang.

Idk it just makes sense in a primitive Nordic way. Where would a rugged primal Nordic man such as myself get his morning drink in the wild? Well that pristine Glacial run off of course, full of life giving microbes of Jesus to make a Northman hardy & robust. After a good warm nights sleep it's good to the rested innards & entrails to cool off from this digestive steep. Cool, crisp & refreshing!

Big fan! FYI-I've been researching for a sweetener for coffee. My research found that 0 calories can have up to 4 carbs per serving without showing it on the label. Many sweeteners are sneaking in vegetable sweeteners (fructose) and calling it "all natural". The liquid sweeteners usually have 11% alcohol in them which is 22 proof (wine is 10-12) and 4 carbs.

Question on Supplement Timing: When doing keto and intermittent fasting, I've been taking many supplements (Mg, Fish Oil, Krill Oil, Vit C, Vit, E, B-12, D3, Co-Q10, Turmeric, etc) all at once, upon breaking the fast post-workout ... thinking that the body may be more sensitive to these at that time and make better use of them. Is it perhaps better to space these out, say, over a 6-hr. feeding window? Your thoughts/recommendation?

Cool! I have been doing the hour after I wake up for a while now, all because I take Vitamin C the minute I wake up (on an empty stomach), and I just instinctively know that I want at least an hour to pass after I have taken it before having Coffee. Now I see I am getting a double benefit! Cool!

What is the benefit of vitamin C immediately after waking?

    • @NorthernThaiGardenGuy
      @NorthernThaiGardenGuy 5 лет назад +5

@@robertcronin6603 Vitamin C is water soluble. So it is best absorbed on an empty stomach when you are well hydrated. Get a couple of good pees in the morning, and then drink a couple of glasses of water down, and take it then, but most importantly - Vitamin C competes with Glucose to enter in to the same cell receptor (called GLUT 1). In the presence of both - the cell will always take the sugar over the C, and you basically just wasted your dose and will urinate it out. Your blood sugar levels are usually lowest first thing in the morning, so that is why I take it then (before I have had anything to eat and especially before having any kind of sugar). Then one hour after I have taken it I have my coffee for the day (3 cups with butter and coconut oil).

I respect & trust your research and presentation and hope you can share your knowledge of how Serrapeptase can benefit those dealing with heart disease, inflammation, arthritis, and how the supplement can eat away dead tissue but leave the alive tissue in humans. But you have had different videos about when to eat what to get the most benefit. For example what to eat when you break a fast or the meal before your fast. Would you make a 24 hour eating cycle video where you explain the best time to eat each item and why. Explain the best time and way to break your fast, when you have caffeine, how to eat during your eating window and what to eat before starting your fast.

I drink it black after that, but would like to know what it is that triggers the midday cortisol increase as most days our big meal is midday. TY!
