    Ohmygoodness! I am 62 years old… grew up where we all learned to knit, crochet, sew, embroider, needlepoint, mend etc… and Tat. It was the one thing I could NEVER master. My grandmother and Aunt’s hands just flew and whenever I tried, that shuttle was on the floor and I had a tangled mess! Your lesson and explanation is amazing! I’m off to dig out a tatting shuttle and finally, after ALL these years, master that little shuttle of doom 😂.

    Needed this video 53 years ago!! LOL! Actually, I did find a woman who was able to show me the magic of getting that stitch to flip. At 20 I was fairly accomplished in sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, so decided I could teach myself to tat from one of those 'teach yourself to ....' books. It was one of the most frustrating experiences I'd had. I was sitting in the living room with my thread, the instruction booklet and tons of knots in my lap while my sister was getting ready to go out with a friend. She wasn't ready, so her friend sat with me on the couch waiting for her. He recognized what I was trying to do and said his grandmother had tried to teach his sisters, but none were interested. When I explained that I wasn't really tatting - evidence in the piles of knots on my lap, he said his grandmother would be delighted to teach me.
    Within 24 hours, I was visiting his grandmother and she taught me the magic. You are right, one reason tatting is not as common as some other hand arts is that pesky flip of the knot!

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically Год назад

      Yes! Once you get that step the rest is fun and beautiful, but unfortunately tatting has a really steep learning curve. I agree that it is really difficult to "get it" from a book, you need another pair of hands to show it. What a great story, thank you for sharing it with me. 😊

    I watched this video at 3am and the bit about the flipping the knot had not registered before. I could only get knots that never moved. Now I understand why. I came down this morning and did two knots correctly as they move. Thank you for doing this video in thick wool and explaining slowly. It has meant that I can do tatting in time with practise. Thank you.

    Thank you so much for this video. I was constantly saying, "Effing tatting knots", not flipping tatting knots...lol. It took me about 4 hours to finally get a ring with 3 picots as every 2nd or 3rd knot wouldn't slide and I had to unpick it and do it again. I'm an avid crocheter and knitter but wanted to learn about shuttle tatting. I saw a shuttle in the craft store and was curious what it was all about so I bought one.
    This video is the best explanation of how to actually do the knots properly and by using the larger tatting shuttle with large yarn shows it clearly.
    I really can't express how grateful I am for such a clear explanation on not only how to do it properly but also showing clearly what the knot should look like once it has flipped onto the shuttle side of the thread. Now I'm hooked on this craft and keen to learn as much as possible to see what I can create.

    Wow, thanks!! Your explanation about your hand position (second finger instead of index finger pinching the knots) was so helpful for me in finally getting control of the flip. Maybe because I'm a Continental knitter, and my left index finger already does a lot of work controlling yarn tension? At any rate, I'm now far more hopeful of being able to learn this beautiful craft.

    Thank you! I grew up watching my aunt tat and could never figure it out. Now, 45 years later I finally see what the “flip” is going on! It’s all about getting the hand thread to go around the shuttle thread. The natural pattern is for the shuttle thread to go around the hand thread. I thought the flip was to tighten the knot from the index finger side of the hand thread to the thumb side. Thank you for taking the time to verbally and visually explain the what the flip is.

    I am new to this I was at hobby lobby and got a book for needle tatting and then went on to RUclips and found a few other videos on shuttle tatting and I was like oh how cool and pretty that is. So I went back and got what I needed for shuttle tatting and have watched like oh maybe 50 or so videos from different people. I want to learn this so badly I am trying so hard but for some reason this is the hard part for me. I love how you have used the bigger thread here. It shows us closer up. I just changed out my thread to a thicker on maybe a size 5 I think. Going to try one more time. If I can’t get it this time I am to the point of giving up for a bit and put it away.for a while and try again later. Needle tatting seems to be easier for me. But I wanted to learn this. You explain things so well. And you examples are explained so well. Thank you so much for help.

    I’m trying to learn how to tat and have watched many videos…thank you for your clear and simple instructions! I do have a question though…does it matter which way you hold the shuttle and which direction the thread unwinds off of it? I see yours and it’s the top left as you pass the shuttle back and forth. I’ve also seen it in the bottom left. And probably the other side too!

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically 2 года назад +1

      I like having the thread come out the front of the shuttle because I feel like it lets me steer it better and keeps the working space larger than if it comes off the back. But it is entirely personal preference.

    • @BryceHistorically

      Yes, I think you would reverse my hands from the video and hold the shuttle with your left, especially if you are already familiar with that idea from your crocheting. 😊 Good luck! Remember that the hardest part is right there in the beginning when you learn how to flip the knot. I have another video addressing just that step, in case you need it. Since you are already familiar with crocheting, etc., you should be able to govern your string tensions which is a big plus.

      Keep your left hand (if you are right handed) loose. It’s probably flipping back because your hand thread is too tight. Training your hands to have the right tensions takes a lot of practice, but eventually it will be in your muscle memory and you won’t even have to think about it. 😊

      No, no, it's definitely not you. It's a super confusing step right there in the beginning. I'm so glad you got it! 😊

    I can get the knot to flip on the first half when I bring my hand towards me and go under the thread around my finger. When I do the second part and I move my hand away from me and bring the shuttle on top of the hand thread I cannot get the knot to flip.

    My knots are flipping but can't close the ring, not sure what I am doing still. Any ideas?

    Can you please tell me where you got the giant tatting shuttle? ❤️

      It's made by "Tatsy." I think I got this one in a bag of tatting things from a local thrift shop. If you're looking for one, I don't know if they are being sold new anywhere, so keeping an eye out maybe on Etsy or EBay as well as antique stores or thrift shops is probably your best bet. 😊

    I can get my knot to flip but im really struggling with keeping it flipped as i pull it tight, ive tried arching around or pulling it in different directions to keep it flipped but i just cant get it to work 90% of the time 😭

      Tension. Once you get the knot flipped, don't let your threads get tight. It takes a lot of practice to get the right tensions into your muscle memory, but keep at it. Keep your threads, especially your hand thread, relaxed.

    What brand is the large/giant tatting shuttle you are using in this video?

      The brand is “Tatsy.” It’s their 4” shuttle, I think. It’s huge, haha! I got it in a bag of random tatting things from a local thrift store, but I think you can still find them new. 😊
