- RPR test is a blood test used to screen you for syphilis.
It works by detecting the nonspecific antibodies that your body produces while fighting the infection.
Syphilis is a STI caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum.
Why the Test is Performed
The RPR test can be used to screen for syphilis
The test is also used to see how treatment for syphilis is working.
If you are a sexually active adult with HIV/AIDS, you may need the RPR test at least once a year
Why do I need this test?
You may need this test if you have ever been sexually active and show symptoms of syphilis... symptoms may include:
Small, painless sores at the place where syphilis invaded your body
Skin rash
Fever
Swollen lymph glands
Hair loss
Headaches
Weight loss
Results & Interpretation
A negative or nonreactive result means you don't likely have syphilis.
Shortly after infection, a test may not yet show any antibodies. This is known as a false negative
Positive results are given as a ratio in titers.
If the screening test is positive, the next step is to confirm the diagnosis with a more specific test for syphilis, such as FTA-ABS
