    They made a total of 92 I believe, windowed 1957 sedan deliveries. There is a guy in Santa Rosa Ca. who has the only completely restored example in existence. It's won many awards and is the best restored '57 Chevy that I've ever seen.

    I knew a guy in Palmer Alaska 15-20 years ago that had a boss 302 that he special ordered and bought new in Anchorage.
    I think it was a 69 but don’t remember for sure.
    He was a mechanic at the ford dealership at the time.
    Said the engine lost oil pressure and blew up on the glen hwy while commuting home when the car was still pretty new.
    Ford warrantied the engine, he installed the new one himself at the dealer and got paid to do it.
    I think he still had the original engine in the corner of his shop as well. Can’t remember for sure.
    Car was all original, paint, interior, everything, and in immaculate condition.
    He daily drove an 88 thunderbird turbo coupe with an auto that he also bought new and was immaculate.
    I had one of those cars, and a parts car. That’s how we met. Sold him some parts.
    Nice guy. Loved hearing his stories. Don’t remember his name.

    Love that Boss. My old buddy had one just like that in grabber blue but, it had the shaker hood, rear louvers, Toploader 4 speed, 431 Detroit Locker. I remeber when he got on it. I would see the front top of the right fendor flex from the touqure, sitting in the passenger seat when he banged the gears.
    That 57 was cool too. I have a 55 Nomad since 1974 and I'm building a 55 California framed 210 2 door wagon into a Nomad. I'm grafting in the roof and will be fabbing all the other parts to made a Nomad. It's a retirement project which will be interesting. Great videos keep them coming.

    The window delivery is something. I had a 57 as my first car and I knew about the Sedan Delivery's but not these. I didn't know the horn rings were not there either. So cool. Mine was a 6 and 3 on the tree too, The guy I sold it to put in a 400 SBC and 350 tranny. I should have bought the Engine and tranny off him and I sold it too cheap I had put a new head on it, and it ran great.. Hind sight is 20.20. Back in 1960, our family had pretty much the same vehicle as that 57 Chevy in the Pontiac version. Ours was bare bones 2 door 1956. We had a back seat, two piece tailgate and a V8. We had a bread man who delivered bakery products to our house at the time. He drove a 1956 Ford 2 door delivery with windows. I learned my driving skills on that Pontiac when I was 13. My best friend owned a brand new orange 1970 Boss Mustang. I got to drive it a couple of times. Sweet ride. His father was driving it one day when he spun out of control and wrapped it around a tree. The car had less than 5k miles on it. Sad day.

    My high school shop teacher had a 55 chev sedan delivery with only 1 rear side window, it was from the forestry service, so the driver could look out the right rear to see fires better. It was a very clean and rare car.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 5 лет назад

      jerryw66 … Actually the reason behind windows on one side was to eliminate the blind spot, same as a van with glass in the side cargo doors. If you have ever driven a van without side glass then you know what I mean. My 64 Corvan has no side glass and I am looking to get some doors from a Greenbrier to solve that problem. I drive it regularly so I'm worried more about safety than staying original.

    • @jerryw6699
      @jerryw6699 5 лет назад

      @@rupe53 Like I said, the right rear had glass so the driver, who would have been employed by the forest service, could observe the forest more easily and spot fires. There was an article in Chevy magazine a few yrs ago about these vehicles, it was titled the rarest chevy or something of that nature.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 5 лет назад

      @@jerryw6699Yes, I understand your point, but the same holds true for the right side "blind spot" on all vehicles with left hand drive. Now from a manufacturing view point, they make the body side panels in one piece. If the vehicle needs side glass then they punch out that area. The 2 steps are a costly process so I can see why the budget model might only get one side with glass. Plain and simple, the side glass is for visibility, but glass on one side is a cost cutting measure. I'd bet good green dollars the same committee used this idea when they dreamed up the 3 door Suburban in the 60s. Another cost cutting measure!

    That 6 Cylinder in the Sedan Delivery 1957 150 is a292CU IN - common GM engine in Government equipment. between 165 or 195 HP. Depending on the Carburator. How you tell between the 235 and the 292 is that the 235 has bolts through the top of the valve cover, while 292 had bolts around the flange of the valve cover. It is a truck motor - 292.

      I had one as well Clinton. There was a guy in my college (1970) that had a killer '55 Sedan Delivery with a V8. It was a high dollar build that I could never afford, but I fell in love with it. A year later I was driving home when I saw a '55 Chevy wagon sitting under a tree. The owner was an insurance salesman that I knew, but I had never seen this car. Long story short it was a 2-dr station wagon 6-cylinder 3-on-the-tree with 150 trim and a radio block out. It had been sitting there under the tree next to his house for a year or two. I ended up giving him $150 for the car, picked up a new battery at Western Auto, splashed a little gas to prime the carburetor and drove it home. I added a radio, cassette player and a Hurst Shifter and drove it for about 15 years. It was a great road car, so I named it Trippin'.

    When I first opened my body shop in 1990 the first two cars in the shop for restoration was a 1957 sedan delivery with metal on the sides instead of windows. I don't know what drive train it had from the factory but when I got it the mechanical work had already been done and it had a GM 427 crate engine that had been re-worked and was 450 hp. It had a 4 speed with a hurst shifter and a camaro rear axle. The suspension had been updated and had power disc brakes and power/ quicker steering box. Also it had A/C, power windows and cruise control. I painted it a deep red metallic that I think was a new chevy truck color that year. It was a very nice ride when it was finished. Personally I would have preferred a 700R4 transmission but it wasn't mine so I didn't have much choice. The second car (same owner) was a 1969 (not 1970) 302 Boss. It was all stock and had been restored but not good enough for the owner. It needed new quarters and the rest was just remove the bad body work and refinish it in the original off white. He sold them both as soon I was finished to a classic car dealer in Florida for a very nice profit.

    The government used to be great for old well maintained cars & trucks since they use to keep them until they were about worn out. When I was in the Air Force in the early 70's it wasn't unusual to see 15 - 20 year old cars being used on the bases and most were plain jane ones like that.

    I met a guy last August around Mammoth cave that had one of those Chevy. He called it a business man car. He had it fully restored.

    There is one of those Ford Delivery Cab vehicles sitting in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. It is very cool that he does have one to restore.

    Back in 1978, I stayed for a few days in Visalia, Ca. My friend's father was a keen member of the CAP and said we should go up in a plane- my first and last flight in a light aircraft- we did all these practise landings in a training circuit- that was fun (not)! Anyway, I did notice at this little airport there were some very old trucks dotted around that looked semi-derelict- they were from the 40s. I often wonder what happened to them.

    So these have turned more away from barn find to personal collection find... I don't hate it. The barn find thing is wore out and needs a rest. Everyone thinks they've found a barn find... No it's in a garage and the owner is still alive and knows it's there and even fires it up every once in awhile. Just an old hot rod with storage boxes piled on it. Everyone's got one of those. No but seriously I love to see other people's old hot rods even if they aren't really barn finds and I thoroughly enjoy Tom's knowledge about cars and love for them.

    Back in the early 80’s I had one of those 57 glass side deliveries. It was a six with three speed and had the wood floor behind the seats. It had been a military pool car. My mom made me get rid of it or she’d call the scrapper to come pick it up. I’d already lost half a dozen cars that way so I gave it to a buddy who’s little brother promptly broke all the windows out of it.

    I have never seen a sedan delivery with windows in the back...Growing up in Vancouver BC all the ice cream truck guys drove them though the neighbourhood. All 55-56 as I remember......cheers

    Hi there, just looked at Ford T town car vid , I have a bro in law who has restored a 1914 T town car , gorgeous car , but an accident stopped him driving it so he sold it , one of two known down here in New Zealand . Took him years to restore it , made all the main body panels from old patterns of the original.

    Wow the Merc pickup is beautiful!!! for a truck that has had a hard life it's still in great condition and the sound!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ The little midget racer looks to have essex chassis rails. Something I'd also like to own if I had space.

    Excellent video. Love the back stories. I wish you had, had a chance to talk about the C4 Corvette, and what looked like maybe a C3 Corvette under the sheet. Those stock C4 "Saw Blade" wheels are by far my favorites. Looking forward to the next "Barn Find" adventure.

    The Mercury flathead is larger than a Ford's flathead. The Mercury has 255 cubic inches vs. Ford's 235. The crankshaft is stroked. Also the tailgates are extremely rare and valuable here in Canada.

    The Canadian military had green Mercury pickups, but I think they had unique serial numbers that identified them as being built for the military.
