Unboxing a Sony FDR-AX53 (with too much attention to unrelated details...)

  • This is me unboxing a Sony AX53 that I received on February 15 (really took me a week before I edited this, and nearly another before I put it up...). I recorded this with a Sony PJ790 that I got a few months earlier, and as I point out in text, the noise from the gimbal is REALLY annoying. Getting an AX53 to begin with (and a brand new one, at that) was unexpected to begin with, as on eBay these go for quite a bit, and brand new from an actual electronics store is even more ridiculous (how does $1100 sound?). When an event happens to you that is rather difficult to explain WITHOUT getting personal, I guess something like this is to be expected. It's not like I really wanted it either-- I already had a good selection of camcorders (albeit as I go through in the post-unboxing section, their microphones aren't great, so this is still great to have anyway). Not to mention I don't see these in the local stores anymore, so seemingly the only stock is that which you have to buy online.
    I go off-track a lot during this video. I really wanted to make it clear how much of an improvement this would be though. Not to mention that it's brand new, so I won't need to worry about it being broken.
    About that lens cover being unexpectedly open, well, that seems to have been the only issue. Thus far, I haven't experienced anything wrong with it in the now 2 weeks I've owned the thing.
    I obviously won't do specific types of video with this. The versatility of this thing (can you believe a 5Mbps mode exists???) means that it'll be my main camera for just about anything for a while. Case in point, one of the first things I made it do was a 2 hour recording for a main channel video. And I didn't even have to worry about it, because of the big battery I got for it (which at first was supposed to be for the PJ790).
    0:00 Out-of-order note
    0:10 Background, and other camcorders
    1:19 Features (on the box, that is)
    4:46 Actually unboxing it
    6:53 The big reveal (and lens cover surprise)
    8:53 A look at the camera
    11:04 Turning it on
    15:52 End section, which is about my other camcorders
    I don't particularly care about how bad of a first shot at videos this is right now, because, well, I haven't done this in quite a while. Just don't expect me to get something up tomorrow... or next week... I feel no need to be consistent anymore. If life ends up taking me out of making videos again, that's fine.
    Hmm, that wasn't a great way to end the description. Well, I am typing this on the spot, so maybe there's something I missed. Either way, at some point I'll make individual videos for the V770 and PJ790!

    I've had mine for about 2 years now and have shot a huge amount of footage with it.
    It also records really great thunder storm footage aswell.
    Over all its a really great camera.
    You'll really enjoy using it.
    Good luck.

      Well, I know I'm enjoying it! I put in a 512GB SD card (good for 40 hours of recording in the AVCHD Progressive mode, which I usually use), and right now I've got ~2.5 hours of space left. Even though I haven't felt compelled to do anything lately (obvious by the fact that er, I haven't uploaded a video to this channel in a couple of months), I still pick up the camera often just because it's nice to use.

    I have the PAL version as I am in the UK and my lens cover was open when it shipped too. I hope you enjoy shooting with yours! The HD quality when shooting for slow motion is pretty decent, I have to say.

      It's now been two full months since I got it, and the lens cover thing was the only issue. Nothing else! (I say it was possibly some sort of shipping issue.) I absolutely enjoy shooting with it as well! That stabilization is the greatest thing ever; being able to zoom in fully and *still* point the camera at something without it shaking so much is something that I imagine nothing else is able to pull off. Before the AX53, I had a Panasonic V770 (which has a 20x optical zoom, but only normal optical stabilization), and I could never keep it steady at full zoom. And phones may have great stabilization (to add to the massive list of ways it uses software processing) at wide angles, but with the way you hold a phone, not even the software can help you at full zoom. So I hope the AX53 will last me plenty of years. :D

      @@ar2007-2c It must be the way Sony do things I guess. The stabilisation also works well when shooting from a moving car it using a mount like the Delkin Devices Fat Gecko. I have the dual suction cup version. Good luck with the AX53 and may it serve you well! Oh and one more thing, I use the Rode Videomicro with mine and it is a perfect fit!

      @ar2007-2c  2 месяца назад

      Ha, I was actually thinking of getting one of those mounts specifically for taking video in a moving car! I had the idea of pointing it out the front windshield so that I get real-time video of drives, without having to worry about the massive filesize created by a GoPro (those things do 45Mbps at 1080p60... no thank you if the drive is going to be 2 hours!). 9Mbps seems quite adequate for the task, but I often worry about a lack of quality, so maybe once I start doing those again I'll stick to 17Mbps.
      I actually did do real-time video of certain lengthy drives in December 2023 (on a trip to northern California), and once I get back home (I'm on another trip, this one for the solar eclipse; I get home on the 20th), I'm thinking of editing those and putting those up. Of course, those were shot on the PJ790, which has noticeably (to me, that is) lower spatial quality, but it was what I had. And I'd mounted it to my tripod, so there's quite the offset from it being from the POV of the passenger seat. But nonetheless, I think it's good enough.
      Never heard of the VideoMicro. (Then again, I don't pay attention to Rode, and external microphones in general). Seems enticing (I just want a microphone, not a "vloggers" microphone). May actually buy.

      @@ar2007-2c Well worth it, I have used mine alot. I also recommend getting a copy of the Manfrotto P200 tripod plate and clamp as it will make mounting the camera a breeze!

    Hey man. Good video. Like you I'm currently using a Sony HDR-PJ790 and considering upgrading to the AX53. I wanted to ask... is it a big leap/upgrade for you? I'm mostly using it to record my son's Soccer matches at 1080p/60.
    If I was to get the AX53 I'd look at using 4K/60 or maybe do 1080p/120.
    Are you using 4K since getting the AX53? If using 1080p, do you notice a bump up in quality from the PJ790?
    Cheers.

    • @ar2007-2c
      @ar2007-2c  3 месяца назад

      In a few ways, yes, it's an upgrade! For starters, that annoying gimbal noise is gone. Also, even in 1080p, there is a MASSIVE quality increase in the video. It's so much that I feel like not using the PJ790 at all anymore. Well, the lack of a GPS kind of sucks, but it's something I can get over. The quality's enough that I'd actually use the XAVC mode without worrying about it wasting the bitrate. (What I mean by that is, for example, the CX405 has the XAVC mode, despite having so small of a sensor that it's completely unnecessary.) Yeah, XAVC drops down the audio from 5.1 to stereo, but hey, it's double the bitrate (compared to AVCHD Progressive, which averages 25Mbps), which at that point is overkill for videos. (Funny that 50Mbps is more than enough and most popular RUclipsrs think they need ten times that for recording their videos, which inevitably will get recompressed by RUclips to 6Mbps.)
      Unfortunately, the AX53 does not do 4K60. I wish it did. If it was able to, I would have focused on getting it first and foremost above any cheaper options (which led me to getting a PJ790). However, the 1080p120 mode is cool! And with the gimbal, it looks pretty good slowed down because it's not shaky. Now, obviously, that comes at the cost of having a lot higher bitrate (either 60 or 100Mbps), but given that the 1080p60 options roughly map out to half of that, I wouldn't complain about it. Because the 4K is limited to 30FPS, I don't use it; however, if you don't care about framerate, go ahead and use it! There definitely is a quality improvement in 4K! (Which explains why it looks SO good even in 1080p.)

    Hi, I have the Handycam 4K FDR-AX53 camcorder.
    and I have a question, since the PlayMemories Online service ended on February 29, 2024 and it is the one I previously used to transfer my videos recorded with my Sony camera. How am I supposed to download and edit my videos on my computer now? I used to do it with my old Mac computer. Someone please tell me how to do it now, what application is used and if I can do it on my new computer macOS Sonoma 14.5. Please explain me step by step because I'm not really savvy with technology.
    The information is appreciated in advance. Thanks.

      I don't own a Mac, so I can't confidently say this is how you do it, but Sony's support website has two methods to copy video. One of them I think will work, and it's the same one I do (and I use a PC): connecting camcorder to the PC via a USB cable. (Specifically a micro-USB to USB cable.) Sure, it's not easy to navigate the folders, but once you get familiar with where all the files are, you should be alright. Also note that via this method, videos recorded in AVCHD will also be broken into 2GB files (all camcorders that record in AVCHD do this, but certain software joins the files together). But again, I'm not confident about how well this works (especially on newer Macs; Sony hasn't paid attention to this since before Apple dropped the 10.x version numbering, so perhaps enough updates have occurred since to break this...).
      The other method is to use PlayMemories Home, which I believe is different from PlayMemories Online. The guide says it works for Macs running on versions up to 10.13, so I do think you need an older Mac for this method. Again, I've never used it, so whether that's really the case I don't know.

    Question: why not a 43?

    • @ar2007-2c
      @ar2007-2c  4 месяца назад +1

      I wanted the viewfinder. The AX43 doesn't have that. And although it may not be a great viewfinder, at the very least I can see what I'm recording outside. I'm not saying the AX43 isn't a viable option, if you really need to save and have no need for the viewfinder, go right ahead!
      I also felt a little more inclined to get the AX53 as I'd think it's a little better built. Sony seems to just have been dropping the quality control on their newer products over the last few years.
