- In this video, I update you on how I like my new Sony camcorder I purchased last summer - See initial review post and video - www.loveyourrv.com/love-your-...
I go over several of my favorite features and a few dislikes, then show off some of the accessories I've since bought for it.
Later I demo it's remote wireless operation by my smartphone using a WiFi connection. I capture video and photos of a hummingbird feeding.
At the end of the video, I test out my new K&F Concepts wireless lavalier microphone system.

Love how you incorporate actual footage during the review. Thanks...actually bought this camera.
Sony owes you big time for that awesome commercial for their camera! Saving my pennies to buy my own. Wonderful stills and video of the humming bird...
I bought this camera years ago, and remember being disappointed at how "plastic" it felt. Got an IPhone around the same time, and moved 3 times in 4 years, so I never really learned to use the Sony. Gradually, its parts got separated into different boxes. Now I have rediscovered it, and your video was the first one I watched... Wow, I had no idea I was carrying around such a capable camera. I thought it would be out of date by now. I love how you reference the user manual for all your statements in the comments -- you must be a teacher or scientist. It was helpful because the manual is one of the things I am missing. Thanks for a great introduction to the AX53 and I hope you are still getting good footage out of it.
Just bought a Sony FDR-AX53 yesterday. Should arrive next week. Your video caused me to add the Lav mic and 55mm filter to my future purchasing plans. Thanks for your review of the camera AND of the accessories.
Love your reviews of gear and different gadgets you’ve had experience with. I’m sure you have inspired many people to follow your adventures and open eyes to what is available to fellow rvers. You guys seem to have the dream life. Thank you for all you do!
Thanks. :)
Great demo of your new camera and accessories, Ray. Love the hummingbird shots! We’ve noticed you’ve had really great zoom capabilities on your videos over the past several months. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. - Stacie & Tom
Ray that new video camera and subsequently your footage is awesome! The optics and zoom are phenomenal.
Thanks for the great review of the camcorder! I just ordered one and now I know what extras to buy along wih it. Great pictures of the hummingbird!
This is probably one of the most genuine videos I have ever seen. Great upload my friend. 👌
Thanks!
Very informative video. Like your humming bird. Thanks Ray. Great camera.
Looking forward to watching the upgrades.
Thanks Ray, great video. Best camera review I've seen. Time to upgrade!
Many thanks for this information ive got the Sony FDR-AX53 i didn't know you could get those extras , loved all the extras
Wow... looking forward to some more great videos from you now Ray.
The increased quality of your videos has been very noticeable. Thanks, Ray,
Bonsoir du Quebec! Hello from Quebec ! Just discovered your channel ...i love your review of the FDR-AX53 , i have been using one since june 2017 and i love it !
I’ve hit the like button and subscribed. You gave me some ideas! Thanks ! 🏔🎥😉👍🏼
Very nice video, especially the equipment which you bought for it. Thank you for sharing 👍🏾
Yup that's also my A cam I got a few years ago. Excellent quality in both 1080 and 4k.
One of the best review of Sony AX53. Thanks.
Nice review. I always prefer long term reviews of items like this. There is just too much that can be overlooked in "unboxing" videos.
I like the addition of the lav mic. Their have been a few videos over the last year or so that I found myself thinking you would benefit from one. I like the outro it allowed for too.
Cheers. *Salutes back*
awsom camera....love the wifi bluetooth option control with smartphone.....you can do so many things with that.....great vid Ray...
Cool 😎 t-shirt. I just bought the 53. Great review my friend. Can’t wait to get outside
Great review! I loved the accessories too! Thanks
Ray those are great shots. I miss that little beagle. That camera will greatly improve your already great channel. We are a couple years out before we head out in our 5th wheel so I love your many tips and reviews. Thanks and safe travels.
Thanks, me too. :( Been quite the adjustment to get used to not having her around.
Really like that camera setup. Great review and it is definitely going to improve the channel. Wish some others would get an external mic setup when they do videos. It is irritating to try to listen or try to listen when you can’t hear them and the wind drowns them out. Nice job Ray!!
Thanks!
The viewfinder has diopter adjustment for older people like you and me...
Nice set up with the feeder.
That microphone set is awesome, not just for the money!
Great review, thanks for taking the time to make the video. I am considering this model camera for filming video content for my channel.
Very nice video, informative, interesting and goo list of accessories. Thank you sharing !
Now that is just cool as can be . Just walk away an not have to worry about the camera. Great Idea . Cheers Charles.
Great review, very helpful, thank you!
Got to love all the new technology. 👊👍😎
Great review. I’m waiting to receive the same camera so appreciate your efforts here. Thank you!
Thank you, I’m looking to buy this and your video was really useful
Great history of Zeiss lenses includes the difference in quality between the East German site and the West German site. The East German factory was producing optics far superior to the West German plant. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the two plants merged and the new company took off. I have used binoculars produced in the East German plant and they were outstanding. Sony is smart to use Zeiss.
Very informative review. I've been looking for camcorder for awhile now. Being new to all this it really is hard to decide or know what to go for.
Thanks for sharing
Thinking of getting this camera thanks for your thoughts!
Great equipment, Ray! Also great review of the camera and accessories. In my opinion, you would be miles ahead if you used the remote mics from now on. Super job, sir!
Thanks. :)
It’s 2022 and I just bought this camera today! Wasn’t happy with the GoPro hero 10 so I returned it and got this.
love those accessories. I just received my new FDR AX53 today. i will definitely get some if not all of those accessories.
I think you will love it. :)
Amazing the live Mic ! Thank you for this camera for us :-0)
I bought one of those little sony video cameras about 3 years ago when I started RVing but have never used it! It's Sony's version of a Go Pro. For a camcorder, imagine stabilization is the only way to go.
Greatly enjoyed the video with all of the tips and also showing what this cam is capable of. Im just starting out with this cam and was wondering how you got such crisp and clear images and video?
This is a beast of a handheld camera. I have taken quite a bit of test roll footage.
Hey Ray thanks for posting the great video...I have the AX33 the prior version
And I love it.
Now on my list. Thanks
Nice camera, love humming Birds
Hi Ray. Great review, I especially like the remote footage. Cheers, Dave.
Thank you. :)
That’s a great camcorder, it will serve you well! I’ve been using a Canon G40 for about 3 years now. Upgrading to an XF400 soon.
I'm really impressed with that mike.
Me too - I'm tired of those who say you need an external mic. Nonsense!
Great to see another youtuber who Works with Sony handy camcorders, I have two smaller ones, the Sony cx 405 and the Sony hdr 10je. I am thinking off upgrading to this one, I saw some depth to field shots I like and the 120 frames per seconde ability to make great post slowmotion are features I am looking for plus the Inside stabalisation. I cant figure out DSLR camera's so I will stick to Sony handy camcorders. I use external mics ,glad to see there is a hotshoe now. Thanks for this clip and greetings from the netherlands
What a nice review...Thanks
Thank you for the review.
I have the same camcorder and I agree, it's excellent. Nice review and useful to see your accessories too. Cheers.
CruisingTheCut plz how much does it cost?
Can you charge it by power bank???
Been using an AX53 for some of our newer coverage. Works great for what we need it for. Definitely recommend an external mic for outdoor use.

Thanks for the informative review. I've been looking for a 4K camcorder and this model is one of my choice.
Bought this camera and it's amazing especially if you are creative as a person.
Very cool Ray!
Bonjour de Paris ! Best review about Sony FDR-AX53. very clear, simple, example....effcient
Hey Sony ! You should make a birthday present to that gentlemen...one more camera sold
Great review thanks for sharing
Thanks for the review. 🙂
Thanks. I liked this. I have the AX43.
Great I hope you will do a review on the Argus wireless camera as I always trust your reviews.
Thank you for investing in better production for us viewers.. not that they were bad to begin with..enjoy your productions. 👍
You're welcome. :)

Great review. Thanks
I love that camera coz its so chunky and love the walking mic too
I have the ax40 model but I want the ax53 model because of the viewfinder it brings and the night vision
great review. thank you sir
Great job describing the camera. I just bought the 53 after comparing different companies. My son plays HS football and I was looking for quality imaging during recording, and during editing.
Thanks, the optical zoom and stabilization on the camera should work nicely for football footage, Cheers, Ray
Great review. Just pick up one for myself. Was going to go with the Vivax HF G50, however found this one "open box" for a very good price. Could not pass it up. Thanks again.
Neato! Love electronic toys like that. Especially love the ability you have to video and photograph the birds.
It's funny how as you were testing out that wireless lapel mic that we could hear you great, but it was almost as if you were standing beside the camera off to the side and video taping some other dude off in the distance. We'll need to get used to that!
Hey. I noticed the mic on the top of the camcorder has quite the wiggle to it. Is that by design?
Thanks, Ray. Good stuff.
haha, yeah it was kinda weird to watch back. :) Yes, that's sort of a shock absorber for it, so vibration on the camera doesn't migrate into the mic. Not super sophisticated like some with springs and stuff, but it works OK. I plan to upgrade to a better mic at some point but they can get pricey. Cheers, Ray
Great video. Thank you.
You might not believe this, but i still haven't gotten around to using my Sony FDR-AX53.
Also i may add, that i still think your video is real informative and just might get around to using it sometime soon. 🙃
Really i like the video about this camcorder , thanks for it .
Surprisingly good stills of that hummin'bird
Love this camcorder. :) Got his shot not too long ago. :) 2smoc9hdrhc9eko13nc-cdn.plushcontent.com/uploads/files/pl/65s5ptd9iu0vusu1.jpg and here is a video I got from about 12 feet away on a dull winter day through a dual pane window. Not too bad! ruclips.net/video/KUDdbEVfBL0/видео.html Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV that's pretty amazing. And cute too!
Thanks Ray, Very helpful ...
Good to hear. Cheers!
I’m picking mine up Tuesday, had to be ordered in from Sony. These tutorials are very helpful. I’ve been using a JVC Everio GZ-HD10 so this will be a good upgrade. I’m wondering how the gimbal (although it’s not really a true gimbal) will stand up to the rough and tumble of being in a truck, because I think it will be moving constantly when driving on rough roads. Any thoughts on that? Your video is very informative.
I've had mine stored in my fifth wheel that gets a lot of bouncing around going down the road and over 5000 miles no problems, I keep it in the padded Sony carry bag I bought for it. Cheers, Ray
Great video!!
Very Good Video! Thank You
Thank you for the lovely video of the humming bird. I've just bought this camera for the main purpose of record videos of sunrise regularly for my channel. Everything worked find (clear image) during the time before the sun emerge, but once the sun started to appear, things started to get blurred (I used auto setup mode). Could you give me an advice how to get record sunrise effectively, please?
Thanks very much for the video it was very informative!
Kind regards Dan
Glad it was helpful!
Nice review. Only just bought the AX53 as there was a shortage in the UK. First trial looks very promising.
Thanks, I've had mine almost two years now and has been great. Use it all the time for my RUclips videos.
It's a great camcorder, you will love it.
thanks very much for vid, good stuff
Good video for sure. Thanks.
Cool , I really like my AX53
Salamat for the great video 👌😊
Nice review I will be purchasing this camera ! Have you tried the wireless mic setup ? I’m curious if there is a delay in audio ?
Thanks, at the very end of this video I demo the wireless lav mic, couldn't see much delay. Cheers, Ray
Very nice!
Great video. If they done a camcorder the same as this but not 4K and without they eye screen thing
I got the AXP55 and I love the size
Nice, that looks like a new model. Cheers, Ray
Great video! I’m thinking about upgrading to this camera from my Sony a6000 for my scuba diving videos. Just out of curiosity, was that footage at about 3 minutes in from the Galápagos Islands by chance? I visited there back in 2018 and got some great footage on my a6000.
No, it was shot from a boat at Mitlenatch Island on the British Columbia coast www.mitlenatch.ca/mitlenatch-island/ Cheers! Ray
Nice vid! BTW how to check my FDR AX53 ACTIVE TIME (overall usage time of the camera)? Is there any shortcut or secret code to display that info?
Thanks, I haven't seen that feature in the camera
Excellent 👍
Great review. Are the batteries compatible between cameras? Also, does it need a docking station? ~ Lucy
Haven't tried them but I believe they are. The camcorder comes with a plug-in AC cord to charge or you can charge off the micro USB input so I usually just let it charge off my laptop. Also in the deal I got I got an extra travel charger thrown in - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/671751-REG/Sony_BCTRV_BC_TRV_Travel_Charger.html Cheers, Ray
Great review!! You mentioned uploading being a little difficult due to file size. I was wondering, if I go for 4K videos, since the maximum video resolution that RUclips plays your videos at is 1080p, is it worth getting a 4K camcorder? Thanks!
I thought it was very much worth getting this 4K camcorder even though for my purpose I would mainly be using it for HD videos. Reason being because it has the 4K sensor chip the extra pixels are being used to improve image stability and extend zoom when in HD mode, plus great still photos. I think it's just an OK 4K camcorder but a fantastic HD one. Perfect for the type of RUclips videos I do. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Thanks Ray!
i am wondering.. if you use the rapid harness.. the cam is hung around and bump here and there, right. Will it have bad effect to the gymbal sensor inside ?
Also what size of the filter you use in front of the lens.
Yes, I use harness when I go hiking or waling about or need to have two hands free sometimes. I let it hang on my side but usually keep one hand on it to keep it from swinging too much or hitting anything. When the camcorder is turned off the gimbal lens mechanism locks. The filter is 55mm. Cheers, Ray
I watched your video over again and picked up on your T shirt, are you a Dutchman hunter? In my younger years I did about 10 trips to the Superstition Mtns, 3 trips by horse back using Don Donally (sp) Stables out of Apache Junction to take us way back into the interior. Had lots of fun, but no gold. Our first trips were in the late 60s and let me tell you it was rough country and some rough prospectors back there. Anyway enjoyed your video and I just bought the AX53 yesterday, your video was helpful in making my decision.
Thanks, its a t-shirt I got at Lost Dutchman State Park. :)
These are fantastic cameras. 4K is really sharp but unfortunately only 25 fps so motion blur is noticeable. I always use HD high frame rate and picture quality is fantastic so no need for 4K plus it’s easier to edit. I always use the viewfinder as light doesn’t affect the screen and it’s adjustable like a still camera so I don’t need to wear glasses. I also use a Rode stereo video mic pro with a Dead Kitten fur windshield which is a big improvement over the built in one. ( much clearer sound ). I recently used the mic.on a cruise in Europe and on the front of the ship with strong winds and it did a great job. The 5 axis stability is amazing as well as the low light capabilities . I was in a small boat in Malta filming the Blue Lagoon in choppy seas and the stability did a great job. I also have the Sony action cam with the same stability and video out of the front of the car are absolutely still when it’s mounted on the windscreen. Delve into the menu and you’ll find some great fun things as well, like the ability to pluck out a single colour eg. red and the rest is black and white. Like you said it’s a bit bulky but definitely worth putting up with.Really is a great camera. Thanks for the great review.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the camera. I'm looking to upgrade to a better mic from the Sony ECM-XYST1M It has decent sound but even with it little wind sock there still is wind noise. The Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro is one I'm considering
You mean ..XAVC S?
Nice review Ray. You have really nice camcorder, but still not as expensive as the first Sony camcorder I bought in 1987 for the smoking deal of $999.00! It had the 8 mm mini tape cartridges and actually made pretty good videos.
I remember fixing those back then, quite the complex thing to take apart and work on. So mechanical. Tape mechanism would always get jammed up.
Hi Ray, how do you clean your AX 53 lens? When I try the gimbal moves the entire mechanism..... THANKS, love your channel
I usually don't need to clean it much as I leave the protective screw-on filter in place all the time. www.sony.ca/en/electronics/camera-lenses-filters/vf-55mpam
Occasionally dust specs will get in. I remove them by blowing air and using a fine bush found on camera cleaning kits. If you did have a smudge on the lens or watermarks you could with the camera powered off try very carefully manually opening the lens shuttered cover with a fingernail. It will open easily and since it's powered off the gimbal will be in the locked position. After cleaning power on and off and the shuttered lens cover will reclose. Cheers, Ray
Great review. Could you point to the play memories iphone app? I was not able to find it.
Since this video it has been changed by Sony to an app called Imaging Edge support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/iemobile/en/
