It must be the worst thing in the world to loose a child. As the mother of five children my heart gos out to this lady, it’s easy to judge her and her actions with hindsight but as any parent knows it is the hardest job in the world being a parent.
My God as a mother myself I would've called the police immediately when I saw that CREEP in my daughter's room the following morning and made sure that CREEP was arrested. Better still I wouldn't of allowed a stranger on the property, let alone stay there. What a CREEP
Her mother could have prevented her murder of she responded to finding a grown man sleeping in her daughters bed like a normal person by going to the police. I keep hearing about her mother's intuition but sending a warning email and not taking his response to the police is the very reason Carly got killed.
Yes the not going to the police when she believed him to be a predatorHis behaviour was creepy I so many ways from the onset Red flags 🚩 everywhere He molested Carly inthe home and asked for sex with her!!
I think I would have had him arrested when i found him on my daughters bed....but I have a husband on my side, poor Carlys mum was in a vulnerable position, so basically he preyed on her too. Such a sad story
She absolutely should have reported him and had him arrested. That said, it is quite understandable if she did not want to put her daughter through police interviews, The invasive physical examination that takes place after sexual assaults or abuse is reported, and a trial for being sexually assaulted. That process alone is traumatizing to victims and often times these reports and getting filed directly into the trashcan. Regardless, we all have to report if we are able. It has nothing to do with “letting the bad guys win” but is about creating a culture that supports victims, listens to their voices, and clearly articulates such experiences as wrong and violation. At the very least, creating a paper trail on these fuckers means that when it happen again authorities can clearly see the pattern of predatory behavior which creates the legal basis to push harder into investigating and pushing for charges.
I just heard Carly's mother speak today at the Crimes Against Children Conference in Dallas, TX. It's unbelievable what she's been able to do. She's trying to get a version of Carly's Law passed in Texas right now. The goal is to give law enforcement the ability to make arrests when someone is soliciting a child, but BEFORE a child is abused. Everyone criticizing her for letting that guy stay needs to take a step back. Think about well you know the parents of your children's friends before your child gets to spend the night. Or really, think about anyone around your child when you're not supervising them. How well do you really know them? It's easy to pat ourselves on the back and say, "It couldn't happen to us or our children, because we're too smart." But it absolutely can.
That's amazing what Carly's mom is doing and I love that it has made it all the way to the states. I wish people would stop blaming Carly's mom - she's a victim too.
Hey, don't forget, this all happened when the internet was in its infancy. Very few parents had any grasp of what their kids were doing online and who they were "meeting" on the web. Me and my friends used to sneak off to the public library to get onto chat sites to talk to strangers for the thrill of it. We'd laugh it off when someone started soliciting us. But it happened multiple times in a 1hour timeframe and we did say we were 12 or 13 or however old. Nobody knew what we were up to. We never told our parents and they had no idea. Only thing that kept us safe was that we just knew we couldn't trust anyone and never would have met up with anyone from the web. But then again, we just spent an odd hour here and there giggling at the messages we got. We were lucky never to have done this at home, alone, where we could have met real predators who could have gotten into our heads. I'm about the same age as Carly would have been now. I could never blame Sonia. Even for not reporting the things her daughter told her happened with "Shayne" to the police. I'd like to think that I would report it, if I ever were in her shoes, but would you people? Would you have your daughter go through having to discuss that with officials who might imply she's to blame etc?
As morbid as this may sound, I just shared this case with my daughter so her 13 y.o. daughter, my granddaughter, could listen to this. She has been repeatedly caught trying to message adult men on the internet, believing nothing bad could ever happen to her.
That strikes terror inmy heart 13 years old! She will definitely need guidance You did the right thing Unfortunately most young people think they’re invincible and live in some safety bubble and doubled with hormones risk taking behaviour and rebellious actions a super dangerous cocktail I wish her all the best Wondering what the hell is wrong with these men???!!!!!

Port Elliot is my hometown. A tiny little seaside town. Horseshoe Bay is where as a primary school child we visited every summer to learn how to swim and meet Father Christmas, eat ice cream (Christmas is summer here) and have innocent fun. The realization that a murder had happened in this beautiful innocent space was soul destroying. Now I only ever think of Carly when I think of Horseshoe Bay. 'Lady bay'was the name of the small beach where Carly was found. I think of you often Carly ❤❤
How on earth did they fall for this? This was a carnival of red flags! Sonia failed to protect her daughter from this OBVIOUS predator with her appalling permissive parenting. You can’t be a best friend to your daughter. You have to be a mother one who protects and watches over her. Parents today are so afraid to tell their kids NO you can’t do that.
So if Shane/aka Gary Newman (which I find hilarious - instantly thought of the one-hit wonder guy Gary Newman, "Cars", 1980), bypassed Sonya by calling Carly on the home phone, I'd have to assume he was pretending to be Brandon - how did he pull off the voice, I guess he had his son make the call & he coached him on what to say? So this would have to mean Carly never even spoke on the phone or online with "Brandon"? All the more reason for NOT being "in love" with this guy. So she met up with "Brandon" (17), knowing his dad "Shane" was going to be there, too, as a "chaperone" of sorts? She didn't say right out of the gate when she saw the son, "Oh, you don't look like you did online"???
I cant even imagine the guilt Carly's mother must go through every day of her life. That she is doing something positive speaks volumes of her. Shame on every person who berates her. Shame.
Shame indeed ..The mum will forever regret her inaction of not making a statement to police about that man being on her daughter’s bed , in her home with mums ok. Possibly this thing may have been stopped before it killed..
It’s all easy in hindsight. You have to think of the times, the culture and the fact that interest crimes were not in the spotlight. I think Sonia was trying to keep her daughter close to her by not pushing her boyfriend away. Same for the bed incident. How many kids run away to be with their first “love”? As for how Carly dressed when she left, same argument. Kids often do things that seem strange to adults. My parents thought I may be a Devi worshiper when I wore a Rush T-shirt. I think Carly’s choice of dress was self expression. Just a young woman blossoming. She definitely did not deserve to be murdered for this. She should have had a chance to learn and grow, like most of us. I’m sure that ALL of the blame belongs to the monster that stalked and murdered her.

New Subscriber, Very glad I found this channel. Very underrated. This story is so heartbreaking..29 years is far 2 short of a sentence for this monster. Public torture sessions weekly till he dies is more like it. And, to drag your son into it is more than sick. It's as if not only did he use him to lure her out, but he wanted him to continue this horrific behavior after he gets 2 old, or passes on. What a screwed up bastard!! Rest in piece sweet girl.
@@marylouise2207 First off, can you read,? It was 7+months ago that I even commented this. Secondly, fuck you!! Yes I think my above mentioned form of punishment should be considered. Yes, if I lost a loved one to murder I'd want the full force of the law to come into play; but that wouldn't include weekly (how weird) public torture. Only a very disturbed mind could envisage such a scenario. Seriously, I'd seek help if I were you. The fact that you made the comment some months ago is irrelevant; RUclips videos are permanent therefore people encounter them for the first time continually; and since you clearly haven't changed your mind regarding your initial post, you can hardly claim a time lapse as a reason for lack of response.
@@marylouise2207 The timeline IS relevant. Because in 8 months or so I had actually forgotten what I commented, and what this video was even about!! Now mind you it refreshed my memory when I read your response, and the title of this vid. Not an excuse,( I don't need an excuse for my opinion) just an explanation. I still stand by my idea of public torture. You act like it's so barbaric. And above you..Yet I can walk into a planned parenthood and have a living human vacuumed out of my uterus whilst it's heart is beating.. Oh and I can also stand outside of any number of prisons and celebrate the executions they hold on the regular. Those things are perfectly legal. My entire point is, if you take a life in an extremely violent coldhearted way, you should pay with your life in the same manner. Same amount of pain of which you inflicted upon your innocent victim should be put upon you. Maybe if the Chris Watts, and Jeffrey Dahmers saw that happening to their fellow criminals they'd think twice about murdering..Obviously this criminal justice system is not working. But IM the awful person for having the guts to admit I'd take part in it though...lol Please spare me the "you're weird, seek help" bullshit. We as a human race have been killing each other for thousands of years, we're not going to stop because you are TRIGGERED. I will admit that since I lost a family member to a brutal murder that possibly some of this is anger, or vengeance. But I'm sure I'd still be A ok with this ideal form of punishment beforehand.
@@kristenjustkristen9462 For your information, I believe abortion should be outlawed, therefore no hypocrisy on my part. I could never have left my house at age 15, dressed in a sexy dress with black heels, and an overnight bag, telling my mom I was going into town with friends and staying over night at one of their houses and would be back the next day. Plus, I still had a 9:00pm curfew at that age, lol. Does the kid having a cell phone on their person make THAT big of a difference? I understand parents trust their children, especially when the trust has really been established/earned. However, that can in no way account for the rest of the world at large at their disposal upon leaving the house.
Australia back in the 80's was a very laid back place! I more or less grew up at Port Elliot and victor Harbour. Also Glenelg beach not far from Adelaide! Doesn't mean you all of a sudden lock yourself up in your hot house!
So is Gary (AKA Shane and Brandon) actually American, or is he Australian? Because when he met her mother, he'd have had to have, or to have faked, an American accent
"Brandon" was "visiting america", which is why he couldn't attend her birthday in person. There was lots of things wrong about this, like wearing the "shirt for which security company you are for" and thinking it was okay for a 20 and 14 year old to be hooking up in the first place
TcheQ _ He was "visiting America" because he claimed to originate from Texas...so the question is still was he from Australia or USA or both in real life...?!
Red flags everywhere. Shane being the biggest one. Carly wasnt experienced enough in life to recognise it. Sonia should have been more wise to it. The second i heard it i realised Brandon and Shane were interchangeable
I'm 21 minutes into this and am disgusted by Carly's mother for allowing him to cross the line and not reporting him regardless. Is she that naive? My god!!!
Letting a 14 year old have an online romance and then inviting his “ dad “ who is a stranger to stay over to me is quite shocking. She really let her guard down. Maybe she was overly trusting .
Turning 15! Wayyyyyy to young to let a boyfriend that you’ve never met his father in your home - she was 15 not like they’ll be married 😬 sorry for your loss but very dangerous
((Sonja)) What an amazing woman ... Her strength to have Carly's Law .. to fight and speak for her Daughter to have the strength to protect other people's children .. I'm crying listening to the story of the quilt . Sending love and hugs to Carly"s family
I feel upset thinking about where Carly's head was at. Her friend turned 'Brandon' down because he was sexually inappropriate, but Carly was unable to see those red flags. I can also guarantee she was enormously uncomfortable the entire night leading up to being murdered and yet she did not feel able to simply leave, either go home or to a friends house. I think most teens who are relatively close to their parents have an understanding that if they are in a bad situation, their parent would 100% prefer their child call them for help than remain in said situation. I'm just so sad that Carly was ignoring her instincts, but I feel like she learned a bit of that from Mum, who surely must have had some hinky feelings about the whole thing.
Ok - I'm 17 minutes into this & getting a feeling there is no Brandon, alone Shane, the "father" who just happened to be passing through the area in time for Carly's 15th bday party. She hasn't met Brandon IRL yet, but the father is going to stay over at their house? Sonya's judgment is lacking. She said no and should have stuck to that. Whenever my mom or dad told us "No" the first time, "No" is what it stayed. Shane is shameless. I find it really creepy so many of these young girls consider these guys they meet online as their true boyfriends, whom they profess love for, without even having met in person...just WOW. Virtual reality has convinced them it's a real relationship even though it exists only in cyber world?
I feel heartbroken for Carly and her mum. Paediphiles are masters of manipulation, and teenagers are head strong. Carlys mum obviously was torn between protecting her daughter but teens can run off and lie about where they are going so I can understand Carlys mum felt she needed at the time to accept this 'boyfriend' in her life. The ONLY person to blame here is the EVIL monster in gaol. Let him never be released. RIP darling girl
Where the hell was Carly's father? Why the hell would any woman think any damn man should be in her house, when she had a teenage daughter? When I was young, living on my own, and dating, I did have men over a few times, but damn! He bought her a corset and underwear? Jeez! What a joke! Why the hell would she be allowed to accept such inappropriate gifts and such an inappropriate level of gift-giving! Other people thought he was creepy; why didn't Sonya see it? She was incautious. She didn't feel she could fully trust him, yet she allowed him to have access to her daughter.
It's too bad that more parents, today, don't ban the use of the Internet for their children. Teach them to read! BOOKS! They still publish them and there are libraries everywhere.
If you're talking to someone online & what they tell u doesn't make sense, then it more than likely isn't true! Pay attention to what people tell u, analyze the hell out of it!!! Use your noodle!!!
I know people will see this as victim blaming but.................WHAT THE HELL was her mother thinking? A grown man who you dont even know and you allow him to spend the night!!!. Shes lucky the guy didnt kill HER while she was sleeping. I dont understand how people are heaping praise on this woman ??? Even the girls friends found him creepy and they were 14/15 , but a grown woman invites him to stay in the spare room? WTF!!!
I agree. Too little too late. Maybe she was just terribly naive. Loved her Daughter but failed to protect her. Makes no sense to let a 14 year old have an online romance and invite his dad to stay.
I heard the mom went to the morgue because she heard on the news about a body found and she couldn't locate her daughter?? I guess everyone changes what happened... 😫

The United States, to its utter shame, is the only First World country that employs the death penalty and even its constitution forbids the use of cruel and unusual punishment , which you obviously support. So, yes, you are one sick puppy desperately in need of help. If you don't want to be reminded of comments you made months ago refrain from commenting in the future!
They didn't say she wore a sexy dress and wedge heels are perfectly normal for a teen girl.
I’m sick of hearing about her clothes ?! Not an issue Doesn’t matter Get over it!!! And no I don’t believe your safe because you have a mobile phone
Sad so sad😢 great podcast
Come on people,Listen to the little voice.run......
What the o.p. means if he was American and they spoke why couldn't they tell he had or didn't have an accent... That's what I understood 🤔
@@melida20he was the step dad, so he lived in Australia with an Australian accent.
This is Vry odd and why parents should not try to be best buds with their children .
It s hard because the relationship organically developed depending on the situ As in a single parent and child
Red flags everywhere. Shane being the biggest one. Carly wasnt experienced enough in life to recognise it. Sonia should have been more wise to it. The second i heard it i realised Brandon and Shane were interchangeable
In those times though not as obvious
I'm 21 minutes into this and am disgusted by Carly's mother for allowing him to cross the line and not reporting him regardless. Is she that naive? My god!!!
Letting a 14 year old have an online romance and then inviting his “ dad “ who is a stranger to stay over to me is quite shocking. She really let her guard down. Maybe she was overly trusting .
@@nesadcruz7840 ``Maybe?'' Where was Carly's father?
@@quickchris10 As in many of these cases, absent it seems.
Turning 15! Wayyyyyy to young to let a boyfriend that you’ve never met his father in your home - she was 15 not like they’ll be married 😬 sorry for your loss but very dangerous
Future Father in law? Makes no sense that her mum went along with it. Kids of course tend to be naive.
@@nesadcruz7840I dont blame Carly.... I blame her stupid, useless, idiotic , worthless mother.
Poor Carly and her mum xxx
Her mom?? Her mom allowed this to happen!
((Sonja))
What an amazing woman ...
Her strength to have Carly's Law .. to fight and speak for her Daughter to have the strength to protect other people's children ..
I'm crying listening to the story of the quilt .
Sending love and hugs to Carly"s family
Can anyone find the Thread app mentioned at the end?
I did a quick search of Play Store and couldn't find it
It said it's available in Australia only. Are you in Australia?
@@mlwsmp Yes, I am. I think it has been removed/was unsuccessful. This vid is bit older now.
@@ManicMangz just now listening to this now. Did you try Threat? As in you feel threatened.... I'm in America, so I can't double check this for you.
She may have been prevented leaving
They let that no good into their lives?
Im from rosebud, it's always so strange when you hear your own hometown! 🤯
@@quickchris10 good points
Pedophiles go after children who have Not hit puberty. Carly was a teen. He was taking advantage but not what I classify as a pedophile
It's too bad that more parents, today, don't ban the use of the Internet for their children. Teach them to read! BOOKS! They still publish them and there are libraries everywhere.
True You can do both !As for banning the internet unfortunately a lot of educationandsocialisation are based on its use soompractical
WTF!!!
Absolutely. What a fucking joke to think a stern warning via email was going to do the trick.
I agree. Too little too late. Maybe she was just terribly naive. Loved her Daughter but failed to protect her. Makes no sense to let a 14 year old have an online romance and invite his dad to stay.
.... and asking the girls to kiss each other at the party? Mom is a useless sap
You're right, it's victim-blaming.
@@nesadcruz7840thinking thAt a 14 year old will eventually marry some they meet at 14 is terribly naive!!
I also wouldn't want my child on a vampire freak site!!!! No way!!!
It’s just fantasy and not relevant to her fate by a paedophile
I heard the mom went to the morgue because she heard on the news about a body found and she couldn't locate her daughter?? I guess everyone changes what happened... 😫
Was obvious before that?!
Beware beware!
My heart goes out to Carly's Mother and family .

The Anemic Boyfriends - Guys Are Not Proud (1980)
i hope this awful story teaches to all teeagers to not lie and/or disobbey to their parents
Believe it or not, a teenager can actually go through a rebellious stage without being raped and murdered 🤷♀️ some people also have shitty parents that you should disobey.
How about teaching parents to be parents and not their kids' friends?
so she was scene not emo lmao
Doesn’t matter

Online dating etc ...is a lot of bs!...glad i grew up in a bygone era! I can't help thinking that kids are more ignorant giving the access to so much info world wide.
